Roc Lily had been caught. After two straight weeks of not participating in a single mission within the Green Mantises, captain 'Hannibal' had finally forced the young man to partake in an assignment or walk away from the magic knight organization. His goal had just been to collect his paychecks and not risk his neck on any missions. Instead, he'd been coupled with some other magic knight to patrol the streets of Kikka. Roc could only hope his partner wasn't very serious about this work. An afternoon window shopping through the markets sounded a lot better than policing them.
Even worse was the idea that Roc was recognized. In his younger days, Roc was the exact type of thief against which he was tasked to protect. It felt ironic that his first job in this new life would be as somebody on the other side of the law.
A more calm corner of the market alleys and streets was meant to be the mission's rendezvous point. It was an exemplary morning for Kikka, with just enough sunshine and heat to have people eager to seize the day, while tired enough to duck into the myriad shops and tents operating at max capacity. In his appraisal of the situation, Roc caught sight of himself in the broad window of a quaint cafe. He looked just like the thief that roamed these streets only a few years before. The only difference was a cloak of green. To even accuse Roc of being that same delinquent would be unthinkable.
Reflecting on his reflection, Roc caught sight of a distraction. Behind the magic knight, an oblivious older man was operating a fragrant little machine. The sound and smell of his popcorn was attracting a lively group of young women, happy for the treat before they began their shopping spree. In taking their orders, he was missing a pair of young kids robbing him of his sales. One of the kids was playing interference, begging the old man and the girls for a serving of popcorn himself, while the other plucked coins from a vulnerable little tray. The only thing their teamwork was missing was a lookout, or they might've seen a magic knight standing across the street.
Roc knew a profit when he saw it, and walked from the cafe towards an alley behind the popcorn machine. His lucky guess turned up correct, and the two kids reconvened in the shadows of the alley, looking behind them and giggling like idiots.
"Not bad, kiddos" Roc commented, appearing before them with a smile that replaced their own. "How much did you manage to get?"
"It's just some popcorn, magic knight, sir," one of the kids tried to fib.
Uninterested in playing detective, Roc cut to the chase, and sliced at the pockets of the young thief with his chakram. Spilling onto the ground were his stolen coins. The kids were frozen, awaiting their punishment from the armed magic knight.
"Don't worry," Roc said, taking from the thief's partner his paper bag, full of salted popcorn. "I take bribes. Now, get! You bookless brats!"
"But... we need this money... for tribute." Something about that last word struck Roc strangely. Just saying it looked like a sin to the little thief, but he shook off the feeling.
"Get!" At his barking, the pair split, not bothering to pick up the coins. Roc took the liberty to do so, counting the Yul. On his slow walk back to the rendezvous point, he slyly dropped only a few of the recovered coins in the popcorn vendor's tray, managing to stay out of sight while he continued to scoops snacks for the newest customers to arrive. Roc inhaled some popcorn, satisfied and in a much better mood than had been only a few minutes prior.
The day started out pretty normal for the Azure Deer Knight. He was in the investigations office looking over some files, before heading off to do another patrol around Kikka. It seemed quite odd to him that he was requested to take another day, and make his way through the streets to patrol. The town also has a Magic Knight base right there near their town, so why did they have to ask someone from a different squad to Patrol. This was, and probably will always be, a weird thing he will be requested to do. One day he will need to go over to that base to see if he could find out himself on why they can’t patrol. That day will only come whenever he rises a little more in his rankings. If he were to just bust up into another squads base, and being a lower ranked knight, it would not go over well with their Captain. Their Captain was one of the strongest Captains that served in the Magic Knight Order. Naxel didn’t really know much about him, but knew enough to where he could recognize who he was. Maybe he would also meet that man as well one day. Who knows what the world will bring each day that goes by. For the past few days he has managed to meet quite a few new people. One was a member of the Green Mantis, and another a Black Bull. Today’s mission he was paired up with another Magic Knight. Who that person was will be a mystery for now. If it was another one actually knew they would of contacted him before hand. That much he has learned by now.
