Artemis found herself wondering just what she was going to get herself into. [break][break]
Earlier this morning, Artemis had gotten a missive asking for a Magic Knight of a higher rank to do a specific mission concerning the Aristaeus Basin. Taking the chance of actually leaving the base, Artemis signed herself up and made her way across the Forsaken Region. While the region itself had a name that would make those who were not residents fear for their lives, for the most part, the area was safe. The Forsaken Region was so named because of a hierarchical issue. At least, that was what Artemis knew of it. To be honest, she herself found the charm of the Forsaken Region. While most of the residents are peasants and commoners, it was also the region that saw a great amount of trade. The people here worked their hands, and were mostly farmers and miners. This meant that the supplies were almost always sent to the Common Region and the Noble Region. Merchants and those who carried supplies would more often than not be found within the Forsaken Region, transporting the goods that were surplus into the Common Region to sell. It was how the people of the Forsaken Region were able to provide for themselves. There were less trades people who live here, and the folks were mostly agriculture based with their living. That in turn turned them quite hardy. Strong and hard working folks filled the Forsaken Region, and Artemis could respect that. [break][break]
The Aristaeus Basin was a different matter altogether. While the Forsaken Region, at least its towns, were populated with the common folk, the Aristaeus Basin was just a slightly different place in comparison. For the most part, the Aristaeus Basin was mostly deserted. There were few and far between small groups or clusters of families that lived within the place, but that was definitely not the case for the most part. The rumours that Artemis had heard about the place always sent shivers down her spine. It was theorized in the previous years that the Aristaeus Basin can be considered a Grand Magic Zone, especially with the strong mana that surrounds the whole area. It was considered quite a danger for those who wandered in without any rhyme nor reason, and did not have the necessary knowledge of the area to not get lost. The problem, however, was less man and more nature. With the rampant mana that leaked through the earth, it affected the way the vegetation grew, and how some of the animals developed. It had also affected the earth itself, causing geysers to appear, and some even spewing out crystals from the earth’s inner layers. A wild and untamed place, the area was more often than not avoided by even the most seasoned Magic Knight. Artemis herself had never had the opportunity to actually set foot into the specific area of the Forsaken Region, and she hoped to do so now under the authority of enacting a mission. [break][break]
“What is this place…” Artemis would whisper to herself as she made her way towards one of the entrance paths that had been a part of the instructions on the mission itself. From what she could gather beforehand, there was a family that had kept their homes within the Aristaeus Basin. It was a comely home, and they did not live too far into the Aristaeus Basin’s borders. The dangers were just too much for a lone family to survive, and therefore they made sure to be as close to the borders as possible. More than likely, it was what had kept the family alive. The vegetation within the Aristaeus Basin was just too wild and very unpredictable for anybody, and the trepidation that Artemis felt as she got closer to the Basin itself was a sign that not everything was well. Her latent mana sensing abilities would start to feel the whole of the Aristaeus Basin come to life. Left, right, and centre, everything felt alive. It was a whole other worldly experience for a sensory mage to be in this area. She would not deign to try out her Ki sensing in this place. She was sure that it would go haywire as well, since the plants and the trees might also have life energies surrounding them, just because of how thick the mana was in the Basin. She now understood why most of every Magic Knight who had been to this place would actually describe it as some sort of Grand Magic Zone. It gave off the same feeling as the Volcanic Grand Magic Zone. [break][break]
Sighing to herself, Artemis would finally take her first few steps into the Aristaeus Basin. There were no signs or anything like that in particular. Instead, the path that she had been pointed to had been trodden almost every single day, it seems like. The path held no vegetation, which usually meant that it was constantly used. The plants that had encroached on either side were seemingly trimmed to not reach in, making the path almost looking like it was lined by a hedge. Nature never made straight lines, which led Artemis to believe this this was all man made. It seems that the people who had made this path were at least very diligent. There were a few reasons as to why, though Artemis would assume that it was because of the fear that the Aristaeus Basin’s latent magic would quickly overgrow through the path and leave the people living within stuck and unable to leave. It was a possibility, something that Artemis started to believe in more as she felt the trees around her move ever so gently. It was hard for her to discern mana beasts and the trees themselves unless they moved, and Artemis quickly found herself jerking her head towards any sort of movement. She was more wary now, though she kept her cool. She was hoping to reach the house right about now, though all she saw on the path ahead was more trees and rocky ground.
