In the northeastern portion of the forsaken realm, many of the people live off of the land. Whether it is from the food they grow by themselves on their farms, the stag and boar they manage to hunt down in the northern forests, somehow, they manage to make it work. Recently, however, there have been reports about something descending from the north that spooks the local wildlife and takes livestock from the local farmlands. While no residents have gone missing, people say that it is only a matter of time before “The Beast” strikes again. This is why they called it in with the magic knight squads, hoping they can settle the matter once and for all.

Maximum Number of Players: 2 [break]Minimum Word Count: 1500 [break]Location: The Forsaken Realm [break]Special Requirements: For starters, you are to discuss with the locals what they have seen, heard and tried to do to keep the beast out. Naturally, none of what they tried helped, and all of their “information” in terms of how the beast might look is based on hearsay. The only bit of useful information they might be able to provide is where the last attack, or rather, livestock theft took place, as there have been no signs of any animals being killed, just disappearing. Go there, look for tracks, and get ready to track it north.

[attr="class","noahtext"]Noah was sitting at a very old-fashioned pub for more than an hour now. Doing missions wasn’t usually stressful, however, finding out that his next mission would be with one of his fellow squad mages shifted his perspective. As he was sipping on the water from a dirty glass, watching the outside, there was still a plenty of time before the original meeting time. The young mage felt a sense of shame, that he came here so early in order to impress someone he knows very little about, but he couldn’t help it. He knew that his own status was rather questionable and therefore he decided to try and impress people with his skills, punctuality, and manners. [break] Given his natural anxiety, however, it ended up in him being several hours early to show up at the spot. Holding the paper with the mission description, he has scanned it multiple times already. The best thing he could do was to already start the investigation. There was barely anything in the visible distance outside the pub, even the pub itself seemed like it wasn’t meant to be here, in the middle of nothing. That was the Forsaken Realm, and Noah didn’t like the constant reminder of how bad things are everywhere besides the Royal Capital. He couldn’t grasp how people were able to live in such conditions, not that it was way colder than bearable outside, but there also seemed to be a lack of any resources whatsoever. It has been only a couple of months before he was sleeping on the ground, somewhere in the Shadowlands Mana Zone, yet now he got so used to the comfort level of his new room in the Golden Dawn Headquarters, that it made everything else look absurd. [break] Trying to suppress his inner elitist, which he was encountering much more frequently after joining the squad, Noah decided to focus on the task at hand. Thankfully, the location was just about right as there were plenty of people around, sitting by the tables and drinking ale. Approaching someone and starting a conversation would have been the easiest way, however, that wasn’t Noah. He would just patiently sit and observe the people – some of them definitely had something to do with “The Beast” as it was a common topic in the conversations. So far, the idea of the said beast was pretty vague, it didn’t seem to be really doing anything, maybe steal a livestock once or twice, but was that really a job for Magic Knights to solve? [break] Noah´s contemplating was made obvious by his facial expressions, and that made one of the people that were sitting nearby approach him. It was a tall woman, possibly in her forties visibly tipsy. “Soo, The Beast – are you like what? Killing it?” She spoke while occasionally burping. Noah, out of pure politeness just smiled and answered. “We are here to find out what´s behind this “beast”. Killing it if necessary.” The young mage made sure to gesture the quotations, which left the woman unimpressed. She just silently nodded and continued to speak. “Go and speak to the tribe that lives in that mountainous area.” She pointed out of the window, towards the three mountains that were completely covered in snow. There was very little visible, but it looked like there was a small settlement down by it. Noah just nodded. “Thank you. Will do immediately.” With this, he decided to stand up and leave. Not that he would automatically go there, but it was a good way to stop the conversation and get out of this pub before something else could happen. [break] Paying for the water, he would then go out and wait in front of the pub, at a respectable distance so that the local drunks were left alone. He was checking the sky, partly covering his eyes due to the sheer amount of light the clear sky emitted. Verena Reinsberg was a well-known mage, and while Noah wasn’t exactly focused during his research, he knew that she utilized the golem magic to its full capacity. That left him full of anticipation, as he wasn’t familiar with a lot of golems, as well as other mages from his squad.

