[attr="class","luthorscroll"] Well, these kinds of things always just had to happen to him? Right. [break][break] Luther would have had more time to curse out loud if he wasn’t already racing down the street as fast as his long legs could carry him. [break][break] “Hey! W-Wait!” The kid was fast, a lot faster than him. And it wasn’t so much of a kid, but a rather physically fit young man, probably about in his twenties or so and just happened to the thief that had made it away with the man’s wallet. [break][break] Of course, he knew, so many years back he’d been the pickpocket himself and the rolls were very well reversed. How ironic, how funny, even if he wasn’t laughing. He pushed past the crowded marketplace, nearly running into some patrons and passerby, muttering ‘sorry’s’ and ‘excuse me’s’ along the way. Today just wasn’t his day. [break][break] All he wanted to do was get something for his daughter with his shiny new, legally obtained money. And the first thing he would spend it on was getting that a new holder from her grimoire, the pretty lavender one with floral designs on the leather. He had done it, he’d made it that far. A job among the coveted Clover Kingdom Magic Knights, though he, unfortunately, decided not to wear his robe and didn’t want to break out a rampage of spells in the middle of a busy marketplace. Maybe if he chased him far enough out? [break][break] He wasn’t as young as he used to be... [break][break] Nor as well coordinated either. “Whoa!” Luther yelled, but his momentum had already carried him so far, and he went crashing into someone. He didn’t have time for this! [break][break] “Sorry! Sorry!” He shouted quickly, practically going to yank the unfortunate young man off the ground in a rather brash attempt to help him up to his feet. He couldn’t help him but give the kid a look over, make sure there were no broken bones, bruises, that sort of thing. Frantically scanning, he was already fearful he’d lost the thief he was chasing after. [break][break] “Ah, did you happen to see someone running around here?” He paused, realizing that he was almost referring to himself. “Oh, not me! I m-mean, someone about your age, a bit rough around the edges, um-uh, running off with something that does not belong to him?”
“When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”
Hans found himself in Sosshi once again minding his own business. He traveled through the town's busy marketplace, looking at the various items for sale on each stand. Unfortunately, he had little yul to purchase any of this since jobs have been rarely coming his way recently.I was tough for the dark mage to find clients these days. Interesting because one would expect a holder of a four leaf grimoire to attract a lot of attention...but then again the man mainly stuck around the Forsaken Region which didn't have the richest of people to begin with.
As Hans inspected a stand selling rusty looking weapons, he caught a glimpse of someone running past him. Turning his head to look in their direction, he noticed that the suspicious looking running appeared to be holding something close to him, looking back ever so often at someone who was giving chase, the merc assumed. Shaking his head a little, Hans turned to face the merchant. "Excuse me, miss? How much for tha-" Before he could finish, the merc could hear footsteps quickly drawing closer and closer until....
BAM!!
Whoever it was did not crash into Hans but instead a customer who was standing behind him! This caused the merc to gasp lightly before turning to face the two. The one responsible for the collision had already helped the lad up and was asking questions about someone running by. "Oi, piss off, old timer!" the guy who got knocked over blurted out as he wiped the dirt off his clothes. "Got my new shirt AND pants dirty!" He claimed before angrily walking off, flipping the older male off in the process. "Hope you burn in a fire..."
After witnessing this, Hans watched the angry man walk off, exhaling out his nose a little. Not everyone was exactly...joyful and nice. Feeling a bit bad, Hans looked back at the older guy if he was still there and pointed in the direction of where the robber went, assuming he meant him. "He went that way." he claimed casually. "Made a hard right into the food district."

"Oi, piss off, old timer!" [break][break]
Uh, he wasn’t really that old was he? The initial shock of the insult wore off rather quickly. Anyone would be rather insulted if they’d just practically been run over by someone else. “Uh, s-sorry?” He tried his apology again, this time bowing rather lowly with his hands together in the rather typical ‘please forgive me’ begging stance. Not that it really had mattered and he was left with no leads and a rather bruised ego.