So, without due, Naxel rose up out of his desk chair, and grabbed his Mantle off the back of that chair. It was going to take a little time for him to make it over towards Kikka. Instead of requesting the Squads Spatial mage to send him over he was going to get himself there this time. Which he got himself there the last time as well. Either way he was going to use his Shadow Chariot to fly over the Kingdom to get himself to that town. So, he was going to do just that. Naxel made his way into the main area of the Squad base, and out the front door. Along the way out he would wave to a few of the members that he would see on the daily. Then, once outside, he would throw out his right arm outwards. The item on his wrist would begin to glow with a bluish black mana. In the palm of his hand would start forming a ball of mana of those colors as well. Once the ball was big enough Naxel would throw it out in front of him to allow the ball of mana to take form. It spun around for a few seconds, and then began to expand bigger. As it expanded it would gradually take its shape as a shadowy medieval chariot. This was an item that he has always found amazing ever since he obtained it. Plus, he was able to make some adjustments to it not that long ago. Before it was very slow, but now it will fly him a bit more faster than before. Naxel would then hop onto the transportation, and fly off in the direction of where Kikka was located.
The ride to the town didn’t take as long as Naxel thought it would take. He wasn’t exaggerating when the adjustments to his item made his flying a bit faster. If he hasn’t of made the adjustments he did then he would still be somewhere over Kiten still. Now he was just flying over Kikka to search for the person he was assigned this mission with. Since the Purple Orcas wasn’t doing this mission, despite being in their own town, it would be a little bit easier with locating this person. All he had to do was look for a person with a magic knight mantle over their shoulders. I am sure if he didn’t see them then they would see him flying over head. Since there were already some heads turning up at the sight of something flying through the sky. Maybe with the sight of a Magic Knight flying over head would make some people behave today. Knowing his luck though that wouldn’t really happen at all. Anyway, Naxel came over a street where he could see a good bit of people walking up and down. He would fly for a few moments before spotting someone with a green looking mantle over their shoulders. “Another Green Mantis? This is interesting. You went from never seeing one to seeing nothing but them. I wonder if its because of that run in with Artemis that day? The world may never know.” Saying all that to himself before declining down towards the street. Then, once was close enough, he would jump off of the chariot to land on top of the ground. Doing so would cause his chariot to disappear into the wind. Naxel would look over at the Green Mantis member with a smile on his face. “Are you the one I am suppose to be patrolling with today?” Closing his eyes afterwards as well as keeping his smile there.
Roc was still munching on popcorn and taking in the pleasant market day when a grandiose chariot descended upon the busy city street. This magic knight didn't seem to care too much about making a show of his arrival. Some of the local passers by seemed star struck by the Azure Deer mantle, waving and greeting him politely. The knight looked to Roc like a sort of walking contradiction. His clothes were nice and colorful, but simple and not flashy. His hair was messy and unkempt, but no part of him was dirty or out of place. His eyes were red and almost scary to look at, but his voice and way of speaking were kind.
"Roc Lily, a pleasure, I'm sure," the mantis said, nodding his head and offering the bag of popcorn. There was no need to make an enemy out of this guy. Roc just needed to get a read on him to figure out how to best navigate their partnership. It was just a shame that this guy had actually shown. Roc was starting to have a fine time people watching and eating his salty breakfast. Roc did little to hide that dissatisfaction on his face, but chose not to make it clear.
"I've never really done any patrolling business myself, so feel free to take the lead," Roc said. This was a half truth. Roc surely intended for this magic knight to take the lead on this mission. It was untrue, however, that he was unfamiliar with how a magic knight patrol worked. Since his youth, Roc had studied routes magic knights took through different cities, all the for the sake of avoiding them. Not only did he know how to run a standard patrol, but he knew how to do it so he'd actually catch the criminals he was assigned to catch. He'd long pondered on how to catch and how to not catch criminals in trying to elude the very faction he now served. Catching criminals simply wasn't of interest to him.
voiding conflict and ending this mission without an incidents was his goal. Not every interaction with a criminal would be as civil as those boys with the popcorn vendor. They wouldn't be as simple either. Kikka wasn't a town he frequently worked in during his younger criminal days, but it probably worked similarly to merchant streets in the outer bounds of the Clover Kingdom. The patterns were all the same. The most predictable parts of it all were the magic knights themselves. Their mantles shined like beacons or warning flares to the criminals in the area. They told the criminals to wait. To wait until the bulwark between real people and 'bad' people had left. Now Roc now longer lived one the wrong side of that barrier. He was the barrier.