While Verena wasn't the sort to be as early Noah was, less she was meeting with someone who weilded status or influence such as an important figure within a noble family, she was still early. She made it something of a personal objective to be around twenty minutes early to give herself time to go over her personal possessions and mentally review what might have been essential going into a mission.[break][break]
The brunette had taken to the skies, basking in the glow of the evening sun. Kikka, her primary golem for the purpose of flight, was at the heart of it. Proudly wearing her Golden Dawn mantle, Verena was able to see much of the forests from this aerial view, making sure to note everything she saw in case there were any abnormalities that could tip her off, especially as she drew closer. However, due to the dense forestry, picking up anything notable was a bit harder than she would have liked it to be.[break][break]
As this mission would have the two head in the northeasternmost part of the Clover border, Verena had decided it was important to dress accordingly. Beneath her mantle was her white coat. It covered the entirety of her body from the shoulders down, and it was notably thick. Enough to where it could greatly assist in handling this cold, though wasn't exactly cut-resistant, let alone resistant to magic.[break][break]
Of course, the woman had to wear this coat. The fabric beneath might have covered her entire body from the neck down, but it was the furthest thing from warm. It was comfortable in ideal weather, but it wasn't exactly thick. It was capable of trapping heat in, but when heat was already scarce to begin with, that mattered very little.[break][break]
Aside from her fashion choice, her grimoire was fastened to a pocket inside her coat while the same mark she received in Kikka seemed to be causing her some level of pain in recent time. Or perhaps it was more accurate to say that that it was her curse causing her body to return to aching. The potion's effects were starting to wane, and the brunette was reminded once again just how worse things were for her. She at least had the ring Hania gave to her as well, moved to her left index finger instead of the usual right. She had chosen to glove her right hand for the time being, noticing that the curse was spreading to her hands now as if to spite her.[break][break]
As the brunette drew closer to the local pub that she and Noah had agreed to meet at, she took notice of mountains in the distance. That likely was right on the Diamond border if she was to guess. If she could avoid having to go there, she would have liked to. But this mission was a little unusual. For starters, she knew that traditionally, Magic Knights wouldn't be sent out all this way to handle missing cattle. There was a very real threat, or at least it was believed to be. What exactly she didn't know, but she would get to the bottom with this.[break][break]
Verena had been assigned to this mission alongside another fresh face within the Golden Dawn. Both members were blessed by mana with a four-leaf grimoire from what she had heard of Noah, but she hadn't heard what sort of magic he used, let alone seen it. As the meeting place came into sight, the Summoner mage manipulated Kikka so that she could descend more easily and have a safe landing out of the woods. The last thing she wanted was to scare people with her bizarre golems, and instead opted to walk the remainder, even if she had to limp to do so.[break][break]
It hurt. It hurt. It hurt so much.[break][break]
But that pain of her body beginning to shut down was nothing new to her. That pain of her body deteriorating was something she had been forced to endure for the last seven years. A couple of months of just being able to offset didn't mean she never once prepared to be without it.[break][break]
To her surprise, however, Noah was already there. The brunette glanced off towards the sun. She should still have been on time. Forcibly attempting to walk somewhat normally, the brunette offered a smile to the younger member. "Noah?" she inquired when she saw the figure with the mantle.[break][break]
Verena held out her left hand with the ring, opting to move her gloved hand behind her back. "I'm Verena. Verena Reinsberg. It's a pleasure to meet with you. Have you already talked with the locals in regards to picking up more information? Farmers especially would be a good start if you haven't already managed to talk to them," she advised, before looking at his grimoire if it was visible.[break][break]
She couldn't resist an urge to get some sort of clue as to what his magic was. It was practically taking an additional sort of willpower just not to play twenty questions about his magic and its applications. Wielders of four-leaf grimoires were incredibly rare after all.

