Artemis sighed as she made her way up from the room she had been given for her time with the crew of The Fury of the Depths. The crew had been kind enough to offer her a spot with them below near the hull of the ship. However, the Captain Verona de la Rouge made sure to find Artemis a small room for herself. In fact, the Captain had thought of giving her own room to Artemis, sharing it with the woman. But Artemis made sure that she did not take the Captain’s room. She had, at least, a modicum respect of the woman. She was a strong leader, and a gear Captain. Artemis knew that Verona de la Rouge was someone who worked hard to get to where she was now, and just like with every female captain, she had had to work with the rumour and belief by old and aging sailors: bad luck always followed a ship that had a woman in it. Of course, Artemis herself could say that it was false, since for the tens of times she had commandeered ships, and even more times being a deckhand, every journey ended without too much problems. Storms were something that were expected, and even windless days and too calm of a sea. However, at the end of the day, Artemis was always able to get back to land without losing any of her crew or any of her ships. She was proud of that fact, and her track record gave her credibility as a sailor herself.[break][break]
Opening the door that led to the helm of the ship, Artemis would finally realize that there was something amiss. She had been lost in her thoughts too much to have noticed that there was quite a flurry of activity happening all around her. The crew members of The Fury of the Depths had all but busied themselves, and while the ship was technically docked at Raque, Artemis knew that they can be chartered to do jobs at any point in their time. It was a good thing that she had asked for a week’s worth of leave from the Green Mantis’ Captain Barron Castle. She had not intended to stay with the crew for a long time, but she had been fascinated with how the ship worked its magic, taking into account everything and anything she could gleam from the exterior and interior of the ship itself. In fact, she had in her possession plans to remake The Fury of the Depths, a possible flagship for herself in the near future. For now, however, Artemis found herself reaching forward and grabbing a young man who seemed to be carrying barrels of apples, rations for a trip, it seems.[break][break] “What’s happening? Why is everyone rushing around?”[break][break]
The young man gulped, before his voice found himself. Cracking with nervousness, possibly because of Artemis’ very intense stare, the young man replied, “We’ve been contracted to do a job. Dangerous. Was told to haul supplies.”[break][break]
Artemis let the young man go, before turning towards Captain Verona de la Rouge, who seemed to have materialized behind her. She motioned Artemis to follow her. Without another word, the young woman would do as the Captain wanted. It seems that she just might be dragged into a job, and Artemis could not deny that she was excited for it. It had been a long time since she had had an adventure out in the open sea, after all.
Artemis followed Captain Verona de la Rouge to the helm, with the woman standing by the wheel of the ship as she seemed to take in all of her crew working on the deck, and those coming and going from below deck. The view was quite spectacular from the helm itself, since it was raised and gave anybody a clear view of the ship from the end to the helm’s rise. It gave a Captain the best at age point, especially when commanding their crew during an emergency situation. It also made sure that anybody who was going to speak to the Captain needed to raise their head, a metaphorical sign of their superior position. Making Captain, after all, was not as easy as one might think, and the skill needed to have to be acknowledged as one was very hard to reach. Years upon years of experience was required, and even then, a captain must have a complete understanding of every single nut and bolt of the ship that they are commandeering. Mastery over all positions within a ships crew is also a must, since a Captain must be able to direct their crew members to their task depending on the situation that arises. To become a captain, a true and respected captain, was not easy. It certainly was not for Artemis who had began her training at a very young age, and she was sure that Captain Verona de la Rouge had a much more tough time reaching her position. [break][break]
“All of this fan fare,” Captain Verona de la Rouge would start, tracing a finger on her chin, “it must be getting you very curious.” She paused, and Artemis deigned her with a raised eyebrow. “Well, to be perfectly honest with you, we have taken up a mission to rid of the seas surrounding the Clover Kingdom of the pirates that had cropped up recently. I am very sure that the Somersets would have had internal knowledge of the pirates and where they operate. In fact, I am sure that the Somersets might have already been contacted about ridding the seas of these pirates. Their presence in the high seas threatens your business and livelihood after all.” The captain would pause once more, tapping her chin now as her eyebrows furrowed. “But, I am also sure that there will be scraps for us to chew at. These pirates are attacking my fellow captains and their cargo, diminishing the supply lines around the coastal towns and cities, and also disrupting the livelihood of good and honest folk. So, I have decided to personally see to it that these pirates get what they deserve, if not more. While you are not part of the crew, technically, I had hoped that you might join us on this endeavour. With your skills as a Magic Knight, I am fairly certain that we will not be having any issues at all subduing this threat.” The Captain would stare at Artemis now, “so, would you mind lending us a hand? For the common good and all that Jazz.”[break][break]
