[attr="class","shadowsHead"]Mapping the Temple Ruins
Recently the ancient ruins of a forest temple have been discovered deep within the most central part of the witches forest, those who have gotten close have reported that their sensory magic either doesn't work or if it does work it doesn't work right giving false positives. Taking it upon yourself/selves you have decided to go exploring the ruins and make a physical map to bring back to the historical society so they might go in and study the ruins without the worry of being lost. They have requested that everything remain untouched for them.
[attr="class","shadowsSub"]Details
Minimum Number of Players: 1 (3 max)
[break]Minimum Word Count: 3000 per person
[break]Location: Central Forest
[break]Special Requirements: Create a physical map of the forest temple ruins, tracking spells are wonky and will not work as intended due to some unknown interference. Don't touch anything.
[break]Additional Information: These bats appear to be made of pure shadow and are double the size of a ruler. Their echo location will deafen those that hear it for two rounds where their wings let off deep shadow mists that will blind until they are taken out.
[break]Additional Information: These now crumbling stone statues are covered with vines and look like witches of old. They remain completely still until they are passed then they will activate. They will aim for men first due to the laws of the witches forest not allowing men to enter. Statue designs and heights will depend on the users themselves.
Ever since the day Griswold had first gone delving into some dungeons with a pair of magic knights and found an ancient elven mural depicting demonic forms along the walls, life had become a whole lot more hectic for him. Even though his life had always been quite hectic as it were, what with him actively seeking out injustice towards peasants and just trying to do his best to protect them if at all possible, seeing that demon depicted on the wall had jump started a whole different kind of events for the young elven mage. A few days after he had come to find the place and decided not to think too much of it, he had been asked to appear at the Ravencrest estate in Carrion for a training session with Hania. Believing this might be exactly what he needed in order to push himself towards becoming stronger as a knight, it had brought about quite a few realizations that were perhaps even more important to him than the strength he had gained.
Among these realizations was the fact that his family might very well still be alive somewhere else on the planet, or maybe even exist in a different dimension altogether due to the events of something called the shattering. For someone who had given up on looking for his relatives three years ago, believing them to have all died, that had come as quite the blow. More so after learning that there had been a particular someone that had caused all of it, though this someone was not a human being he would just be able to rough up for doing the awful things they had done. No, all of it had been caused by an archdemon going by the name of Asmodeus, an entity that, up until several days prior to learning about this information, he did not even believe existed. To him, the existence of things from other dimensions had always been something he refused to believe in, especially since the world was already crazy enough as it was.
What with the strong magic region he had always lived close to warping creatures into all kinds of shapes and gifting them with powers, there was really no place in the world for demonic entities or beings such as gods. Or rather, there was no place in Griswold’s reality for such things as life was hard enough without demons, archdemons and devils, though they cared very little for what Griswold believed, what Griswold wanted or how hard his life had been up until this very moment. Coming to terms with the fact that demons were in fact the reason for all of his suffering, or at the very least the start of his suffering, what with the shattering being the reason for his entire world breaking down and losing all those he held dear, there were quite a lot of things the former magic knight wished to shove down the demon lords’ throat before the end claimed him. Unfortunately for him however, he simply did not possess this level of strength, so his revenge could not be meted out.
That said, there were other things that he could do that would hopefully speed along the eventual death of the archdemon, one of these being the mapping of the forest regions in which one of the other archdemons resided. And so, Griswold had taken it upon himself to head out into a place that was no longer safe to his kind, a place that had always been somewhat secretive, and now he knew why. Having learned that the current witch queen was the archdemon Lilith, the whole place had become somewhat of a no-fly zone for anything related to magic knights or humans in general. Having even heard that there were lesser demons within the area, as well as demons of grades people knew nothing about, it was the kind of undertaking nobody would really wish to take up. And then there was Griswold. To him, knowing a thing or two about this place was going to be very helpful as getting the lay of the land could mean the difference between life and death at times.