Finally, however, she saw something from a distance.[break][break]
Artemis saw a speck at first. It was unclear whether it had been a structure or a tree in the middle of the path itself. With the way this forest seemed to be, Artemis would not be surprised if random trees started growing in the middle of paths. The mana here was overflowing, and it caused some anomalies that might be weird to those who have not seen how mana affects nature itself. There was a reason why the Aristaeus Basin was called a pseudo Grand Magic Zone, after all. Even Artemis would be hard pressed to describe it otherwise. As she was now enveloped by the forest even more. Compared to when she had just been outside observing, she could now fully understand just how strong the mana around her was. It swirled around her, almost catching her off guard during her first few steps in to the place. It would continually assault her senses, yet she made sure to keep her task and goal in mind instead. Artemis had neve gone to the Volcanic Grand Magic Zone just yet, though after this, she was curious as to how that place would compare to this one. She also knew that there were a few higher tiered Magic Knights who went there for training, most notably those from the Crimson Lions Magic Squad. She did not know just how those in that squad could handle long periods in a Grand Magic Zone, though she supposed there was a reason why they were considered as one of the strongest Magic Knights Squads in the Clover Kingdom. [break][break]
“Miss! Miss!” There was a woman now, portly in her body size, yet she seemed to have a kind face. Artemis would describe her as someone she would see running an inn, motherly in her demeanour, though seemed to be in quite a distress. “Miss! Miss! Over here!” The woman was now waving at her urgently, and Artemis could only quicken her pace as she made her way to the woman. From the way she was dressed, Artemis would gather that the woman herself was a commoner or a peasant, though of a much more simpler means than those who might live in the towns of the Forsaken Region. Artemis was not surprised. Nobody with good means would want to live here. Of course, there were the eccentrics, yet those were few and far between. “Miss! Hurry please!” The woman would take a look back towards what seemed to be a house, before running back to it without even looking back towards the approaching Artemis. That was the first sign that there was something truly wrong, and it was not just a panicked woman. Even then, Artemis herself would not jump into the fray without making her own assessment. How could she? Not an inexperienced Magic Knight, Artemis knew that it was unwise to try and be the hero. Her duty as a Magic Knight was the protection of the Clover Kingdom and of its citizens. That did not mean that she needed to be suicidal. A careful approach was required for any type of mission, especially with higher ranked ones like these.[break][break]
Arriving just in front of the house, Artemis would first marvel just how it was intricately made. The house looked as though it was a part of some sort of fairy tale. From what she could gather, it was a simple two story house. Yet, the materials used to build the house seemed to have been taken from the forest all around them. That meant that the house seemed more like a part of the forest than it was a house itself. The mana that had been a part of the woodlands extended to the processed materials. The house itself had started to look like a tree, with branches poking out of random wooden walls, while the roof itself seemed to have grown to hold a small tree top. All in all, the house itself looked to have been built inside a tree, instead of the house being built by materials using a tree. It was a curious sight, and something that told Artemis that the people who built it did not think about the ramifications of using mana infused trees as part of their building materials. Well, heavily mana infused materials, more than anything. [break][break]
“Miss! Please, you have the help us out!” The woman was now looking at Artemis with pleading eyes. “We sent a message to the local office about our problem, and they said they were going to send Magic Knights! It’s been horrible, ma’am, horrible…” The woman would trail off, before Artemis could ask her to calm down. [break][break]
“It must be something serious.” Artemis would nod, “Please, tell me more.” She would ask. It would do them no good if she just rushed into the situation. Truly, any type of situation inside the Aristaeus Basin was something that should be dealt with caution.[break][break]
“Our garden...tomatoes...carrots…” The old woman would mutter, before a masculine voice was heard from behind the house. It was a loud scream, and jolted the old woman as her eyes immediately widened. “My husband! Please! You have to help him!” The old woman pleaded, before she ran around the house towards the back of the structure. From what Artemis could gather, plants were involved. And from the screams, she would assume that there was some sort of an attack by plants? It sounded quite ludicrous, though she would not discount it. After all, the Aristaeus Basin was a place with heavy mana influence on the ground itself.
