Qiao was ready to hit the road. He had on his mantle this time. While he was still on vacation and the mission could be considered more of a personal thing. He decided it was still necessary to give his squad the credit. As a member of the Peacocks Qiao had to use all the things in his means to give his squad the recognition that was required. This was just the type of mission that would have been handed to them as well. [break][break] Walking up to Da Inn Qiao could see a myriad of faces. Some of the people were being thrown out of the group and some like himself were just arriving. Expeditions usually attracted a bunch of people. It was not often that people outside of the magic knight squads would be allowed to go on an expedition. So the tryouts for this one were larger than what was standard. Renowned explorers, scientists, Knights, and mercenaries were present to take part in the adventure. [break][break] Qiao sensed a spell coming towards him. From the direction it came from and the way it affected others before reaching him. Qiao was not worried about it at all. If the spell was dangerous the people in front of him would be injured first. It would give Qiao ample time to deal with the caster without breaking a sweat. A voice rang inside his mind as a sensory spell was cast on the crowd. “Excuse me lovely people of Clover. Please keep in mind that slots for the expedition are limited. In order to get a pass for attending. You will be given a chance to display your power and a short interview. When you sign up you will be given a yellow crystal that has a number. The crystal will change colors when the final choices are made. Folks that have a Green crystal will be given the info to join. Folks with a red crystal will not be allowed to come. The Crystal will self-destruct after a certain amount of time when it becomes red. Thank you for listening to the announcement.” The voice stopped as Qiao sensed the spell ending. [break][break] It was a simple enough process to go through. Qiao signed up and was given the number 667. The first test that was given to the room was a simple test of hitting a dummy with a spell. The dummy had a crystal inside that measured magic power. A simple enough goal. Qiao waited in line for his turn to come.
Hans was making his way to the sight of the tryouts. He had his sheathed sword strapped safely to the side of his waist and his grimoire set on the other side. The merc was ready, but he wasn't exactly thrilled either despite the usual look of indifference on his face. He was perfectly fine with the portion of the test involving skill assessing...but what he wasn't looking forward to the talking portion. Hans didn't exactly have that social charm that many of these other participants might have. He's a man of few words, and they are usually in response to others, or something job related. The poor guy never grew up with a proper social life due to many things. Still, he decided to push on through, hoping that his abilities will be enough to be seen as beneficial.
Getting closer to the Inn, Hans started to notice more and more people heading in that direction. They were some of the other candidates, some he actually recognized back at the archives. Now with the building in full view, the merc raised an eyebrow as he witnessed some people getting comically kicked out. The sight of this caused some of the incoming participants to whisper among themselves, laugh, while the ones who let their nerves get the best of them turned around and walked off.
While continuing to walk, the dark mage's steps grew slower as he felt a magical presence. Before he could ponder more on what it was, the man gasped lightly and instinctively grabbed the hilt of his sheathed sword the moment he heard a voice coming from his head. This was his first time dealing with a communication spell like this, so it caught him off guard. Fortunately it didn't turn out to be anything hostile and was just about the tryouts, causing a sigh of relief to escape the man's lips. The explanation was pretty straightforward...Though, the part about the crystals exploding seemed a bit much.
After that was finish, Hans continued on and got in line behind an individual with...familiar looking pink hair.
Hans did not think nothing of it at first until he started sensing that powerful mana again. It caused the merc to stare at the back of this guy's head with a look of realization. It was that guy he sat by back at the archives, "Q" he believes? It wasn't much of a surprise since he wasn't the only familiar face he saw, but what he noticed was the cloak around Q. So he was a Magic Knight then, fitting with how powerful he felt. There was a slight sense of intimidation on Hans' part just by feeling this mana but he managed to keep a strong front as usual. After Q went in, Hans was up next to sign up. 668 was the number given to the merc and with an acknowledging nod, the man went in to wait as well.

“Glad you could make it. Are you at least somewhat excited about” [break][break] Qiao was always one to be polite. It happened more when there was a chance of working with someone in the future. Qiao never wanted to leave his back to someone he did not know. As he did not see any other current members of the Coral Peacock squad he figured it would be better to get to know the man he met in the library. On the off chance that they both passed Qiao would be travelling with one person he knew. [break][break] “Number 667!” [break][break] Qiao’s number was called to hit the test dummy. Qiao was pretty sure with his current magic standard he could blast the testing dummy into pieces if he wanted to. He just felt like showing some restraint because he believed it would be detrimental to all the other people trying to test if he did. Rat bites to escape the net of entrapment. Qiao thought the spell out and pointed. His grimoire slightly glowed which was the only indicator he even cast a spell to the majority of the people in the room. The testing dummy made a sound upon impact, slightly sending it back. Even with Qiao restraining his power the damage to the dummy could be seen. The magic crystal released the data as an A rank was shown above the dummy. [break][break] “This is one of the higher ranks we have seen displayed so far. It also looked like you were barely trying. This is more than a passing grade. Minimum passing grade is C so feel free to head upstairs for the interview portion.” Qiao nodded to show that he understood the orders. [break][break] He turned around to look at Hans. “I guess I will see you upstairs.” He flashed a smile before heading up. He had little doubt that someone as strong as Hans would not be able to make it to the interview portion. Comparing the two of them together Hans was absurdly weak. Compared to Hans to all the other people present he was actually a lot better than them. If the standard of the magic crystal was relative to the amount of constants and their power levels. Qiao believed Hans could make C rank or higher. Maybe even hit his own A rank if he went all out. It was a good thing Qiao held back or the test results would skew a lot.