Even if he was not going to personally be fighting here, the least he could do was to scout the place out and create an accurate map of the area that might help those that would fight here a bit of an edge. And even if it could not give them an edge, as long as there was the small chance that it might level out the playing field, than that was something he was willing to risk himself and his health for by coming here. In truth, there were also some personal reasons behind coming here, one of them hanging on his back while covered for the most part under a large black scarf and wrapped in black rags. It was said that the sword he carried along with him was one of a small amount made in the witches forest for those select few guardians of the glade that were deemed fit to wield them. How they had eventually made their way from person to person until this particular sword got into Griswold’s hands was something he might never figure out, though it was just another bit of information he hoped to achieve by checking the place out with his own eyes.

The sword had been a gift for having him around to train with during a period of time in which Hania wished to further develop a bond with his frost spirit, to go beyond the limitations of their merged form in order to reach an even more powerful state. Something called Spirit Dive or whatever, it hadn’t fully registered with the elf as there were so many different things he was working on at the time. Getting stronger, not getting knocked out too early in their training session, the news of how his family might not be dead, but might still exist somewhere he would not be able to reach, the fact that demons existed and were actively assaulting the clover kingdom from various sides and even the notion that the country directly to their north was trying to create a gateway leading to the demonic underworld. The very idea that people would sign on with demons in order to take over the world by opening a gateway between the two seemed idiotic to him at the time, though he swiftly found out more.
As it turned out, three specific individuals known as the dark triad were responsible for taking over the country, forming an army and using their own commoners and peasants as fuel for their war devices and machinations, which to someone like Griswold meant that they had more or less declared war on not just clover, but on their own country as well. Hopefully, that meant that there were people within the country that would start an uprising, a rebellion even, though they too would likely get cut down and killed, or used just like the others would be that were considered to be fit for nothing but fuel. But as he had thought about it in the past, he also wondered whether there might be people within the clover kingdom that might have sided on with the demons. After all, the dark triad was a group of people that showed up within their own country, killed those in charge and took over with a bloody insurgency. This meant that if things went badly in the future, the same could happen here.
Even if the structure of command was different in the land of clover, what with them having a plethora of captains looking over their own squads, a wizard king looking over them and an actual queen lording over the country, doing such a thing would not be quite so easy. In that way, they were lucky that they did not just have an army and a monarch like spade did. For them to get overthrown, the best shot anyone would have at doing it would exist only after the royal knights exams had been completed, task forces had been formed and an attack was executed against the three archdemons; Lilith, Aamon and Asmodeus. If they were to fail, at least three of the strongest magic knights within the country would have died, leaving a sizable gap in the offensive and defensive capabilities of the clover kingdom. At which point, it would be possible for insurgents to overthrow the countries leadership, especially when aided by the victorious archdemons.
This was just one more reason why Griswold had taken it upon himself to come to these woodlands, as that was clearly something he wished to not see happen. Again, the amount of control he actually had over it was limited, though that would not stop him from at the very least trying his damn best to make even the tiniest of ripples. Just like he was making ripples, so did he imagine the witches were doing their best as well, as many of them most likely had no idea that their queen was in fact an archdemoness, which could mean that there were rebels out in these forests that might need help, or might consider aiding him in his current quest. Regardless of whether he would actually be able to find them or not, there was still an overly huge chance that they would actively avoid him even if they noticed him, what with them not being used to having men in their society. As strange as it was to consider how a whole forest of witches could thrive without men to actually help with the making of babies, this train of thought was swiftly broken up.
Hearing a sharp noise coming from further up ahead, the former magic knight prepared himself for trouble as he reached his right hand over his shoulder, gripping the hilt of his sword tightly as he awaited whatever threats might show themselves out here. The closer the noise came to him, the more he began to notice black trails following in the wake of something that was moving around by air, rather than running along the ground, something that might make things rather difficult for him to deal with as he did not exactly possess any tools capable of flight aside from his broom. And fighting while on the back of a broom was not exactly the easiest form of combat imaginable, so if there were to be any other means of going about it, he would very much have liked to grab hold of it with both hands. But as the black trails and the noise got closer, Griswold could feel that his ears were starting to throb with pain.

