Ah…Aries Garse, the Capital of Rogues in the Clover Kingdom. A place where the snow turns grey and sloshy on the streets from the smoke, dust and mud. Well the Spirit of the Holiday shall not take lightly to it this summer. The snow shall remain white…until all they see is white. MUAHAHAHAHA!

Hans and presumably Suna were on a horse-drawn carriage en route to Aries Garse on this chilly morning. It was the beginning of the Yule season which meant that the annual Lighting of the Tallest Tree was just around the corner. Hans never thought much about this event, mostly because he was unable to go when he was younger, but the sound mage appeared to have quite the opposite feeling. One of the traditions of this tree lighting is for people to bring their own ornaments whether handcrafted by themselves or not. The merc wasn't sure what Suna planned to bring, or if she decided to make something...but the guy had an idea on what to take with him, which has once again led him back to one of his own childhood homes.

"You didn't have to come you know, Suna." Hans said as he looked over to the elf, assuming she's sitting next to him. "I was just going to grab something real quick." he claimed. The man very much enjoys his lady's company...but he also wanted to keep what he was going to get a surprise, and her being here was sort of running the risk of ruining that. But that wasn't the only reason, however.

"Also the people of this town aren't exactly as...festive as most others around this time." Hans then looked forward and started to recall his past Yule seasons here. Hans was sure he didn't have to elaborate more on this since this wasn't Suna's first time here. The town isn't exactly the greatest place, especially during this season, but there were still some good moments, especially when it involved his mother. The merc then realized that his words may have come off as a bit harsh. Hopefully, he didn't put a damper on the woman's holiday spirit, but just in case, he gently placed a hand on her leg, or on top of her own hand if it was already occupying that space, and glanced over to her with a light smile. Hans turned completely to face her and was about to go in for a kiss....until the carriage came to a sudden stop.

"Hey, you two should uh take a look outside!" the carriage driver said, with some concern in his tone.

Hans stopped and turned to look out of his window, and it was...snowing! From this angle, it appeared to just be ordinary snow, but the moment Hans opened the door to look out and forward, his eyes widened at the sight of a blizzard seemingly over the town of Aries Garse itself! "This is as far as I'm able to bring you guys I'm afraid. Do you want me to take ya back?" the carriage driver asked. Hans then looked over to Suna before looking back at the barely visible town. "No, I'll be fine." Hans claimed as he stepped completely out of the carriage before looking at Suna once more. He wasn't sure if Suna will decide to stay or not, but Hans was determined to get that mystery item. ...With his only regret being that he didn't bring any gloves.

Little did they know just how long this blizzard has been occurring, the people that are in trouble....and the one responsible for all of this....

Suna could see her own breaths come out in white puffs in the frigid winter air, despite being inside a carriage. They could have easily flown out here to Aries Garse, but it was so cold, she was sure she would have froze onto her magical broom halfway on the trip. Besides, it was nice being inside and not doing anything besides looking out the window and seeing the wintery scenery passing by outside.

"You didn't have to come you know, Suna. I was just going to grab something real quick."

"I know I didn’t have to...but I still did anyways." She replied cheekily. "Besides, it’s no fun being cooped up at home all by my lonesome self. But," her eyes twinkled merrily, "I promise I’ll close my eyes and not look if you’re here to grab something that should be a secret."

As for the townsfolks and their level of festivity, the elf only shrugged her shoulders lightly. "I understand that not everyone celebrates it, and that’s fine with me." Her impression of this particular town was mixed—while there were many memorable memories with Hans, there were also a few that were not as pleasant. But she was not about to let that dampen her joy...not when she felt his hand on top of hers. She smiled, and her eyes fluttered close when she saw that he was about to kiss her. That is, until the carriage driver called out to them, a hint of worry in his tone.