Artemis would nod slowly. She really could not say no after that spiel. These were good and honest people whose lives were being affected after all. She also knew that any pirate activity would be met with strong opposition by her family and their fishermen. Funnily enough, the Somerset’s fishermen were quite adept at protecting themselves from any type of piracy, and while they policed their shores, they were not usually sent to deal with pirates for the most part.[break][break]
“The Somersets do not accept contracts to deal with pirates. We are fishers first and foremost, and while our men and women are adept at protecting themselves when and if needed, we are not the sea’s police force.” Artemis tapped her Green Mantis mantle, “However, as a Magic Knight of the Green Mantis, I have been charged with the duty to protect the citizens of the Clover Kingdom from threats high and low. This means that as long as I am wearing this mantle, and as long as I am a Magic Knight, I will always rise up to the occasion.” Artemis then nodded, “So yes, I will join you in ridding the coast and open sea of these pests. Pirates have often left a distasteful black mark on the people’s livelihood, and we will make sure that they are dealt with.” [break][break]
Captain Verona de la Rouge would smirked, and then nod thankfully. A few orders from her had the entire crew moving at fast pace. It seems that the hunt for these pirates will be commencing very shortly, and Artemis herself could feel the adrenaline pumping into her bloodstream. The hunt is on.
Artemis felt the breeze as The Fury of the Depths flew its way across the sea, skimming the waves as they made swift time in trying to catch the pirates. The ship was most likely the best one to pursue any pirate activity, since it can manage to track, find, and deal with the pirate ships without being slowed down by the waves and the wind. Interestingly enough, the ship itself seemed to be powered by some form of magic, though it was only by speculation of Artemis as she watched Captain Verona de la Rouge maneuver the boat through the light waves that the ship rode. From what she could sense with her latent sensory magic, the woman was using some form of wind magic, most likely turning the tides in their favour, and the wind blowing for their benefit. She would not complain, and was actually very happy that the woman seemed to be very practical with her use of magic. A perfect choice for a Captain, and her magic aided their cause and the moniker of the ship as being one of the fastest in the Clover Kingdom. [break][break]
“Pirates!” [break][break]
The mere utterance of the word got the crew tense. It seems that they had finally caught up with the ship that had been the scourge of some of the more peaceful trading ships. Their flags were even hung high and mighty, and it seems as though they were coky to boot. Of course, who would not be when they had won battles without any resistance for the most part. They were proud, and they were going to pay for it very dearly as Artemis readied her grimoire. [break][break]
As they approached, Artemis would hold up her hand and address the Captain, “Bombard their ship, let me deal with their crew.” [break][break]
Without waiting for the first cannon to fire, Artemis’ grimoire had already come to life. The hue of ocean blue surrounded the tome as it flipped pages rapidly, landing on the spell that Artemis chose to use first. [break][break]
“War-maiden: Lady Sif.” [break][break]
Water coalesced around her, and the mana she exhuded started to change her form. Replacing her image was a warrior with blonde hair, clad with armor and silk, with a pair of wings stretching itself out. But, she was not done yet. Artemis’ grimoire flipped a few more pages, before landing on her second spell. [break][break]
“Scylla.” [break][break]
Two swords made of water appeared on both her hands, which she now gripped as she tested their balance. Her mana knew just the right shape, size, and weight the swords needed to be as balanced as possible. She whipped both around, making sure to have them shimmer in to sight as the whole crew of The Fury of the Depths, giving them a nod, before her wings started itself and made her float up from the boat itself. [break][break]
The flight towards the pirate ship was quick, and the pirates themselves saw Artemis making her way towards them. It was almost too easy as they all grouped up in the hopes of being able to defend themselves better. However, it just made Artemis’ plan way easier to enact. Even then, The Fury of the Depths had started their bombardment of the ship, rocking them and causing the crew to start panicking. [break][break]
Artemis took advantage, and immediately landed with her swords out. Pushing herself forwards, she zipped through the crew members, eight in total, killing them with one swift slice to their midsection. It took her less than three seconds to down all eight of the crew with her speed. [break][break]
The Captain, a pompous individual, tried to attack Artemis, but to no avail. With a quick throw of her sword, Scylla pierced through the man’s chest, ending his life without so much as a fight. [break][break]
Artemis would wave at The Fury of the Depths to come closer and retrieve the bodies and the stolen goods. It was the easiest mission that Captain Verona’s crew had ever finished successfully.
