Artemis made her way into the town of Hapshass. It had been quite a bit now since she had been here. The last time had been when she had taken Lydia out and about, exploring the town that she had grown up in. While the place was quite quiet early in the morning, Artemis found herself feeling just a bit overwhelmed just looking at all the buildings that were now starting to open their blinders. The town of Hapshass was a place where everyone woke up early, and the scent of burning stoves and bakeries were already flooding the air. And while there were few people walking around the place, there was still a looming presence that seemed to darken the alleys. She assumed that this was because of the recent happenings in and around town. There had been rumours of a dark and crazy old mage that had passed through town recently, and had taken up residence somewhere away from the town proper. It had scared the townspeople of Hapshass, and they had recently sent a request to the Magic Knights to deal with the problem. Though, Artemis found herself wondering what the fanfare was all about. To have a crazy old mage living in the outskirts of town was not something that was a problem. The Clover Kingdom was a mostly free state, and there was nothing illegal about setting up shop somewhere on the outskirts of town, wanting to be left alone, after all. However, the doom and gloom of the town itself spoke many words that filled the blanks for Artemis. She had taken this job because she felt obligated to help the town that had essentially raised her, yet what she might here might be more of a problem than what she had first thought it had been.[break][break]
The likely, and most probable category for this mission was vagrancy. It had been a problem ever since the aftermath of the Diamond Wars. While the Diamond Kingdom was essentially still standing, there had been rampant poverty all around the border towns of the Clover Kingdom and the Diamond Kingdom. There had been a few runaway from the other side, seeking refuge within the Clover Kingdom under the guise that they were Clover Kingdom citizens. It was easy to pass off, after all. The border, while maintained properly, had a few holes that Artemis knew were exploited. While the Green Mantis Magic Knights Squad had been slowly starting to be more diligent of their watch, especially now that Artemis had taken the reins as the Vice Captain, it was not all sunshine and roses. Artemis knew that there were holes within the borders of the Clover Kingdom, and she knew that it was almost impossible to cover them all. Which was why vagrancy cases had soared, and there was talk of criminality rising as well, especially within the Common Region. The Forsaken Region was usually forgotten, and therefore nobody cared to take any type of statistics for those towns within that region. Though Artemis knew that there was definitely an increase in criminal activity, she was unsure why a Magic Knight had been called into this specific one. The issue seemed so simple. [break][break]
“Lady Artemis! Lady Artemis! Thank goodness you have arrived! The town council has been expecting a Magic Knight contingent to show up for the request, yet we did not know that you were the one that was sent!”[break][break]
Artemis looked towards the young man that had been huffing and puffing. He seemed to be from the town council itself, one of the lesser noble family members whom she had had interactions with previously. The Somerset Family, after all, was one of the most prominent families here in this specific town. Fishing was the industry, and Artemis and her family were the Kings and Queens of the trade. She watch the young man carefully, taking into account the fact that she was mentioned by name. Artemis supposed that becoming Vice Captain propelled her family’s position, which possibly helped her mother wrench more support for the family. She had never truly been addressed as Lady Artemis previously, though it seems as though that she had finally earned the respect of the lesser nobility around Hapshass, having shed her delinquent noblewoman pseudo title. It only told Artemis just how easy it is for one’s reputation to change overnight. [break][break]
“I’m sorry, Lady Artemis. I was sent here by the town council themselves. I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is Arnault Ethien, a servant of the House of Prima. My lord has requested that you make your way to the town council hall as soon as you can, so that they might explain the situation better.”[break][break]
Artemis nodded. “I am guessing they are still partaking in their small council in the middle of the town itself? The large building with the spire?” She asked. It had been awhile since she had been here in Hapshass on proper business, after all. Having her mother take care of the household and the family business was something she knew she needed to do. Her mother was a good woman, smart and crafty, and did not like to be idle.. And she was a bit surprised that the woman had not taken a seat within the town’s council at all. Especially now that her father was dead and gone, her mother had started to blossom once more. Once a formidable woman, the Somerset patriarch had squashed down her mother’s own dreams and goals. Artemis had wanted to see her mother happy once more, and the past few years since her father's death had done wonders for her mother. [break][break]
“Yes, Lady Artemis. The building had not moved at all in the past few years, though you might find yourself lost as a couple of construction projects have been commissioned by your own mother, the Dowager Somerset. Some streets have been blockaded for widening, and others are closed down for renovation. A charity donation for better housing by the Somerset Estate, as you might know.”[break][break]
