At this point, Echo’s outburst was to be expected, though he did not give it much heed. The sound he made when he slammed into a wall was much sweeter than the sound of any word that existed within his vocabulary, so he could excuse being called a jackass and whatever other insult the guy had thrown at him in the previous rooms. It was something he had been needing to get out of his system for quite some time now, for well over a month to be exact, and it truly felt good. People often claimed stupid things like how revenge settled nothing and would not make someone feel any better, or how money did not make people happy. It seemed like these were the kinds of words that were spoken by those who had never actually accomplished either of these sensations, because Griswold was a living testament to the opposite being true.
When he began talking about a whole bunch of things the guy clearly had no idea of or brought up in stark contrast to all of his own actions, Griswold just shook his head a little. Not because he disagreed, but because of the fool the guy was making of himself, speaking of things such as teamwork when the guy had constantly been trying to do the opposite of what Griswold had asked of him or simply dashed ahead at full speed in order to go and do things on his own. Before the good old smack he had given him, these were all things that bothered him greatly, yet having done what he had done made him infinitely more calm. So calm in fact that it allowed him to take a moment and speak to the guy in what was perhaps the most controlled state he had been in for quite some time now.
“You talk about things you have clearly no idea of, and it shows. Now, you’d have no idea of knowing this, but I’ve actually been a magic knight before, a Crimson Lion to be precise. But I stepped down because I wanted to be stationed somewhere outside of the royal capital, far from the noble realm because me and nobility tend to not blend all too well.”
Sharing a little bit of information that those who had been around him up until this point were either aware of by having seen him in his lion days and later as a roaming mercenary, or because they had actually been part of the transition from one into the other, he figured it might shed some light on some of the things Echo had been spouting up until now. Simply said, there was nothing the guy could tell him about the do’s and don’ts of being a magic knight that Griswold was not already aware of, so he might as well stop trying to rattle it up. It wouldn’t faze him in the slightest. That said however, he was not done just yet.
“So instead of prattling on about teamwork, you should take a page out of your own diary and have a good long read. Because trying to blow a hole into a wall when someone is requesting your help for a puzzle, or darting ahead and leaving members of your team behind like an angry little boy is the opposite of “teamwork”. But I don’t expect you to understand as you’ve proven to be in possession of zero self-reflection.”
Feeling rather good about himself in allowing himself to say these things, especially now that the guy was beaten up to the point where he would do well not to dart off on his own again, Griswold had intended to bring up the issue of stabbing himself through the shoulder with his own blade. Feeling like that would be stacking things on too heavily, he had decided to keep that much for himself for now. After all, it seemed like Echo still had a few things to say to him. Sounding rather high and mighty, as well as incredibly full of himself when he did so, Griswold took a moment to hear him out and ponder on his words. Bringing up how Griswold was someone he had started to respect a bit solely because it drove him to become stronger, knowing that Griswold was as strong as he was, part of him did not exactly believe this to be true.
So far, his actions hadn’t exactly been those of someone who respected the person that he was with, but that was something Griswold would keep to himself for now as there was still more coming. One such thing being the fact that Griswold was apparently not someone who had been “blessed by mana”, which seemed odd. Throughout his life, he had always been told the opposite due to his elven blood, meaning it was likely that Echo had either not noticed this about him, or that he was simply full of crap. Continuing about how him hitting Echo would knock “points off of his grade”, it was a price he was entirely willing to pay since it meant knocking the guy down a few pegs. The sad part about it was the fact that he was so incredibly full of himself, that half of what had happened so far seemed to have either not registered with him, or had been twisted and warped in his mind to fit his own narrative.
What that told Griswold was that the guy was delusional and perhaps even deranged, as no sane person would stick their own blade through their shoulder just to spite someone, or believe that they were truly without fault. But of all of the things he said, the thing that Griswold truly wished to ponder on for a moment was his question about what he was going to do once he had become a magic knight, and whether or not he believed that his purpose was greater than that of Echo. While it took him a moment to fully take in all of the things he had said, coming up with the right answer was surprisingly easy for him, as he knew exactly what to tell the guy in a manner that was both true and likely to piss him off even more than he already was.
