The call had gone out after the slaughter of the Yeti that a meeting was to be held. The mercenaries involved with purging the deer and Yeti, as well as the Azure Deer's knights were all being called upon. They wanted to concentrate their information and discover what the source of all this was. To Bengal, who had conquered Krampus so many times, he couldn't help but feel an eery familiarity with the creatures. They were all incredibly similar to those faced within the dungeon. That said, there were a few key differences.
Namely strength. They were weaker than he recalled for some, stronger for others. The deer were much weaker then they'd been in the dungeon. Which made sense as they were nothing more than normal animals mutated by mana. Not true Mana Beasts. The Yeti had been stronger than the average beasts of similar nature in Krampus. But were weaker than the larger titanic variants that were on the level of the White Witch. So it was only monsters from Krampus' level of the dungeon, something that was odd to him. Especially considering the mana zone had re-spawned a new dungeon instead of Krampus' usual.
To top it off... his sword, which was made from Krampus' spine he ripped out with his bare hands, would respond to the mana of these creatures ever so slightly. It would pulse between his fingertips as if calling out to them. Overall, it was undoubtedly Krampus's influence in some way. He simply wasn't sure how just yet. Was the mana zone of the Dungeon still active, but too weak to properly form? Causing these mutations and weaker variants of the original monsters? Or was it something more?
He didn't know. But such information would be useful for the Deer and others to know. Due to this, when he was invited alongside June Bengal was quick to agree. It wasn't going to be much of a burden this time. They were given several days' notice so nothing was... interrupted, this time. Currently, he stood outside of his home. June had come to stay with him for a few days for training and entertainment. So it was a bit of a trip to Nairn. Thankfully with their travel speed it was a non-issue.
The large man waited by the door, stretching and rotating his shoulders in their joints while Krampus' claw hummed lowly at his side. The ring around his finger giving soft glimmers of low heat as the veins of obsidian occasionally glowed red-hot. The two magic items from their respective Dungeons preparing as much as their owner was for what was to come. When he felt June's ki approaching, he glanced over his shoulder toward the door. Offering a brief smile.
"Morning, Flower," he murmured in greeting, leaning down the moment she was available and kissing her. Fingers sliding into her hair and petting her, the other around her waist. Simply enjoying her presence before his nose nuzzled against her own briefly. Straightening afterward and tilting his head to the side slightly. "Ready to go to this grand meeting?" he asked, tone amused.

June wasn't surprised when Bengal informed her they were going to a meeting with Azure deer about the town she and Bengal had been to twice before on missions. Why would the yetis be the last of the problems those villagers faced? Odd creatures showing up once was by chance, twice could be considered a coincidence but Bengal's words about the wrongness of the area made that unlikely. Three made a pattern. Something was up with the town and the surrounding forests.
Although the Silva knew something wasn't right, she couldn't pinpoint what that "something" was. She knew it was mana related, but anyone with a half decent education would have been able to gather that much. It annoyed June that picking apart the yetis corpses hadn't revealed much about the situation at hand. Only that creatures resembling the monsters in Krampus' dungeon were appearing near this town in Nairn. That pointed to oddities in the mana zone.
June suspected that something bigger was at play, but she had no evidence, just a hunch. The chance to learn more about the strange occurrences was accepted easily. Even if she didn't personally care about the people affected by this mess, the short Silva was curious by nature. Anything interesting warranted investigation, poking, prodding, and studying. Her thirst for knowledge outshined even her lust for power.
When she met Bengal, the noblewoman wasn't grumpy --unlike last time, June genuinely wanted to be here even if it was for her own selfish reasons.
"Good morning, Tori," she greeted the man in his mother tongue. Ever since they had come to emotional blows on the first mission in this town, June had been making an effort to speak to her fiancé in his native tongue more often. The way he responded to her her even at his lowest moments when she used his mother tongue revealed how important it was to him. For now, June stuck to simple phrases. Communicating more complex ideas led to littering her speech with mistakes that were simply unacceptably by her standards.
June set aside her pride when she practiced with Hiyori, but with Bengal, the Magic Knight stuck to phrases and grammar structures she had already gained some mastery over.
"I am more than ready," the short woman replied to her love's question with a brief smirk. "I want to know what's causing all these disturbances. I've taken a personal interest in this particular mystery."
The noblewoman entered the building on Bengal's arm and sat between him and another man she didn't recognize --probably a member of the Azure Deer knight squad. A few more people filed in after the Ryuutei-Silva duo, filling the remaining seats around the long table. The mix of Magic Knights, nobles, and citizens was an interesting one, June mused while she took stock of who all had shown up.
A red haired woman at the head of the table cleared her throat. "Now that everyone is here, we can begin. I presume you all know why we are here, but I will summarize the events that lead up to this meeting for anyone who is caught unawares."