So when four flying creatures dashed out of the treeline and made their way over to him, he would not allow them to get any closer as he let go of the handle of his sword. If they were in fact demons, he could not risk taking any chances by letting them get any closer, not with the pain in his ears intensifying the more they approached, meaning the two simply had to be related. So instead of going with the sword approach, his grimoire open up as the elven mage started radiating with light, shortly before a burst of solar mana shot forth into all directions, incinerating both trees and the incoming creatures before they had the chance to really get any closer and increase the strain they placed on his ears. Leaving a bit of a ringing in his ears and a decent sized headache, Griswold picked in his ear with his finger before shaking it off and continuing. Taking the map to be and his marking tools back out, he continued his journey as planned.
Even though it bothered him a bit that he had not gotten the chance to really look into the things he had been forced to kill as the sheer intensity of his attack had left no remains for him to actually inspect, it had also given him a bit of extra work since he had to add in a forty meter clearing onto the map of his own creation. Luckily, the attack hadn’t left much of a crater, which was one of the few things that had actually gone right, along with the fact that the instant incineration of the trees had kept a potential forest fire from forming. With the creatures dead and gone, there was no way to figure out whether they were demons or whether they were just hostile animals that had been given powers through prolonged contact with natural mana. Either way, he would not feel bad about it, as it was made quite clear that it was a “them or me” kind of scenario, in which case he would always pick himself. Something that had only become more true now that he had actually been given a purpose beyond just protecting peasants.
Looking around momentarily to make sure there were no leftover cinders in the wake of his solar spell, he stomped out the final remnants before moving along. There was still a lot of ground to cover after all, and if he was to be stopped by every single creature that might or might not attack him, he was going to be here for a while. That, and he would prefer to put a bit of distance between himself and the location in which he had just used a rather large and luminescent spell, as the sound and the sight of it might very well have alerted some actual demons to his presence. And if they were in any way as dangerous as Hania and Yugo had made them out to be, avoiding them was going to be somewhat of a priority while he continued making the map. Getting a move on, the former magic knight marked quite a few locations on the otherwise still fairly empty map, though he believed himself to be doing quite a decent job. Marking the important landmarks that anyone could see would make for a map anyone could read, or so he thought.
Not being an actual cartographer, there was a limit to the amount of things he knew about the making of a map, though he imagined the same could be said about anyone who would have been sent in here without the proper training or education. Knowing to mark down anything along the lines of old ruins of buildings, temples or whatever else qualified as the previously mentioned stuff, he also marked bodies of water and hills as anything might be useful when having to fight through this place. It was because of this that he had come across a rather large temple during his assignment, a place he believed would make for a perfect landmark on his new map. Deciding to take a look around and make sure the place did not house anything dangerous, he did so in the most quiet sense that he could. Places like these seemed like they might house some of those witches that might have fled their homes when Lilith played her hand, or worse, demons that might be laying in wait for someone to beat around and kill for sport.
While moving through the last crumbled remains of a temple that needed to be added onto the map, he passed by various statues that were created in the likeness of those that had ruled in the forest at some point, or so he believed. Refusing to believe anyone would just make such lifelike statues of just about every nobody that passed through the forest, he imagined it was the same as it was in the noble region of the land of clover. Statues erected as a means of honoring those that had performed great feats of service to the country, thus immortalizing their names in the records, as well as in stone carved into their likeness. Looking around, he saw the pedestals that had most likely housed statues of their own at some point, though the ones that had stood on it had seemingly been toppled or removed. With the rocky bits and pieces scattered along the floor of the temple ruins, it was as if some of them had willfully been shattered here, though he could not tell what the reason for such a thing might have been.

The more he looked around, the more he began to see the signs of battle in the tiles he walked on, the pillars he passed by and even on the empty pedestals themselves. For whatever reason, people had fought here, which likely resulted in many of the statues here being broken, or so he believed until he heard a noise behind him. Looking on to see how two stones at different portions of the building began to move about with quite a bit of struggle, likely because rock was not meant to move like that, the dust and vine covered statues turned to face him. Even though their expressions did not change, Griswold could feel a great deal of hostility towards him, radiating from the statues in an almost tangible manner. After a moment of what seemed a lot like stretching, the robust movement of the statues began to turn more and more fluent, which was quite likely a bad thing for him, or at least it was going to be if he was to give them the chance to get any more loose and nimble.