The servant of the Prima Household bowed low, which she supposed was out of gratitude. Artemis would hide a smile. It seems her mother was up to her nefarious schemes once again.[break][break]
“Lead the way to the town council, then.” Artemis would nod now to the young man, who fixed his cap and nodded vigorously.[break][break]
The walk towards the town council’s building was less than bumpy than usual. With her escort leading the way, Artemis found herself letting herself bask in the morning glow of the rising sun. While Hapshass was a port town, and its town’s port facing towards the East, the sun really did not stream through the city until mid day. This was due to the fact that the sun itself was blocked by the countless buildings that had popped up recently around the whole town’s centre. Two to three stories high, these new buildings had replaced the old buildings that used to be what made up the fishing port town. Larger and more sturdy, these new buildings blocked the sun from the streets, giving it a nice shade that was fantastic during the summertime. [break][break]
“Just over there, Lady Artemis! The large building just by that crossroads. The spire is gone now, and has been replaced by a small tower. The town council should be expecting you as you head in.”[break][break]
The servant then bowed once more.[break][break]
“I need to run some more errands for my master. Please, help the town rid of this problem. It is a plague that has taken too many lives already.”[break][break]
Artemis nodded, before making her way towards the office. The walk was short, and as she opened the door, she was greeted by loud shouting. It seems that the town council has convened their meeting already, and they were definitely not happy about something. Artemis drew closer towards voices just on the second floor, and found herself staring at a room of what seemed to be the guards of the town, shouting against a group of older men and women in golden chairs on a small podium. It seems to be a power play interaction between the guards and the council. [break][break]
“There is nothing we can do! The men and women we have sent there had come back either dead or dying! We do not have the means nor the people to spare, even if we send a whole group of our town guards. Do you want the town of Hapshass to lose most of its town guards in one night? Are you all bleeding mad? Tell you what, why don’t you all go instead, and face that mad old wizard and his horrifying creations, huh? Why don’t you do that instead of asking young men and women to sacrifice their lives for your safety! You all sit there in your gilded chairs, uncaring, and heartless. Why don’t you all, instead, do something about this?”[break][break]
The critique was harsh, yet justifiable. The town council seemed to be unwilling to wait, and had been pressuring the town guards to do something about the mess. Artemis herself stepped forward then, having heard enough.[break][break]
“Cease these arguments.” Artemis announced, walking into the room. “The Magic Knights have taken on this matter. However, we have not been briefed properly as to what we might be expecting out of this.” She would point towards the town guards, “These men and women seemed to have been scared of something. Lives were lost.” She shook her head now, “Tell me what I am up against, and I shall see to it that our town does not need to worry about any more dangers.” [break][break]
Artemis stressed the fact that Hapshass was her town as well. She grew up here, after all, and her family held their estates her as well. As long as the town of Hapshass flourished, so did the Somersets. [break][break]
“Vice Captain Somerset, thank you for answering the call. We had sent word to the Magic Knights a week prior, but it seems that everything got tied up. However, we are glad that you are here.”[break][break]
One of the councilmen started, before gesturing towards the window that overlooked outside the town itself.[break][break]
“The town of Hapshass has been plagued by a crazy old mage, whose creations have been terrorizing the outskirts of the town itself. Citizens. Passers-by. Travellers. Merchants. Nobody is safe from its horrid creations. Nobody at all…”[break][break]
Artemis listened, before turning towards the guards of the town. She stared at them for just a moment, before asking, “Where is the direction of this crazy old mage? By the day is out, I will make sure that this old crazy mage will not be a problem any longer.”[break][break]
“East. In the forest.”[break][break]
Without another word, the Vice Captain of the Green Mantis made her way outside of the building once more. She grabbed her grimoire from the satchel that it was held it on her hip. Pouring mana into the tome, she found herself looking for the proper spell. There was one that she had not been able to use yet at all, and she found herself wanting to finally use it. It was the one that she had trained alongside Lydia, and she knew that this might just be the best moment to use it. Especially since she did promise a swift ending to this menace.[break][break] “Valkyrie: Freyja.”[break][break]
Water coalesced around her as the transformation spell took affect. She found herself growing in height, and her back sprouting three sets of wings. An angel. A divine messenger. A warrior of light. Artemis lifted her hand and felt the water settle in as the transformation spell finally settled. But, that was not all.[break][break]
“Moonsong.”[break][break]
Her bow appeared in her hand. She was expecting a fight after all. The bow would further augment her speed, while also giving her a weapon that she knew she would need. This crazy old mage, as he was being called, seemed to not be too crazy after all. Less a deviant and possibly a murderer, Artemis knew she had to be prepared. A fight was a fight, and Artemis was known to not hold back.[break][break]
And with that, she ascended into the sky and zipped towards the forest.