Before she could get any further, the whole building shook and a low rumble filled the air.
A few surprised outbursts filled the air.
"What was that?" someone asked aloud. Already a handful of people were headed towards the windows or the door to see the source of the commotion.
The scent of peppermint began to fill the air and June frowned. "Do you smell that, Ben?"
Without waiting for a reply, June rushed outside. This wasn't going to end well.

Bengal's lip twitched upward in clear approval as June used his native tongue. Leaning down and kissing her a second time in silent thanks. Her pronunciation was getting better by the day, the effort she was pouring into her meetings with Hiyori appeared to be doing wonders. Smiling softly, Bengal lifted a hand up and caressed along her cheek before straightening. She was trying to show her effort all the more lately, and it wasn't something he'd missed.
"Thank you, Hana," the word was his nickname for her, but in his native tongue. Flower. Nuzzling her briefly before straightening, electricity crackling across his body before launching forward. Dashing through the surroundings along with his lover as mana trailed through both of them. June top her chariot of rippling water and Bengal through the air with his wings.
-- After they had arrived, the actual meeting was a bit different. It appeared they were all going to have a bit of a sit-down around a large chamber and listen to information. That was useful. The views of some others would certainly help him process what was going on a bit more efficiently. However, before the meeting could properly begin, Bengal felt an... unnatural life force. His brow furrowed, turning his head toward the window in time for the sound to blast through the building.
June's comment on the smell caused Bengal to grunt softly. Lifting a hand up and pressing down on the chair to haul himself to his feet. Cracking his neck before his hands opened, mana flowing between his fingertips as his gaze focused on the window. Outside a massive red and white stripped limb passed, smashing into the stone below. Humanoid. The ki was unnatural. His eyes narrowed slightly as his mana flowed along his body... before he saw a familiar silver whisp of hair beneath him. Bengal shoved the window open, causing cold wind to burst inside.
Knights were yelling. The church was evacuating and providing shelter. Before them was a massive golem of some sort, formed from raw candycane by the scent and appearance. Another trait reminiscent of Krapus. The gingerbread men had been fast and similar in design. Lowering a hand to his hip, Bengal drew the black coal blade. Miasma began to leak from it, swirling around him as he lifted the edge and aimed it at the massive Golem.
"Alright, none of that," he murmured simply, before mana burst along his muscles. Spreading across his legs, arms and chest. It had already damaged one building and the road. He needed to ensure no more damage came to the town. His eyes slid down toward June.
"Flower! Protect the buildings from the body!" He called firmly, spinning the blade once before his heels dug into the ground. He didn't even need magic to deal with this. The mana flow ended, content with what was to come as he launched into the air. Spinning the blade once before suddenly slashing downward as the massive Golem groaned. Arm swinging toward another building--only for the crack of candy to fill the air. Shards of the sugary material flew in every direction.
Along with the massive limb that came tumbling through the air, falling toward the street. Bengal trusted his lover to handle it. Shifting his grip on the blade and spinning as the Golem stumbled, groaning, trying to recover before the blade removed its head. Then another swing, slamming it downward and bisecting the massive body with a shockwave of raw force. Muscles flexing as his body smashed into half of the golem's bisected torso. Sending it flying toward the ground, and the water waves he could already see June creating.
His hand extended, grabbing a nearby ledge to catch himself before dropping shortly after. Grasping another ledge, and a final one to land lightly on the ground. Grunting and straightening as he carefully glanced over the surroundings. But there was nothing, his brow arched.
"Only one, huh?" he mused, walking toward June where she was manipulating the water to support and protect the town.

As soon as she reached the doorway, she saw it. Craning her neck to take in the view before her, June felt something sink in the pit of her stomach. Preventing massive property damage and a myriad of casualties was going to be a challenge, pushing her defensive capabilities to their limit.
Fortunately the rest of the people that had attended the meeting were already in action, helping to evacuate civilians away from the situation and giving June and Bengal room to work.
June had already pulled her grimoire free of the straps that fixed it to her hip, the pages flipping furiously on their own in response to her will, when Bengal asked her to defend the town from this giant golem's flailing. June could cast magic without opening the book but in order to perform the extent of defense creation necessary for this fight, it was better to have it at hand. The text, neat, hand written caligraphy, began to glow silver as several Protection Orbs burst into existence. The orbs were large, spanning forty meters each, and able to encapsulate some of the shorter and mid sized buildings.
One of the Protection Orbs pushed against the monster, forcing it to stumble back with steps that shook the ground beneath its feet. Those who were slower to retreat from the monster's rampage were able to run through the watery orbs with no trouble. This was not the case for the golem, which slammed an arm into the orb that pushed it back as if it was irritated by what happened.