It was a bizarre feeling. He had joined the Green Mantises for a reason that probably wildly differed from most people's intentions. He felt like an impostor. Roc still felt uncomfortable, like this other magic knight would uncover his deception and throw him back into the wild world from which Roc had escaped.
The Green Mantis member responded to Naxels question by giving their name, Roc Lily. It was a very interesting name as Naxel couldn’t really tell if that was their full name, or just a nickname. it didn’t really put any worry on the Noble. The two were bound to get to know each other a little better once the mission gets started. Naxel would then notice that Roc had offered some popcorn after introducing themselves. Stars started to appear as his eyes whenever that popcorn smell hit his nostrils. It smelt like heaven in whatever container it was within. So Naxel reached his hand over to take a couple of corns to throw inside his mouth. Once they hit his tongue it just tasted a lot better than what he remembered it being. There was a popcorn stand not far from him, and it made him wonder how a street vendor made such good pop corn. For now it was going to be a mystery. Right now he, and roc, needed to go ahead and get this patrol going. Though, Naxel heard Roc speak up to say for the Azure Deer to take point on this mission. This just brought up some weird kind of suspicion when they words registered in his mind. He doesn’t know why it appeared, but it might been due to the mantle on his shoulders. Naxel knew what kind of squad the Green Mantis were. But, thanks to his recent run in with Artemis, his full worry with them disappeared. There was still a little bit of suspicion he had for that squad, due to the Azure Deer probably busted half of them before joining the squad.
Anyway, Naxel gave his new partner a nod in agreement with Roc. Afterwards, he would begin walking his way in the direction of where the street markets were. The last time Naxel patrolled this area he wound up catching some thugs not too far from here. It was still a possibility for more people to try and rob the same places, but unlikely in his eyes. So, he began walking down the street. While walking he would throw his arm forwards to signal Roc to follow. With the space in between the two areas were kind of great it would be a good opportunity to get to know Roc. Naxel looked over towards Roc, in hopes he followed, with a gentle look on his face. “So Roc lily was it? My name is Naxel, Naxel Blake. I am an Intermediate 5th Class Magic Knight who Works as an investigator with the Azure Deer.” Saying all of that last part with only one take of air. “Boy that was a mouth full to say.” Giving off a little laugh once those words left his mouth. It wasn’t uncommon for the Azure Dee Knight to give off a lot of information in one go. This is just due to having to give briefings, and such, to members around his Rank. That is usually what happens whenever you go with an occupation, within a squad, that you had no idea the details of it before hand. But Naxel gave his partner a little time to respond to respond to the statement he gave. He would then go on to think of something to try and pass the time along. “So, How what made you decide to become a Magic Knight?” Saying with a kind of held back tone to it. The question seemed a little personal once it came out. Sadly, the question was already asked, and he hoped that his partner didn’t take offense to it.
Roc Lily was surprisingly amused by the guy's reaction the popcorn. Between the flashy chariot and the serious questions, the guy seemed to transform into somebody else with the offering of a little snack. Roc would happily indulge his tooth for the snacks. As his partner for the day continued through the streets, Roc would follow close behind. The Azure Deer would walk straightforward through the streets, and this too was something new for Roc. He'd been conditioned since he was a kid to slink and sneak through shadows or within crowds, but this magic knight seemed exemplary in his role. He didn't follow anybody's path or hesitate in leading the way for Roc. It was impressive in its own way. There was a certain boldness to their little walk that was totally unknown to Roc. This too was a lesson for the new Green Mantis. If he was going to commit to this life, then he'd have to learn his role well, even if it was a little chafing.
Not long after they began walking did Naxel introduce himself to Roc. 'Intermediate' and 'investigator' both struck him as very high class terms for a magic knight. This guy was much higher on the totem pole that Roc himself. The information dump was welcome. Roc didn't much know about the formalities of collaborating with other knights, especially those outside his rough and informal squad. "I'm a junior knight, fifth class," Roc added, wanting to reciprocate the information he'd received from Naxel. "What exactly does an investigator do? That different from a normal knight?"