Page 3: Rat Bite[break] Name of Spell: Rat bites to escape the net of entrapment[break] Elemental Type: Wind[break] Spell Rank &Type: Intermediate,Attack, Sensory/Illusion[break] Spell Range and Speed: 60m, 30m/s[break] Mana Cost: 20 cast, 10 upkeep[break] Stats: +4 Power[break] Applicable Perks: Skilled Sniper, Quick Shot, Apex Predator , Oddity: Pink, Master Illusionist, Shattered Psyche[break] Description: A giant pink floating rat head is created by his magic. The rat head tries to bite at a target with the giant front teeth. As if trying to bite it into a pulp, if bitten it will cause crushing damage. The spell is target specific and like some of his other spells can disappear at his will (he coats it with an illusion to hide the mana signature and sight of it). This is negated if the sensory stat or ki is used to spot it. He can change targets one per round. For every 30 in control he can create an additional rat like this besides the initial rat.
Hans looked a bit surprised as the pink haired magic knight acknowledged him. He appeared kind of chatty back at the library, but honestly wasn't expecting him to continue on with it here. Even though he isn't much of a talker himself, Hans would've still found it rude if he didn't reply back to Q. Plus it would help move things along a lot faster "Only thing I'm looking forward to is the payment." Hans claimed, averting his dark eyes. Even though there is some truth to his words, the merc was curious about what potentially lied in these ruins, but of course none of that would matter if he doesn't pass these tryouts...which the guy was honestly not looking forward to.
After hearing the number of the man in front of him being called, Hans turned his attention back to Q as he made his way to the testing dummy. Not just Hans' but most of the other contestants had their eyes on Q now with some still talking among themselves, or doing other things. But that quickly changed as the guy unleashed a spell at the dummy. It appeared to be a...pink wind spell in the shape of a rat's head? Both Hans and the others were all speechless at Q's impressive display of magic which scored him an A rank! Hans had a feeling that this person was powerful, and it looks like his suspicions were correct.
But apparently, this wasn't his full strength...
Hearing this comment caused some of the other's mouths to drop while others talked with each other, this time about the pink haired mage. Some commented on how he looks familiar, while others seemed to already know who he is, or heard of him at least. Hans on the other was still not sure what to say. It made sense that there would be some strong folks here. His eyes then met with the wind mage's again claiming that he'll meet the merc upstairs confidently. The dark mage didn't say anything but just watched as the magic knight went upstairs, disappearing from view.
"Number 668!" Being so caught up with the other guy and still looking at where he left, Hans didn't notice his number being called at first. "....Number 668?" With that, Hans finally snapped back to reality and looked at the other person before turning his attention towards the others who looked at him confusingly. "Right..." Finally picking up how long he was taking, the merc walked up to a new dummy with his katana drawn. Hans' four leaf grimoire floated to the guy's side, catching the eyes of some people who were close enough to see it which led to even more gossip and speechless looks. A dark aura surrounded the open book as that same aura formed around the blade of the sword, changing it from silver to black, some dark smoke floating from the blade. Gripping the hilt with both hands, Hans lifted the sword up and quickly slashed downwards at the dummy which sent it flying back against a wall, leaving a nice vertical cut on the center of it. The ranking given from this attack was a B, a letter lower than Q's but still enough to pass...and surprise the others.
"W-well then. You passed as well! Proceed to the interview portion upstairs then." Hans nodded after he heard this and sheathed his sword. As he walked to the stairs, the man stopped. To him, this was going to be the hardest part of this whole thing. "Huh..Guess we're doing this." the man muttered to himself. With an exhale out his nose, Hans prepared himself and started to make his way upstairs, with no turning back now.
Name of Spell: Darkness Magic: Chaos Slash Elemental Type: Dark Rank & Spell Type: Junior - Attack Creation Range & Speed: Melee - 10 m/s Mana Cost: 10 (Initial) - 5 (Sustain) Stats Effected: +4 Power (Battle Knight) Applicable Perks: Battle Knight, Quick Shot Description: As the user's grimoire flips to the page of the spell, the blade of the user's sword (or their arm if no weapon is used) with be wrapped in a pitch black aura. The user will then perform a vertical or horizontal slash, striking their target with darkness, dealing some minor cuts and bruises, knocking them back two meters while tearing through flimsy objects/structures or leaving minor cracks on stronger ones. Knock back increases by five meters for every ten power the user gains.
