Once the fighting had come to an end, there were a few things Griswold had noticed about all of it, and it was quite interesting. Had it been up to him, he would have had to take on the acorns and just hope for the best, as nothing was ever quite as simple as it seemed in places such as these. What seemed like acorns might very well be steel balls raining from the sky, or some kind of explosives. Dungeons were like that sometimes, even if it sounded incredibly peculiar. To see this dark magic be used as a means of creating some kind of protective shell around them that protected them from it entirely was nothing short of interesting, especially since he himself was really only good for one thing, and that was blowing stuff up with magic. For him, protecting others in a similar fashion was not exactly in his repertoire, nor would it likely ever be.
“Thank you, I’ve been practicing quite a bit. It is one of the reasons I’ve come here, among other things. That said, it’s not as impressive as this dark magic shell, I could never do something like that myself.”
Responding to being praised was never something he had been good at, mostly because he hadn’t been praised all that often. As a child, he was horrible with magic, so there wasn’t a whole lot of praise going around at that particular department. Even as a magic knight, people were usually more quick to judge his character or call him out over his recklessness before they would ever praise a single thing he did. So in a way, it was nice hearing something out of the ordinary for once, even though it would not last for very long. There were still more of these animals above them it seemed, though they were seemingly not attacking yet. Maybe it was due to the fact that the others had been slain that they were deciding to stay back for a bit. For the moment though, they seemed to not be in any direct danger of attack, and that was good enough for him.
Further elaborating on this fact, the forest up ahead appeared to “open up” as the trees almost stepped out of the way to unveil a previously concealed route leading to yet another meadow. Letting a deep sigh escape his lips, Griswold already knew exactly what this meant, as the spring and summer portions of the dungeon had all started with a forest before eventually breaking open into a meadow, at which point they would have a bunch of enemies thrown at them that needed to be put to death. Gesturing at it and making his way towards it, the large squirrels seemed to follow them overhead, but as of yet made no moves to attack either. Content with following their progress, it seemed both Hans and Griswold were aware of their presence, but were in turn content with having them not be attacked. But as they approached the clearing and made their way into the meadow, there was no doubt that the lack of hostility would soon change.
FLOOR 3 | ROOM 3
Passing through the tree-line and into yet another goddamn meadow, the grass here was a lot higher, reaching all the way up to his knees. More than that, the place truly took on the colors of autumn as the grass was no longer as green as in the previous rooms, but that much was to be expected. Letting his eyes drift off into the distance, the only thing he noticed was a large tree sitting in the dead center of the meadow, as well as something large resting just beneath it. At least it had been resting until the two mages entered the meadow, at which point some invisible force seemed to wake the creature, rousing it from its slumber and calling it into action. Even from the distance it was at now, the sound it unleashed rattled Griswold’s bones in his body, bellowing so deeply the entire forest seemed to shake along with him.
Shaking its antlers, some of the leaves growing in it came loose and fell down to the ground around it as it stomped the ground twice with its feet. Responding to the deep bellow of the large buck, the squirrels that had been following Griswold and Hans darted out of the tree-line and rushed into the meadow to meet the buck as more of the mushroom creatures broke through the floor next to the tree and behind the buck. Whatever it was, it had a certain kind of power over the creatures and the land, meaning this might very well be the lord of this dungeon. So as odd as it was to consider a massive buck with tree-like antlers to be the lord of… well, anything really, it was not even close to the strangest thing he had seen up until now, and there would likely still be far stranger things to come in the not too distant future.
"Who are you travelers, to take the path not taken?"
Pausing for a moment after the massive stag just spoke to the two of them, he wondered what exactly this meant. To take the path not taken wasn’t possible after all, as the path not taken became taken the moment someone set foot on it. But maybe it was meant to confuse them, to make them think this was somehow important when it really did not mean a damn thing. Still though, in case it was somehow important for their progress through this place, Griswold still did the best he could to come to an answer. However, the fact that the question had been posed in such a seemingly impossible manner more or less made him tap out. He wasn’t much of a scholar, so things of such a nature were truly wasted on him, something the stag would soon come to find out as it had not been put in their path for the sole purpose of having a conversation about the possible and the impossible.
“Well, I can only speak for myself, but I’m Griswold, and I’ve taken this path to get strong enough to protect the poor and neglected.”
For him, it was just that simple. If he wanted to keep protecting the people of the forsaken realm, he needed to get stronger and stronger as a means of keeping up with the increasingly more powerful threats it faced. Sure, they faced the entire country, but somehow the fallout of it all kept falling upon the poorest of the poor as the rich had their affairs very well in order. As such, if he was to choose any of the three regions to help out during their time of need, it would always be that one, even if those ruling the country would come to hate him for it. But that did not matter to him, he did not know them anyway. With his answer given, the stag turned its gaze towards the dark mage, wondering if he had something to say for himself and his reasons for being here. Wondering whether the answer he gave or the answer Hans would give would be sufficient, it in turn made him wonder what that would mean, because it seemed unlikely to believe that the beast would just let them go after it had called the creatures of the autumn forest to its side.
For now, the only thing Griswold could really do was watch, wait and listen for what was to come next while hoping for the best.

"When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back."
It appears that a path had been made for the duo after their recent battle. Some of the trees ahead moved out of the way, revealing a once concealed location. The dark mage did not question this of course, and like the solar mage, he traversed down this path as well, onto the next area. As he did, the dark mage used his ki to keep an eye on the squirrels above. So far they hadn't attacked, but it was clear that they were following the duo through the trees. Hans could've just struck them down now and be done with them, but he didn't see the point in fighting them when they weren't being hostile. They didn't seem to be afraid though, which caught the man's interest. It wasn't like with the previous squirrels preparing that sneak attack with the acorns....These ones appear to be waiting for something else. Either way, he and his partner will just deal with them if they end up changing their attitude.
A part of Hans was glad that Griswold found his defensive spell impressive. With dark magic, it sort of has a bad rep in the eyes of a lot of people which the dark mage can understand. The darkness is usually paired up with things like, monsters, evil, the chilling embrace of death...and the unknown, things that were widely looked down upon and feared. But the element of darkness was more than just that. It's sturdy, mysterious, patient...and safe. Hans believes that no magic is truly evil, and that it all depends on its user. From the moment Hans was able to harness this element he has never resented it. It was a true representation of what he stands for.
Like most of the dungeon so far, save for the monsters and occasional talks, the traversing from one area to the next was quiet. This was the third meadow the duo has come across, but just like the last, it was different. The grass was taller, and had a color matching this autumn-like theme. The leaves on the trees were still orange with some of them falling, heading straight to the ground with the ones that were already there. Each step taken made a crunching sound from the leaves which gave Hans a bit of nostalgia to his youth. He used to purposely step on the dead leaves just to hear this noise, even when he was supposed to be raking them which got a scolding out of his mother from time to time. The dark mage misses those simple times....He misses her.
Hans' nostalgia trip came to an end however as ki picked up something other than those squirrels. His attention turned to the source of this ki and at the very end of the meadow appeared to be some sort of buck resting at the base of a large oak tree. As the wind continued to dance peacefully, the buck stirred awake, its attention immediately set on the two mages. The squirrels that had been following the two came from the trees and to the buck's side, along with two of those mushroom creatures.