They both looked out at the same time, and Suna’s eyes grew wide at the snow. It was not the snow that was the problem, but the amount of snow that was concerning. "Oh dear, are the townspeople all right?" She had gotten out of her seat to get a closer look at the situation outside. Then the driver was explaining how he could not take them any closer, and she turned to look at Hans, who had started to climb out. "Well, let’s go then!" She jumped out, and was immediately greeted with a blast of cold wind. She wrapped her arms around herself. "N-now that’s c-cold." Though she was bundled up fairly warmly, this type of cold was biting, going all the way through her layers and into her bones.

"G-Guess this is our l-little exercise f-for the day." Her teeth were chattering, but her eyes were still bright. She waved goodbye to the carriage driver, and started stomping her way towards town. The closer they got, the more they would be able to see just how much destruction the blizzard had wrecked on the town. Even as they arrived at the edge of town, they would see that the streets were completely white with snow, and that it was several feet deep.

"L-Look, Hans!" She tugged at his arm and pointed to some of the residential houses. "T-They’re completely snowed in! C-Can’t we help t-them?" She could see a few faces pressed against their windows, their faces begging for help. She was sure the mercenary was not the type to just leave people wanting in need, but there was the question of how they could help, especially since they had no shovels or anything of that kind.

Just then, Suna heard some shuffling and tapping. She whipped her head around to see a slightly bent and older gentleman walk up to them, tapping his cane as he went. In his free hand were two shovels. In the cold and deserted streets, there was only him. Who was he? And how did he know that they needed shovels? Strange indeed.

"Helloo there, you youngsters! I see you two might be needing these?" He held out the two shovels, a knowing look in his eyes.

Suna would have been wary of him. She should be. But was she going to refuse the offer? Of course not. "Thank you, sir!" And took them, handing one to Hans if he was nearby. When she turned back around, the elderly man had vanished. "W-Wait, wasn’t he just here? How did he move so fast..." There were no footprints either. This was getting more and more strange.

For a moment, she just stood there, very much at loss, until she heard the sound of banging. From the house closest to them, she could see the front door shake as the people inside the house were presumably trying to get her attention. "Coming, coming!" She ran on over to them and started digging away the snow around their front door. Whether Hans decided to work with her was up to him, as there were plenty of other houses that needed their front doors cleared out...

Suna didn't waste any time bringing up the secret something Hans came here for. The man wasn't even all that surprised to hear her say this since it was pretty obvious, and when it comes to Suna....almost nothing gets past her. "If you say so." Still, the dark mage was a little skeptical about the elf's words. He would just need to be careful when going to get that mysterious ornament.

But right now....that was the least of his concerns.

The couple was now staring at the blizzard covered town in disbelief. Hans thought back but couldn't recall ever seeing this town in such a state. This was new, but the merc wasn't going to let this snowstorm stop him, and it appears that Suna was with him on this, but appeared to be more concerned about the citizens. At first, Hans was too focused on getting to his old home that he didn't consider how badly this storm might've been affecting the townsfolk, especially since this was something new to them most likely. Looks like he may have to look out for anyone who's been caught in this blizzard. These are his people after all...

With a nod, Hans paid the carriage driver, and the couple was now off, heading into snow-covered town, and disappearing from the sight of the driver....

Hans was cold as well, but he still tried to keep up a strong front and marched through the increasing snow. His hands were shivering a bit from the temperature, and so he stuffed his hands in his pocket, but it wasn't doing him much good. "I-I s-suppose you're r-right." Hans commented on the little exercise comment. Even in this bone-chilling weather, Suna was still able to get a little chuckle out of her mercenary. Still noticing how cold she was, Hans tried to lean in a little closer to her to give warmth as they walk, but then she tugged on the man's clothing and brought his attention to some of the houses.

The residents...they were completely snowed in! It still probably beats being out in this cold, but they were still trapped in their homes with no way out. Hans gritted his teeth as he saw the desperate pleading faces through some of the windows. "D-dammit..." He wanted to help them, but neither of them had any shovels or anything else to dig them out! Hans had his sword...but that wouldn't have helped much. "W-we need to find some shove-"

Just like Suna, Hans heard the taps of a cane as well and quickly turned around. To both their surprise...it was an elderly man...holding a pair of shovels? Why was this elderly man out here all by himself, how come Hans didn't sense his mana. Perhaps he was concealing it? But most importantly...where did he get those shovels!?