As far as Roc knew, no such role existed within the Green Mantis squad. He theorized that it was some certain role given to members of the Azure Deer squad. Roc didn't care too much about the specifics of the answer, but it felt to walk with the stranger without saying something. Roc always felt more at ease when he knew with whom he worked. In his past life as a criminal, Roc wouldn't do business with any strangers, or anybody that he felt was being too mysterious with their identity. The personal rule helped maintain tight groups and effective coordination as long as he prevented the group from getting too social.
Despite Roc's intentions for getting to know Naxel, he wasn't expecting such a personal question. Roc's own answer to his question wasn't especially attractive. He'd only explained it aloud once, and it hadn't really curried him any favor with the squad made. He tried to invent something that melded fact with fiction to keep the truth at arm's length. This Naxel seemed like a straightforward character. Even if he'd worked with Green Mantises in the past, that didn't mean Roc wanted him intimately aware of his storied history with the law.
"Well, when I first got my grimoire, I was unclear about how I should use it best," that was the truth, "to help people, I mean," that was a lie. "There was a real fearsome criminal in the parts where I grew up, over in the Forsaken region," this too was true, the criminal was Roc's boss for a short time. "Some magic knight team found his hideout, and they raised all kinds of hell to bring him in," Roc was one of the few that had fought against the knights before getting away from the chaos. "The magic knights were free to use their magic to whatever extent they wanted, and they were awarded for it," the destruction they'd caused had been extensive, and no punishment was administered against the knights in question. "It seemed like the magic knights was the best place to spread my magic and express it fully," and live a life sheltered by the protections offered to a magic knight.
Roc thought over his explanation and felt satisfied with its credibility. It was closer to the truth than he'd anticipated, despite omitting some very glaring details. "What's your story then, Blake?" he'd ask in a hurry. Roc was careful to move his focus away from any strangeness in his own story and back onto Naxel's own history.
While they continued down the street, Roc had began asking and answering questions. He first replied back to Naxel with the rank that he held within the Magic Knight Order. The guy said that he was a Junior 5th Class which meant that he was a bottom rank. That didn’t matter much to Naxel, because he always done his best to treat everyone equally. Just because he was a lower rank doesn’t mean that he is any less of a person in Naxels’ eyes. One thing that he really looks for in someone is their personality. Someone who shows respect to others, and gives off helpful vibes, is someone that the Noble will look at equally every single day. Then, Naxel would hear the guy go on to explain his backstory some. From what Naxel understood was that he was a young person from the forsaken region, and didn’t have the best of life when growing up. Coming from a part of the kingdom that was infested with criminal activity isn’t really a place for young people to grow up. Most cases that the Azure Deer has seen were where they wound up growing up to be criminals themselves. Luckily Roc managed to make it out of that area, and seemed to wanna do good with his life. If this boy really did come from a criminal based area then it was a big risk for him to join the Knights. Hopefully those criminals won’t try to cause him harm or trouble for being a Knight. Though, he does have Artemis as a higher ranking member within his squad. Naxel was sure that she wouldn’t let anything horrible come to her members. She seemed to be kind of like Captain Willow in a way. Caring. Which is always great to have someone that cares for them in their life.
After the boy was finished, he would go on to ask Naxel about his history. His eyes grew find of big while letting out a puff of air. It was more than likely obvious that Naxel was a Noble himself. He dressed very well, looks cleaned up for the most part, and even came in flying on a cool looking chariot. So, he wasn’t able to lie about having a horrible life. Some people, that he knows, did actually come from a horrible past that appears like him. In his case, it would be very difficult to lie about anything within his life. “Well, I am from the Noble Blake family. I grew up with two amazing partners. My father wasn’t around all that much when I was growing up, but did came back fully when I was around nine i think? But, there isn’t really anything special about my background. I cam from a very wealthy family with a privileged life.” Saying to Roc with a neutral look on his face. “Though, I wasn’t like other normal Noble children. The way I was raised didn’t allow for me to be as cruel as most Nobles within this Kingdom. Instead, I stood up for most of those who couldn’t stand up for themselves. A lot of commoner children were always bullied around my area. It always bothered me whenever that happened, so I did what I had to do to stop it. There were a lot of being beat up and beating others up. Never a constant lose or win. I did get my point across eventually I feel like.” It wasn’t all that had happened within his life. There was still the Klaus ordeal, family drama, and what not. Naxel didn’t really know this guy all that well to really give out too much detail. The Green Mantis squad did worry him a good bit, but they were still a Magic Knight squad.