The Protection Orb undulated, the force of the blow rippling throughout the condensed water without breaking it. The water simply softened to absorb the impact of the blow and distributed what force remained evenly across its surface. The Orb shot water at the peppermint monster in an attempt to drown the attacker.
June stood safely within the confines of one of her Protection Orbs, watching the beast struggle against her defenses.
Bengal's approach was met with a disgruntled grumble. "Typically, golems don't just appear outside of dungeons unless someone is around to summon them. This is highly irregular."
Her observations were concise and to the point. They needed to confirm that there wasn't some bad actor in the vicinity who had summoned the beast. If such a person or being was present, then they needed to root them out and extinguish the source of the problems. Simply killing the golem might not be the end of the town's problems in such an event. The source of such irregularities needed to be dealt with as well.
The Silva didn't know of anyone with candy based magic other than Krampus. The whole situation reeked of the long dead dungeon monster.
"If I didn't know better, I would think Krampus was back from the dead and escaped his dungeon."
Description: An orb formed of condensed water particles surrounds June and/or her allies. The orb is large and a slightly opaque shade of light blue. The Protection Orb has [Senior] health. After one post, anyone inside the shield begins is healed of injuries up to [Senior] level. This is reduced by one rank per person healed. Allies inside the shield regenerate [15 Mana] per post. Those that physically attack this shield suffer [Intermediate] damage from water being forced into their lungs through their mouth and nose.

The explosion of more candycane raining from the skies, bombarding her barriers that assaulted the candy back in question filled the air. But she played off her strength perfectly. Her defensive power not only defending from the massive assault but also protecting it from the residual damage of Bengal's own attacks. The chunks of the giant falling to rain to the stone and buildings weren't something that would have been unnoticeable after all.
Bengal shifted his grip on the blade, glancing over it once as it continued to hum irregularly. Grunting and walking back toward his love he had to agree with her statement. "I don't sense any unusual ki nearby, though. If they're summoning and controling this thing their range is tremendous. As well..." his gaze shifted toward the massive body.
"A normal golem would disperse into mana by now after defeat. But it's lingering. Like a mana beast." His eyes narrowed slightly, scratching the back of his head. Clearly bemused by the oddity. Her next words, however, caused the large man to nod once in agreement and lift the blade upward. It continued to thrum and hum, black miasma as the coal-scent flooded the air around them.
"The sword is reacting too much. Maybe it senses it's ghost is nearby?" As he mused this, he flipped the blade before sliding it into the sheath at his side. Eyes narrowing slightly as he watched the various faces dash about around them. Specifically noting the face of one Azure Deer that was waving his hands and directing the others. The highest ranking then? Bengal would lift a hand in greeting to get his attention.
"Let's ask if someone else has noticed anything. Ki is limited, and they're bound to have a few sensory mages." Bengal explained simply as he looked down to her. Before the man could arrive, he leaned down and kissed her once softly. A slight smile forming on his lips, knowing full well she'd likely be a bit flustered. "Well done, Flower." he murmured simply, clearly proud of her fast thinking and reaction using the barriers. A teasing smile formed. "If a bit cocky," the creature had almost broken them after all. But she'd truly done well.
She'd made tremendous strides since that first job he'd taken as her bodyguard.

June's nose crinkled at the scent emanating from Bengal's sword. The weapon's origins were grotesque enough, but now it was pulsing and emanating the stink of coal much like Krampus had.
"The ghost of Krampus past, you say?" she murmured pensively in response to the lightning mage's theory.
The short Silva rubbed her chin in thought while she turned over the possibility in her mind. Could that old grump's soul have returned somehow to cause problems today? June wouldn't have thought such a thing was possible but between the beasts resembling the ones she and Bengal had encountered in Krampus' dungeon and the sword made from the monster's spine reacting, there weren't many other possibilities that made sense to her.
The giant candy cane golem had fallen to its knees, but not fallen apart just as Bengal said. June's frown deepened.
"Krampus didn't use candy canes, he used coal. Then again many things changed with the Shattering. You're right, we should ask someone who can sense what's going on."
Leaving the defense creation spells in place (she didn't trust the downed golem not to get back up and start thrashing again) , June turned and began walking in the direction she had seen some Magic Knights moving as they escorted civilians from the area.
Two Azure deer were running towards the scene. June flagged them down.
"Do either of you use sensory magic?" the Silver Eagle asked them.
At first, they looked past her, preparing to go around the noblewoman to join the fight against the golem. They hadn't made it two steps before realizing the creature was downed and had stopped smashing buildings for the time being.
"If you're done gawking, the golem has been defeated but is still corporeal not unlike a mana beast." June's annoyed tone interrupted whatever thoughts they might have been having.
They turned to face the short noblewoman once more.