“To put it in simple terms: Yes. For as long as I’ve known you, you’ve only shown to be after things that serve you and only you. Whether it means abandoning people in the middle of danger so you can try and claim a treasure for yourself, behaving in this cringingly childish way you’ve demonstrating during these trials, as well as your utter refusal at accepting your own flaws and mistakes and instead pinning them on others is proof of that.”
While it might have sounded like an attempt at making a personal attack, Griswold was merely answering the questions posed by Echo in the most direct way possible. And direct he was, as there was no point in holding back when it came to things such as these, especially when it had been requested that he answer. So even if most of it seemed unlikely to properly register as it was intended, and would probably not bring about any reason for the guy to want to change his ways in the slightest, he still felt like he needed to answer truthfully in this case. That said though, he hadn’t lied to the guy even once since they had entered the trials, and wasn’t likely going to do so any time soon either. So with the first bit of reasoning out of his way, it was time to explain exactly why Griswold’s purpose was so much greater than Echo’s.
“While I doubt someone like you will ever grasp the meaning of what I’m about to say to you, I still want to tell you why my “purpose” is so much greater than yours. You exist for you, while I exist so others can keep existing and perhaps do so under better conditions at some point in the future. That is my reason for becoming stronger, for striving to be better, and why you being “blessed” means nothing in the face of my own glorious purpose. Though I’ll gladly take you on and show you in a one on one fight once we’re out of here, as that too seems to be part of this exam. Now, lets get a move on.”
Not having ever really thought about it in that way, Griswold believed that wording his goals and aims for the future truly made for a glorious purpose. So as he moved into the room that seemed to be lit up by glowing mushrooms that covered the place in a faint blue light, he imagined they would encounter their next trial soon enough. Hopefully, they were about to get close to the end, because for how much Echo was bleeding, it seemed unlikely that he would accept a healing hand from someone like Griswold, so he wouldn’t even offer. At the end of the day, Griswold understood very well what it meant to be proud of one’s own self, and when standing next to someone they considered to be either a threat, a rival, a respected individual or simply someone they wanted to put down with their own hands, accepting any favors from them was like taking a hit in the groin.
So for now, the guy would just need to feel the pain of his own failures and deal with the fallout of his own actions until he reached the point where all of that bravado would come tumbling down and he would actually ask to be healed, as Griswold knew that Echo knew about his healing capabilities due to their encounter within the tower of quinteps.
TL;DR: Moved to the next room and responded to Echo's inquiries, as well as posing some questions of his own.