"Who are you travelers, to take the path not taken?" It spoke.
Hans did not appear phased by this. In fact, it reminded him of his encounter with the self-proclaimed guardian of Yuletide, an old reindeer by the name of Rudolf. But unlike before, Hans doubted that this would end peacefully.
Its question was a bit cryptic, but the solar mage was able to give it an answer, one that Hans truly respects. Having spent a big part of his life living in the slums of Aries Garse, Hans had taken it upon himself to be the self-proclaimed protector of that town, and by extension the rest of the Forsaken Region. These areas tend to be overlooked by the majority of the kingdom. Sure, they were protected by the Magic Knights, but at the same time, it didn't feel like they were given much priority as the Common and especially the Noble Regions. The dark mage was not going to let anything bad happen to the Forsaken...not if he can help it.
"Couldn't have said it better myself." Hans said with a bit of an impressed smirk. The Autumn figure appears to be pleased mostly with Griswold...but that didn't mean it was going to back down.
With a gesture of its leafy antler, the buck ordered the other beasts to attack! Hans wasted no time with sending his sword-like golem out to attack one of the mushroom beasts. Hans used his mana tether to pierce the golem straight through one of the mushrooms, causing it to burst into poisonous spores. Fortunately, Hans was safe at his current distance...or so he thought. Taking note of the smart maneuver, the autumn buck used what appears to be wind magic to kick up the already gentle breeze, making it a little more violent! The wind pushed the spores into Hans' direction, making contact with him. "Tch, smart." The dark mage muttered. Hans could feel the spores disrupting his mana a bit...but it didn't do much. Still, Hans didn't consider telling Griswold that the spores were harmless since it could have a totally different effect on the solar mage for all he knew.
As this happened, two of the squirrels ran back up into the trees and darted across them, attempting to catch Hans by surprise. The third one remained on the ground and darted to the dark mage, clamping its fangs onto his ankle! But...it did nothing against the man's dark shell. Hans simply drove his sword into the beast's head and continued to follow the other two squirrels with his ki. They didn't seem like they were going to dive down to attack, and instead, focused on rustling the trees that they were in, dropping more acorns! This was another useless attempt, but it didn't make it any less annoying for the dark mage. So Hans ran at the tree that the two squirrels were currently occupying and with one slash of his sword against the trunk, Hans sliced the tree in half! The dark mage bounced back in time as the tree fell forward, avoiding it. His katana may not be magic, but it was certainly durable...and mighty. In a sense, it has "grown" along with Hans throughout the years, going through many battles, damages, and improvements. Among all of his swords, this normal katana was Hans' signature weapon.
With the tree colliding with the ground, it made a loud thud that shook the ground, but not the buck. The two squirrels fell out of the leaves, a bit dazed and confused before getting sliced in half, one after the other by the dark mage's sword. Then from the other side of the fallen tree, the mushroom beast leapt into the air, attempting to attack Hans, but with his mana tether once again, he sent his sword-like golem flying at the beast, slicing it in two! The spores were out of range again, but the spectating Autumn Avatar used wind magic again to send it towards Hans, but the merc was prepared!
"Black Hole." Hans rose his free palm up and summoned a dark black hole from his grimoire. Unlike his other defense spells, this one did not deflect....but absorb. The spores fell straight into the bottomless void of Hans' black hole spell, never to be seen again. He then clenched his fist and the black hole faded, causing the buck to scuff at the man. The buck looked at Hans for a bit, silently judging him before turning its attention to Griswold. After all of that, it still seemed mostly interested in the solar mage. Perhaps it was moved by the guy's words? Despite how it acted, the buck wanted a fair fight with Griswold, and Hans could sense that as well.
With another stomp, the buck caused the ground to shake, similar to what the fallen tree did to show off its power. Hans dropped out of his fighting stance and looked over at the solar mage. "You think you can handle him?" Hans asked, officially respecting the buck's wish, even to the point of lowering his defensive spell from the solar mage. Hans has confidence in the guy, but if he found himself with his back against the wall, the dark mage would swoop in if needed.

For how impressive it was to see Hans fighting the woodland creatures, the fact that the buck was wanting to fight with Griswold more or less took his focus. As it just stood there, trampling the ground beneath it as the dark mage faced off against the other beasts in the area, he thought about how he should face this creature. It was true that he had come here for the sake of training, and knew that these creatures were all the product of the dungeon rather than actual animals, though that was something he was currently struggling with. There was something so regal about the beast, something that made it look like it was actively looking after this place that made it hard for him to want to kill it, yet it was something that needed to be done if they were to move on from this point. In the end, it all came down to the question the beast had posed.
When it asked him more or less what he was doing here and why he had come, Griswold hadn’t taken a whole lot of time to think about his answer as it was rather simple for him, though he could have said much more. To defeat the demon lords, to become strong enough to make sure the next demon lords would never get the chance to rise, to look after nature and keep people from randomly slaughtering entire packs of wildlife, and the list went on. But since the people he considered to be his adoptive family lived out in the forsaken region, it was a place that had come to rule at the top of his list of reasons for wanting to become stronger: To protect the commoners and peasants of the land of clover from harm. Rather than calling it quits here, he imagined this was just going to be one of many hard decisions he was going to have to be making over the coming weeks, months and years.
Hopefully the ends justified the means.
Placing his sword over his shoulder and locking it back into place on his back, Griswold cracked his knuckles as he established eye contact with the majestic stag of autumn. He did not want to make this creature suffer for even a second. If anything, he wanted to get to the point where he could kill it at once without it really getting the chance to feel the pain, which limited his options to two particular spells he had in his grimoire at this point in time. Narrowing it down to exactly one since there was no reason to destroy the surrounding environment, Griswold began charging at the buck, which in turn rose on its hind legs for a quick display of power before beginning to rush at Griswold. Beginning to radiate with light as he approached the beast, he waited for there to only be a few meters left until they collided before releasing a beam of solar mana that would rip through the beast completely. Sundering limbs and tearing flesh from bone, the fight was over in an instant.
FLOOR 4 | ROOM 1
As the bits and pieces of the once mighty stag were still raining down upon the meadow they found themselves in, it was clear that its death had triggered something as the entire environment responded to it. Significantly dropping in terms of temperature, all of the leaves suddenly fell from the trees around them. Autumn had passed, and winter had arrived before them in the blink of an eye. Not taking the time to mourn the passing of the stag since it would just be reborn shortly after they left the place, he was at the very least glad that he could have taken it out in such a fashion as to not make it suffer. Being the protector of its own little realm, Griswold had felt a rather strong connection to it, as he too had more or less become the protector of a realm. The forsaken realm that was.
With the path out of here and into whatever winter wonderland this place had in store for them next, the elven knight preferred not to stick around the remains of the stag for too long, instead taking the lead again as they left the meadows behind for snow covered floors and barren trees. As much as he enjoyed the thought of leaving behind yet another meadow for what appeared to be a path leading into a clearing in the middle of the forest, Griswold knew that they would just be repeating the same old crap over and over again, as they’ve been through three forests so far and braved four meadows with increasingly more powerful entities guarding them. But for whatever power they held, they did not match the kind of power Griswold and Hans brought to the table. And that was all fine and good, as this was an endeavor related to growing stronger and smarter in battle, not a race to avoid dying.
