Artemis had voyages with the crew of The Fury of the Depths for a week now. Their escapades has ranged from sailing the open seas, to dealing with pirates that had seemed to become more active recently, to finally acting as an escort and passenger ship for merchants. The thrill of the open waters had always called on Artemis, and she was not one to deny the fact that the open seas felt like home to her. It was in her blood, as a Somerset, and as someone who wielded the water element. Her grimoire has all but sung when it was used in the open seas, and she herself felt an uplifting spirit whenever she had been able to use her spells in the open waters. It was an interesting feeling, something that she had almost forgotten because of the lack of time to actually do anything besides missions for the Magic Knights. However, after today, she knew that she would need to take time out of her week to go back to Hapshass and check up on her family. She would also like to check out the new fleet that was being built, she knew they were going to be replacing some of the old fishing ships very soon. Artemis will need to do her duties, among others things.[break][break]
“So, this is it then?”[break][break]
Captain Verona de la Rouge, captain of The Fury of the Depths, would come up behind Artemis. The woman still had her commanding stance on, a enlightened smirk in her face, and a posture that screamed danger to those who might not know her well enough. For the past few days, Artemis found herself a friend with the female captain, and she knew that such friendships were meant to last. The woman had stubbornly declined working for the Somerset family. Having The Fury of the Depths within the payroll of the Somerset family would bolster the strength of the family as a whole, and only solidify their dominance in the sea. But, as any captain would do, the woman would wave away any sort of partnership. She was, after all, independent in her own right. Verona de la Rouge did not need any noble ascent, or backing, since her ships was renowned already. And Artemis cannot blame the woman for wanting a sense of freedom, of independence. [break][break]
“Yes, I suppose it is time.” Artemis would nod. There was no sugar coating it, after all. Her time with the ship was coming to a close, since her week off from the Green Mantis was coming to a close as well. She had hoped that she could have a few days to go back to her familial estate, to check up on her mother and what not. But, it seems that she had enjoyed her time sailing, and had lost track of time. “I had only planned on staying for three days, possibly winning the contest earlier, and then picking apart your ship’s design to send back to my ship makers.” She would shrug. It was out in the open that Artemis was trying to pick apart the ship for her own purposes. The sleek build was something of a new design, and while the Somersets had ships that sailed fast, it was never as fast as the recorded speed of The Fury of the Depths. “But, it seems that you had to drag me into an adventure, and then another after that. It has been awhile since I have just sailed the open seas, free thinking, and not having to worry about responsibilities to the Magic Knights, and to my family. For that, I thank you.” She shook her head, “however, reality calls once more. The Green Mantis will be calling for me soon, and there are some things that I will need to be doing for the foreseeable future.” Artemis knew that she needed to prepare for her Vice Captain Exam. The Captain, Barron “Hannibal” Castle, had already scheduled for her to spar with him, and she was slightly anxious, but wholly excited. “So, I believe this will be it for me and The Fury of the Depths.” [break][break]
There was a pregnant pause. Artemis was caressing the ship’s railing, taking in the high quality of wood used for the ship itself. She was not surprised that Captain Verona de la Rouge spared little money for the construction and maintenance of the ship itself. The Fury of the Depths must maintain its status as one of the best ships that has sailed the Clover Kingdom’s shores. It was a pride of the Captain, and it’s crew. [break][break]
“Well, I just wanted to say that it has been great working with you for the past week. I think we owe you more than just letting you study my ship. Just the pirate mission alone was already a god send. You do not understand just how much we could have lost if you had not been there. The pirates were brigands, and while my crew are strong in their own right, they would have had suffered casualties if they had engaged the pirates themselves. You coming in and defeating them all on your own did not only make the mission easier to begin with, but it also saved lives and limbs.”[break][break]