"I won't comment on your manners, or lack thereof for the time being," the Silva told them, "but if you disrespect me again I will ensure your captain knows that you are incapable of cooperating with knights from other squads. Now, could one of you answer my question? It's vital to getting rid of that thing that someone is able to determine whether someone or something that could have summoned that monster is in the area."
As her words sank in, the pair of Azure Deer realized why she had stopped them to begin with.
The woman had the sense to mutter an apology before saying, "I can use sensory magic. I haven't sensed any unusual mana in the area except that golem."
June nodded. "Would you mind taking a closer look?"
The man opened his mouth but June cut him off.
"Humor me. It's the least you could do after all."
The woman set a hand on the male Magic Knight's shoulder to calm him before he could mouth off, provoked by June's attitude. There were more important things at hand than a Silva's snobbery.
"I don't sense anything."
"Highly irregular," June grumbled, annoyed. What use was a sensory mage if they couldn't sense things?
Post by Satori Ryuutei on Dec 15, 2020 20:20:40 GMT -5
June's attitude was adorable as always, but he did wish she'd learn to be a bit more polite. It really did get you your way far more often then not after all. Shrugging, he wandered forward and listened to the conversation between June and the pair. The male's demeanor softened a bit as he watched Bengal flip the blade and sheath it, casting a shadow over the entire trio from behind the Silva. Though it didn't appear he was needed. June's method was handling it, he just helped shut the male up a bit thanks to his appearance.
"Well then," Bengal mused, glancing down at the woman. "A different question. Did you sense this creature approaching? Were there any warnings signs at all from the barrier squad?" The question from a different angle caused the woman to blink and frown, clearly the sensory she lifted a hand quietly. A silent request for a moment that made him nod. Reaching out telepathically to someone, her frown deepened before shaking her head.
"No. The barrier squad has had no disturbances at all," she murmured in confusion, causing Bengal to grunt in his chest. Turning his gaze from her toward the male whom appeared to have quieted, but was still giving June looks of distaste.
"Then the town needs to remain evacuated. That means whatever summoned this is still here and is of too high a level of mastery to be detected by a normal sensor, my ki, or a barrier." Bengal's shoulders lifted in a shrug. "We'll have to rely on our normal senses and wait for them to act again." With this he turned and waved them both off. They had their own jobs to do, and now they knew what was going on. They seemed a bit ruffled by being dismissed so easily but Bengal didn't care. Focusing on June.
"Can you fly us up, Flower? Well have a better view, and be able to at least watch the barrier for any ripples that form from the interaction it has with the summoner escaping. Assuming this wasn't one big distraction--" Bengal paused, eyes narrowing as his head turned toward the town center.
"Thirteen people just died in the town center," Bengal murmured suddenly before electricity spread across his body as well as her own. Spinning on his heel without a further word and launching himself forward in a blur of movement. Leaping from one building to the next as his jaw set. He still didn't sense a ki signature from the town center. So it was able to suppress its ki? Or... did it not truly have any life force at all? What was going on?

The answers to Bengal's questions were even more displeasing than the Deers' answers to her own questions. What good were sensory mages for if they couldn't detect disturbances this large? June gave the pair a disappointed look before turning and walking away from them with Bengal. The relatively short-tempered Silva resisted the urge to dump water on the Azure Deers for their lack of respect, but knew doing so would only earn her Bengal's ire.
"Of course," she replied to his request.
However, by the time June summoned River Step, Bengal had already announced the death of several people and run off ahead of her.
"I knew this wasn't the end of it," the short Magic Knight grumbled, "useless deers."
The Silver Eagle looked over her shoulder toward the candy cane golem to see if it was still in one piece. She wasn't fond of the idea of trusting that thing to the hands of the Azure Deers. The peppermint monster had crumbled in the time it took her and Bengal to question the other Magic Knights on the scene. Large chunks of candy cane rubble were strewn throughout the snow. It looked as though someone's candy making shop had exploded.
June allowed the Protection Orbs she had been maintaining to fade from existence now that the major threat was gone. Even if she didn't trust the knights she had just met or their squad mates to prevent further damage, the short noblewoman couldn't afford to maintain multiple senior level spells at a distance while supporting Bengal in the fight against whatever had killed over a dozen people.
River Step flowed quickly along the ground, carrying June in the direction that her fiancé had taken earlier. Her sensory skills were nearly nonexistent, but the noblewoman wasn't worried about being able to find Bengal. His fighting style was loud and flashy enough that she would be able to see it from a distance.
Remembering the tall lightning mage's words from before, June guided her transport spell up the side of a building before continuing to ride it across the rooftops. She squinted and held up a hand to shield her eyes from the wind while she sought out the bright crackling light of Bengal's lightning cloak.
As she sailed above the heads of the remaining knights and guards that were headed in the same direction Bengal had gone, June left behind the distinct scent of ozone from the mixture of lightning and water magic.