While the cold did not bother him all that much, he could imagine how Hans might not share that sentiment. After all, his element seemed to be all about darkness, where as Griswold dealt with cosmic heat. So, using his fair amount of mana control, he formed a small sun the size of a basketball that would hover in their vicinity, radiating the kind of heat that would keep someone warm in spite of the elements. At this point, it was more or less the only thing he could really do about it after all. However, once he formed the sun, he could feel a shift nearby as the snow seemed to move. Inspecting it closer, it seemed instead that there were creatures that had just about the same color pelt as the snow, being some kind of foxes that had begun circling them. Were it not for their natural camouflage and the fact that their environment had just changed, Griswold believed that he might have noticed them sooner. But it was what it was.
Creating a strange blueish flame to form around them, it was clear that they were trying to conjure up fake images to distract Griswold and Hans from the real deal, though he was not so easily fooled. Being quite adapt at sensory, at least enough to see through the trickery of these creatures, it was relatively easy for him to follow the real ones around and keep them from hitting him with their flames. With his sword still on his back, he prepared to lash out at these creatures, were it not for the fact that they were quite agile and did not have any intention of getting close to them just yet. If nothing else, it gave him a bit of time to reach for his blade and to figure out how these creatures intended to attack them now that their illusionary abilities seemed to fail them. Gripping the handle of his blade, he was prepared to strike as soon as the foxes truly made their move.

Instead of exploding when coming into contact with a solid surface, it will instead attempt to burn its way through by either punching through almost all non-magical structures with ease or by melting it on contact. Scorching the earth and leaving a trail in its wake, the beam can cause minor third degree burns, break bones and make a direct hit quite lethal. "When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back."
As Hans predicted, the fall of the Autumn guardian did not signify the end of this dungeon. No, the surroundings changed once more, transforming into the snowy cold of winter. Snow had instantly covered the area while more continued to drop from the now cloudy skies at a moderate rate. The once orange-leafed trees were lifeless, and the temperature dropped to freezing which the dark mage was able to feel even under his defense spell. This spell may be great for protecting against attacks...but not so much when it comes to the cold. Hans' breath was now visible, creating a small puff of smoke as he looked around. The Autumn section may not have been the end, but the dark mage felt that they were getting close to it.
Traveling a bit behind the solar mage, Hans continued to look around his surroundings, not for enemies since that what his ki senses were for, but to take in the beauty of the snow. Out of all the seasons, Hans had a particular liking for winter. As a child, Hans wasn't particularly the type to go out and get into snowball fights or make snow angels. He did however enjoy watching the snowfall and liked the sound the snow made whenever he walked on it, similar to the orange leaves of autumn. The nostalgia from being under the snow again was strong and even brought a small smile to his face. That smile didn't last, however, as the cold was starting to get to the man. Normally, cold temperatures didn't really bother Hans which was ironic given his element is the absence of light, and by that degree, heat. It should make things feel colder to him, but the dark mage was able to take it.
Still...this cold felt a little more uncomfortable compared to the natural cold. Hans had to stuff his hands into his pockets in an effort to keep warm, but it didn't do much. The man would've started shivering and maybe find it hard to keep at his current pace if it weren't for the orb of solar energy that Griswold spawned between them. "Thanks." Hans said, his breath still visible. The man was starting to warm up, but he kept his hands in his pockets for a bit. Now, Hans was thinking a little about how Griswold handled the Autumn guardian in the previous area. Hans felt that the man was stronger, but he wasn't expecting the solar mage to defeat it in one blow. He underestimated his partner, just by a little, but the dark mage still felt kind of bad for doing so. But, Hans also did not believe that Griswold obliterated the guardian to show off his strength. Was it some sort of act of mercy? The buck did stand out from the other mana beasts here so far, and not just because it could speak. It felt like it had genuine sentience, that it acted more than just on instinct. Like the other beasts, it will surely return when the dungeon resets itself...but will it remember what happened? Is it even considered the same being?
Hans wondered what the winter guardian will be like....but then that made him question something else.
"Hey." Hans looked over to the solar mage before continuing. "If that was the guardian of Autumn...I wonder why we have not come across a Spring and Summer entity..." Hans was genuinely curious...but this might have to wait. Hans sensed something shifting with his ki, and looked forward around the same time his partner picked up something. Whatever it was, it was nearly camouflaged in the snow, but thanks to Griswold's solar magic, they were not too hard to see, not that it mattered much to Hans as long as these creatures stayed within his range.
There were about six of them, fox-like creatures with snowy fur. They circled the duo and one of them attempted to shoot a wispy fire-like magic at the solar mage, but he was able to deflect it with his sword. Hans placed that Sinister Protection spell back onto the solar mage again before turning his attention back to the enemies. The foxes growled....but they were just as "threatening" as the previous beasts. One of them attempted to fire their magic at Hans which he rushed in and deflected it with his protected arm! The fire left behind some frost which made the dark mage raise an eyebrow, but it eventually faded away. So their fire didn't exactly burn which made sense given the theme of this area, but it didn't matter either way. They would not be able to harm the dark mage.
Continuing his rush, Hans waited for the fox to attempt to pounce him before slicing its throat while it was in midair with his word. The fox fell to the ground, lifeless and as that happened, another fox fired a barrage of frozen flames at both the dark mage's back and some at his sword-like golem which continued to float beside him, but it did no harm since Hans still has his defense spell over it as well. Hans briefly pondered using his golem to attack the next one, but decided that he would handle this himself. Hans left the golem there on standby and turned his attention to the next fox. Using his sword, Hans kicked up some of the snow on the ground and used it to temporarily blind the fox which hissed and growled in confusion before falling silent from a blade to the head. While Hans pulled his sword out of the fox's head, another one pounced at the man from behind and bit down on the dark mage's neck which was forming more frost around it! It had a good grip on Hans, but other than that, the bite did nothing else to him due to his dark shell.
Hans leaped back, ramming his back against a nearby tree which both caused the fox to fall off as well as caused a lot of snow to fall from the top of the tree, trapping both the dark mage and fox in a pile! It didn't last long though as Hans was able to break free from the pile with one slash, causing the snow to fly almost everywhere. The fox was also freed, shaking its body to get the snow off of it before firing more wispy flames at the man. Hans tanked some of the attacks and deflected the rest with well-timed maneuvers of his blade. The fox then launched itself at Hans, attempting to fire at him at point-blank, but then the dark mage thrust his sword into its mouth at the same time, creating a small explosion of wispy flames that tore the fox's body apart!
That was three down, and now three to go which Hans believes his partner can handle.

It was not surprising that Hans was the first one out of the two to strike again, which gave Griswold a moment to see exactly what he should be expecting from these snow foxes. Not that it would have mattered a whole lot in the end, though the elven mage simply had a curiosity that was hard to sate, one that required him to get at least some level of insight into the abilities of animals, monsters, mana beasts and whatever else did not fit into one of those categories. It was just the kind of person that he was, believing that knowing such things might help him out in the future. And up until now, he could honestly say that by going far and wide across and outside of the borders of the country while gathering all manners of combat information he could, it had paid off several times. He had even imparted some of the things he had come to figure out on others.
