It wasn't as if he wasn't aware of the importance of Kiten. It wasn't as if he wasn't aware of the significance this position held. But truthfully, he also just didn't want to be on this mission. Guard duty? What could he even do if the Diamond Kingdom decided to invade? There was already an expectation of him to do something in case Spade did something just by nature of being a Ravencrest and his cousin being the queen of the Carrion Kingdom. And yet, one of his seniors in the Silver Eagles had tasked him with this; specifically, guard duty at night.
Michail had shown up into Kiten a bit earlier than what was required of him. He was largely unfamiliar with the layout of the town and surveying it was in his own best interests. Scanning the defenses of the town, entry and exit points, any possible beacon in case of things went wrong; these were just a few of the things he did upon showing up in the mantle of the proud Silver Eagles before the sun could even set.
To his understanding, he wasn't so much "selected" as Kiten usually did as much as it was the Magic Knights had spoken with Kiten representatives, and due to the increased presence and actions of Daemons, it was decided that having the presence of a Magic Knight was in the best interest, squads rotating out every so often.
Ultimately, even the commoners knew that the Magic Knights were some of the best of the best within the kingdom; it was not in their best interest to completely pretend as though they didn't exist, but many still likely held them in contempt.
At roughly midnight, it was time for him to move out and meet up at the Eastern Gate. The more eccentric of the Ravencrest family had not yet been informed of whom he would be patrolling the grounds with, but he didn't really care one way or another. Likely, just another commoner.
Per usual, his wild and dual-colored hair was kept in the usual spiked yet layered manner, with his bangs coming down on the sides of his face; though, the left was longer than the right, giving him an asymmetrical look. His mantle was neatly layered over his pale golden wardrobe, and those crimson eyes of his expressed a rather new emotion on his face:
uncertainty.
It wasn't a super obvious sighting, of course. Michail might not have been a champion of poker faces, but he was born into nobility; wearing one's insecurities on your sleeve when you were not on your own or around members of your own family was disgraceful. To that end, it wasn't obvious, at least. But if things did go wrong, was he really strong enough to make a difference? Truthfully, he wouldn't be surprised if this mission was tasked on him to just conveniently get rid of him.
...but it was at least a Junior mission. Surely it couldn't be that rough.
Genesis tugged at her laces, making sure her outfit was nice and snug against her body. Her lithe frame moved smoothly underneath her skin tight top and pants. It was late in the evening, when any respectable soul would be settling down and into bed. But not her. Not this shadow mage. She shrugged on her crop top jacket and strapped on her trusty knives to her thighs. As per usual, everything she wore was black, and the only thing colorful on her person was her fiery crimson hair. There. She was ready. Ready for the night out, and no, it was not a date.
Stepping outside her door, she breathed in the chilly night air. The cold never bothered her, not even in the dead of winter. Adrenaline was enough to warm her, and she would likely get that tonight, especially when there have been reports of suspicious activities around the city walls. This was not the first time she had been assigned a city watch shift, but it was the first time it was a midnight shift. She supposed that she would not be the only one keeping watching, but even if she was going solo, she would be more than fine with that. For most people, night patrol meant long hours shuffling through the dark and struggling to keep oneself awake. But her? She lived and breathed twilight.
Gen swiftly made her way over to the city gates, where she would meet with the city guard and start her rounds. The old man was sitting in his little box, peering through half-closed eyes and with the usual sputtering candles and empty bottles strewn about his desk. Upon catching her shadowy figure, he started a little, then relaxed. He nodded briefly at her, acknowledging her presence and purpose before promptly waving her off. No words were needed. If anything came up, she would deal with it. Besides, she came dressed like she was ready to fight.
Then she caught sight of her partner for the night.
Oh.
A Magic Knight.
And a Silver Eagle one at that.
The redhead wrinkled her nose, already assuming the worst. Nobles and their lax lifestyles. He even smelled like a noble. Those gold-hued clothes screamed of a lavish household. She was not the only one who loathed the high and haughty squad, but if this knight did not fall asleep on duty, she would count that as a plus.