Qiao did not have to wait long upstairs before Hans showed up. He gave the mercenary a friendly smile. “The money would be only a gateway. You will probably get all kinds of offers from going on an expedition. If you were interested you could even use it as a chance to get in with some of the magic knight squads. If you really wanted and if you were into the kind of thing. Not every is cool with the duties of a magic knight, even I find it restricting at times.” [break][break] His number was called and he nodded to the mercenary. Qiao was not trying to sell the man on becoming a magic knight. He was merely stating a fact and telling Hans what he thought. As Qiao sat in the chair he sensed various mana fluctuations as spells were cast. If he wanted to stop them he could have. While he sat he figured it was just some simple spells to measure breathing and heart rate. A simple way to weed out most liars, or at least the terrible ones. [break][break] “Why are you coming on this expedition?” Vones asked him a simple question in a semi board voice. [break][break] “I have an interest in the ruins. The ancient arrays they used there are fascinating to say the least. Not to mention the traps and other stuff that you can find in the ruins. I am confident in my ability to be useful. As one scientist to another why would I not want to come on this expedition?” [break][break] The lady raised her eyebrow in response to his counter question. An interesting glint passed through her eyes as she looked at Qiao. His answer was straight forward and contained no worry. Qiao believed she could sense his sincerity in joining the expedition. Not to mention she may have noticed his mantle as well. She may have been retired but any person that was ever in a squad would instinctively trust members of their squad at times. Unless the person left on bad terms and hated everyone involved with the squad. [break][break] She smiled at him before speaking back. “Alright, thank you for your consideration. We will see you at a later date.” Qiao did not even need to check his crystal as he figured he would make it in. [break][break] Qiao stood up to leave. “You should give the applicant behind me a chance as well. I have a good feeling about him.” Qiao was unsure if his words would hold any weight but he left all the same. He had a feeling he would see them all later. [break][break] [Exit]

“When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”
Finally making it to the top of the stairs, Hans was greeted by a smile from the Coral Peacock mage which the dark mage reacted by shyly averting his eyes as he wasn't expecting this. Still, the merc listened to what Q had to say. It was obvious that something as big as this could lead to other opportunities with the potential of earning the respect of higher ups. As soon as the wind user spoke of magic knights, Hans once again had his eyes on the man. "Thanks...but not interested." he'd simply say. He was aware that Q was not trying to get him to join his squad, but his reply was more about not wanting to join the Magic Knights in general.
The reasoning behind this wasn't because Hans didn't like the rules or thought it wasn't his style...but because he didn't feel worthy of bearing any of the mantles. A combination of being born in the Diamond Kingdom and his father beating into his son that he was nothing but a "weapon" for said Kingdom has discouraged the merc on many things in his life, leading him to become a mercenary and distant with most others.
With that, Q's number was called and the magic knight walked off to take the interview with Vones herself, Hans crossing his arms as he watched him.
Hans placed his back against a nearby wall and looked away, noticing some other participants making their way upstairs. Hans heard the woman ask Q a simple question and the guy answered with such confidence and interest in his tone, enough to make the merc smirk as he closed his eyes. This Q person was interesting that was for sure. On top of the strength he has, the wind mage seemed like a positive person, a perfect contrast to Hans. It reminded him of that light mage elf he met a long time ago...except not as chatty. He also reminded him of another elf, a blue haired woman. The moment Hans thought of her however caused the man to blush faintly, but immediately he closed his eyes and exhaled out his nose, trying not to think too much about her.
With Q done with his interview, Hans started to prepare himself, but then he stopped and glanced over in the direction of the other two, overhearing the pink haired guy's words which caused his face to loosen up some, a light smile forming on his face.
As his number was called, Hans made his way to the chair and stared down Vones who returned the favor, part of her questioning if this was really the guy Q was referring to.
“Why are you coming on this expedition?” the same question now asked to the dark mage. Underneath Hans' stoic facade was nervousness which would've been hard to tell if it weren't for his heat beat being picked up on by the spells Vones was using yet she did not react to it and instead waited patiently for Hans to speak. Not being much of a talker, Hans wanted to tell the woman what he told Q, but the guy knew that was not enough. "To help." Hans plainly said, prompting the woman to raise an eyebrow. She was half tempted to throw the guy out on the spot, but then the dark mage continued. "I believe that whatever we find in these ruins will prove to be beneficial for the kingdom. Also the ancient architecture is very...nice." Hans said, adding the last part if a bit of uncertainty. Once again, Vones was quiet, her hands clasped together as she silently pondered, and after a few moments, she'd speak.
"...Very well." she claimed before gesturing at the exit, Hans looking at her with a hint of disbelief. "We'll see you at a later date." she added, further confirming that the man surprisingly passed! "Uh...right." Hans, not wanting to question this got up and proceeded out.
Guess it was now time to prepare for the exploration...