Artemis nodded. Her actions had definitely saved lives, and made the mission so much easier. Though Verona de la Rouge seemed to think that she did it for the crew. She supposed that a small amount of her motivations were about the crew of The Fury of the Depths. But for the most part, she was satisfying her love for adrenaline. Artemis’ blood had been boiling then, and she knew that beating up the pirates would be satisfying. And it was, for the most part. She had though that they would be stronger, or faster, or even smarter. They had been a plagued to the seas surrounding the Clover Kingdom, and a thorn to the people whose livelihoods concerned the open sea. [break][break]
“I suppose so. My presence there had been mere luck, since I had been deciding on leaving at that point.” She would shrug, “My spell repertoire made it almost impossible for the pirates to do anything against me. They were too slow, too weak, and too afraid.” The pirates were just that, pirates. They had been thugs, nothing more. Of course, she had been expecting more, but was rewarded with disappointment. Artemis found herself wondering if it was the fact that her power level had increased dramatically in recent weeks. Lydia had told her about it, the Archmage level or something of the sort. A power level that rivalled some of the Captains of the Magic Knights Squad. “But I digress. I am sure that your crew would have been just fine. Those thugs seemed to have been more of a hit and run type, and not the brute force type of thievery and criminality.” Artemis had dealt with both types of criminals. One of them was harder to deal with, and it was usually the brute force type. They were more than likely to fight back until they died, with no thought of surrender at all. They were also the big thugs, those who trained combat magic. “Your crew, they are trained well enough. While injuries would have been sustained, for the most part, you all would have survived without a pinch.” Artemis gave the captain a nod, a sign of encouragement and of solidarity. She knew the trials and tribulations of being a Captain, and being concerned for one’s crew, after all. It was a burden all leaders bore, the life of the people working for you on your hands. [break][break]
“Well, I must get off.” Artemis finally started, now staring at the horizon. Raque was a beautiful city, and it’s towers were a sight to behold. What had accentuated the city’s landscape was the beautiful harbor, and the clear blue water that was heavily patrolled and kept clean by the city. The view that is mostly ignored is the field of grass that surrounded the city limits, welcoming any visitor that entered through the front gate. “I feel that I have overstayed my stay at this point.” Artemis would shrug, “and I know that my Captain will have my head if I am late for my Vice Captain Exam.” [break][break]
“Vice Captain? You are that high in your Magic Knight Squad, and you did not even tell us. We definitely could have treated you much better than giving you that broom closet of a room.” [break][break]
Artemis waved the woman’s comments off, “I don’t like being treated special because of it. I certainly do not like fan fare about it. I do my job because I want to, and my promotions only help me make the Clover Kingdom a better place for all its citizens.” A part of it was also giving the Green Mantis a chance to rise up from the ashes of the past as well. “So, no, treating me as a guest was good enough. I would have been fine being treated as one of the crew as well.” [break][break]
“Well, I suppose this is goodbye then-“[break][break]
Captain Verona de la Rouge was stopped by one of her crew members, who seemed to be urgently looking towards his captain and Artemis. The Green Mantis mage would glance at the two, as they began their heated whispers. She could not hear them properly, nor did she want to eavesdrop on their conversation. After all, it was most likely something private, and definitely something very urgent. Artemis herself knew that sometimes there are things that Captains did that needed to be kept secret. Jobs that were sanctioned by the city that were less than legal, though a necessity. Even the Green Mantis has had a few missions that were not the most legal, but they had been very vital to the long term prosperity of the Clover Kingdom as a whole. Such is a life for those who serve a higher purpose, a higher power.[break][break]
“Ah, Lady Somerset, it seems that we might need some help once more. A last request of sorts, if you do not mind hearing me out?”[break][break]
Artemis would tilt her head, curiosity piqued. It must be something that had to do with pirates. They seemed to have been a plague, and a second wave, copy cats if you will, was always a possibility. It happened sometimes, those trying to ride out the first successful wave of piracy in a long time. It happened with rogue activities as well. Citizens who think that by riding out the fame of a rogue could garner them some infamy as well. Artemis knew that the second wave was usually less strong, and even less smart. So the crew of The Fury of the Depths should not have any problems what so ever. It was this fact that made this an even more confusing request. [break][break]