Just when Naxel finished his reply there was some screaming that could be heard in front of them. Naxel turned his attention over towards where it came from to notice that there were two guys running towards the two Magic Knights. He wound up letting them run by, and decided to go and check on the woman that screams. When he arrived at her, he noticed that the front of the building had a big hole in the window. From the looks of the place it seemed to be a gems store. Naxel would turn his head over to his partner with a serious look on his face. “Go after them. I need to make sure no one else was injured real quick, and will be right there behind you. You might be a younger mage, but I believe in you!” Saying real quick before jumping through the hole to see if there was anyone inside that was possibly hurt.
Roc was relieved that Naxel didn't pry too much into his life story. There were a few holes he'd have trouble explaining to somebody with the title of 'investigator.' It was satisfying enough to know that he accepted what the Green Mantis said at face value. There was definitely a sort of judgment, or analysis from Naxel, but that didn't bother him much. Being wary of a stranger was normal, even if that stranger was another magic knight. Roc didn't feel obliged to put the other knight at ease. Staying on guard during their patrol, of one another or of their surroundings struck Roc as completely normal.
The Azure Deer's own story sounded some sort of hollow to Roc. It sounded, to Roc, more like a glowing recommendation of someone else. Naxel must have completely abandoned humility if he could so easily talk about saving those less fortunate than himself. Roc himself had been one of those kids that had been less fortunate than the nobles raised in their gilded houses. It never made him feel more at peace when they came off their high horse to deliver some preachy sort of justice to the lower masses. Nothing about what Naxel said spoke to the systemic injustices the Forsaken region faced. It didn't speak to how much wealth had gone into the sort of life that allowed the boy to do whatever he wanted. It didn't speak to the lack of freedom for those less fortunate, those without the resources to fight for themselves. Naxel's bloated story represented a misunderstanding of justice. His heroics didn't produce a net gain for those people he tried to protect. The real injustice is that they were unable to protect themselves. That kind of deep imbalance ran much more steep than some singular acts of protection by one noble.
Roc weighed the idea of unloading this idea on the guy, but decided to just no along to Naxel's story instead. Ultimately, if Roc just tried to 'correct' Naxel, then he'd be dong the same thing as him, and preaching about a real sense of justice without actually doing anything. He elected to build a shallow bridge rather than burn it down. In the end, Roc wasn't responsible for the masses of impoverished that were unable to help themselves. Roc had once been one of them, and no he'd pulled himself up to the magic knights. If he were still a part of those huddled masses, then he'd be receiving a sermon from this guy. As a magic knight, he could speak on equal terms rather than being looked down upon. He had risen above his station to one of verdant green. Naxel Blake might be a good guy, but at the moment, Roc could only see the man and him as coming from places far enough apart to be considered heaven and earth.
Their conversation would wind down following their introductions and leading into their patrols. A pair of men fled the scene of a scream and Roc followed Naxel's lead, investigating the source of the distress call. The destruction of the shop was immense. Taking in the surroundings quickly, Roc found the two men that had passed the two knights, diving around the corner of the block. He was already poised to give chase when Naxel gave the order. To separate was a bad idea, Roc was not a magic knight suited for single combat, but couldn't request to switch places as he'd already begun tending to the scene of the crime. Any further hesitation, and the criminals would be lost to the many annals of Kikka streets.
"You'd better hurry along!" Roc advised, fleeing towards the escaping criminals. He dove around the same corner and began to give chase. With each change in direction, Roc left behind a mark of ash, clearly indicating the direction he'd taken. Naxel would need clear directions if he was to follow along with any success. A closed shop, loosely occupied by discarded, ragged clothes and textiles seemed to be their destination. Laying in wait for Roc were seven criminals, including the two he'd pursued. Waiting for them, sitting atop a few stacked boxes like a junk throne was a seriously disappointed older man.
"We couldn't shake him, lieutenant," one of the thieves confessed between ragged breaths.