For instance, he had fairly recently shared what information he had on trolls with a junior member of the black bulls squad, figuring it could help her from getting crushed by one of them. That, and he hoped that the knowledge he gave her would have helped her out in the sense that she might be able to keep from fighting entirely, given how trolls were among those creatures one could actually converse with, albeit on a childlike level. So as he watched the foxes trying to pull off their attacks through means of a more mobile form of blue fire, it seemed that they died just like any other mammal when a blade was to be pulled through their flesh. While that might have sounded strange, it was actually not nearly as weird as one might believe. After all, so far, a fair amount of the creatures they faced here were poisonous, some even releasing a toxin upon death.
So the fact that these creatures which seemed capable of casting illusions and creating a form of cold fire were now known to him to at least some extent meant that, in the future, he could maybe even take others to this place for the sake of training them. This time around however, it was he who was undergoing the training, and so far, he could say that this place was not nearly as challenging as it was made out to be. While it helped a lot to have someone like Hans around, the fact that he himself had never felt threatened by anything in this place up until this now was speaking volumes. So while Hans dispatched his share of the party, Griswold used one of his more contained explosive spells, releasing several spheres from his hand that launched themselves into a fairly strategic area surrounding the foxes, allowing the resulting explosions to meet one another in the center and incinerate them on contact.
While this was merely a recent adaptation, the original spell had been way more simple. Fire a single projectile, make it erupt and hope that the explosion would hurt someone enough to shift the tide of the battle. Of course, at the time of its creation, Griswold himself had also been a lot weaker, making this the strongest spell that he had in his arsenal at the time. But through means of increasing both his offensive power, as well as his level of mana control, he had been able to increase the amount of projectiles he could dish out while keeping the level of mana he would need to expend the same. While a simple enough trick at its core, it required rather precise levels of mana control that not everyone had. Luckily for him though, he was naturally gifted at these things it seemed, allowing him to pick it up in little to no time at all and make even his weakest and most useless spells feel like they had a contribution to make.
The sad part about all of these creatures being killed though was the fact that they could not sit down and enjoy the spoils of the kill, because these foxes for instance were cooked more than well enough to be eaten. But as a personal rule, Griswold had learned never to eat a single damned thing he encountered in a dungeon, especially after the time he almost sat down to have some food that had been covered in an illusion, which almost kept him from noticing in time that he was about to eat human remains. Luckily for him, he hadn’t actually gotten to the point of eating, because given the amount of meat he ate in general, he just might have liked it.
FLOOR 4 | ROOM 2
Leaving the almost perfectly cooked remains of the snow foxes for what they were, the time had come to venture what was likely going to be yet another path past a river leading up to what he could only imagine was inevitably going to be another meadow. So as the two made their way from the snowy forest clearing and further along the only path that didn’t end up in a wall of trees knit so tightly together that it made it look like only half as impenetrable as it actually was, Griswold pondered on what Hans had brought to the table. It was indeed a strange thing to consider, for the autumn guardian was the only one they had faced in what could be considered three separate seasons. If anything, they should have encountered the guardians of spring and summer before meeting with it, yet for some reason that had not happened.
“That’s actually a valid point, and one I can’t possibly begin to answer. The one we encountered was asleep when we found it, so maybe it didn’t have the time to escape the scene in time. But that makes no sense if you take into account how it was the guardian of the region….”
Pondering on the subject as they did indeed encroach upon yet another river, it seemed that this one was completely frozen over. Doing exactly as they had done in the previous installment, he would keep following the river until they would undoubtedly reach a clearing, but not before they would have to fight some other peculiar creature. By now, maybe it was a good thing that they had caught on to what was really going on here, as it allowed them to vaguely predict what was going to be coming next. But for all that it was worth, as the followed the frozen river up to a frozen over pond attached to an equally frozen waterwall coming down from a rocky ledge covered in snow, the whole guardian issue still bothered Griswold. He had a hard time figuring out exactly why they had only met a single guardian, especially since the reason why was perhaps that the guardians didn’t revive the same way as the others.
Thinking that maybe, when a guardian was killed, another had to take its place rather than the same one constantly reconstituting over a period of time, it would explain why they had only met the one. Maybe the other two were simply not chosen yet, or maybe they just took longer to reform. Believing the former to be more legitimate than the latter, he couldn’t make sense out of it no matter how hard he tried. Leaving the issue off for what it was, they continued to approach the ledge and the frozen waterfall, which meant having to cross the frozen pond. Stomping in place to make sure exactly how thick the ice was here, there was no sign of cracking or any sounds being made beneath the surface that might mark the place as being unfit for walking upon, let alone fighting upon. One thing was certain though, if they were to be attacked here, using spells would likely result in them both taking a very chilly dive.

As it sets flammable terrain, objects and living beings on fire, it can quickly turn a building used by someone to hide or hole up in from a safe haven into a furnace one will want to quickly escape. "When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back."
With another well-controlled area spell, Griswold finished off the remainder of these enemies and the duo was able to proceed to the next room. Hans did not share the same thought as the solar mage regarding the cooked remains of those fox mana beasts. If they were boar it probably would've crossed his mind then, but it has been quite a while, years in fact since Hans used to hunt. Hunting was something that he needed to pick up on back then if he wanted to survive. The former merc used to hunt a wide variety of animals, but boar meat was something he took a liking to the most. The taste of fox meat was never bad, but it wasn't particularly his favorite either. But when it comes to survival, being a picky eater was something that didn't cross the dark mage's mind....unless he wanted to starve to death.
Hans' eyes set on the frozen river bed as he was a little lost in thought about nothing of importance, but he was still able to keep up with the solar mage just find as they walked through this new area. For the most part, Hans is never the type to let his guard down, even in relatively simple places like this dungeon, but he couldn't help falling into a bit of a lull from the calm snowy nature of this area. This section felt peaceful when not having to deal with mana beasts, and the dark mage enjoyed these moments.
Griswold had then brought up what Hans was talking about earlier regarding the spring and summer guardians...or lack thereof. Hans figured that the elf would not have a proper answer to this as well, but this was something that the dark mage couldn't keep to himself. It was probably something that didn't need much thought put into anyway since dungeons tend to go by their own rules that sometimes lack reason. There could just not be a guardian for those two seasons, plain and simple...but even for a dungeon, that did not make sense to Hans. Despite how bizarre dungeons can be, they still seem to follow a pattern, and the guardian feels like an important part of this dungeon's pattern. Why would only autumn have such an entity but not the previous two seasons? Will winter have a guardian? Perhaps an answer for this lies deeper in....
The frozen riverbank that the duo was following soon led them to a large lake that was equally frozen. Hans imagined that ice skaters would love it here since he can tell from appearance alone and by how cold the area is that this ice was pretty sturdy. Well, the chilling temperatures might drive any potential skaters away....
With how large the frozen lake is, there was no way the duo could walk around it. Hans crossed his arms and looked forward as the solar mage tested the ice. It was certainly durable enough to support their weight, but it was still risky to walk across, especially with more mana beasts most definitely lurking about. The dark mage then glanced over at his floating sword-like golem, and had an idea. They couldn't walk around the frozen lake, but nothing was stopping them from flying across.