[break][break]
“Uh….” There wasn’t anything else he could say and it looked the scene he had caused was just as quickly over as it had begun. Most others in the market simply went along around their business and the man frantically tried searching through the crowd to see if he could spot anything remotely like the pickpocket. [break][break]
“Agh!! This is really just my lucky day!” Shouting in frustrating, he exclaimed while through his head back and holding it with his hands. It was almost comical, really, to anyone who was still caring to watch.
[break][break]
"He went that way."
[break][break] He raised his head at the sound of the voice from behind him. He turned to see another young man (what was it with the kids these days?) perhaps actually say something to help him? Luther turned his head the same way the young man was pointing and he was already raising his legs to go in another full-on sprint.
[break][break]
The food district? That wasn’t that far, he could still catch them if he tried!
[break][break]
And then, Luther threw the upper half of his body down in a rushed bow of gratitude he didn’t know he could still have in him. “Ah! Thank you so much! I’ve just been so down on my luck and all I was trying to do was get something for my daughter for her birthday from my first real paycheck! And then what do you know some pickpocket decides to pick my pocket. And you know it’s probably all something I really deserve anyway but I’ve just been really trying to be a better dad to my kid and that’s a lot harder than I ever really thought it would especially ever since her mother died and I-” He paused, finally able to catch his breath from his rather winded explanation. None of that information had been… Actually, wholly necessary but the frazzled man’s mind hadn’t been able to hold it in.
[break][break] “Ah! I gotta catch up!” Immediately standing up straight again, Luther finally rushed in the same direction that the young man had pointed to, dodging through passerby and exclaiming sorry’s and excuse me’s once again. And hopefully, he wouldn’t go crashing into another unfortunate incident…
“When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”
As the guy dramatically bowed to Hans in gratitude, the merc immediately raised his arms up in a feeble attempt to stop him from doing this. Hans didn't feel like this was necessary, but before he could even say anything, the guy started to assault the dark mage with a barrage of words. "Er, this really isn't necessa-" It was hopeless. The merc's words were too low and being drowned out by the man.
The moment he mentioned having a daughter made Hans raise an eyebrow. So he's a father then? This caught the merc's attention, causing him to slowly lower his arms as he continued to listen. This guy was really unlucky...and chatty, but his words sounded sincere enough to Hans at least. Then to top it all off, he finished it with the mention of the child's dead mother. Hans lost his mother as well during that war between this kingdom and the Diamond kingdom, the place the dark mage originates from. Although he did eventually get a father figure in his life, Hans' biological father was still a complete ass...unlike this man.
Whoever this guy's daughter was, she's lucky to have him.
Hans watched the guy run off after finally gathering his bearings. He looked back at the merchant who looked back at him questionably. Looks like he was going to have to browse these items another time.
With a sigh, Hans ran off in the man's direction. "Hey!" Hans tried to call out to him, and if he managed to catch up, he'd give the guy a nod, one of quiet acknowledgement. He wanted to help this poor dad get back what was his, and with the amount of people around today, it definitely doesn't hurt to have an extra pair of eyes....Plus part of him was worried that the father might run into more folks if left alone.
If they continued to keep the same direction, the two would end up at the food district which also had its fair share of people around, one of them being the daring robber who...was currently at one of the stands trying to buy something with the stolen money!