“Of course, I will hear you out.” She would finally responded. “Whatever it is, I am sure your crew members would be able to handle it. If they are copycat pirates, then they should be weak enough. A second generation, at least in crime, is never really as good as the first.”[break][break]
“Well, you see, this one is not the case of a second generation of pirates. From what the reports have been suggesting, mana beasts seem to have been spotted just outside of the usual fishing spot of many of Raque’s fishermen and the trading routes. While this is not an uncommon occurrence, since fishing grounds are often the very place where mana beasts of the sea sometimes feed as well, these ones have actually been disturbing the ships that try and catch their fill of fish. The mana beasts we are used to seeing are those who are deep beneath the schools of fish, grabbing their fill from the bottom of the school, and then leaving for better and more open seas. These ones are a menace.”[break][break]
Artemis nodded along, though she was unsure what kind of mana beast in the sea would be aggressive enough to actually attack fishing boats. As the woman had mentioned, most of the mana beasts found in the big blue sea were by and far large and very much docile. Some of them are vicious, but they were not found near fishing areas so close to cities and towns. The mana beasts knew just how dangerous it would be to show themselves, and be a target for the Magic Knights. For some reason, the mana beasts of the sea were just a little smarter than those found on land, and it had always intrigued Artemis. [break][break]
“Let’s go then.” She would finally respond. “One final run before I leave this ship behind, hm?” Artemis could not help but be curious about the mana beasts, and was very interested to see what kind they were.[break][break]
The Fury of the Depths unfurled their sails, and were immediately poised to set sail. Captain Verona de la Rouge had given the Green Mantis member a grin, before quickly hoisting herself up one of the rope ladders towards the helm of the ship, while Artemis followed her. A flurry of activity, and a cast off later, they were on their way to the fishing grounds. The wind had been on their side, which only carried the boat much faster, with its sleek design already cutting through the waves, and riding the ones that carried them forward.[break][break]
It did not take long for them to reach the fishin grounds, and Artemis could see that mana beasts with tentacles were seemingly coming in and out of the small waves. They were not really trying to hide themselves, but rather, were menacingly taunting their ship as it approached the area. [break][break]
“Keep safe, and do not, I repeat, do not try to engage them near the sides of the boat. I fear that they will use their tentacles to drag any in their grasp down below the deep ocean with them.” Artemis would call out to the men of the ship, before her grimoire started to shimmer with a sea-blue glow. Channeling her mana, she immediately made two of her Scylla swords appear in her hands, while she created one more spell to combat the creatures underwater.[break][break]
“Scylla! Kraken!”[break][break]
The swords were immediately put to use, slashing at two of the creatures that had tried to board the ship. There seemed to be six of them in total, with the first two already falling to Artemis’ blade. Her Kraken golem, bursting through the waves, caught two in its grasped, and slammed them back down onto the water, causing a shower of sea-water to rain down on the ship.[break][break]
“Two more.”[break][break]
The last two had tried to flee, but Artemis quickly found them from the outline of their shadows. Without fail, Artemis threw her two Scylla sword, and used her mana to guide them in swift motion, impaling the last two with precision.[break][break]
“I suppose that was it, hm?” Artemis would nod at the Captain, before releasing her spells. “How weird, to see mana beasts out in the open sea engaging ships. This warrants further study…” She would trail off. One thing was for sure, Artemis knew that something big was happening, though what, she did not know.

While she can use the swords in a physical fight, she oftentimes manipulates the swords with her mana, using it to fight enemies from afar. If she chooses to, Artemis can make a sword explode in a shower of pin-sized needles, causing an AOE effect. At first hit, opponents are blinded by the water that hits their eyes. The blind effect only happens once per opponent. Scylla is coated with an illusion, making them very hard to see, hear, and smell, and sense with mana.