Hans used his mana tether to lower the golem horizontally and stood upon its blade like a board like he did earlier. He wasn't exactly sure if Griswold could keep his balance on something like this, so instead of summoning another sword golem, Hans used his grimoire to summon the raven one back which stood patiently on the ground next to the solar mage. "I imagine flying across will be easier." Hans claimed, gesturing at the raven golem. If the solar mage decided to get on it, it would obey Griswold's commands for the most part as instructed by Hans. If he wishes to go another way or through the pond, Hans won't stop him, but the raven golem will take to the air and follow Hans either way.
Flying a bit over the lake, Hans looked around at the snowy surroundings once more, his eyes soon taken notice of an entire waterfall frozen solid, having fell victim to this unforgiven weather as well. This winter area was not only reminding Hans of part of his childhood, but also what happened to Aries Garse last Yuletide. His "childhood town" was nearly engulfed in a blizzard as part of an attack from the self-proclaimed guardian of Yule. The grouchy reindeer despised that town, believing that its people took advantage of Yuletide for their own selfish reasons. But Hans and Suna were able to reason with the guardian...after having to deal with its army of snowmen and other schemes. A part of Hans hopped that the winter guardian if there is one and the yuletide protector were one in the same, but realistically, that seemed unlikely.
As Hans and presumably Griswold continued, they would come across snowy ledges, once again, Hans ki senses would detect hostile ki signatures. As he started to hear growling, Hans looked up to see six bobcat-like mana beasts looking down menacingly at the mages. With a roar from one of the beasts, all six of them dropped down, attempting to pounce on the duo! Hans was able to steer clear out of each of their ways, causing them to land on the frozen lake unless some managed to get to the solar mage. Hans figured that with those beasts on the lake, they wouldn't be able to move properly....but that was not the case.
The bobcats were running across the frozen lake with ease, as if it were normal ground to them. It was clear that they were in their element here...it only made sense. "Hmm..." Instead of just flying away from them, Hans turned his sword golem around, and flew at the mana beasts! Once he was close enough, Hans waited for the bobcats to pounce again before flying upwards, causing the beasts to fall upon each other! The beasts struggled to get out of the pile they created, and the moment one of them managed to break free, Hans dove down, and sliced its head off before going back up into the air! One of the bobcats knocked the lifeless corpse off of it and the rest of them were able to get back to their feet, but as they attempted to get themselves organized, Hans went right in and picked another bobcat off with his sword, slashing through its neck, but another bobcat tried using this as an opportunity to swipe at Hans with its claws before he could fully go up. The attack didn't damage the golem due to the dark shield still around it, but it still shook it a bit which caused Hans to nearly lose his balance, but he managed to recover.
Hans was now diving back down at the bobcat, but once he was close enough, the dark mage would jump off of the golem and land straight on the beast, piercing his sword through the back of its neck in the process! The creature fell to the ground, lifeless like the other two as Hans stood on top of it....

For what it was worth, Griswold was never really the person who would fly somewhere when he could walk, enjoying it when he could just make his way through the countryside on foot and see what was going on through the eyes of a commoner. It was one of those things the people in the big cities lacked, as they tended to just fly everywhere or get someone to create some fancy portal. It was that kind of thing that kept them removed from the normal folks that had to go everywhere by foot, horseback or by cart. And by keeping themselves removed from it, they would never be able to understand the struggles of average hard working peasants and commoners. At least that was part of his reasoning behind walking everywhere. This time however, since they were in what seemed like a looping dungeon that kept rehashing the same location over and over again, he was all for the idea of flying past it.
Hopping on, the two made their way off of the frozen forest floor and into the sky, though not so high that they could not see where they were going. Due to the density of the forest in some places, it was fairly easy to see where the dungeon wanted them to go, and where they should not be going. Truth be told, Griswold had never bothered to try and steer away from the “beaten path” as it were, to go against the directions of the dungeon and see what was in the areas that they were not actually supposed to be headed into. Maybe one day he would bother checking that out and see what would happen, though now was not that day. He hadn’t come here for sightseeing and trying out new things after all, he had come here to see what a fellow swordsman could do, see how they guy’s magic worked and whether it was why he had become a royal knight without going through the trials, and obviously to make himself stronger in the process.
So when Hans noticed their new enemies waiting for them at the top of the ledge, it seemed that they had made a smart call by flying towards their next destination, as it kept the creatures from leaping down on them from the high ground. And if he knew anything, it was that the high ground was something that was worth having in a battle, maybe not so much in a magic battle though. These feline creatures, which sent their attacks into the air by roaring and causing icy winds to tear forth. Because they had to pick between two targets, they shot their attacks at both him and Hans, though they could avoid the majority of the attacks. Breaking away from where the bird golem was, the dark mage went on the offensive first, though Griswold was not about to stay behind. Instructing the bird to do a dive towards the ledge, he made sure the felines would be fixated on the bird before leaping off and severing on clean in half with his blade.
The downward momentum mixed in with the sheer size of this sword was more than enough to break the beast off at the spine and leave it dead on the floor, though Griswold could not just stop there. Behind the large cats, Hans had already begun killing, making his way through two of them already before Griswold could even finish off the one. Whether out of fear or out of a misplaced attempt at taking him out in one fell swoop, two of the remaining three animals dashed at Griswold in an attempt at pushing him to the ground and ripping out his jugular, though they had not yet met his sword and knew not what it was capable of. Once they were in range, two thorns shot forth from the blade, growing in length and rapidly covering the distance to the two beasts. Aiming one at each, the thorn ripped through their bodies and lacerated them from within, bringing upon them a rather painful end, but a necessary one.
Making sure that both of the animals were in fact dead, and not near death and suffering by beheading the both of them one by one, he pulled the crystalline green sword through the snow in an attempt at getting the blood and bits off of it before he could return it to the holster on his back. With these creatures all being deceased, the trees once again parted ways, which could really only mean one thing at this point. Having been through this plenty of times already, he knew that Hans knew just as wall as him that what would be awaiting them ahead would be some sort of meadow filled with monsters aiming to kill them. Mounting the bird golem again, Griswold wondered whether or not this place would again have a guardian, or if maybe the autumn guardian had been a one time kind of deal. Asking the bird to take him up and into the next area, all he could do now was ponder on it and wait, as the answer to his question would be given soon enough.
FLOOR 4 | ROOM 3
Carried on the back of the golem, it wasn’t long before he got carried through the opening in the forest that had in fact taken them straight into another large clearing. And surely enough, as soon as they did, it seemed that there was indeed another guardian waiting for them as they approached. Matching the overall theme of this area within the dungeon, the creature had white fur and tree-like antlers that matched the surrounding forest. It was without a doubt the same kind of mana beast as the autumn guardian, but whether or not it was weaker or stronger remained to be seen. Sighing ever so slightly at the sight of it, he already dreaded the thought of having to kill it, as he would have much rather gone up against a band of raiders or warriors that had sided with an evil king. Even if it sounded strange, Griswold had a much easier time killing bad people than he did with animals.