[attr="class","noahtext"]Noah was waiting, and anticipation was building up. Thankfully, the Elemental Heiress would soon appear in the sky, riding her golem. A young mage would expect that much, however, he was really surprised when he managed to get a closer look at the golem itself. Not only it was made purely of fabric, which rendered the bird-like figure quite absurd, but the way some part of it faintly remembered parts of the human body like hands or very stylized heads made it rather creepy. Noah could see the artistry in the golem itself, and seeing it with his own eyes, he already managed to get some initial idea. Making golems was a craft, as if one was modeling clay, which she most likely also did. As she approached, Noah would just smile and wave softly. He decided to ignore the way she walked, it seemed like something was weighing her down. It wasn’t polite to ask that question immediately, but he would make sure to elaborate on that later, if the right moment came. Verena was also very well dressed, possibly overdressed for this situation, which made Noah chuckle a little bit. The idea of diva coming to the pub he just visited, it would be a funny spectacle to see. [break] “Hello Verena, you are right. I am Noah and the pleasure is on my side.” Continuing to wave a little bit, it was awkward as he didn’t want to seem intimidated by the presence of someone who he could possibly look up to, but also being casual wasn’t his style as well. Quickly running out of these useless thoughts, Noah would just continue to answer the questions asked. “Yes, I have been here a little earlier. Waiting in this pub, there were several people talking about the target of this mission, “The Beast” if you will.” He stopped, only to recollect the full scenario that had happened there, trying to pick up only the important bits. “Overall, it is giving me a feeling of an urban legend. I wouldn’t be very surprised if it were just some lowly rogues trying to survive. One woman there spoke to me directly, and she pointed me to try and talk to the tribe that lives near that mountain.” By this time, Noah would just point in the distance, a huge snow-covered mountain was visible, intimidating by its presence. He would slowly start and walk towards it, as he saw a few stops that were worth checking out. [break] “The woman had been drinking a lot and I am not sure how reliable her information was. Either way, there are a couple of small farms on the way over there. We might encounter some farmers who would have a better grasp of the situation. I suggest we walk towards the direction of the mountain and see if we can speak to someone else.” Then, he would stop himself as he realized something. “Or fly, either way, is fine by me.” He wasn’t sure why, but it looked that with the way Verena was walking, it could be more comfortable to use her golem. Not wanting to directly point out the elephant in the room, he would just grab his broom and quickly take off, keeping himself barely above the ground. Occasionally checking the cloth golem, Noah wanted to take a better look, examine it. It was really creeping him out, but at the same time, he couldn’t deny the artistry that created it. The last time he saw a golem was in the Cursed Forest, when the captain Blake summoned some. But it happening in a very poorly lit environment, the shadow golems left barely any impression on him. [break] “I am really happy to finally be on a mission with someone from the Golden Dawn. I have been recruited only very recently.” He smiled, trying to pass the short while during the flight. Slowly, they started approaching a small farm, one of many. This one, however, had an elderly couple in front of it. Two of them were trying to push a carriage that was parked in front of their humble house, blocking the pavement that led to their doors. Seeing it was empty, they still struggled. Noah would just nod at Verena that they can just come and try asking them. Once he approached the couple, he would just smile. “Let me help with that.” He then just gestured with his hand and the empty carriage moved very smoothly, as if it was a feather. The couple now looked very pleased as they thanked Noah. He then turned back to Verena, as he felt like he talked too much already.

