Artemis found herself making her way towards Babel, but instead of taking a golem through flight, or even her Magical Broom, the Vice Captain of the Green Mantis Magic Squad instead had chartered a carriage for her to ride in, driven by one of her more trusted carriage driver from Hapshass. She had been visiting her mother recently, something that she found herself doing less and less in the previous months.artemis supposed that her life had become more hectic recently, after all. Becoming the Vice Captain of a Magic Knights Squad was for more work than meets the eye, after all. Most of everyone would have thought that the Vice Captain were less burdened with the duties, especially since the Vice Captains have most had a background role when it comes to events and the sort. But, even Artemis would have stood corrected. The role of a Vice Captain seems to be somewhere between a second in command, and the personal dump of the Captain of the Magic Squad when it comes to paperwork. Artemis could have sworn that most of her work for the past few weeks had been to do and redo paperwork filed by the Captain for the Green Mantis. The count was numerous, and she could have sworn that the Captain, Barron “Hannibal” Castle, has been piling these paperwork since before she had become the Vice Captain. However, she could not complain. She had wanted this position, and now that she had it, Artemis knew that she needed to keep it. Her plans and goals for the future were all embedded into place now, and all she had to do was bide her time.[break][break]
“Lady Somerset, it seems that we are arriving earlier than I had anticipated.” The carriage driver would knock on the window just behind the driver’s seat. It was a small opening of glass, though the window itself cannot be opened from inside and out. It was more so for looking through than anything else. “The gates of the city seems to be open, so I am taking a guess and saying that you have been expected, my lady.” Artemis nodded to herself. She expected nothing less, after all. Unlike most towns and cities, the town of Babel is a fortress in and of itself. It was not some rickety town that held no true entrance nor exit. Rather, the town of Babel is a stronghold that could hold down a siege if need be. It was a fortress that held its citizens with great defense. Even Artemis would be hard pressed to trying to break in if she had had to. And truly, there was a reason for such type of a defensive structure. From the information that she had been privy with, the town itself was made to be a research hub. Artemis had been told that the town of Babel was where most of the Clover Kingdom’s researchers were located. The mighty tower that stood in the middle of the fortress did not only house the commoners and those who lived in the town, but it also held knowledge untold and bound from the public. It had intrigued Artemis, and she was sure that she would find out more as we went through this specific mission that she had taken right off the table when it had been handed out to the Green Mantis Magic Squad base. [break][break]
Stepping off the carriage now, Artemis would nod towards the carriage driver that had stopped just before the gates of the town of Babel. From what she could see at first glance, the guards of the town seemed to be in high alert. There was something that was bothering them, way more than how guards are bothered by visitors to their town. Their eyes darted back and forth, as though searching for danger but found none. Artemis herself would be looking around, finding nothing but the usual surroundings of Babel, nothing out of the ordinary since the last time she had visited the town itself. At least, as ordinary as a fortress town could be.[break][break]
“Artemis Somerset, Vice Captain of the Green Mantis.” She would start, making her way to stand in font of the gate guards. Her Vice Captain’s mantle over her shoulders, the woman nodded at the men who seemed to stand at an even more stiff position. Their eyes trained towards her mantle, before bowing in unison. It had caught Artemis by surprise, and she had almost reached for her grimoire and started blasting away with her spells. But, her combat senses detected no ill will.[break][break]
“At ease, gentlemen. Welcome to the Town of Babel, Vice Captain.” One of the more elderly men greeted, bowing slightly, before gesturing towards his men. “The men who are used to guarding the town, at least these bunch, have experience with the Diamond Wars fighting beside the Captains and Vice Captains of the Magic Knights. They only show respect.” The men now got back up to their original position and greeted in unison. “Welcome, Vice Captain.” The leader of the guards shook his head, “And it seems that they still uphold the old military style of greetings. Annoying, but respectful, I suppose.” The elderly man would sight, before gesturing towards the town. “Shall we go? The researchers are waiting for you just on the other side of the town proper. While we have a giant tower, most of the research done that can be destructive is operated outside the town’s limits. Minimizing casualties and all.”[break][break]
Artemis nodded at the elderly man’s observations. It was true, after all. The destructive nature of magical experiments made it so that they were hazards. Even if one did not want nor mean to hurt anyone, casualties were something that one cannot control, especially if the experiment went awry. What perturbed Artemis, however, was the amount of respect she seemed to be getting from these guards. It made sense, however, since they were veterans. However, she was not one to stand with the ceremony. Artemis was a woman who believed in meritocracy more than the current hierarchical system of the Clover Kingdom. And at the moment, even as the Vice Captain of the Green Mantises, she knew that she had not accomplished anything of note. These men were veterans who had fought in the frontlines. To her, they would deserve more respect than what they had just given her. They had put their lives on the line in service to their country, and that is something that can never be repaid in full. It was, at least, good to see that their service to the military did not leave them in poverty. Working as guards of a town paid well enough, and they were taken care of by the town itself. They also saw little action, which was always welcome to veterans.