As the golem was making its way down to the ground, Griswold managed to shoot a last couple of glances around the area to see that there were in fact more creatures on the way to aid the guardian. Having likely seen him fly on in on the massive black avian, it was no surprise that they came rushing in without the guardian having to even call upon them in the first place. So as the golem landed in front of the guardian, Griswold had already seen some of the foxes from before rushing into the clearing, though he also noticed some creatures that seemed like owls. This was actually a first, as most of these clearings seemed to just call in creatures and animals they had already fought at some point before, though these owls were an entirely new arrival. And seeing as they knew nothing about them yet, that already made them more dangerous than the foxes with their cold flames.
"Do you desire power for yourself, for others, or for no one?"
Again, a guardian came out by posing a certain question to the two of them. This time, it was far less cryptic than the previous, asking in rather clear terms why the two of them desired power. And just as had been the case before, Griswold could not presume to know why Hans did what he did as he did not know him well enough to know what drove him, though he could answer for himself. That said though, the answer really wasn’t that simple, as he did not just seek power for others or for himself, he sought power because of what it could mean, what it could represent for the poor and the downtrodden. For him, getting more powerful meant that the limits as to what he could do were pushed further up, it meant being able to help more people against more powerful threats, and it allowed him to become a symbol for those that had lost faith in the system and wanted to believe in one of their own. And that was why he sought, no, why he desired power.
“I desire power for myself and others, as my power matches the amount of people I can save and the kinds of threats I can save them from. While it might be a simpler answer than you’d like, that’s about all I can say about it.”
Whether or not it was actually the case that the creature did not much care for his simple and down to earth answer, it stomped the ground violently, causing the very ground which seemed to just be a blanket of snow on top of a field of grass to turn into a mighty avalanche. Striking before Griswold even had the time to act against it, the snow enveloped him and caried him back several tens of meters towards the entrance in the trees leading them from one area into the next. Once there, the avalanche stopped, leaving him to fend for himself in an attempt at breaking free. Having no idea whether or not Hans had been swept up by it as well or if he had managed to brave the rather sudden assault upon their position, he hoped that he would have been the only one that had gotten hit. Even if that meant the dark mage would need to fight alone, it at least meant that they were not both prone to being attacked.
So while he was buried under snow and only had so much oxygen to work with while submerged, he began building up his solar mana so as to burst and melt his way out of it as soon as he could. For the moment however, he remained stuck and was incapable of really doing much.
Tldr: Used the sword to kill one cat and the trigger ability to kill the two others. Traveled into the next area to meet the guardian, answered its question and got buried in an avalanche, leaving Hans to fend for himself. Good times.

"When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back."
Hans continued to allow the solar mage to use his golem even after hopping back onto the raven from his sword golem. Like the previous areas, the trees were parted and the duo was now in the next area. Again, the two mages were in another meadow, this time coated in snow. Hans noticed the repetitiveness of this dungeon a little while back but didn't think much of it. Now, the dark mage was wondering if these even were new areas that looked similar. What if they were actually going through a loop, heading to the same exact area over and over while it changes seasons and threats? To have something like that happen there would have to be some form of illusion magic at play, at least that's what Hans thinks. But if that was the case, he would've sensed it by now unless his ki sensory isn't strong enough which wouldn't really surprise him. Or perhaps it could be some other force at play?
Hans sat at the back of his raven golem, thoroughly cleaning his sword with his cloth. The dark mage wiped the blood and dirt off of his blade, making sure to take his time with it. Even though he was still in the middle of a hostile dungeon, Hans was not going to skip out on this. If anything were to happen, the dark mage could just use his sword-golem which continued to fly next to the raven one, going at a speed to match the dark bird. His ki was also active, allowing him to stay alert of his surroundings without having to actually look around. So far, nothing has happened yet, but like with the previous areas, this moment of rest will not last long. Fortunately, the man was just about done cleaning his sword. He looked at the blade carefully, making sure that each side was void of any dirt or damages.
Seeing nothing wrong with the sword, Hans smiled lightly before placing it back in its sheath...not that it will stay there for long...nor stay clean. That small smile of his vanished the moment Hans picked up on a ki signature...which felt familiar. Looking up, the dark mage could see a figure at the end of this area, standing in front of a large wall of snow. So there appears to be a winter guardian after all...which only made Hans even more curious about the spring and summer guardians, or lack thereof.
Once his golem landed, Hans hopped off of the raven, keeping his eyes on the guardian as he did. Even though the man was watching the snowy buck, his ki senses were on alert, picking up four separate signatures. Two of the signatures were of those winter foxes, but the other two were signatures that Hans had not felt before. This caused him to look away from the guardian and up to the trees close by. There were two owl-like mana beasts resting above, looking back at the duo with their unyielding stares. These beasts were new, which meant that the two mages were going to have to be cautious not only about the guardian but those two as well.
Just like the autumn guardian, the winter buck asked a question, one a little more clear than the previous. "What are we fighting for...?" Hans muttered what was basically the gist of that question. That was an interesting question, one that further made the dark mage see these guardians differently compared to intelligent foes he has faced in previous dungeons. Usually, they came off as more sadistic, evil, boastful, but when it comes to these two guardians....it felt more like a test if anything. Hans certainly knows what he's fighting for, but before he could say anything, the solar mage answered once again for himself.
Power for himself and others...It was a simple answer, but one that still held great weight. Hans could feel that weight, the determination, and he was sure the guardian could too. Thought, the creature did not say anything else after that, nor did it wait for Hans to give his own answer before making its first move. The buck stomped the ground violently similar to its autumn counterpart, causing the ground to shake, but the stomp itself was the least of their worries. The stomping caused a shockwave that sent the wall of snow behind the guardian crumbling down, creating an avalanche!
"Good grief..." the dark mage muttered before quickly commanding his sword-like golem to get on its side so that he can stand on top of it. As the avalanche neared, Hans hovered up high enough to avoid the snow. He then turned his attention to both his raven golem and Griswold, only to see them both get caught up in the avalanche!
"Dammit..." he muttered once more. He was hoping that the solar mage would get out in time, but it didn't look like he was fast enough. Despite taking a bit of damage, the dark mage's bird golem was able to free itself from the pile of snow and awaited Hans' command. "Help him out of the snow." The dark mage said and his golem flew off a bit towards where it could sense the solar mage's mana.
Hans then turned his attention back to the buck which was now standing gracefully on top of some of the snow pile. With a gesture of its head, the mana beasts started their attack. One of the foxes ran at Hans, but as it did, the creature formed multiple copies of itself, all of them running at the dark mage while hopping around in the process, taking each other's place multiple times to try and confuse the man. Hans was not phased by this attempt at tricking him however. He may lack the ability to properly sense mana, but his ki senses made up for that. Out of all of those foxes, only one of them had a ki signature that truly stood out, and with that, the dark mage rushed at the mob, running straight through the illusions! He quickly unsheathed his sword and went straight for the real deal, slicing that fox in half!
