The salty fresh wind ran through his hair as Qiao relaxed on the beach. It was busier than usual with the competition that was taking place. Qiao was barely able to even enjoy his time off with all the hustle and bustle of the people around him. It was not entirely sure he wanted to relax. His mind and sensory skills made him check out all the people passing by out of pure habit. As his mind was too busy he naturally could not relax.
“Maybe it is too boring to try and relax. If my body is used to being active I may as well sign up to join in the competition. It shall give me something to do to pass the time at least.”
Qiao got up and picked up his beach towel. He was wearing red swim trunks, and had sunscreen on his nose, arms, and back. He could heal sunburn if he got damage but the pain even for a second was too much. Qiao did not want to risk his creamy skin if he could help it. It would explain the wide hat and shades on his face. He was dressed practically as a lonely tourist.
There were two boats in the dock doing last minute sign up. Of the two Qiao decided to sign up on the boat of Verona de la Rouge. The other boat was being run by a man from Crimson Lions. If it was another squad he would have considered it more. He did not want to cause another accidental incident of him working when he was supposed to be on vacation. If he was doing too much the juniors in his squad would lack a chance to grow. The fact that he was not supposed to be working was the only reason he did not have his mantle on him.

The rowdy audience aboard the Verona de la Rogue drowned out any possible peace the book-loving girl wanted. Loud, obnoxious, fre spirited. The latter wasn't necessarily a trait she frowned on, but when ones own spirit came at the well being of those around them, then for the former royal it became an issue. Of course, it wasn't her place to say anything. She traced steps back in her head, trying to ascertain what exactly had happened that brought things to this point...
"...where did I go wrong?" Verena asked, her voice drowned out by the other sailors and fisherman, defeated as she rested her arms over the railing on the deck.
The truth was, a little thief had made away with her bag that contained her money. Without that, she had no money for food, and she wasn't someone who could reliably hunt for her own food. She'd learned to, of course, over the five years, but she preferred to have backups due to her own personal inability to properly hunt. So in an emergency situation like this, the only option left available to her was to take on these outrageous quests. Of course, there was no real need to think about who to choose; a renegade or a Magic Knight. At least she knew to be on guard with the former at all times.
The number of times she'd been to the royal capital could be counted on one hand in these five years, and she always preferred to keep it that way. However, when her food grew scarce and her coin even more so, she always crawled back to the capital. Plenty of well paying royals for jobs they themselves incapable of doing that were as basic as it got. It was easy money, but it usually meant having to be around the most obnoxious and unreasonable of people. It seemed like this was no exception.
It was last minute, but it was precisely because of that she got word of it and made haste over here. Her fishing skills weren't impressive, and Verena doubted she'd manage to nab the biggest fish. Even if she could, she lacked the strength to really do anything about it. She'd more likely get pulled into the sea than manage to nab a big one.
For now, all she could do was wait on the boat to set sail, as she tried to avoid the chaos of everything going on. Amid the happy go lucky sailors and fisherman, she was clearly sticking out like a sore thumb. On this occasion, she simply let her uncut hair fall to legs, adorning the blue jumpsuit and dress. She was clearly not ready to go fishing, but it wasn't as if she had much a choice. Money was, after all, money.

The registration was free but it costs to buy the poles. Qiao brought two before getting on in case one broke. He was always one to be more prepared than what was necessary. He made it onto the boat without issue and was enjoying the ride to their destination as the boat kept picking up speed. He did not want to stick around for too long with the salty sea air hitting him in the face due to the speed of the boat. He could not afford the sea salt drying out his skin. [break][break] As Qiao made his way to a more secluded space he stopped in surprise. One of the passengers was abnormally stronger than the usual standard. At first Qiao thought it was another knight but could not recall seeing her in a squad, or any magic knight indicators. As far as he could surmise about women Qiao even believed she could be called pretty. He decided he needed to take the initiative and get to know her. [break][break] “First time on a boat?” Qiao was starting with small talk. It was a shame he did not socialize often so his skills were as dusty as a medical book in the Crimson Lion base. “You look as unprepared for this fishing trip as I do. Except this get up is clearly a disguise to catch the thousand league shirtless fish. It’s an interesting species that only goes after people not wearing a shirt. I heard it taste delicious on the other hand.” Qiao was teasing, mixing fact with fiction he was trying to lighten the mood. He read in a book that exaggerated stories were a decent way to make friends. [break][break] Qiao was using his pink wind as if trying to make an illustration of what he was talking about. It looked more like an exaggerated stick figure puppet as Qiao was not the artistic type. He looked refined and cool when decked out but choosing clothes and making art was different. It was a shame that even some of his inventions suffered in the same way. They worked well, they just did not always look the best. He sometimes had artisans help out just to make the aesthetic better. [break][break] “If you want to catch any semblance of a fish. You can use one of these rods I rented. I tend to be a bit of a pessimist when it comes to equipment going wrong. If you want to use it just return it to the boat owners on departure.” He was not worried about her breaking the rod. Qiao knew he could afford it even if she did.