They were then off towards the other side of the town itself. Artemis would wave towards the carriage driver, signalling for the man to get his horses set up in a barn and to wait for her return. She had rather enjoyed the slow pace of the journey by carriage, and she would rather have a relaxing journey back to Hapshass than a quick one. [break][break]
“Do you know what type of experiment the researchers are doing?” Artemis would ask her guide, “The reports that were passed to my desk was fairly simple, yet to ask for a more senior Magic Knight to help means that this is much more than what meets the eye.” She would conclude, though her eyes were now trained towards a large area where a few people, the researchers they would seem, converged. They were huddling over something, and out in the open, it looked quite silly. Yet, Artemis would not judge so easily. She knew just how destructive magical objects can be. Being out in the open like this was most likely the best way that these researchers do not accidentally blow the town of Babel out into non existence. [break][break]
The elderly guard would glance at her, before pointing towards the group. “This is as far as we go. Rules and all. The researchers over there should be able to answer all of your questions.” The elderly man would then shake his head, “Good luck.”[break][break]
Artemis would thank her guides, before turning around and making her way towards the group of researchers. At this point, the woman was more curious than anything. Her latent mana sensing could feel what was happening, and it was nothing good. There was some form of foreign mana in their air, surrounding the researchers.[break][break]
She stood corrected.[break][break]
Artemis neared the researchers, and found herself staring at a mirror of sorts. Old, and very much something that was a relic of the past, Artemis found herself glued not to the object itself, but rather, to the image that was behind the so called mirror. There was a woman, at least she looked like a woman, that had been seemingly trapped into the mirror itself. Upon closer inspection, Artemis realized that the mirror was not just any other ordinary mirror. The item seemed to have some sort of magic pouring through it, at least, in a latent fashion. It was water in nature, and Artemis found herself even more curious about the item itself now. It seems as though that Artemis had found the perfect mission for herself. A water related item, something that she would be the most adept at deciphering.[break][break]
One of the researchers broke away from the group and had turned himself towards Artemis. He seemed to be the leader of this group of white robed individuals, since his own robes had a much more ornate design to it, distinguishing him from the rest. There was also the fact that the man had the eyes of a veteran, hardened in gaze, yet soft in its colour and hue. However, at the moment, Artemis could see a cloud over the man’s demeanour. It seems this was puzzling them as much as it did Artemis, who had only just seen the item from a medium distance. She would surmise that there was something else that made this mirror more complicated than just trying to break the that bound the image of the woman in the glass. [break][break]
“Vice Captain,” The researcher would bow, recognizing Artemis, “It seems that it was fortuitous that you were the one that had accepted this mission.” He would gesture to the mirror now, “As you can see, we have recently been able to uncover this specific item from an underwater expedition. The Scholars that had found it had been unsure as to what it holds, until recently when we found ourselves staring at a woman from behind the mirror. We have determined that the woman must be trapped within the mirror itself, since from our readings, she has her own mana signature, which means that she is her own individual. However.” The researcher would pause now, glancing back the mirror before letting out a large sigh. It seems that the man was troubled with something, and it had been weighing heavily on him. “It has been a few days since we had started trying to extract the woman from the mirror. All of our efforts have failed, which is why you are here, I suppose.”[break][break]
Artemis would nod at the explanation. She supposed that it was the best case scenario. At least, from what she could see, there were no fatalities just yet. It was just a puzzle of some sort that needed to be solved. She then approached the mirror, and realized that the woman inside was now looking at her, gesturing at something to the right of the mirror. The Green Mantis Vice Captain would nod at the woman, before searching through the crevices of the mirror’s frame. The right side seemed to be emanating some sort of malevolent mana, more so than the rest of the mirror itself. Artemis knew that this might be a trap. It was a possibility, though she was more than capable of handling it. At least, she would like to think so.