Verena could tell that Noah was a little tense. He was very "green" as far as mages. What was the term Satori used for them again? Greenhorns? Whatever the case, Verena could tell Noah was a bit tense. He felt a little unsure of how to approach her, and that saddened her a little bit. Still, he was at least doing a good job and his manners were much better than Charles' by comparison, though it wasn't as if she had an issue with the Black Bulls way of speaking.[break][break]
Even if he was a little tense, Verena noted that he was able to push past that when he spoke. He was very formal, and when he answered her question, he did so with composure. He listed with detail some of what he had overheard. Unsurprisingly, this... "Beast" as it were was the talk of the town, and seemingly everyone had something to say about it if she was to believe what Noah heard.[break][break]
"An urban legend type of thing, huh..." Verena said, pressing a thumb against her temple.[break][break]
The brunette knew that that was at least a possibility. After all, way out here in the Forsaken Region, there were a number of sightings of creatures from people that turned out to be nothing more than false alarms. It wouldn't be the first time that they were sent after an ancient animal only to find one that was just slightly larger than what was considered average. But when one was powerless, the mind loved to play tricks to justify that powerlessness. She believed that these people certainly saw something, at the very least. However...[break][break]
This was still the Forsaken Region, and Grand Mana Zones were relevant throughout the entire region. Not just that, with the threat of three powerful daemons, still being capable of exerting their influence in this plane not unlike the creation of the Shadow Grand Mana Zone, it was still very much in the realm of possibility that there was something that had been twisted by happenstance. It was difficult to know for sure whether or not this was superstition or not.[break][break]
"...Whether or not it's an urban legend, the fact is someone or something is stealing their livestock," Verena reminded the younger Golden Dawn member. "We should at least get to the bottom of what it is and handle it accordingly. Let's start by visiting that tribe. We'll stop off at a few farms on the way as well though. For something like this, the most important thing to do is gather information first."
In every scenario, the fact was something wrong was happening. They were here to correct that wrong. The "who" wasn't as important as the "what" in a scenario like this. There were plenty of reports of farmers who were losing valuable cattle and other livestock. So the question was what exactly was doing this? It wasn't just one rogue rancher given the scope of things. Something strange was happening, and it was for the best to absolve that as soon as possible.[break][break]
Verena had Noah get onto her golem. As she hadn't made an additional golem, Noah's only choice was to hold on tightly. However, due to her own dislike of being touched, she had to adjust Kikka slightly so as to give him a leash-like item of cloth. Lose enough for him to hold onto, though as it was part of the golem's body, it was very much secure and wouldn't be falling off. She made sure not to go too fast, though as its maximum speed was just twelve meters-per-second, it wasn't exactly a speedy golem either way.[break][break]
"This is my first mission officially as a member of the Golden Dawn too, actually," Verena explained, looking back to him with a smile on her face. "I'm also fairly new, having been recruited into it through the Magic Knight Exams. As we're both new, let's work hard to ensure we make the honor the squad's reputation."[break][break]
They stopped first in front of a couple near a farm when Verena had spotted that there seemed to be an issue. Descending a bit away from them so that she could keep the golem out of sight, out of mind. It would likely cause more issues than be helpful. She didn't feel like having to explain her logic with said golems after all.[break][break]
Noah was capable of handling the carriage by himself, something that surprised Verena. While she wasn't capable of seeing it, she could tell that he used a spell of some kind that greatly increased his strength -- enough to be able to single-handedly move the carriage by himself. It was truly impressive. Verena smiled at the couple after the fact. Noah's silence made her realize that he wanted her to speak to them, something she wasn't exactly against, but...[break][break]
"Good evening you two," Verena said. "We're here on behalf of the Golden Dawn. Have you two happened to hear anything about the beast? Patterns of attacks? Time of attacks? Any sightings?" she asked, deciding to get to the point.[break][break]
The elderly couple nodded their head with the woman being the first to speak. "Thank the Spirits someone finally showed up. We've lost three cattle and one of our pigs in the last two weeks with no sign. Just poof! Gone," she lamented.[break][break]
Her husband spoke up next. "It's been a real godsdamned pain in the ass. Didn't think we'd get any help. Yer lookin for clues, huh... we haven't seen the Beast anywhere. But I have seen the prints. Big sonvabitch for sure. Probably at least seven or eight feet tall going off the size of those things. The prints all lead deep into the woods, but they get lost after that. Always attacks at night though, like the coward it fuckin is. If you see it, kill it. God knows our livestock ain't lasting..."