Of course, she did have a fishing pole. She'd managed to convince the one renting them out to let her borrow one. Unfortunately, the one lent to her was in such terrible quality that even she could tell it wouldn't be capable of catching any meaningful fish, let alone the biggest one. It was quite a frustrating situation, but as long as someone on her team won, maybe she could...
Well, no. Things hadn't been going according to plan. If it wasn't for the fact it was effectively a free trip out to sea, allowing her to get a more reasonable idea of how a water-based golem should be designed, she probably wouldn't have accepted. Still, for all the factors of chaos she hadn't predicted to this extent, this was nothing short of hell. Even Verena's timid nature was overwhelmed with frustration--though, that feeling was mostly a cover for her own anxiety that simply wanted her to run away off the boat before it departed.
"First time on a boat?"
The question caught the brunette off guard. Nobody had taken the time to talk to her during this time, mostly because she tried to keep her face as out of sight as possible. After all, someone couldn't be beautiful if their face couldn't be seen. Yet, it wasn't as if she had a perfect means to conceal her face. After all, because she was at sea, she dared not bring books with her.
Still, a question was asked. Her bad mood wasn't a reason to take it out on anyone who seemed to have good intentions. She nodded in response to the strange man who tempted to break the ice with an even stranger joke. When he finished his little story, Verena's eyes dropped, avoiding eye contact, before offering a sweet smile in return.
"...An attempt to break the ice, to try to make friends. I've read about this, too. But uhm... I'm sorry, that was just..." The poor girl was trying so hard not to be rude. She didn't finish her sentence, but she couldn't hide the pity she felt given the horrible joke made. "...I'm probably the last person to give advice on this sort of thing, but uhm... if you want to approach someone, rather than starting off with a joke out of nowhere, maybe start with a question, instead? I read that it gives the illusion of interest, even if there's none to be found. Though, I apologize if I'm overstepping my bounds..."
When he offered the fishing rod, however, Verena eyed the man with some suspicion. "...This one isn't going to break easily, right? The one I was given looks like it could snap in half at any-"
A sailor was knocked right into her rod, snapping it like a twig.
"...moment."

Qiao was momentarily taken back by how the rod broke so easily. With the way it snapped Qiao was pretty sure he could make a better rod. He was not angry but did not want to let the girl become nervous from how it broke. [break][break] “Don’t worry about it. Truthfully I don’t even need the rods. I was just doing it for aesthetics. I heard that to play the part you should at least look the part. Besides this much damage is a simple fix.” [break][break] Qiao opened his grimoire and released a restoration spell. He was making sure to keep his mana in control, normally if he kept it loose the powerful surge of his magic could cause side-effects to weaker mages. A bevy of pink rats popped out of his grimoire and started fixing stuff. Some grabbed the broken end of the rod and crawled to put it back, some started repairing the ship in range of the spell, some even started helping the sailors out by healing them up. It was a low level restoration spell but it still had its uses. The fishing rod was fixed as if it was brand new. It even looked polished and in a better condition than when he brought it. [break][break] “See good as new. Magic can be such a great tool to help.” Qiao did not pay attention to the full extent of how his spell worked. The area around the duo looked better than the rest of the ship. The floor even looked clean enough to eat off of. Qiao walked to the edge of the ship and started fishing. The fish were not biting enough and Qiao did not want to actually stay in the sun. He cast another spell to knock two of the bigger fish out. “Drats! I forgot I do not know any magic to actually bring them up here. Think you can help? At least so I can get out of the sun. You can even have one of this fish. Pretty sure they are big enough for us to win.”