[attr="class","luthorscroll"] “Whoa!” [break][break] The man shouted just in time as he rounded the corner, passing on to the direction that the young man had told him. It was only the back of his mind if he wondered if he was being a bit too rude in regards to what little help he had gotten. Well, he hadn’t the time to… [break][break] "Hey!" [break][break] But then someone, was running beside him? [break][break] It was the same young man! Luther had a moment to be surprised that he had followed, and the dark-haired youth gave him a simple nod in return. “Oh, hey!” He wasn’t sure why the kid decided to follow along, maybe the young man wanted to make sure he did get his money back? Well, what a nice kid! [break][break] Nodding back, Luther continued his mad dash down the marketplace. And finally, the made their way through the crowd. Luther stopped one moment, dark eyes scanning the busy corner until he spotted the same robber, already buying something with his stolen money?! Maybe Luther should’ve given props to the kid for being so bold. [break][break] “Hey! Don’t go spending things that don’t belong to you!” Luther yelled out. [break][break] “Huh?! Forget it old man!” Immediately stopping the transaction, the robber made another run for it. “Just give it up already!” And the insult was complete with a stuck-out tongue and raspberry. [break][break] “I’m not that old!” Luther responded, though several passersby surrounding all gave the man an odd look. Breathing heavily, Luther was ready to shout out again. The kid was already running down the street again, just how fast was he? “Ah… I might be getting too old for this!” Luther cursed before running after the kid again. He really should have brought his broom with him… [break][break]
“Ah! I’ve got it!” He snapped his fingers in the air, turning to his newfound partner. “Hey! Uh, let’s take the side streets, maybe we can cut him off and box him in!” [break][break] And hopefully, with a plan in place, they could finally catch that thief!
“When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”
Hans had to give it to the thief being so ballsy to spend the stolen money so soon....and within the same area. Either that, or the crook was an idiot which the merc was leaning more towards. Hans looked at the thief with a dumbfounded look on his face.
"...Dumbass..." Hans muttered under his breathe.
It wasn't until the father yelled out that Hans snapped back to reality, looking at the older male then back at the crook who noticed the two, and rushed off yet again, all while teasing the poor guy. Of course, Hans was one of the people giving this guy a questionable look over his frustration about his age. "Ermm..." The dark mage rubbed the back of his neck as he looked away. It was best not to comment further on this even though the merc was no stranger to being blunt. The guy had enough going on as is.
His attention then returned to the male as he hatched an idea! The guy was no spring chicken, but at least he still had brains. "Right." With another nod, Hans proceeded to head off in the direction pointed to!
With this going on, the thief continued to run down the district, bumping and shoving folks out of his way since he did not have the time...or manners to be polite. The people he ran into cursed, and yelled in his direction, but that did little to nothing to stop this man.
"Outta my way, lamers! Don't got time for your shit!" He claimed while raising the stolen money up in his hand, eyeing it with a cocky grin. "At this pace, I'll be home fre-" Not paying attention, the man collided with a wagon that was being pushed, holding mountains of tomatoes! Both he and the wagon fell over, causing endless tomatoes to come splatting on the ground much to the tomato merchant's dismay.
"MY TOMATOES!!!"

“Ermm…” [break][break]
Of course, one of the more skeptical noises had to come from the kid who had gone through all the trouble of at least trying to help him. While it did lead a more desperate look from the elder man, all was set aside in favor of hatching a plan to finally catch that thief. [break][break]
The two made their split, off each for taking an alternative route that would lead them, ultimately to the same crossing, just as the thief would have made their way through the busy marketplace! Could Luther really depend on a stranger to help him out just this once? He’d had his impression that most youth, for one reason or another, weren’t really all that into respecting their elders. Or maybe he’d just been unfortunate enough only to run into those kind of youth. Regardless, this was his real chance now! Racing down the significantly less crowded alleyway, he only had one goal in mind. [break][break]
This was all for his daughter! [break][break]
Take the side streets and box him in. He did have to repeat that to himself and then he did take a turn back to the main thoroughfare. [break][break]
“Hah!” A triumphant yell sounded from his voice when he broke back into the street, but it met with an equally as loud, and rather devasted cry. [break][break]
“MY TOMATOES!!” [break][break]
Huh?! The scene before him wasn’t one he expected. Tomatoes decorated the ground chaotically, some already smashed, most scattering around the area. But he did spot the thief! All… in a bit of a daze on the ground. [break][break]
The tomatoes weren’t really his problem at the moment. [break][break]
“Hey!” Luther lunged for the thief on the ground, who was still just getting his bearings. But it just seemed that Luther himself was only a moment too late. [break][break] “Just forget it!” The thief cried out, dodging Luther’s grab, and at once, the old man went tumbling into the ground as well. And the thief was about to make another quick getaway!