Honestly, it was more of those people's status and arrogance that irked her. For all the finery and scraping and respect they get, do they actually have the power to back up their prestigious names? She has yet to fight an actual noble—perhaps tonight would be her chance. Who knew? Maybe he would give her a reason to draw her knives tonight. With another backwards glance, she sauntered outside the city walls, intent on starting her nightly rounds regardless of whether the knight followed or not.
It didn't seem that Michail would need to be doing too much more waiting. He might have had no ability to detect mana whatsoever, but he did have a sharp pair of eyes, ears, and a good nose to know that someone was coming. Their footsteps weren't loud, but it was difficult to with a perfect silence on the path here.
The Ravencrest hadn't faced his partner yet. He could tell based on the momentary pause that they were surprised to see a Magic Knight present here. And he also knew that there was no reason for anyone else to show up at this specific spot at this specific time other than whoever he was partnered with.
Michail said nothing, however, even as he knew he was being stared at momentarily. Instead, he just let out a soft sigh, musing on how he wanted to do this. Right now, he was officially representing the Silver Eagles in addition to his usual matter of being a Ravencrest.
Turning around, Michail was about to introduce himself when he caught notice of... two... large... partially exposed...
eyes.
Immediately forcing his gaze to the redhead's face, Michail forced his gaze upon the grey eyes of the woman. "A pleasure to meet you," he said. "I'm Michail Ravencrest. And you a-"
Before he could even get some more words in, the woman was already moving out past the gate and towards the outpost ahead. Michail chased after, but...
Tensing up when he took notice of how her pants fit her body. Had she no shame, strutting around like that? Didn't she know better? A lady should dress modestly! He didn't mean dresses and the sort. But to expose this much... it didn't leave too much to the imagination. Of which, his was most certainly hard at work.
This was going to be difficult. Incredibly so. It was possible to finish the mission... just as long as he wasn't too tempted.
Clearing his throat once he caught up, he couldn't even bring himself to chastise her. Though, he did not look her way. It was too tempting. "I'm Michail Ravencrest of the Silver Eagles. Who do I have the pleasure of working with today?"
Michail Ravencrest. A Ravencrest. Oh yes, definitely one in the upper classes.
And no, she had not responded. Not initially. She had turned away, mainly because she was partly eager to get to work, and partly because she was pondering on his relationship with another Ravencrest she knew: a certain white-haired ice mage whom she has met on more than one occasion—and strangely enough, none in combat.
Genesis had sauntered along ahead, very aware that she had left her partner back there with an unanswered question. She heard him running up to catch up with her...then his footsteps faltered momentarily, then resumed.
"I'm Michail Ravencrest of the Silver Eagles. Who do I have the pleasure of working with today?"
“Pleasure?” It was only a formality, she knew, but she could not help but inwardly scoff at nobles and their formal speech. Still though, it would not do to be rude to someone linked to a powerful family. “Gen.” She answered. The least she could do was offer something for him to call her by, even if it was only temporarily. Though in her opinion, a name was just a title. It held no strong significance to her.
The femme tossed one of her knives up, watching its sharp and metallic blade reflect flickers of nearby light sources. This set of karambit was a new addition to her collection. Her philosophy was that one could never have too many weapons on hand. Hence, she surrounded herself with blades, magical and non-magical. Her first instinct was always to use her knives on hand before turning to any spells in her grimoire.
“Michail, was it?” She let one of the curved blades spin in the air before catching it absent-mindedly. She had not ceased walking, just patrolling around the perimeters as needed. “What's your magic?” She was not adept at holding perfumery or fancy conversations—she usually resorted to straight and direct inquiries. After all, her usual conversations only consisted of her would-be victim's info and bargaining for how much she was getting paid. Something else had caught her attention, however. Something he had said earlier.
“A Ravencrest, huh?” She was not usually one for small talk, nor would she be uncomfortable if there was silence between them for the rest of the night. So why was she still talking? “You would know Hania, oui?”
If he delayed too long in a response, she would raise an eyebrow and face him fully for the first time. Flashy clothing, as she had expected. Dual toned hair, not so much. It was definitely a unique look, something she had never seen before. However, nothing showed on her face as she appraised the young man before her, save for a slight flicker of amusement in her gray eyes. As expected, there was his Silver Eagle mantle, signifying his rank and occupation.
