In...out...in...out... A lithe figure sat cross-legged on the grass, eyes half-closed and hands on her knees, palms up. Slowly...lower...yes... Though sitting upwards, her posture was relaxed, and nothing moved except for the slight diaphragm movement from her breathing. Lower...deeper... She was attempting to breathe as low from the abdominal as possible. She needed to concentrate and focus on the flow of life from her core. She had only slipped into the peaceful zone a couple times, and wanted to develop getting into that sweet spot faster.
[break][break]
Yes, that’s it. Relax...breathe...
[break][break]
Ki. It was an ancient thing, a practice that was as old as time itself. It was all about the energy in and around one’s body. She had discovered it whenever she quieted her mind and relaxed her body. The first time she slipped into the zone, it was like being in a trance. Her internal awareness was heightened, and though she did not move her body, she could feel everything that was happening around her. The air circulating around her, the force of life rippling throughout time. All that, she could feel and sense it.
[break][break]
Be quiet...be still...
[break][break]
Around the human, there was almost no movement - no abnormal movement that would catch anyone’s eye. However, the young woman had picked up a multitude of things happening. The gradual movement of the sun’s course across the sky above her. The sparkling reflections of the sun dancing upon the rushing stream. The slight rippling of the grass beneath her. The wavering shadows that are cast from every solid thing. Those shadows were her allies, the very essence of her element. While some things could be seen with the naked eye, some required a heightened concentration of cultivation in order to truly see, and that was the mission she had given herself.
[break][break]
Paix...peace...
[break][break]
If there was one thing she could be proud of, it would be her patience. Because of her so-called ‘cursed’ scar across her left eye, the young woman had grown up alone with no other children to play and interact with. As a result, she had discovered that she found true peace with nature, saturating herself into her surroundings until she felt like she was one with the earth. It was why she was alone here now, by a small stream in the forest on the outskirts of town. Her blades and her shadows became her solace and refuge, and she had poured all her time and energy in working on her magic and physical skills. The journey had not been an easy one, but she did not regret it.
[break][break]
Tranquillité...tranquility...
[break][break]
The slight southern breeze ruffling through the grass, and brushing through the long willow leaves around her. The consistent sound of water tumbling and rushing over rocks from the stream a few meters away. The rustling in the bushes from a nearby rabbit. The occasional chirp of a lonesome jay above her. Even though she was in the woods on the outskirts of Kiten, she could pick up the faint sounds of the town’s activities. The low hum of town folks’ chattering. The rough clatter of wooden wheels over cobblestones. The ringing chimes of the local church bell that signaled the middle of the day.
[break][break]
Noon already? Her mind had snapped back to reality. It only took one thought to bring her back down to earth. The femme opened her eyes. Right now, under the sunlight, her grey eyes took on an almost bluish hue, an aquatic shade that matches the shadowy parts of the stream nearby. Those clear orbs scanned her surroundings. She had packed some food and water, which was in the bag beside her. However, she did not feel hungry yet, and was slightly riffed that she had allowed herself to get distracted.
[break][break]
She pushed her red hair away from her face, and prepared to settle back in. It was through an old martial arts master in Kiten that she had learned the basics of discovering her ki. It was all a chance of fate, really, that brought her under the training of the master. When out on one of her solitary walks, she had spotted the old man sitting very still underneath a tree. Somehow sensing that he was doing something very important, she had squatted down in a place where she could keep an eye on him, while still maintaining a healthy distance in case he was about to unleash a high-level spell.
[break][break]
Of course, nothing drastic like that happened. After a few minutes, the small man only opened his eyes and seemed to stare right at her. She was startled, but maintained the stare steadily, though her posture was tense and she was ready to jump away at any sudden movement. The man only smiled at her, and beckoned her closer. That was the beginning of a special relationship with the ki teacher, who went one to instruct her on many things.
[break][break]
One practice he had taught her, was to breathe in a ‘square,’ and she did so right now. She ran through the steps in her mind. Breathe in. Hold for five seconds. Breathe out. Hold for five seconds. And repeat. Breathing was such an easy, everyday thing. Most people do not even think twice about how this very essential movement keeps the entire life system running, but being aware of it was the first step. For her, it was an easy step, recognizing the importance and significance of proper breathing techniques, and she found it easy to pick up what the master had taught her.
[break][break]
The first time she had accessed this ki zone, it had frightened her, because it was like being caught in a spell and being unable to break from it. It was almost like her soul was detached from her physical body. However, it was her mother’s voice calling her that brought her out of that mental place. She had excitedly shared what she had discovered and learned, and the old woman encouraged it, though the latter knew little about it herself.
[break][break]
Ah, her mother. The red-haired girl smiled faintly at the warm memory. Her mother was always supportive of her adopted daughter’s learning experiences, especially when it came to strengthening her physical prowess or mental cultivation. However, she was sure that her adopted mother would have been even happier if she had ventured out more in a social aspect. But she had passed, and it was too late for regrets. She could only do her best to better herself and find her purpose in life. But until then, she would work hard at cultivating her ki.
[break][break]
"Encore une fois...one more time," she murmured, rolling her neck a few times and settling herself back to her former posture. She took a deep breath and stretched out her arms before putting them back to their former position. "One more time."