Hans eyed the friendly-looking man suspiciously, but still, he took one of the shovels with a bit of hesitance. He then took his eyes off of him and took a look at the shovel. It appeared to be just your ordinary everyday shovel, nothing out of the ordinary. As Suna attempted to thank the man, Hans looked up as well, and his eyes widened a bit at the male's...sudden absence. "I-I, I don't know..." The merc replied, just as confused as the elf. Hans started to get brief flashbacks of those old ladies, he and Suna encountered a long time ago, ending in something similar to this. "Let's just...g-get going." The merc did not want to dwell on this any longer which fortunately he didn't need to due to the constant sound of banging coming from the houses.

Suna ran off to aid one of the homes, and Hans was just about to assist her until he heard a separate banging coming from a house on the opposite side. It would make more sense for the couple to split up, cover more ground. With a nod, Hans ran up to the other house and started shoveling, putting all his strength into the work! Soon, all of the snow would be away from that house's front door and the owner, a middle-aged looking woman with a child would open it and look around before setting his eyes on the merc. "Th-thank you so much! she said. Hans gave her a nod before moving onto the next house.

As Hans dug through the second house, a woman showed up to the window with a look of utter disgust on her face. Noticing this, the merc paused for a second, but tried to ignore her and continued to dig. But once he was done, the woman opened the door, and Hans was expecting a thanks from her as well...but instead she attempted to throw a can at his head which he was able to dodge. "Get your filthy hands away from my property!" The woman yelled before slamming the door shut. Hans blinked a few times before letting out a sigh. This wouldn't be Aries Garse without these sort of people after all....

Next was the third home, and the merc walked over to it and started digging. As he dug, a dog had shown up at one of the windows, its tongue out of its mouth happily before it started barking at the dark mage. The owner of this house and dog, a man then walked up to the window wondering what the fuss was about, and started to smile as well, raising his cup of warm cocoa at the man as if he wanted to say "cheers". Once Hans finished, the guy opened the door, and was about to thank the merc...only for the dog to run out instead and jump on the dark mage, nearly toppling him over. The dog wagged its tail happily and licked the merc's face over and over until his chuckling owner managed to calm him down with a whistle. The excited pup got down and gave Hans one more bark before running back into the house. With a sheepish smile, Hans wiped the dog spit off of his face and continued on.

Now the fourth house. It was ordinary, just like the previous homes. Hans walked over and started digging, but as he did it, the merc could hear the vaguest sound of...squeaking coming from inside. A little curious, the merc walked over to one of the snow covered windows, and wiped it off. With eyes widened and cheeks a little flushed, Hans witnessed the source of the squeaking, a man and a woman....playing an aggressive game of "leapfrog". The merc nearly dropped his shovel but quickly picked it back up and scurried away from the window to continue digging....trying his best to forget what he saw. With the digging done here, Hans could still hear the...squeaking, so he decided not to stick around any longer and moved on.

This all took a lot of time, but it was certainly worth it to get these people free.

Now, Hans was marching his way to a fifth house, and this one....practically had snow towering over the front of it! How so much snow ended up on this home so fast was anyone's guess, but the merc still had a job to do.

He approached the house and the first thing he noticed was a rather large looking snowman....also holding a shovel. It looks like someone out here was still able to have a little fun in this raging storm. Ignoring the snowman, Hans went up to the house and began digging. At first, it looked like that no progress was being made, making the man sigh as he stopped for a moment. "C-can't give up now..." the man muttered under his cold breath before digging again. It took a lot longer than the previous four houses....but he eventually did it. Breathing heavily, Hans threw his shovel to the ground and looked up at his handy work. The house was free from its snowy prison, and a lone girl with a teddy bear was looking out the window with a shocked expression on her face. She then started to bounce up and down excitingly and ran off from view, most likely to get her parents. Hans smiled a little before turning around to look at the snow-covered lawn "Hm?"....and noticed that the snowman was now missing.