❝My light [break]is brighter [break]than the sun!❞
[attr="class","echotemp] Echo had done nothing but listened as Griswold spoke but the words would fall on death ears as Echo did not give a single damn as to what the man was saying at this point. He would however listen when Griswold would begin to tell him why his purpose was more important than Echo’s.. Some of the things the solar mage spoke of were very good reasons to drive someone, however nothing could overcome divine intervention in the eyes of the red head noble. Griswold did what he did to protect the people around him and all that goodie hero stuff, but Echo did what he did because he felt as if he was blessed to change the world. Clearly Echo was no hero, but instead he saw himself as an anti hero. He thought that he was brought into this world to destroy whatever power was stopping the progression of the world and truly having an equal world. [break][break] The two mages would not see eye to eye at all and surely their encounter here would diminish the grades that both of them would receive but Echo could honestly care less. Echo looked at Griswold with the look someone would give an idiot as he thought about the words that the man had said. It made no sense to Echo, why someone like Griswold would believe that he knew anything about Echo after only ever having brief encounters. Sure the things the male had seen did fit the description that he had given, however that still was a bold statement for someone he only met 2 times. Echo knew that he wasn’t selfish at all, nor was he self serving. Echo wanted to make things equal for everyone, however it was very weird in the way he showed his desires. [break][break] As the two unlikely partners were now on the third floor of the dungeon things were most certainly sure to be reaching their end point. Echo looked around still feeling the slight pain in his shoulder and also feeling the slow drip of blood, would feel as though now he needed to reply to the solar mages silly rant saying “Self serving, in need of self reflection? You have some nerve you meat head. We could have squashed this from the beginning and let bygones be bygones. But now you insult me for wanting to try and find a way out of one of the previous rooms without helping you. You insult me saying that your pitiful life means more than the power and purpose that the mana has given me. You even insult me by believing you should even have the honor to fight me. Fuck off, you aren’t even worth my time to fight. I would much rather kill you slowly and watch as the life fades from your body. I’ve never had a thing against commoners but suddenly I feel a bit of what those other nobles be going on about. You are true commoner filth, and if we weren’t being watched I would cut a hole in you where you stand.” [break][break] Echo took a brief pause from his speech due to him hearing a noise coming from within the room. Looking around there would be some stones around the room, each stone with writing upon them. Echo would walk up to further inspect the objects to see that his name along with Griswold’s and more were on them. Echo began to talk out loud to himself saying “Hmm what could these stones possibly mean? Why are these names here? More specifically why is my name here?” Within a few moments of that a rather large rumble could be felt probably throughout the whole dungeon. Echo would draw his wakizashi before losing down at his hip thinking to himself *I can’t even think about trying to dual wield with my arm like this. I don’t know what’s about to happen but hopefully….* As these thoughts were passing his mind he would look up due to the appearance of a very bright light. He would look up almost blinded as he said “What the hell is going on!?” Just as he said this a very large and tall creature would float down from the light. [break][break] Echo examined the creature as it floated downward, taking into account its physical appearance knowing this was most likely an enemy. The creature was at least as tall as Echo and Griswold together plus a little extra on top, and the creature truly had them beat in wingspan and body width. Echo watched as the large creature floated down saying “Well then I guess this is the endgame… no matter I only need my speed and one arm to handle such a large goofy looking creature." With his first speed spell still active he would activate another in order to truly flex his potential. He would take his short sword and charge at the large creature, going for a strike at the beast large ahead that sat a bit of a ways off the ground. Echo would use his speed combined with a jump to propel himself up high enough to reach the head of the beast, before he would stab it in the side of what would and should be its neck. The red head would look at the beast as he came down from his jump but would see that the attack had did nothing but made the thing mad. Echo would immediately retreat back but his sword remained in the neck of the beast before he would begin to think about another possible plan of attack. The large creature would let off a rather loud roar, right before it would rush forwards towards Echo and Griswold.

And that was when it happened, the straw that broke the camel’s back. After having answered the questions he had been asked by the guy, who seemed to hardly listen to most of what he said, he began rambling about himself again. Acting like “Mana” was some sort of divine entity that had chosen him specifically to be the one that would change the world in a way he saw fit, the fact that this guy was actually a delusional lunatic became all the more clear. Especially when he followed up on it by claiming how he had never considered commoners to be bad people, which was not something Griswold actually believed when he heard it, as Echo seemed like the kind of person that believed everyone was beneath him and despised just about anyone that wasn’t him, at which point Griswold began to glow. Stopping in his tracks as he had aimed to make his way into the next room already, he just faced Echo with a highly annoyed look on his face.
Since he normally possessed a rather stoic expression, there was no way the guy would not be able to tell that what he had said had truly managed to piss him off. After they had already had a discussion about how threats were the kind of thing that continued to hover over people after they were made, and would not just have the effect of their words disappear over time, the guy had to go and stack on not one, but two more of them, whereas one was not even solely aimed at him, but included his people too. Continuing on to call both Griswold and commoners filth, and that if it weren’t for the people watching them, that he would cut a hole in him and wait for him to bleed out, it was then that Griswold had to interrupt him. He had heard enough, and there was no way they were going to continue on together and see things through to the end. That bridge had officially been burned to the ground.