The rats rush outward leaving pink trails. The trails will be absorbed by living things and restore life and vitality. The rats can be seen fighting curses and gobbling up dirt. The rats can even be watched repairing damage to structures by transmuting the stuff into bits of wind and putting it back in place before releasing the magic. The spell is only meant for healing and restoration. Unfortunately the rats cannot differentiate and all stuff will be healed and repaired that is within range of the spell. [break][break] The amount of rats you will see will be dependent on the severity of the damage. As some rats will be repairing dresses, some will be scampering to heal people, a few could be doing construction work, some may even be sleeping on top of plants to revitalize them. The rats will also only appear in a general circle of activity. Qiao can create more circles of activity for every 30 he has in control besides the initial circle.

The rat head tries to bite at a target with the giant front teeth. As if trying to bite it into a pulp, if bitten it will cause crushing damage. The spell is target specific and like some of his other spells can disappear at his will (he coats it with an illusion to hide the mana signature and sight of it). This is negated if the sensory stat or ki is used to spot it. He can change targets one per round. For every 30 in control he can create an additional rat like this besides the initial rat.

This stranger was quite kind to Verena thus far. He even went so far as to actually treat the rod that had been snapped when a man had been pushed into it, fixing it as if it was as good as new. It was even more surprising to see that his magic involved rats. They were in the capital, and so Verena expected to see Spells that were indicative of people's ego. Even if not all magic was equally beautiful, something like this would have traditionally been frowned on by nobles, even if they were eccentric in color.
"Thank you," she responded in kind after getting her fishing rod fixed, taken aback by kindness of the man. Though her earlier image was one that showed frustration and irritation on matters, she was a lot calmer; in fact, she had returned to her usual timid nature. This type of healing magic was quite convenient, even working on inorganic material and enhancing it.
Then, another spell was cast. In an instant, two large fish were knocked out. The man was clearly not wanting to waste any time. Verena truly respected that. She didn't feel like wasting time either. She wanted the money and to leave. Even if she thought she might have been able to learn something from observing the sea, the fact was the people here were too roudy for her liking; there was nothing she could particularly do about that, and the sooner she could leave, the happier she'd be.
Even still, when the man asked for some help to take care of the two fish, the brunette fidgeted uncomfortably. She did, though she hadn't really employed the spell like that in this particular manner. It'd stand to reason that she could, but... she'd still have to remove her grimoire. Well, whatever.
With a deep breath, Verena nodded her head. Verena took the grimoire out from its holster, suspending it in the air with her own mana. "Carbon Restraining Magic: Chains of the Past."
There wasn't any earth for the chains to spring forth from; instead, Verena herself was their source, emitting from a single hand. Of course, she cast the spell twice, allowing her to use one from the other hand as these chains wrapped around the knocked out fish. Then, she wrapped her hands around these chains, slowly dragging them towards the ship. She seemed to be struggling somewhat, as she clearly wasn't experienced in using this particular spell in this manner, not to mention using herself as the origin point, but...
With some effort on her part, she managed to drag them back to the ship. "There..." she said as she pulled them up on the dock, panting heavily. She'd let Qiao decide what to do with them. She wore herself out trying to accomplish this. Even for a mage, her stamina and strength were appalling.
Looking up to her pink magic using friend, as she sat down on the boat, too tired to bring herself to stand back up right now, she asked, "Do we just turn them in now?"

With her companion preoccupied after they had reeled in the fish, Verena was left in an awkward position. She wasn't really sure how missions worked. She was no magic knight. She knew where she found out about this mission, but she didn't particularly know much else. Her companion had got called away for something else while they were on board.
Verena had been asked to present the fish to the captain, but she had made the process quick, and didn't really feel like striking a conversation less she was spoken to. The less she stood out, the better in her eyes. Still, it was a bit of a problem. She had no idea when the ship would dock back on land. It was incredibly frustrating that it was beyond her control. How long did these fishing expeditions last, anyway? Would they be heading back to the land soon? She wanted to learn more about the sea, but with the chaos on deck, it was impossible to. How problematic...
In any case, her best course of action was to simply wait until it docked. For now, her role was finished. It was, wasn't it?
ah... how tedious this was.
Verena thought about how she had ended up in this situation to begin with. She was just waiting to get a new book, and in the process, she had her coin stolen. The thief was nowhere in sight, which made this a serious issue. She was planning on catching dinner here tonight, too, as it wasn't as if the woods were reasonably nearby. Her only issue was to just take the nearest mission, and it brought her here.
But ... there really wasn't anything to do. How tiresome. The girl found herself passing out on the boat while excited fisherman and chaos ensued. Thankfully she was a light sleeper; otherwise, something awful might have happened. Sweet dreams...