Artemis would put her hand over the side, and start channeling her mana. It would not be enough to put significant drain on her, yet it was just enough to coax this specific malevolent presence to show itself. And she was right, as she was rewarded with a loud roar, and the malevolent mana bursting from the mirror’s frame. [break][break]
From the mirror, Artemis would find herself facing eight mana beasts of the same origin. The place was slowly flooding, though Artemis herself made no attempts to get away. Water was her element, and she was the most comfortable when she was near or around it. The sky had also started to turn sour, and within seconds, a thunderstorm came over the place. Everything was wet now, and the researchers had started to back up and take shelter. It seems that combat was not on the menu for them today, and Artemis could understand. If these maan beasts would be her quarry, then so be it. However, she knew that she needed to keep her mana connection stable and going to the mirror. Maybe it was the key to letting the woman free. A sacrifice of mana.[break][break]
The eight mana beasts, dark green in colour, and looked like blobs of water golems, reared their heads in unison. Artemis found herself bringing up her Grimoire and channeling her mana into the tome. They were definitely getting ready to attack, and she would be ready to respond in kind. While she had no immunity to water spells herself, she was at least capable of using the now watery terrain to her advantage.[break][break]
“War-maiden: Lady Sif.” [break][break]
Water from her grimoire quickly enveloped her body, transforming her very being into an angelic like figure. One the Vice Captain of the Green Mantises, Artemis now looked like a mythological figure straight out of children’s books. Her appearance looked that of a warrior angel, wings and armor all. [break][break]
It was then that all eight mana beasts charged their attack. They all seemed to be moving in unison, as though they were puppets being controlled by one person. However, Artemis could see just how devastating their attacks would be, especially since they all seemed to be properly coordinated. The Vice Captain of the Green Mantises found herself staring at a huge wall of water now, all eight of the mana beasts conjuring their own and linking them together to create a much longer wave. The sheer size could envelop half a city, and she knew that she could not let it do any significant damage at all. The town of Babel was behind her, after all. Though, there was the problem of trying to counter it. [break][break]
“Why not…” She would ponder, before shotting straight towards the large wave that was approaching her. As she flew, her grimoire followed her and she quickly cast another one of her spells. [break][break]
“Moonsong.”[break][break]
A bow made of water appeared in her hands, which was immediately place on her side as Artemis used the speed boost the spell gave her to move even faster. As she approached the wave that was approaching her in its slower speed, Artemis shot upwards, skimming the wave yet not letting it touch her. Her speed was too fast for the wave to actually envelop her in time as she shot past the wave’s highest peak, and then pausing. The mana beasts, all eight, had their hands out as they used their mana in pushing the large wave towards the town of Babel. [break][break]
The hand carrying the mirror reached out and held the bow, before using the free hand to pull on the strings. Two arrows appeared and was shot in tandem. Both arrows flew true, though did not target the mana beasts specifically, as it hit the ground on both ends of their line. A burst of water showered all eight of the mana beast, trapped in between the large area of effect attack that Artemis had just shot at them. It destroyed the mana beasts in one shot, and in an instant, the large wave of water became nothing more. Good thing too since the wave itself had been fairly close to the researchers that were now cowering between themselves.[break][break]
However, the ordeal did not stop there. [break][break]
A purple cloud, wispy in its form, could now be seen behind where the water mana beasts had been. Artemis would surmise that this was the puppet master behind those eight water creatures. She then brought the mirror up and showed the woman behind it the wispy form, and the woman behind the mirror wold vehemently point at it and making a death motion with her hand sliding on her neck. Artemis understood then. She needed to kill this cloud form to free the woman.[break][break]
With her superior speed, Artemis zoomed towards the wispy form of a man. It was careless, yet she knew that there were few others who could match her current speed. And she would be proven correct as the wispy form tried to reach out and grab onto her. Artemis, for her part, would dode to the left, effectively making the attack miss by a few inches. Without pausing, the Vice Captain of the Green Mantises turned around, and charged the wispy figure with her bow’s wings as a weapon. They were sharp, and Artemis herself had used the bow’s wings as a short spear. [break][break]
“Begone!”[break][break]
Artemis’ bow struck the wispy form straight through. But just before the cloud could dissipate, she heard it whisper in her ear: “Love…”[break][break]
It was then that the mirror in her hand glowed. Artemis would let the item go as it floated into the air. It would shatter as it reached its zenith, and the torrential rainfall stopped, turning into a light drizzle as sunlight started to pour through the dark clouds. A rainbow formed just behind the town of Babel, mesmerizing in sight. However, what caught Artemis is the woman who had been released from her prison. She would smile at Artemis, before dissipating into thin air with a gentle “Thank you…”[break][break]
Artemis would nod and smile, before turning to the researchers. It was a job well done.