"Then, let's just shake him," the sitting lieutenant ordered. His grimoire flew open and the other criminals followed suit. Already odds were grim for Roc.
"King Crypt!" Roc cast his spell as he dove towards one of the thieves, too exhausted to continue fleeing. Around the pair of them formed a mausoleum of ash, isolating the pair.
The thief seemed delighted by the development, and fire began to form around his fingertips. "Bad move, knight!" The shallow attack spell scorched Roc's clothes but was mostly blocked by his hidden armor. In retaliation, Roc threw his chakram weapon, wedging it deep in the man's chest with a spurt of blood. The man stumbled back and Roc made the same move again, throwing the other of his pair of chakram and knocking down the man. Half the gems were now stuck inside his cramped crypt, along with Roc. Now it was just a matter of deciding what to do next.

"A SHADOW IN THE MAKING."
Naxel had dove through the window before he could hear Roc tell him to hurry along. Once he was inside he took a look around to see what all damage was done. Though, from the looks of it, most of the damage that was done was caused by physical damage. There was no mana signatures left behind that could detail that magic was used within the robbery. It wasn’t until he noticed something, of a different color, on the floor next to the counter. Naxel crouched down towards the spot to get a better look at what it was. He reached his arm down to poke it finger on it, and pulled it back to notice that it was drops of blood. Seeing this only confirmed his suspicion that they must not of wanted to use deadly force with this robbery. That doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t be willing to use force if someone chased them down. Thinking of this struck a lightbulb in his mind that he did send his partner, for this mission, to go after these thugs. He was so caught up with this small investigation that it caused him to quickly forget about the thugs that did make a run for it. So, he took no time for hesitance, and jumped back out of the hole in the wall that he came in on. He would then make his way down the street, a good ways, before he noticed a mark of ashes on the ground. It was right next to a corner that he figures is a mark to let him know that his partner went this way. It is either that or a trap that these thugs set. But these guys are just common street thugs in the Azure Deers eyes. There was no way that they would be smart enough to set up a trap right here. Naxel would then have a weird feeling before summoning his grimoire. The pages quickly flipped before stopped on the page of his scythes. “Shadow Creation Magic: Lord Umbras Dual Scythes.” He recited as two orbs of mana appeared out of his book.
The two orbs would stop right in front of the Nobles hands that he had out in front of him. A chain would shoot out of one to attach to another. His hands would then close and squeeze down on the orbs to where the orbs would shoot out in the shape of double bladed scythes. Then, his body would be covered in a shadowy aura causing his body to feel a lot quick than normal. Naxel would then take off down the path that was marked off for him to take. His speed was at 15 meters per second (33 Miles per hour) as he made his way. Then, once he got close, he noticed that a group of peoples mana signature inside a building up ahead. He took a moment to focus, and sensed that his partner was inside of that building. A serious look would appear on his face as he drew closer to this building. When he got there he busted inside with a continuous dash, Once he got right up on the group of thugs he would rear his arms back, and then bring them forwards to send slashes towards two of these thugs. Both strikes could connect to the two causing them to fall towards the ground unconscious. He stopped his movement to past the rest of them. Turning his head back towards them would allow them to see the serious look he had on his face. A few of them would show nervousness on their face, but one had a look as serious as the Noble. Naxel would then sling both of his scythes at another two of the thugs causing them to fall in unconsciousness as well. That only left two, and one that seemed to be the boss of them. Those last two thugs would then begin to dash towards Naxel. As each of the two got closer, Naxel used his scythes to hit each one of them for them to be knocked out unconscious. The last guy stared at Naxel with a serious look to counter his. All of a sudden, he would then attempt to run away from the Azure Deer. This cause confusion with him, but Naxel would sling his right hand scythe at the thug for it to wrap around him. He then pulled the scythe back by the chain, and the thug along with it. Naxel knew that his partner was inside, and would then look over at a building that didn’t seem to match the one they were in. “Roc! It is all clear out here. Come on out.” He scream out before keeping an eye on the ones that he knocked out. Naxel would then make his way out to turn these guys in. The other Knight seemed to be alright based on his mana signature. Maybe another day they would be tasked with another mission again.