“When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”
Splitting up with the older guy, Hans ran down his path which was almost as busy as the previous district. Still, he didn't let up and dodged out of the way of various people thanks to his younger and much more agile body. "Sorry." is what the man muttered a few times as he nearly bumped into folks since he couldn't waste time making a more formal apology. He was on a mission, a mission to help some random old guy...get his money back.
....Why was Hans doing this again?
His running nearly slowed as this thought ran across his head. For a moment, he forgot why he was trying to help this guy...and for free!? None of this had anything to do with the merc and he could've just continued on with his window shopping in peace. But then the dark mage remembered that the guy mentioned something. He's a father, wanting to buy something for his daughter. This guy felt like a bumbling fool who'd trip over his own feet if left alone...but he was a father, and a determined one, and that alone was enough for the merc to help him out!
Finally making it to his destination, and it seems like the father made it before him surprisingly. Hans was ready to subdue this thief, but the first thing he witnessed was not the culprit....but rather the mess of tomatoes all over the ground a familiar looking tomato vendor desperately trying to pick them all up, seemingly speaking to some of them in a hushed tone. The merc could've swore he had to do a job for this person before, but none of that was important...
The father tried lunging at the crook but he was a little too late! The thief got up and started to make his escape...or at least he would've if he hadn't run into Hans who had a cocked back fist with his name on it. "Hu-Wha-" Before he could finish his confused rambling, Hans gave the lad one clean punch to the face, making him fall to the ground and drop the dad's wallet. Lifting the wallet up, the merc would look at it for a second before walking over to its owner.
"Catch." is all Hans said before tossing it in the man's direction.

“Woah!”
[break][break]
Admittedly, he wasn’t as nimble as he had once been. Certainly, it was hard to believe that so many years ago, he’d been doing the same thing, picking pockets and running away like a thief. The thing was, he couldn’t afford to do that anymore, not when he had a daughter to take care of. If anything happened to him that landed him behind bars or worse… he wouldn’t forgive himself.
[break][break]
Not when he had promised her mother that he wouldn’t make the same mistakes again.
[break][break]
First, he had to get up, and the dizzying tumble didn’t help much with that. But yes, first get and go back to chasing that thief. But suddenly, he’d almost forgotten that for just this one time, he had a partner! The dark-haired kid showed up just in time to give the poor thief a run for his money (well, Luther’s money to boot). Luther had to wince at the rather blunt punch to the face the criminal received but was more than grateful to see that the dark-haired youth had pulled through.
[break][break]
“Huh?!” The kid suddenly threw the wallet back at him, to which Luther juggled around more than a few times before successfully catching hold of it. “Hah! Success!” He celebrated a bit too loudly, garnering some more looks from random in the crowd. Regardless, he’d finally gotten his wallet back. He walked back over to the young man who had helped him out.
[break][break]
Luther was a fair bit taller than the kid, but he could tell that the young man was fairly built himself. The mage was quite used to others not being as tall as him anyway...
[break][break]
“My tomatoes…!”
[break][break]
Luther flinched at the sudden outcry, along to look over his shoulder to the same unfortunate tomato vendor who’d been a victim to collateral damage during the chase… Raising his eyebrows, Luther adjusted his flat cap and turned slightly away, motioning for the kid to follow him, leaving both the vendor and the unfortunate pick pocket-er behind. “Ah… we’ll be on our way then…!”
[break][break]
Once out of earshot, the man was finally able to relax a little. He took his hat off and then gave the young man another formal bow of thanks, likely dipping his body a bit too deeply for a show of gratitude.
[break][break]
“Thanks again so much! I don’t know what I would have done! There’s just this really cute grimoire holder that she wanted, I mean it’s pretty lavender color and has got flowers and was so happy when she saw it that I knew I had to get it for her! A-And now thanks to you, I really can!” The look of gratitude on the man’s face was perhaps a bit more than it should have, but after such an eventful afternoon who could blame him?