“That’s it. We’re done here. In spite of all the crap you tried to pull, the threats you’ve made against me in the past, I actually figured you deserved a shot at becoming a magic knight, though you managed to singlehandedly ruin every bit of credit you had. I don’t care if people are watching or listening to this, though I hope they do, as it should explain why you needed to be taken out of here by medics.”
Instead of letting the guy move past him to get on ahead into the actual room, remaining between Echo and the next room so there would be no way of getting past him without going through him. Even if he were to speed up as fast as he could, the fact that he needed to get past Griswold meant there would be no avoiding his spell. It would in fact mean moving right into it, and given the size of the room, there was really nowhere for him to go even if he tried. It was one of those situations where being boxed in in a relatively small space meant that no amount of speed was going to save you from getting caught up. While Griswold spoke, he would keep his eye on Echo, so as soon as he would even as much as try to make a move, Griswold would prematurely use the spell he had prepared. Having done the math in his head, he knew that his spell had gotten rid of his mana skin, whereas the demons claw had managed to deal some damage, which had only been further amplified by the guy stabbing himself through the shoulder to cause a fair amount of bleeding.
One more hit was all it took to knock the guy out, and with the amount of damage he had already sustained, he wasn’t going to be putting up much of a fight anyway. It was for that reason that Griswold had initially challenged him to a fight once they were out of here, when Echo could have been healed by the people who were looking after the contestants and make it so it would be a fair fight for the both of them. If nothing else, it would allow them to settle some scores and make it so they could duke it out and get it out of their system. But no, the guy had to go and drag the commoners into this, he had to threaten him not once, but twice in the same one-sided monologue, after which he would undoubtedly try and just go about business as usual by continuing the trial of attrition as if nothing was wrong. Just another example of how delusional he really was, as there wasn’t a soul alive that would work with someone who threatened to cut a hole in him and watch him suffer in his final moments. No, this was over.
“I have no doubt that those who watched your actions in here have already deemed you unfit to be a magic knight, what with your constant bellyaching about being here, being “done with magic knights and their crap” as you put it, calling the people you’d be tasked with protecting filth and threatening what would be a fellow magic knight by either cutting a hole into me or killing me slowly and watching my lights go out because you’re too much of a coward to actually fight me like a man in the magic knight spars? To me, that sounds like three strikes, and you know what that means.“
Unless he had made a move to try and attack him or get away prior to Griswold finishing his sentence, it was at that point that he would put a good amount of effort into knocking the guy out completely, which really wouldn’t take much at this point. Up until now, Griswold had been carrying the guy on his back throughout this whole thing, only getting a slight amount of help with things he had already figured out on his own. So to have his people and himself threatened, to behave in the same cowardly manner he had been behaving in up until now because the only thing he was good at was making Griswold’s life significantly more annoying and test his patience to the point where all of it had been chiseled away. Knowing the rules to state that killing and maiming were not allowed, he would do neither, instead aiming solely to deal just enough damage to knock him out and keep him from making more threats and actually wandering out of this trial as a “victor”.
“You’re out…”
Releasing the blast of mana that quickly enveloped the room, the already battered and beaten Echo really had nowhere left to go as the solar spell would approach him. Aimed at striking him with enough force to the point where it would knock him out cold, Griswold imagined that the “maiming” that had been inflicted upon his body had been caused by his own hands and his own weapons, meaning it wouldn’t be the kind of deal he could be blamed for. And while Griswold could try to reason with himself that he was doing this solely to protect the commoners, or to keep a bad seed like Echo from potentially joining the magic knights for whatever purpose that would likely just put anyone that would have to work with him in the field due to his fickle and egocentric nature, those were only part of the reason. The main reason was simple. Griswold had seen enough, he had heard enough, and he knew that the guy deserved all of the bad things he received in life.