Verena glanced back to Noah. It seemed like that was everything then...[break][break]
"Thank you," Verena said. She was about to perform a curtsey when she realized that the gesture was lost way out here. "We'll be sure to handle this issue swiftly. If all works out well, we'll be done before the sun is up."[break][break]
Verena glanced over to Noah after walking away from the couple. This time, she made two Kikka; one for both of them to fly upon having dispersed the previous one. "Let's visit the tribe next. We got quite a bit of information, but I want to first check something with another group." And with that, they flew off...!

[attr="class","noahtext"]Noah was a little hesitant when he got onto Kikka, sitting besides Verena, however she made him an extra cloth piece to hold onto and that helped a lot. He wasn’t sure how much of this was her being uncomfortable or if she just noticed Noah´s general awkwardness when he was supposed to sit beside her and briefly thought about holding onto her shoulders. Thankfully, none of that happened and the ride on golem was rather pleasant. Young mage wasn’t used to ride on anything else besides the broom, but he could get used to the soft cloth golem, which wasn’t breaking his back, unlike the magic broom. Verena spoke, and Noah listened carefully. She could probably feel that he was nervous and he hated that it was showing. Once she pointed out that whatever the thing is, it needs to be taken seriously Noah just nodded. He himself initially didn’t just think it would be so pressing, but realized that he sounded rather pretentious when explaining his findings. [break] “Very well, I am sure we will manage to find out more.” When Verena spoke about the fact that this is her first official mission as a member of The Golden Dawn, Noah was quite surprised. He knew that Magic Knights Exams happened, and that he had missed them by a bit only because he didn’t have a broom and had to get to the Royal Capital by his foot all the way from the Common Region. It was reassuring, maybe he shouldn’t be so serious, after all this is something that the two of them had in common. He had completed a couple of missions as a Magic Knight already, but nothing bigger worth of mentioning. Noah had a bad feeling that this would just be another casual mission, but didn’t voice his concerns. [break] Even though he was originally really angry and disappointed about missing the Magic Knight Exams, now knowing that mages like Verena were participating, it was probably for the best. Once they arrived closer to the farm, Verena parked her golem a little further away, which was probably for the best, it was really creepy in some ways. Noah was interested in this, but decided he would get to that later. Approaching the old couple was very easy, as both of them were fairly concerned, and by their description, it seemed like “The Beast” might actually be a real thing. If the footprints themselves were bigger than Noah himself, it probably wasn’t a monster to be taken lightly. But what could it be? Was it some forgotten mana creature that has lied dormant and only decided to come out recently? Were the feeding conditions in mountains getting so bad that it had to resort to visiting villagers now? There were a lot of questions and barely any answers. [break] Once the talk was over, Noah just smiled and thanked them politely, and followed Verena back. She now made two golems, and Noah being more familiar with the creature itself just elegantly jumped on its back, ready to be guided. It wasn’t as fast as he would imagine, but at the same time if it were going any after he could get nauseous really easily, and the last thing he wanted to do was to show the Elemental Heiress what he ate today. “I meant to ask you, this cloth golem is very unique, how much control do you exactly have of its appearance, do you craft them specifically, as a symbol?” It was an ideal opportunity to chat a little, as the next stop was still quite far away. [break] “Regarding what the old couple said – it definitely seemed to be bothering them and honestly, if at least half of what they said was true it could really be some mana creature coming from the mountain itself. I guess it would also make sense, given the hostile climate up there and probably not a lot of feeding opportunities. However, I still feel like there is a possibility of it just being a very elaborate cover-up of some bandits. Do you have any thoughts?” He asked, obviously interested in what she had to say as his impressions were that she is. There was still a plenty of time for any real conclusions though. Verena nodded her head when Noah noted that they'd find out more information. Whether it was urban legend or not, there was clearly something at work here that was disturbing and alarming the people here. So the sooner they could get the answers needed, the better. The elderly couple had been incredibly helpful with their information. The two had gotten useful information and so the best place to start was actually with those tracks. Verena thanked the elderly couple before walking away like with Noah.[break][break]