For as hard as stone was, there was no chance that it would be able to move fast, and so Griswold began closing the distance between himself and the nearest statue, all while closing his hand around the handle of his weapon and bringing out the blade which had been brought into this world in this very forest. Moments away from striking the statue, a bunch of rock suddenly made its way up from the ground, taking the full brunt of the attack as the other statue held out her…. Its hand out towards him. Leaving the impression that these statues could wield earth magic somehow, he kicked off against the stone, using the moment while swinging the blade up in order to break away from the rocky barrier that had rapidly been erected, causing the structure to break down entirely. The moment it broke, a mass of plants came launching forward, plants similar to the vines that had been wrapped around the statue itself.
With two mighty swings, he cut through the incoming mass by severing the vines before beginning to run outside, pursued by statues. Giving a sideways look to the other statue, it seemed that she was the one controlling the vines, meaning one of them controlled earth magic while the other utilized plant magic, putting him into a rather precarious situation. Where one could create defensive structures, the other would attack him with vines, which made it quite difficult for him to just cut them down. Atleast outside, the temple would remain unharmed. Rushing at the one who cast the defensive stone structures, he held out his blade in an attempt to swing it, though as soon as he could feel the ground shift, he broke away from his forward stride and made his way straight towards the vine user. Leaning his blade over to the right, he planned on striking the vine summoner down, only for a wall of earth to start forming a second time.
Though that was exactly what he had been betting on. For the moment the wall rose, Griswold used the momentum of his strike to swing the blade while stopping his forward motion, stopping in his tracks and throwing his bastard sword with all of the force he could muster towards the statue that was actively erecting a shield to protect the vine user. Piercing the statue and coming out the other end, he only had mere moments left in which he had to both protect himself from what would undoubtedly be a retaliation from the planet user, meaning he would have to rely on drastic measures, the same drastic measures he had taken before to take care of what he believed might have been demons. In a burst of light, solar magic burst forth from his body, destroying a large section of the temple grounds while utterly destroying the stone summoner that had the sword stuck inside of it while sending the plant summoner flying across the room, through a hole in the ceiling to the remnants of the first floor.
Not having the time to go back and retrieve his sword, he had to use the opening he had created to completely eradicate the second statue before it could get its bearings and go about attacking him again. Having already used a considerable chunk of his mana to fight the shadowy creatures and the statues, he would need to call upon his reserves one more time. So as he moved, he focused upon his mana pool, forcing his body to rapidly start producing more mana which he would channel in part towards a final spell that would hopefully deal with the last statue too. Jumping through the hole in the ceiling, Griswold’s body began radiating a third time today, though this time, it would not be to bring about the same spell again. Instead of creating a burst to blast everything in his direct environment, this spell used that same amount of power and channeled it into a single beam of solar mana aimed at incinerating every bit of statue that got hit with it. Angling the beam to not hit the temple, the blast shot forth from his body, making contact with the statue and spreading its minerals all over the forest.
With the last of the two statues reduced to a mass of crumbled rock and stone, Griswold began wrapping his sword back up with the black cloth he used to cover up all but the handle, after which he swung the somewhat heavy bastard of a sword back over his shoulder. Lodging it back where it belonged, he swiftly kicked one of the rocks in front of him across the chamber before stepping outside. Finishing up his markings of the temple on the map, he made a special mention at the bottom of the paper, writing down “caution: statues potentially hostile golems” for any who might venture here in the near future. Whether anyone would ever actually bother to even use the map he had made with blood, sweat and tears remained to be seen, but at least now he could add the finishing touches to it and return it to the clover kingdom. Feeling quite tuckered out as a result of having to fight the defensive mechanisms of the witches, as well as the creature that may or may not have been demons, he would not waste a lot of time making his way out of the place.
Adding the finishing touches as a means of finalizing his newly made map, he did hope that the people he was making this for would be able to make some use of it. That said, if there was a chance that he himself might actually be taken seriously and got picked for the position of royal knight, which was something he had actually signed up for after having his confidence restored to some extent after the tedious training sessions with Hania, he would be able to make use of it himself if he were to be unfortunate enough to get sent here. Personally, he did not have any beef with Lilith, but if he were to actually get assigned to the squad that was to be dealing with her, he would not refuse. And with that thought in mind, he made his way back to the clover country.