Remaining in the room to make sure Echo would have gotten knocked out and guarding the way into the next room like a trained hound, he would move into the next room only once he was sure of two things. One being the fact that Echo had gone down and out, and the other being that he would get the help he needed from one of the observers. If not, he’d at least part ways after healing him to some extent so he wouldn’t suffer from the damage the idiot had inflicted upon himself with his own blade.
TL;DR: Halted in his tracks rather than moving into the next room, made sure Echo couldn't move past him before giving him the business and aiming to knock him out.

Spell used: Name of Spell: Galactic Nucleus: Quasar Elemental Type: Solar Rank & Spell Type: Senior | Attack Creation Range & Speed: 40 meters (AoE) | 40 m/s Mana Cost: 30 mp | 15 mp sustain Stats Effected: +6 to Power Applicable Perks: “Overpowered” Description: A more powerful version of the solar(lunar)burst spell, Galactic Nucleus: Quasar is a burst spell that uses the caster as the epicenter by making their entire body radiate with light before the mana explodes in all directions, moving outward in a 40 meter radius. Initiating in exactly the same manner as Blazar, it allows for a surprise element towards those that are familiar with his spells. Crossing a distance in the blink of an eye, it deals a senior amount of solar damage while knocking those hit by it back for 8 meters + an additional 5 meters for every 10 power the user possesses. Using this spell scorches the earth and leaves somewhat of a crater of roughly five meters deep as the spell itself can destroy most non-magical constructs with ease, cause minor third degree burns and break bones, making a direct hit quite lethal. Using the “ammo” rules, the caster is capable of preventing allies of being hit by the burst. During the day, the spell takes on an orange hue, taking on a silver blue hue after dark.

And with that, it was over. As the spell struck its target and knocked him across the floor, all of the meaningless posturing, the threats and the egotistical spewing from a spoiled child with a god complex had finally been silenced. Had this setting been a different one, things would most likely not have ended with just that. Having only been a magic knight for a few months, and a mercenary for just about the same amount of time, he had seen his fair share of people coming from all walks of life. And while there were always some exceptions, Griswold had managed to become a fair judge of character, especially after he had witnessed a double homicide in his first week as a knight that had left him rather disillusioned with the world. But it had taught him a few things, namely that some people who were already in possession of a dangerous mindset might end up becoming straight up dangerous.
And when he looked at Echo, even in his unconscious state, he felt the same way. Judging by how eager he was to pierce his own shoulder and perhaps cause long term damage to himself just to spite an enemy proved to Griswold that he was an unstable individual at best. At worst, he was a delusional lunatic that had to get dropped into a correctional facility, or get put out of his misery before he could actually hurt anyone, or worse. The way in which he expressed himself as this person who was apparently chosen by some kind of divine being to bring change to the world, believed everything bad that happened was inherently not his fault even if he caused ninety percent of the issues to begin with and went about threatening people in a rather easy to visualize manner was proof enough that he was not right in the head. But none of these things were really a reason to want to get rid of him.
However, the part where he made it clear how he would not fight, but would rather aim to injure someone and just watch them slowly die made Griswold believe that he didn’t just say these things to come across as this really tough guy. But when he threatened an entire group of people that had nothing to do with the situation they were in, that was where Griswold drew the line. If the guy was in any way going to act on his threats, which seemed unlikely because there was no way for him to beat Griswold in an actual fight, the likelier option was that he would instead go after the commoners. And it was for that reason that he lingered for a moment, holding his blade and wondering whether he should take matters into his own hands and literally cut the head off of the snake to potentially save the country a whole lot of trouble. Knowing he would be able to slice it off well before anyone could react, he had no option but to vote against it.