The remaining illusions vanished as the fox was slain, but the dark mage wasn't done yet. Instead of sticking behind and letting its lackies do the work for it first, the winter guardian rushed at full force at Hans! It tried ramming into the dark mage with its antlers, but the attack was useless on impact thanks to his defensive spell. Hans attempted to retaliate with a slash, but the buck timed it so it could dodge out of the way by the skin of its teeth! Hans was going to lunge forward at it, but then one of those owls creepily flew up next to Hans, letting out an eerie noise that started to make him feel a little drowzy. "Ngh..." The dark mage's vision was a bit fuzzy, once again falling victim to some tired-inducing curse. But the dark mage was able to react faster to it this time and used his mana tether to send his sword-like golem flying straight at that owl, piercing through its chest!
The moment the owl fell, Hans was brought out of that trance, and just in time since the guardian attempted ramming into Hans again! This time, the dark mage grabbed onto one of its antlers with his free hand, and looked the creature in the eyes.
"I used to seek power for myself...but not anymore." Hans claimed, finally answering the buck's earlier question. "I now seek the power to protect those I cherish.....like her." Hans claimed, referring to his friends, those he considers family, and certain sound mage. "I will be their shield." With that, Hans chopped the buck's head off with one swing of his sword, swiftly ending it. Hans was no longer that selfish mercenary...He was a man who has found his resolve.
But even as the winter guardian's remains morphed into snow...the last fox and owl remained...and they did not look all too pleased.

Before he would run out of breathable air while laying under a thick blanket of snow, Griswold had planned on using his solar magic to simply blow away all of the white frozen stuff in a fairly large area. But when a large black claw came poking through in an attempt at digging and pulling him out of it, he figured there really wasn’t a whole lot of a point to wasting his mana here for no reason. As such, he would just allow the bird to do what it had been told to do and drag him out, which took little to no time at all to do luckily. As soon as he emerged and got put on top of the snow, the first thing he did was take a deep breath, which might have seemed a bit theatrical were it not for the fact that all of that snow pushing down on him from all directions had left him without oxygen for almost a minute. But these were the kinds of experiences one would only get when in the field, when one struggled with the actual situation.
Now he knew that being in an actual avalanche was something he never wanted to be in again, having experienced the threat first hand. Never again. Brushing the snow off of his clothing before it could melt and soak into it, he saw how Hans had already left one of the foxes and one of the owls in shambles, popping out of the snow just in time to see him attacking and eventually beheading the winter guardian. Whereas the other had been blasted into bloody bits before turning into leaves and blowing away, the severed head and the large body of the buck just turned into two piles of snow. Leaving just two of the animals, Griswold could not be arsed to get his sword and run all the way over to them. Instead, he used their fixation on Hans for killing their own kind and the protector of their realm in order to strike them both down with one of the spells he had used rather frequently already.
Sending several spheres of solar mana towards them and incinerating them in the explosion while making it so Hans would only really feel the heat which was just slightly warmer than what one might consider gentle, Griswold figured it would save him the trouble of having to fight the other creatures too, not to mention drying his clothes and warming him up in the process. It was the least he could do for getting dug out of the large volume of snow he had been buried under after all. While he would have thanked the dark mage sooner, the fact that the beasts in the area had been slain led Griswold to remain cautious for a bit. For whenever this kind of thing happened, the forest itself was quick to respond to it, changing the area as they stood in it to allow them access to whatever place remained within this dungeon.
FLOOR 5 | BOSS ROOM
Obviously, this time really would not be any different. For as the world around them started moving, the treeline made way for them to leave this place of winter, though it made Griswold wonder as to what they would be making their way into next. Having faced Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, there were no seasons left that they had not yet faced, so part of him imagined that what they would venture into next would be the exit, though nothing could have been less true that that. No longer seeing the point in flying into their next destination, what with the entrance being as close as it was, Griswold gestured over to it as he began making his way over on foot. Even from where he stood now, he could see all sorts of colors radiating from the next area, reminding him of the sight of the northern light which would dance in the sky above on some rare occasions.
“Thanks for the save back there. I would have gotten myself out by exerting a good portion of my mana, though I imagine we’ll be needing it for whatever is up ahead. Because when you think about it rationally, we’ve beaten the four seasons, meaning that whatever else is up there either controls it, or simply transcends it, and I’m not sure which of those is worse.”
Wondering what Hans might have to say about it, Griswold honestly hoped that whatever was up there, it would actually pose a challenge to them. Aside from the airborne poisons and the avalanche, most of the enemies that had been thrown at them were not exactly something that ran the risk of killing either one of them. That wasn’t saying that they were insanely strong, it just meant that the beings in this dungeon were not strong enough to hold them, and that was the simple truth of the matter. Even the guardians of the region had more or less been put to death with a single attack, which just meant that they had overestimated what this place was capable of. That said though, they weren’t at the end yet, as Griswold could clearly sense something up ahead as they were entering the new area.
What with the bright and colorful lights dancing across the sky and along the trees, it was clear that this place was not bound by any seasons, but was in fact a magical forest that followed only its own rules. Truly, this was what Griswold envisioned when he thought about how dungeons created their own laws of nature. Aside from the colors, he could sense natural mana all around them, from the roots all the way up to the green treetops, making it into a truly beautiful location, by far the most out of the five they had now encountered. But instead of having a large amount of actual wildlife frolicking about that turned violent as soon as Griswold and Hans passed, Griswold could only sense three distinct sources of mana that wasn’t coming from the forest itself. Continuing to lead the way to see what it was coming from, he made his way through the tree-line to see a strange tree.
Possessing what seemed like an actual face, Griswold imagined it was merely that until it moved its lips and eyes, causing the greenery above it which actually looked a lot like hair when he focused on it to wave about. As the tree exhaled deeply, it seemed to sigh in a deep and grumbly manner, which brought two large bucks out of the tree-line and bringing them up to the left and right of the tree. From what Griswold could tell by this, it likely meant that this tree was going to be their final adversary, all while being backed up by the guardians of spring and summer. Looking over at Hans and pointing at the two large bucks as if checking to see if he did indeed see what he was seeing, there was now no longer a reason to wonder what might have happened to the remaining guardians as they were merely protecting their … whatever the tree was.
"Do you defy your nature, or do you master it?!"
One thing was sure though, Griswold had not exactly expected the tree to be the one doing the talking. What with the two other guardians being right there, and them having asked the questions up until now, it seemed only fair for them to do so again now. Not that it mattered, as they would all end up meeting the same fate as the other guardians and their compatriots so both he and the dark knight would be able to make their way out of this place again and see how much or if they had grown at all. The question itself however was slightly more interesting as it made Griswold think quite deeply about which of the two was applicable to himself and his situation. He had after all been born into a community of those with elven genes that chose to live like the elves by respecting nature and secluding themselves from humanity and their issues, struggles and barbarism.
They did not kill for the sake of eating, as they had large gardens and vineyards where they magically grew their food at an accelerated rate, meaning the only time they actually ate any meat was at times when a large mana beast attacked the settlement and could not be swayed to leave. That, and aside from respecting nature, Griswold was taught to respect life and not take it if there were any other options. In that regard, he had grown the most, as he had taken quite a bit of lives of animals and a select few humans because he believed them to be beyond redemption, or because the animals in questions could not be made to leave. So while he at times felt like he had strayed too far from the beliefs of the elves, the more he thought about it, the more he came to figure out that he was merely doing as they had done for the longest time.