Verena stopped for a moment when she saw how Noah had jumped onto Kikka. Usually, the appearance of such constructs would give most pause, even if they had seen them before. It eased her a little bit; she wasn't exactly happy that this was the best golem she had for the purpose of flight after all. It was more likely to scare people. But nonetheless, it was the best method of transportation she had especially in this area.[break][break]
Noah asked a question that actually caught her off guard as they were taking off. Not many people asked why some of her golems took the forms and shapes they did, causing her to laugh a little awkwardly. It wasn't a question she was expecting to hear at this point; she just assumed people always assumed she was just some sort of crazed woman who had broken from her time in Kikka on some level. While that might not necessarily have been entirely wrong, the truth was...[break][break]
"I scare very easily," she admitted, sighing as they were high into the sky. "But I hate that about myself. Every bad dream I've had I force myself to remember. I turn the nightmarish elements of my bad dreams into golems. And then, they don't seem so scary anymore. If you have complete control of the shape and movement of your fears, then can't you say you have complete control of said fears?" she rhetorically asked.[break][break]
"Golems like Kikka give me a sense of peace and a feeling of control when I'd otherwise have none."[break][break]
"But to answer your first question, the control I have over my golems including their designs comes down to my imagination and my ability to mold my imagination into reality. I'm a perfectionist as well, which is why I haven't had any new flying golems in a while," she lamented.[break][break]
Verena listened attentively as Noah brought back the old couple's statements. He noted that he felt like it could have been bandits still. Verena nodded her head. "It could be a beast, it could be bandits. It could be any number of things, it's too soon to tell and jump to conclusions. What we do know is that cattle are going missing and it's worrying the people here. Our job right now is to get the facts and go from there," she calmly explained.[break][break]
Verena had her golems stop at the tracks of the farm that had been mentioned. A little faded at this point, but certainly large. They led into the forest as well. Given the fallen trees, it was easy to tell that this was certainly the work of something large that had come barreling through. "Let's check with those nomads now," she said, her eyes looking north.
Element: Cloth[break]Rank: Intermediate[break]Size: Up to 6 meters tall[break]Mana Cost: 20 | 10[break]Type of Golem: Balanced[break]Applicable Perks: Puppet Master, Reinforced Golems, Fierce Golems[break]Description: Upon saying the name of the spell, a bizarre bird-like golem appears. Matching the theme of Billy, Verena took inspiration from the horrors of the town right down to the name. Tired of her own inability to fly, as well as seeking the freedom that came with experiencing that sort of rush of mobility in the Dungeon with Bengal, the heiress went to work on crafting a new type of golem, unlike any other she had so far.[break][break]It possesses an impressive wingspan that's roughly equal in size to its height, and if being used for transportation, then it can carry up to two people; however, its speed is decreased to 10m/s if it is being used in such a manner. In addition, she can make additional Kikka for every 30 [CON] she has, maxing out at a total of 4 additional golems to summon.[break][break]Though she still believes the human form to be more ideal for the purpose of crafting golems, this looks like a perfectly ordinary bird made from the purest of white cloth. Just... an exceptionally large bird. Without a beak. And talons that are surprisingly ...unsharp. Instead, the feet look more like... human hands, made from the same color that matches the face in terms of the color of cloth. Also, it lacks a beak; instead, it possesses an eerily resemblance to a human face, sewed on with large blue eyes so as to stare seemingly right into a person's soul. The color of the cloth used to replicate the face is very similar to Verena's own skin color.[break][break]When used for offensive purposes, Kikka's most notable approach to dealing with things involves using its feet(?) to pick up adversaries, then toss them or drop them, depending on how heavy they are. It also possesses a nasty headbutt. Both instances deal intermediate levels of damage.[break]