“When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”
"Wha-uh..." Hans watched with a bit of hesitance on his face as the guy fumbled with his wallet. The moment he managed to get a firm grasp on it, Hans rubbed the back of his head nervously. To think someone as clumsy as this actually exits....
The job was done...if one could consider this a job. With the amount of odd jobs, Hans has taken up in the past, this wasn't really outside of the realm of possibility. Only difference is that the merc wasn't getting paid for this which was kind of disappointing.
As the older male got up and approached Hans, the dark mage didn't notice how towering he was until now to the point of Hans having to lift his head up a little to even make proper eye contact! Hans wasn't self conscious about his height, but after seeing this guy...he couldn't help but feel a little envious.
With the two departing from this train wreck of a scene which was probably a good idea, the father once again dropped into a bow, but Hans didn't attempt to stop him this time as it seemed futile. The merc just stood there looking awkward as the grateful guy started to speak. There was just something about chatty folks that make the dark mage tense up, but as he started talking more about his daughter and what he wanted to give her, Hans found himself loosening up with a small smile forming on his face which he was unaware of.
Looking past how bumbling and...weird this guy is, the fact that he went through all of this for his little girl was admirable in Hans' eyes. Hans wishes that more parents and guardians were like this...and he honestly wished that his father was like this man. There was also this warm feeling inside of Hans. It felt really nice to be of some help to this guy, regardless of getting any reward or not. "Um...yeah. Don't mention it." Hans claimed, shifting his eyes away as he rubbed the back of his neck, still not the best in these moments.
"Just be careful next time, or I'll have to charge you." the merc claimed plainly with a nod, attempting to joke a little, something he'd not dare to try years ago. With the experiences he's been having thus far, Hans was slowly coming out of his shell, whether he realized it or not.
If there wasn't anything else, Hans would attempt to leave, seeing that he is no longer needed.

Admittedly, maybe he was exaggerating his own… klutzy of nature. But when so many things were happening at once, it was hard to keep up. He was an old man, older than most Magic Knights when they first joined the order. A lot of the time, he felt out of place.
[BREAK][BREAK]
To sum it up, he just wasn't as young as he used to be.
[BREAK][BREAK]
But besides just being older, he wanted to change into someone that his daughter could be proud of. That’s why he tried, that’s why he had become a Magic Knight and that’s why he’d just chased some petty thief across town who’d stolen his money!
[BREAK][BREAK] "Um… yeah. Don't mention it."
[BREAK][BREAK]
And he was more than thankful for the kindness of strangers! He stood up tall once again, raising his hand so he could give the kid a simple thumbs-up gesture. That was all he needed to say, thanks. [BREAK][BREAK]
“Ah, I get it, kids these days only get to do one good deed a day?” He laughed out loud, maybe hinting that once he’d been a teenager too. Well, some people just didn’t like broadcasting the fact they could be kind souls, which really, was the better kind of person.
[BREAK][BREAK]
But then, he was left in a bit of a shock when said young man said he’d charge him. The metaphorical giant sweatdrop seemed more than visible on his forehead as he visually grimaced at the thought of giving up even more money. “I’ve b-barely saved enough f-for this one purchase, eheh…”
[BREAK][BREAK] “T-Though fair is fair.” Luther sighed, resting his hand on the back of his neck. His posture was less than stellar as he shrugged his shoulders downward. He nodded his head once more, tipping his hat to the kid. The dark-haired youth was already making his movements to leave and the Black Bull made no more gestures to stop him. He was already walking to the store he needed to go to, wallet securely in hand.
[BREAK][BREAK]
“Maybe we’ll end up doing business one day. Thanks again!” He gave one last smile to end off their interaction. There was just something nice about, doing nice things for other people. And it made him feel a little bit better about the youth of the day… [BREAK][BREAK]
