"Everything is theoretically impossible, until it is done!"
With winter coming there were plenty of people who needed help. It might be hunting becoming scarce or a family member who has become sick and they need someone to trek through the snow to deliver some medicine. Such jobs were pretty common as the weather turned foul and people in general just needed the extra help. It was doubly so in areas outside the Noble Region where times could get a bit rougher and people couldn't as easily lean on wealth or connections to make up for any misfortune that might occur. That was why Frankie found himself just outside Nairn this day. As a researcher without the benefit of grants or public funding the mad mage often had to take periodic breaks in his experiments to perform missions or find local work that could help supplement his income. When he wasn't on assignment from the Green Mantis town notice boards were a great way to find people willing to pay a little for some extra help. Such a notice had pointed him to a struggling father who had found himself lacking some much needed wood for the upcoming winter nights. Beyond the job and the pay Frankie didn't really pay much attention. He gathered it had something to do with a sick child that the father needed to stay home and take care of and that was why they couldn't head in the forest to do some lumbering themselves. Didn't matter much to him, there was a job and it paid.
Setting out early Frankie left the town proper and made his way to the neighboring forests not too far from the area. As a central location in the region Nairn was decently close to just about any resource or town you might need to get to while within the Common Region. So, it hadn't taken Frankie long marching in one direction before he had found a suitable forest for him to do his work. Before heading deep into the woods Frankie channeled his mana and shouted aloud, "Earthen Raptor!" At his command his grimoire spilled forth Carbon Matter as it pooled in four areas before quickly forming into giant eagles. The large six meter eagles all turned to him expectantly. With a small mental command one lowered itself so that Frankie could easily mount it. To the others he made a mental command that had them take off into the sky and cut deftly through the canopy to fly deeper into the forest. As they flew they relayed basic information back to him. Things like if they spotted humans or large predators, basically helping him to avoid anyone or anything that might disturb him while he worked.
After a few minutes of flying Stein finally found a suitable area to set down. By all reports from his golems there shouldn't be anything for some distance in any direction from him and there were a number of fallen trees in this that they could probably get everything they could need from this one spot without having to move again. A mental urge had his ex-mount taking off so that each raptor could fly monitor the area at a different cardinal point. When he was ready he would call them back again. For now though he needed to get busy chopping some of this dead wood into something they could actually haul back to Nairn. Of course, he wasn't about to do the physical labor. As an intellectual that sort of work just wasn't really in his wheelhouse.
"Servants of Creation!" Frankie shouted the words as once more his grimoire summoned Carbon Matter before constructing it into the shape of five apes. Each ape then proceeded to line up before Frankie where he handed each one an axe and then mentally commanded them to get to work. His golems weren't exactly built for sophisticated work, but thankfully this wasn't really complicated stuff. Each found fallen trees where they would slash away with their axes until they had more suitable pieces of firewood. Once they had cut things down to size they would move them into piles near where Frankie was relaxing. Frankie while all this was going on was reading from a book he had brought with him. The book was actually one he had secretly procured from a black merchant shop not that long ago. It detailed to some rather dark experiments on dungeons and how one might be able to manipulate them or even potentially construct them. As a Green Mantis his contemporaries could look past things like the book, but it still wasn't smart to flaunt its existence. So, since he was going to be out in the middle of nowhere anyway it felt like the appropriate time to read. With his raptors on over watch there was very little chance on anyone catching him out here reading forbidden tomes.
An hour of reading later and a glance up from his book informed him that his apes had chopped up more than enough firewood for the job. Some telepathic communication had his eagles flying back to his location where each set down in a row. Frankie then took out some large sacks he had procured while in town and managed to strap one on to each raptor. Having done as much physical labor as he would want he had his apes proceed to load each sack with all the firewood they had been preparing. Once that was done he dismissed the mana he had been using to keep the apes sustained and they fell away into shapeless Carbon that would become literal dust in the wind. Mounting himself on the same eagle he had ridden earlier the group of golems would fly all the way back to town where they would eventually land in front of the father's home. There was a bit of a commotion with Frankie leading several large golems flying into town, but thankfully he was wearing his Magic Knight mantle and that seemed to calm some people down. At least, they were probably going to reserve their complaints until after he left. Without his apes it was unfortunately up to Frankie to remove and drag the sacks over to a designated shed that the father had built to hold firewood in the winter. Thankfully, the father had come out to see what the commotion was and upon seeing Frankie had offered to help that much at least. Once all the wood was away the father thanked Frankie profusely. To be honest the mad mage tuned the man out again. Pretty sure there was talk about their family not freezing to death or some such thing. Whatever, he said it resulted in Frankie getting his promised pay! Having gotten what he came for Frankie bid the father farewell, dismissed all, but one of the eagles and set out. Perhaps he would stop back at the forest and read a bit more, there was still some daylight left after all. Plenty of light to read by!