But before he could ponder more about this, or about where Suna was, the door behind Hans opened, and he was suddenly pulled into the house....the door slamming shut right behind him....

Shoveling was hard work. Nobody ever told her how tiring it could be. It was almost as tiring as running a hundred laps around the Crimson Lions’ base at the break of dawn. Almost as hard as going through that personalized workout the vice captain gave her. Almost as hard as...well, she should not be comparing anyways. There were many other less fortunate souls out there, so she should count herself blessed that she has not had some of those harrowing experiences that scars people for life.

Suna had noticed that Hans looked just as confused as she was, but had taken the shovel anyways. It was just a regular shovel, and who would be mean enough to play a prank on them? Not when the town was under snow. At least, that was what she figured. He had gone over to clear another house, so she focused on clearing hers. As she got to the door, it flew open and a haggard-looking young woman was shaking her hand and thanking her profusely. From behind her skirts peeked two small children, who waved shyly at the elf. Suna responded in kind and waved farewell. "Wish you have a great Yuletide!" She said, before leaving for the next house.

With that note of encouragement, it bolstered her energy and she started on the second house. This one belonged to a young couple, who invited her in for hot chocolate, but Suna only shook her head, politely declining. "Maybe once I finish clearing more houses? Thank you for the offer, though!" There were more houses she needed to help, so she took her leave and kept going.

The third house was quite a peculiar case. It was silent and quiet, but out of the corner of her eye, she could see that the window curtains were swaying slightly. Someone, whoever it was, was definitely in there, and probably peeking out. Suna continued shoveling, though kept an eye on that window. But even as her shovel hit the front door, she did not catch sight of who was behind that curtain. That was fair, as they were probably wary of her good intentions. She did, however, call out a "Happy Yuletide!" to them before she left. Even if she was not being acknowledged for her work, it still made her glad that she could help out the town, one house at a time.

The fourth house was also interesting. It seemed to be a single man living by himself...and he acted strangely. The whole time she was shoveling a path to his door, he kept staring out at her. It was unsettling, but it was not like him looking could hurt her, right? It did make her uneasy, though, so she quickened her movements and worked quickly, hoping to get away from that stare as soon as possible. She turned and was just about to leave when she heard the front door open…

Suna ran for it. She did not really want to interact with such a creepy character, so she just ran away. Thankfully, the guy did not follow her. No one in their right mind would, not in this blizzard-covered town and chilling cold. The elf did, however, peek back, and saw the man once again at his place by the window, staring in her direction. She shuddered, but not from the cold. The sooner she could get away from those disturbing eyes, the better.

Rounding a corner, she saw an elderly lady waving to her from her window, and immediately Suna waved back and got right to work towards that direction. This was her fifth house, and as she shovelled her way to the door, it opened up slowly and delicious scents came wafting out.

"Care for a cookie, dearie?" The grandma-like figure was shorter than she thought, with wrinkles all around, but her eyes were kind. "If you have time, come on in."

Suna immediately felt at ease. There was no sense of ill intent, and besides, she was tired and hungry. A cookie sounded like heaven to her right now. "That would be lovely, thank you." She stood up straight and stretched. Her back protested and her arms ached, but her heart was warm. She left the shovel by the door and stepped inside the house. Though plain and ancient in its furnishings, it was warm and cozy. The kitchen was also fragrant with so many good smells, it made her mouth water.

"Thank you so much for inviting me in. The weather outside is terribly cold." Suna said, then bit into the cookie that was offered. It was fresh and hot out of the oven, and it tasted simply divine. She closed her eyes briefly to savor it, and when she opened them, there was also a glass of milk in front of her to go with the cookie.

The older lady nodded. "Indeed. I’ve never seen this type of magic in Aries Garse before."

"Magic?" Suna frowned a little, not understanding. "Someone using snow magic to cover the town? But why?"

"Perhaps. This is not natural, so it must be some other strange things going on..."

"Oh?" Suna leaned forward. "Can you tell me more?"