Artemis would make her way around the house to find an older gentleman fighting back what seemed to be tomatoes? At least, they looked like tomatoes, with appendages and an actual jaw. The old man was fighting bravely, with his farming tools and his grimoire out. However, he had been caught unaware as one of the tomatoes lashed out and grabbed the man by his ankle, dangling him upside down. Without hesitation then, Artemis sprung into action.[break][break]
With her grimoire out, the Vice Captain of the Green Mantis was quickly on the move. She spared only a glance at the wife, who was now literally screaming in fear. Artemis had half the mind to tell the women to quiet down, but she knew it would do her no good. The woman was probably in shock now, and there was nothing else to do but to let her settle for a moment. Especially since if Artemis did not do anything at the moment, then the man who was caught by the tomato would most likely die.[break][break] “War-maiden: Lady Sif.”[break][break]
Water started to coalesce around her, enveloping her body as the transformation magic worked its, well, magic. Artemis, once white haired with a touch of blonde, now turned into an angelic warrior that had armor and a pair of white feathered wings on her back. It was a usual spell for her to use now, and certainly gave her the edge in battle. The speed that she was now augmented with gave her the ability to quickly get to the old man as he was just about to get gobbled up by the tomato plant. [break][break]
“Scylla.”[break][break]
Two swords made of water appeared in Artemis’ hand. Her grimoire was still alight, though was now just lazily following her, keeping up with her speed as she finally finished casting her second spell. Just in time as well, as Artemis quickly pivoted to the left to avoid the tomato trying to lash out at her as well, before using her Scylla sword to cut the appendage of the tomato, and the subsequently driving her other Scylla sword towards its body, ending its sentience as the old man fell to the ground with a soft thud. He had not been too high, and would only suffer minor bruising from it.[break][break]
“Run.” Artemis would urge the now trembling couple, before they bolted out of the backyard. She did not need anybody to look after during this fight. From what she could sense, there were more than just these tomatoes that seemed to now realize that there someone who could actually challenge them. These garden delicacies had been toying with the old man previously, but they knew now to take Artemis seriously. [break][break]
Artemis would calmly observe the tomatoes, before using her speed to rush towards them. They had all been kind of grouped up, most likely taking turns at attacking the poor old man. Once numbering six, now they were down to five. However, that did not mean that they were not dangerous. Artemis knew that their appendages and jaws were still a danger even to her, and so she needed to defeat them en masse. She was outnumbered, after all. An area of effect spell would do.[break][break]
While the tomatoes seemed to have some sort of extra boost to their speed, Artemis was faster. She weaved through the group of tomatoes, with some of them almost catching her with glancing blows, but her Ki senses had been enough to warn her and she had been able to track the attacks and evade them as best as she could. She was circling them in making sure that they were all grouped up enough. Artemis did not want this attack to go in vain, after all.[break][break]
After being satisfies that they were close enough together, Artemis flew upwards instead. She had weaving in and out of the tomatoes trying to lead them close together only for one reason. With a thrust, Artemis sent both of her Scylla sword downwards. The sword would hit the ground and explode into a shower of water needles, piercing all the tomatoes and causing them to explode unceremoniously. All around the garden, the gunk of tomatoes could be seen. It was an interesting sight, though she knew that the cleanup would be horrid.[break][break]
It was then that she felt another mana source. Well, more than just one, and rather numbered about four. Artemis saw them too, poking their heads above ground. They looked like carrots, though they seemed to be anything but. The carrots, for some reason, looked like centipedes, and had tentacle like appendages. Artemis would watch them peek out, before burrowing down underground. It seems that her area of effect spell had distrubed the earth enough to catch these mana beasts’ attention.[break][break]
“If you are all going to hide underground, then I will make sure there is no underground for you to hide in!”[break][break]
Artemis would have her grimoire once more, pouring her mana into it as it flipped towards the spell that she had been meaning to use. It was a new spell, only learned recently with the help of her adventures throughout the Clover Kingdom. A water spell that felt like more in tune with her Somerset bloodline.[break][break]
“Oceania!”[break][break]
The ground started to turn to water. It was quick, and it was painless. The whole garden’s land became a huge ocean, with water churning back and forth. Artemis would watch as the carrot mana beasts would be overwhelmed by the changed terrain, and were quickly churned to pieces by her spell. With the strength of the spell was not as strong as her Scylla sword, it was enough to break the carrots down into almost nothing.[break][break]
Artemis would cut off the spell, before slowly landing into the now disturbed earth. All the mana beasts around would be taken care of, and she was at least confident enough to not be alarmed anymore. She would look at the cowering couple before motioning for them to come forward.[break][break]
“Please don’t plant anything in the Aristaeus Basin. The wild mana here can be unpredictable. And truly, those mana beasts were quite strong.” She would sigh, “Stronger than most of the more experience Magic Knights. It was a good thing it was me who had taken the mission.” [break][break]
Artemis would then turn towards the exit, “I would also suggest moving out. The explosion of mana from myself and the mana beast might have attracted attention from unsavory characters inside the Basin.” With that she would leave to report the success of the mission.
