For the first time in what seemed like months, this particular day had allowed Griswold to really sleep in. Usually, he woke up alongside the roosters that started being annoying at the crack of dawn, something he had learned during his several year long stay on a farm in the forsaken region. As a commoner, one often did not have the luxury of sleeping in as every day posed new challenged while being filled with a whole lot of hard work. That was, a whole lot of hard work for those who wished to make a decent living for themselves and not fall into a deep hole of debt and depression. And as one of those same hard working people, the one that had given Gris shelter was always up before everyone else to see to the farmland and everything living on top of it. So whenever he went out, the soon to be magic knight could not just stay behind.
But now that he had actually been able to sleep in, Griswold truly took the most out of it. The way he saw it, he deserved it after all of the trouble he had been forced to go through the other day, just like his body seemed to really need it in order to fully recuperate. One did not often find themselves in a situation where they had to fend of spirits fueled by malice, needed to worry about people that had made their intentions known by trying to stab, or rather shoot him in the back with a crossbow, all while needing to get through the whole ordeal in order to save the family of a little girl that had been stowed away in an ancient elven crypt. While it was clearly not his first mission, the fact that he had undertaken this one alone meant that there was a lot more riding on it than just the lives of the people involved. Even if the lives of those people were the most important thing, there was also the issue of Griswold himself.
By taking on this kind of mission, he had more or less tossed himself into the deep end, going without any backup into a situation that could have gotten people killed in the case of his failure. At the time of taking on the mission itself however, he had not even once considered the idea that he could try calling out to the magic knights of the Crimson Lion squad. But the more he pondered on the matter, he knew that having to fly all the way back to the royal capital, request help, only to return to Kiten and the elven ruins nearby. Well, chances were that the people he had now managed to save might not have been alive by the time he returned. He had chosen to take swift action, and it had paid off to the point where he had managed to not only return the entire family of humans to the very Inn in which he himself had spent the night, but had also allowed him to free an ancient family of elves from the curse of undeath that plagued them.
Hopping out of bed and getting dressed, as per usual, he did not wear any kind of magic knight attire, feeling that he could move freely among the populace much more easily if they did not feel like they needed to be at their best behavior. That was what often happened when people felt watched, when they could feel the figurative breath of authority down their necks. So, while looking like one might expect your average commoner to look, aside from the elven ears, Griswold left the Inn for a while and headed into town. His sole reason for sticking around was simple, to make sure the family he had retrieved would get the time they needed to heal up, feel better and be able to start their journey back home to wherever it was that they had come from. For the time being, the elven knight had the feeling that he left them in good hands with the town guards, allowing him to head out for a bit.
As for what Griswold needed right now, that much was simple. He wanted to get some fresh air, as well as scout the area for a bit as something just did not sit right with him at all. Even though the two grave robbers that had set everything bad that happened the other day into motion with their greed had both ended up killing by the same spirits they had unleashed, there was something about what they had said prior to their deaths that bothered him, this being the fact that they had supposedly already found buyers for the white gold staff. With the buyers being on the way already, it was only a matter of time before they would get to Kiten, if they weren’t already here right now. That said, he had been told that they had a man inside the town that acted as a broker, arranging their deals and even going as far as paying certain members of the guard to look the other way while their business transactions went down.
Walking out of the fortress-like town through the front gate, he looked about as unassuming as ever as he just walked around, letting his ears do the work. One of the benefits of having heightened, finely tuned senses was that it allowed him to pick up on conversations from quite a while away without actually creating the impression that he was to be listening in on someone. In so doing, he listened in on bits and pieces of conversations of everyone that entered into town this way, given they were not entering alone, as most people who went anywhere on their own did not have entire conversations with themselves. If this method of doings things did not pay off, the next thing he would do would be to hop on his broom and make his way over to the elven ruins to see if maybe they had been told to meet them there. For the moment though, walking around the front gate area would have to do.