Name of Spell: Valkyrie: Freyja[break] Elemental Type: Water[break] Rank & Spell Type: Archmage | Physical Reinforcement & Transformation[break] Range & Speed: Self | 80 m/s[break] Mana Cost: 80 | 40[break] Stats Effected: +50 m/s[break] Applicable Perks: Full Blitz, Predator's Mutation[break] Description: Calling upon the deities of old, Artemis conjures water and surrounds her whole body, transforming her into the visage of an ancient goddess. Her whole appearance changes, hair turning into auburn, her clothes replaced by warrior-garb made of silk and gold, which gives her an ethereal look, with the most prominent feature of the transformation being the feather wings on her back. This transformation allows Artemis flight, and the combination of both Physical Reinforcement to the Transformation allows her to move at a faster speed than normal. Her flight speed is at-rank 80 m/s following Transformation rules. Growing 50 inches in size, Artemis is able to carry at maximum 15 people on her wings and back, though why she would do that, she did not know. The spell allows Artemis to weave in and out of combat, unhindered by ground speed. [break]
Name of Spell: Moonsong[break] Elemental Type: Water[break] Rank & Spell Type: Grand | Attack Creation & Physical Reinforcement[break] Range & Speed: 150 meters | 85 m/s | 115 m AOE[break] Mana Cost: 50 | 25[break] Stats Effected: +30 m/s, Blinds[break] Applicable Perks: Area of Triumph, Quick Shot, Full Blitz, Apex Predator[break] Description: A manifestation of a stronger mana, the bow is made to be the successor in power and speed of Aphrodite. The bow itself is made with water, though its wings are as sharp as a sword's blade. The bow is used in long ranged combat, the wings of the bow, however, can be used as pseudo blades. A manifestation of Artemis' mana, the string only shows when she makes a "pull-back" motion of drawing and aiming. This makes the bow into a pseudo double-bladed short spear when needed for close quarter combat. The bow itself can shoot more than one arrow, following ammo rules. The arrows can either pierce through enemies, or be used as an AOE attack by letting it burst in a shower of sharp dagger like water droplets, causing Grand level damage. At first hit, opponents are blinded by the water that hits their eyes. The blind effect only happens once per opponent. The bow also increases the speed of the user.[break]
The flight was uneventful, save for the fact that the common people that saw her gazed at her with curiosity. She did not look like Artemis Somerset, Vice Captain of the Green Mantis, and Lady of House Somerset any longer. Her visage had changed from one of a mortal, to a mythological figure, something that was only read in story books. A product of a spell of such a high caliber.[break][break] “Curious.”[break][break]
Artemis slowed her flight as she weaved through the forest outside of the town of Hapshass. The place had been a refuge for her when she had been a young woman. The forest was not as dangerous as most of the other places within the Clover Kingdom. However, it was one of the few places where mana beasts can be expected to be lurking in. The area closest to the town of Hapshass was a safe zone, however. Especially since it contained the main road that led in and out of the town. This place was kept in peace by the town’s guard, and for the most part, saw little problems. There was also the fact that the wide rivers that fed from the sea also snaked around these forests, which meant that there was more than just foot traffic. For the forest to be this quiet meant that something was off. Especially when she herself could not hear any wildlife what so ever.[break][break]
As she continued her flight, she found herself extending her natural sensory. She found herself looking around using her mana and Ki senses, trying to map out the area as much as she could without the use of a spell. This was when she finally found the anomaly. [break][break]
“Mana beasts.” Artemis would whisper to herself. “This close? And this many?” She would ready her Moonsong bow as she slowed her approach even more. It would be best if she did not alert these beasts too early. A sneak attack, after all, was one of the better strategies when one does not know the true capabilities of their enemies. Artemis continued to weave through the trees, before finally settling down on one of the branches that was just around the edge of what seemed to be a small clearing. Unkept, and very much overgrown with vegetation, this small clearing seemed to have once been fairly well trimmed. The even growth of the vegetation suggests abandonment, yet, this was where she found the mana beasts that she had been able to sense. Therefore, the place must not be as abandoned as it seemed to be. After all, there were ten ferocious beasts that were either patrolling the perimeter, or were sleeping. [break][break]
“What in the Great Spirits…” As Artemis finally saw the creatures in full, she realized that these mana beasts were more than just the regular type. They had the hind legs of a goat, the front legs of a lion, dragon wings and the heads and faces of all three creatures combined. They were an amalgamation of these beings, experimented upon, and were created most possibly for their pure destructive nature. Artemis would watch as they snarled at each other, yet did not visibly fight one another. She supposed that even between man made mana beasts, there was some shape or form of a camaraderie. [break][break]