Name of Spell: War-maiden: Lady Sif[break] Elemental Type: Water[break] Rank & Spell Type: Grand | Physical Reinforcement & Transformation[break] Range & Speed: Self | 40 m/s[break] Mana Cost: 50 | 25[break] Stats Effected: +30 m/s[break] Applicable Perks: Full Blitz, Predator's Mutation[break] Description: Calling upon the mythological war-maidens, Artemis conjures water and surrounds her whole body, transforming her into the visage of an mythological warrior. Her whole appearance changes, hair turning into fully blonde, her clothes replaced by warrior-garb made of silk and iron, with the most prominent feature of the transformation being the two feather wings on her back. This transformation allows Artemis flight, and the combination of both Physical Reinforcement to the Transformation allows her to move at a faster speed than normal. Her flight speed is at-rank 40 m/s following Transformation rules. Growing 35 inches in size, Artemis is able to carry at maximum 5 people on her wings and back, though why she would do that, she did not know. The spell allows Artemis to weave in and out of combat, unhindered by ground speed. [break]
Name of Spell: Scylla[break] Elemental Type: Water[break] Rank & Spell Type: Grand | Attack Creation & Sensory (Illusion)[break] Range & Speed: 150 meters | 85 m/s | 110 m AOE[break] Mana Cost: 50 | 25[break] Stats Effected: Power +12, Blinds, -12 Sensory[break] Applicable Perks: Area of Triumph, Battle Knight, Master Illusionist, Quick Shot, Apex Predator[break] Description: Scylla is a spell that conjures and manipulates water, turning them into swords that surround Artemis. The swords are very sharp, and are very deadly. Through ammo rules, Artemis usually creates more than one, with the limit based on the amount of control she has. While she can use the swords in a physical fight, she oftentimes manipulates the swords with her mana, using it to fight enemies from afar. If she chooses to, Artemis can make a sword explode in a shower of pin-sized needles, causing an AOE effect. At first hit, opponents are blinded by the water that hits their eyes. The blind effect only happens once per opponent. Scylla is coated with an illusion, making them very hard to see, hear, and smell, and sense with mana. Finally, they are able to home in on their intended target because of the user's Sensory. Those hit by the spell will also have their sensory debuffed, following on debuff rules.[break]
Name of Spell: Oceania[break] Elemental Type: Water[break] Rank & Spell Type: Grand | Transformation & Sensory[break] Range & Speed: 150 meters | 115 m AOE[break] Mana Cost: 50 | 25[break] Stats Effected: Sensory -12, -20 m/s[break] Applicable Perks: Area of Triumph, Master Illusionist[break] Description: Channeling her mana around her, or in a specific area around her, Artemis turned the terrain into a large turbulent ocean. The churning waves would deal Senior level damage to those caught in it, and will continue to do so as long as one is caught in it. The speed debuff is only applied on the first instance of contact. While the turbulent ocean changes the landscape, Artemis keeps a small amount of land for her and her teammates. Those within the area of effect are also caught in an illusion where they see creatures of the deep slowly boxing them into a small area, tricking sight, hearing, and smell, and mana sensing, hiding Artemis and her allies, using ammo rules for her allies. The creatures' attacks are mimicked by the damage done by the churning waves. [break]