Gen lifted her gaze to his piercing crimson ones. Was it just her imagination, or had his eyes been...wandering? The shadow mage was so tempted to roll her eyes at that, but caught herself just in time. Men. They were all the same. Expose just a little more flesh than usual and she had more sway over them. She was no stranger to showing skin, though more out of necessity than for attention. She preferred having the most optimal range of motion, and that meant exposing certain areas in compensation. Not that she minded—she knew she was lithe and fit, and was not ashamed of anything in regards to her body shape.
With this info in mind, maybe it would be entertaining to see how much she could push at this interesting character. The barest hint of a smirk tugged at the side of her mouth. Name and status aside, this would be something purely between a female and a male. Of course, they would still be doing their job, keeping watch for anything suspicious, but it was highly unlikely that anything would happen—so why not have a little bit of fun while she was at it?

The initial silence caught him off guard. Was these mere commoner not pleased to be sharing time out of her day with a Ravencrest? Though she was a woman, the fact she didn't seem to care one way or another was a serious offense in his eyes. But there was no point in criticizing her lack of pleasure with the fact. She had instead just walked on right ahead, causing the younger mage to want to hurry on ahead.
It was a nice view for sure at least.
Wait. What?
No, he was a Silver Eagle and a Ravencrest. He couldn't be seen gawking in such a manner, no matter how much appeal her body had... and there was certainly plenty of it. But that was beside the point! There was a mission to do! The Ravencrest followed, attempting to match pace, though not go ahead.
Scoffing at the pleasantries of his introduction, Michail was about to speak out in triumphant valor in his stead until the woman did introduce himself. Gen? Certainly short for something. Most assuredly, Though he had no reason to pry as to what it might have been short for, and so he didn't. The lack of a family name was likely linked to the fact whatever family she was from was that of a commoners, and that was fine. It didn't matter one way or another.
The woman casually tossed one of her daggers, causing him some idle surprise. The way she absent-mindedly caught it, as though it was just something so natural surprised him. She must have had some talent with the blade. Of course, Victoria Lilygate would likely trash her if she wanted. There was no reason for them to ever engage in combat, however. And that was for the best.
He had managed to avoid staring where his eyes shouldn't have when she inquired about his magic. "Blood Magic; I'm adept at long-range combat and providing cover fire," he added, explaining what his own specialty with his magic was.
Ah, there it was. A question about one of his relatives. "Correct. Hania is my cousin," Michail explained. "He's quite the mage . A potent user of ice magic, having been chosen by a spirit. Though it'll be quite a while most likely before he can represent the family as the head most likely."
Lydia Ravencrest was still alive and strong, after all.
His response wasn't delayed, but it was obvious that he was distracted again. Though he had been trying to keep his eyes on the path and any abnormalities, Gen's question brought his eyes back to her... though a bit below eye level.
It was not just her imagination, however. It was obvious that the younger male was trying to avert his gaze, constantly looking away, but it always came back. As though presented with pandora's box, curiosity kept him from truly looking away. Had she no shame? To be presenting that much was simply shameless. She was a lady of Clover; even if she was a commoner, exposing that much...
Practically physically having to pry his gaze away, he cleared his throat. There was no way he wasn't being obvious about it at this point. He couldn't help it though. Though there was more than an arms reach of distance between the two, a distance that he clearly had no interest in shortening, the woman before him had far too stunning a body. And to expose as much of it as she did was clearly going to take a mental toll on him!
"A-Anyway. I've got quite a pair of eyes and ears. I haven't heard or seen anything out of the normal so far. That's for the brea-best. We've still got a bit to go before the patrol is finished though..." Michail said, immediately correcting himself before making an awkward moment more awkward.
Blood magic. Interesting. “I see...” He also knew Hania, and was offering some more details about the family. She did not know if that was public information or not, but knowledge was power. She tucked that bit of info in the back of her mind. Perhaps it would come in handy someday.
"A-Anyway. I've got quite a pair of eyes and ears. I haven't heard or seen anything out of the normal so far. That's for the brea-best. We've still got a bit to go before the patrol is finished though..."