“So this was what this mage was doing all this time.” Artemis cursed under her breath. It reminded her of the Eldritch Home once again. This was what the Coral Peacocks Magic Knights were doing there, experimenting on life itself. No, this cannot go on, and Artemis was going to make sure that these creatures would be put out of their misery.[break][break]
It was then that she made her move.[break][break]
With her Moonsong bow, Artemis pulled back and shot two arrows straight into a small crowd of these mana beasts. They were struck without any sort of resistance, with the arrows exploding into small shards of water as they pierced the closest of the mana beasts into oblivion. The area of effect attack took out four of the ten mana beasts she counted. A good chunk, though it would alert the mana beasts of her existence now.[break][break]
“Four down, six to go.”[break][break]
Instead of using her bow, Artemis held onto the weapon as she flew down from her perch and straight towards the six remaining mana beasts. They had all crowded now, turning their attentions towards the Magic Knight that had killed four of their brethren. They were unhappy, and were snarling at her. She paid it no mind, and charged straight into the fray.[break][break]
Artemis supposed this was where she made a mistake. She had assumed incorrectly that these mana beasts were physical attackers by nature. After all, they looked to be jacked up animals whose claws and jaws could do serious damage. What she had not put into the equation was the fact that these mana beasts were also capable of sending out ranged attacks. She would pay the price for this wrong assumption as she quickly dodged out of the way of four different streams of fire. These four streams would try to catch her, yet her superior speed would allow her to quickly dodge out of the way, making her way upwards instead. As she reached a zenith, she enacted the second part of her plan. She would propel herself downwards towards the ground, weaving in between the now six different streams of fire being sent towards her. She was still faster, and therefore able to dodge these attacks. However, she was going to make sure that these attacks will not be other her any longer.[break][break]
Artemis landed straight down, causing a small quake around the epicentre as she punched one of the mana beasts straight through its head, pinning it down as she cast her next spell.[break][break]
“Black Dawn.”[break][break]
Water appeared in small droplets around the area. It covered most, if not all of the clearing as the spell took effect on the mana beasts. Instead of sending fire her way, the mana beasts, all six, even the one pinned under her fists, started to yelp out and gasp for air. With the spell active, those caught in it save the caster would experience not only an illusion, but also the water drowning them by attacking their lungs. This effectively disabled the mana beasts’ fire based attacks, and one by one, they all slowly succumbed to the spell’s attack and offensive nature. [break][break]
“Death by drowning, how fitting for such fire based mana beasts,” Artemis would comment as she watched the last one fall prey to her area of effect attack. With all ten of the mana beasts dead, Artemis found herself across a crazed old man who was now shouting into the high heavens. He seemed to have just exited the large and lone towards that stood in the middle of the clearing. Artemis supposed that this was his doing.[break][break]
“HOW COULD YOU?! THOSE WERE MY CREATIONS! MY BABIES! THEY WERE THE FUTURE OF THE CLOVER KINGDOM, THE DEFENSES THAT WE NEED TO COMBAT THE DIAMOND KINGDOM AND THEIR NEXT INVASION! I WILL KILL YOU FOR THIS!!”[break][break]
Artemis found herself feeling sorry for this mad man, yet could not find it within herself to forgive him. As she looked around, she found herself staring at corpses upon corpses of people. Most likely these were either travelers whom had been hunted by these creatures, or they were the town guards who were sent to investigate the disturbance. Seeing all of these murdered individuals, she knew what she must do. To avenge the fallen. To bring justice to those who deserved it. This crazy old man must be stopped at all cost. If not here, then he might do it somewhere if left unchecked. [break][break] “I WILL KILL YOU!!”[break][break]
The old crazy man ran towards Artemis, his grimoire in hand as he sent a wave of shadows at her. She would watch the spell make their way towards her, before flying upwards once more. The speed at which she was going was too much for the old crazy man, and his instincts were dulled. Even then, there were only a few who could truly be able to react as fast as Artemis’ speed right now. Flying at one hundred and sixty meters per second, Artemis flew straight down and sent a punch towards the crazy old man, who did not have enough time to actually block the attack. The punch would send the old crazy man down on the ground, fatally wounded.[break][break]
“Life is not something you should trifle with. It is the domain of the gods, of the Great Spirits.” She glared at the old crazy man, her ire was rolling off of her. Yet, before she could say or do anything, the old crazy man succumbed to his injuries.[break][break]
Artemis sighed, looking towards the town of Hapshass.[break][break]