“While I doubt you’ll be able to hear me at this point, I want you to know that I could have taken your head or have you reduced to ash if I wanted to. But the only reason you get to live for now is because, to my knowledge, you’ve yet to actually hurt or kill someone. Know that when you do, I will find you, and I will rectify this issue personally. Now sleep in the dirt for a bit, and know that it is where you belong as you are now. Hopefully, there’ll come a moment where you decide to better yourself, though I doubt that will ever happen.”
And with that, Griswold placed his sword back over his shoulders and locked it into the harness before turning his back on the guy and making his way towards the glowing writing on the wall. As he did so, the door behind him closed, meaning there was no going back now. Not that he wanted to, as he could feel that he was just about done here and could make his way outside as hopefully one of the first people to beat this dungeon. Whether it would make people see him as a capable knight or not for managing to make his way out first, the fact that he had to fight both the entire trial of attrition and even his treacherous dungeon partner should at the very least turn some heads, or so he figured. While he did not doubt for a second that he was most likely going to receive a scolding for taking out his “partner”, he imagined that there might also be those that would actually commend him for not trying to kill him after all the things he had gotten thrown at his head.
But that wasn’t important right now, as he was still inside of this dungeon and needing to find a way out. Believing the best thing to do right now was to quite literally look for the writing on the wall, Griswold made his way over to the glowing writing to find out that they were the names of all of the contestants taking part in the trial of attrition. Looking for the stone that had his name on it, he saw that the one that had Echo’s name on it had stopped glowing, meaning the place and the people running it were already aware of how he would not be able to see things through to the end anymore, which was a good thing. Because for how much he would have wanted to take his head off, the fact that he hadn’t done anything aside from making empty threats meant that he did not deserve to die. Not yet at least.
Believing he would likely get the help he needed, Griswold put it out of his head and reached for the stone that had his name on it. Tracing his fingers along the writing, it reacted to him, causing a bright light to appear. From it, a large figure appeared, putting its feet down on the stone floor and looking at Griswold without showing any kind of emotion. Usually, his enemies gave a certain kind of hostile vibe, but aside from the large posture itself, the being did not really show itself to be all that aggressive. Perhaps it had been sent in the expectation that it was to fight two people, or maybe it simply did not think anything at all. In a way, the creature looked a lot like some kind of golem, even though it was much larger than any he had ever seen up until now. But if it was, that would make getting rid of it that much easier as it explained why it was not showing any hostility. It simply wasn’t really alive.
Reaching for his blade, the being began moving towards him, crossing the distance in just about the same time it took Griswold to actually get his weapon ready. Moving so fast because it was so big, it brought its foot down in an attempt at crushing the mercenary underneath it, though he was not so slow that he could not jump out of the way and cause it to crush the stonework instead. Pointing his sword towards the thing, he would try something he had never tried to do before, which was to utilize the blade in a more elaborate manner. He knew that he could create sharp thorns to shoot towards an enemy in an attempt at binding them and piercing them, though he had never tried to kick it into overdrive. But today was a first for a lot of things, so there was no reason not to give it a go now. Pushing a good amount of mana into his sword, he shot not two thorns, but a total of six that moved from the crystalline blade.
Shooting one into each arm and leg, as well as two into the torso, he could tell that the amount of damage it had done had severely weakened the structure of the being, causing it to become brittle to the point where one solid tug at his blade cause the thorns to pull out. Ripping large chunks out of the massive golem-like being, the whole thing came crumbling down like a house of cards in a hurricane. Retracting the thorns back into the blade, he looked at the shattered creature, which just looked like a pile of rubble now before his eyes switched towards the light on the other side of the room. Wandering over to it and making his way through, it seemed that he was finally back in the outside world again. Noticing that he was the first to have made his way out, he ventured to where the people were who watched as the other contestants went about their own trials. Imagining it would be fun to see what the others had to face, he just sat down and waited for the others to make their way out.
TL;DR: Made sure Echo was down and not dead before going into the next room, triggering his sword 3 times and killing the boss before venturing outside.