The redhead raised an eyebrow. His choice of words and vocabulary were far too telling of where his distractions were coming from. The edges of her crimson lips tugged up in a smirk. This would be fun. “If looking at breasts is so entertaining for you, I'd recommend the tavern on the south side of the city. The serving girls there have the assets and the attitudes to match any type of men they serve.” No one ever accused her of sugarcoating things.
As they went through the night, they made small conversations, something that Genesis had not expected at all. Most would have gotten a mere greeting from her, and that was it. However, this Magic Knight had a personality that was too entertaining to pass up. His wandering eye also spoke volumes of his focus—or lack of it. She just had to egg him on somewhat, and she rather enjoyed his reactions, though some of his responses still did surprise her. Perhaps there was a bit more to him than a bumbling fool born in excessive luxury and title. Perhaps. It was too early to tell. A few words here and there meant nothing to her. Only time would tell what a person was really made out of.
She had thought it would be a long night, but the time flew by fairly quickly. As they patrolled around the city walls, not a soul stirred, not even in the shadows. It was all so quiet and peaceful—no evil would befall the city that night. And now, the morning sun was peeking up through the horizon, and Gen was slightly disappointed that nothing interesting had happened so she could fight something. However, she might possibly have a new target in her sights.
As they were leaving, the shadow mage paused for a moment and turned her head slightly back to address her patrol partner one last time. Just one last jab. “Bring yul with you next time, because I'm going to charge you for looking at my body so much.”

Damn it. Michail could tell right away she heard his slip-up of words. It was her fault for presenting them out so openly though, clearly! What did she expect when she had a figure like that, exposing so much of her assets? While he wasn't the sort of man to tell others how to dress or live their lives, the fact she felt the need to mock him for what must have been some sort of defect in his eyes in this situation was nothing short of rude! Very rude! And he knew a thing or two about being rude!
Oh God, what the hell was he thinking? This was awful, just awful!
"D-Don't be absurd! I'm here on a mission, not for sightseeing. I'd not risk my family's reputation over something as mundane as that," he protested, though attempting to keep his voice quiet.
However, he couldn't shut his brain off as his thoughts began to run rampant. Just how large were those assets? How much could one see? D-D-
No.
No, that was enough. Even though he knew that he struggled with matters like these, anything further than what his mind was about to wander to was strictly prohibited. Not just because they were commoners. Not just because he was a Ravencrest. Not just because he was a Magic Knight. But simply because women were terrifying. And this one was no different.
Tempting as she was, Michail knew it wasn't worth it. It couldn't be worth it. He was more than fine just sitting back and focusing on the mission. If he couldn't see them, then they wouldn't be a distraction. Clearing his throat, Michail looked off to the side as they moved on, using this time to try to clear his head.
Michail was able to at least engage in small talk, unfortunately, his wandering eyes weren't forever glued to the path ahead. She continued to give him grief, he forced his focus back until he got relaxed, and was given grief again. This cycle continued for most of their patrol. Michail counted his blessings that they were outside city limits for the patrol, making sure that nobody was able to see his mistake.
Even still, Michail possessed excellent physical senses. While he was born without the ability to sense mana, he was surprisingly astute when it came to matters of detail. There were a few instances where something seemed was wrong given the dead of night, but Michail's sharp ears managed to pick up on those details, realizing that it would have just been an animal. He wasn't an expert tracker, but his eyes, ears, and nose more than made up for what he was otherwise lacking in.
Eventually, the sunrise came. Despite his blunders that were definitely not his fault, they had ensured that Kiten was fine. There wasn't any risk to the town, and there was nothing off, nothing amiss. He knew he got pretty lucky that nothing went off, but--
"Bring yul with you next time, because I'm going to charge you for looking at my body so much."
Was she serious?
As Genesis turned to walk away, Michail's face flushed bright red upon a realization. "Idiot! She's a commoner!" he told himself, having to nearly slap himself to come to.
The Ravencrest's eyes narrowed as the woman walked away. "...yes, women truly are dangerous and frightening," he said as watched her walk away...
"Oh hells!" he said when he realized his nose started bleeding, immediately reaching for his handkerchief. Seriously, why did she have to wear an outfit that showed so much?!