So when it came to defying his nature, the only way he had done that was when Asmodeus had triggered the shattering, which had removed his settlement and all of the people he had ever known from the face of the planet, leaving him alone to fend for himself. Because of that event, he had come across the Cromwell family, struggling to maintain their farm yet still finding it within themselves to feed him and nurse him back to health. It was because of them that he had come to see the beauty that existed within the forsaken realm, and what had pushed him towards wanting to become a mage and a knight so that he could look after these peasants and maybe one day repay the favor. While he did not call that something as strongly worded as one defying their own nature, he would rather go ahead and say that he hasn’t really done either of the two.
“Neither. I haven’t defied my roots, I’ve elaborated upon them in my own way by taking the teachings that had been imparted upon me all throughout my youth and made them my own. While I imagine becoming someone who lives and fights among humans was likely not what my people had imagined for me, it is where I deviated from the path others put me on and carved a new path that is entirely my own.”
Feeling like he had to elaborate more on his answer now than he had at the previous locations because they had made their way to the end of this place, it almost felt like something that had to happen, even though there was really no one forcing him into it. Now, it came down to Hans to give his answer before they could begin their final battle in this place.

"When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back."
With the winter guardian and its underlings slain, the area around the two mages had started to morph once more. Hans can feel the shift in the ki which made him wonder...what was next? This was the last season that the two mages have conquered clearly, so he imagined that after this it would be the end, but at the same time, the dark mage knew that he should've known better at this point. Not all dungeons are that simple. Some were known to be quite bizarre and do not completely follow the theme it started out with. This reminded the dark mage of that dungeon that temporarily popped up in Aries Garse. It was a palace of ice and snow...but the top of it was consumed by flames, ruled by a being that claimed to be the embodiment of the sun. It was something the dark mage wasn't expecting...but with these dungeons, one should be prepared to expect the unexpected.
The area had formed into what appeared to be the entrance of the dungeon, making the dark mage briefly wonder if they had even left this spot the moment they entered. Hans didn't linger on this thought for long as he shifted his attention towards the mystical colors filling the place which were certainly not here when the two mages first arrived. This only made it certain that the two were not finished yet. The ki here is strong...stronger than the previous areas. The energy coming from this area did not feel threatening though...at least not right now. There was something majestic about this ki...its beauty hard to put into words. It felt like Hans was experiencing the source of the seasons...no, of nature itself. This felt like all four seasons were in perfect harmony....and it was such a wonderful feeling.
Griswold started to speak, thanking the dark mage for the save back then and such. "Oh, no problem." The dark mage said before listening to the rest the solar mage had to say. Hans had confidence that Griswold could've gotten out of that snow on his own, especially with magic that could easily melt through it, but as the solar mage said, it would probably be wise to save up some of that mana on something potentially more threatening than just snow. "Yeah..." Hans then looked back up at the lights. "Judging from the ki here, you might be right. It's as if...the essence of the four seasons had formed together to create this area." Hans claimed, saying what he was thinking earlier. So far, the creatures and even the guardians that the duo had faced were not much of a threat against the two mages. Naturally, most in these two's shoes would probably not think much of what may be the final area, but Hans wasn't the type to just take things lightly. Even weaker foes have the potential to take down much stronger opponents with the right preparation and tactics. Those faeries and mushroom beasts had curses that were able to affect both the dark and solar mages. If they weren't as prepared as they were, those weak foes could've potentially beat them.
Whatever the duo was about to face, Hans had a feeling that it would be not as simple as anything they have faced previously here.
After summoning his raven golem back into his grimoire, Hans followed a bit behind the solar mage as he continued to take in the area. This magical aura filling the area was all around from the ground all the way up to the healthy green trees. Hans remembered when he first set foot in this dungeon along with Suna, Valo, and Verena. He remembered that Verena seemed particularly drawn to this place, and now, the dark mage could see why she must've felt strong mana here. Not just because it's a dungeon, but because of this particular area itself. As the duo continued to walk, Hans would start picking up something else. Three different ki signatures...separate from the area itself.
Hans' eyes were now focused on a tree, a large one...that had a weird carving in the center that he could've sworn resembles a face. No...It is a face. Two other figures then made their presence known, coming up from behind this odd tree. They were bucks...and by the looks of it, they were the missing guardians of spring and summer. Hans glanced over at the solar mage and gave him a nod. This explained the guardians' absence then. Hans was expecting them to ask a question like the other guardians, but instead, it was the tree itself that asked something....
'Do you defy your nature, or do you master it?'
Hans repeated that question in his head. Unlike the last two questions, this one made the dark mage think a little more. Nature....So many ways this could be taken which only served to remind Hans of his past, and the various forms of 'nature' that he had to endure. Griswold's answer was something Hans wasn't expecting. He had chosen neither, causing the dark mage to look over at him, putting his own thoughts on hold. The man's words...Hans had truly started to respect this man. He was someone with a strong will, someone capable of carving his own fate as he pretty much described. Griswold certainly is an interesting person. Hans couldn't help, but give the guy a small but approving smile, followed with a nod before turning his attention back to the tree, his smile fading.
"Most of my life, I had to endure the wrath of my nature." Hans claimed before looking away. "There were times where I believed it would consume me...and it almost did." Hans' eyes lowered slightly as he went silent for a few seconds before slowly shaking his head. "But...I have grown since then. I have learned how to defy my own nature...and forged a new one...." He slowly unsheathed his sword and pointed the tip of it in the direction of the tree. "One forged by the desire to protect." The nature Hans was referring to was his father who attempted to mold him into an obedient, future Diamond soldier...but he has steered away from that path, thanks to his mother, his mentor, and the people he has had the pleasure to meet along the way.
The dark mage's grimoire flipped a few pages and a dark aura formed around Hans, shaping into a suit of armor that resembles something a hunter would wear. It was The Hunt one of Hans' defense creation armor spells that specializes in speed.
With a command of that tree, the two guardians rushed forward, the embodiment of spring going after Griswold while the embodiment of summer went after Hans!
Hans could tell from the way that the summer guardian gracefully moves that it is much more agile and faster than the previous guardians, but thanks to Hans' spell, he was faster. The dark mage attempted to send his sword-like golem flying at the buck, but it hopped out of the way and fired its leaves from its antlers! The leaves were sharp, but did nothing to Hans' armor. He tanked the attack the rushed at the summer buck at full speed! He was within range and about to slash the buck, but then the dark mage sensed something traveling underneath the ground, and backed away! A root shot out of the ground, attempting to grab Hans but he moved out of the way in time. The dark mage looked over at the tree, knowing full well that it was the one who launched this attack. Hans used his mana tether to slice the root in half with his golem which appeared to do nothing to the tree...meaning it might have to be directly attacked.
With one of its branches, the tree was able to grab onto the golem and tossed it out of the way, but thanks to the defensive spell around it, it suffered no damage. The summer buck attempted to kick Hans with its back legs, but the dark mage slid out of the way and tried lunging at the buck's side, aiming to stab it in the side, but the tree saved it by wrapping its branches around Hans' wrist! The dark mage was able to get that branch cut off with his golem, but then the buck rammed Hans in the chest with its antlers. The dark mage wasn't phased, however, and pushed it off of him! It tried shooting more of its sharp leaves at Hans, but the dark mage was able to deflect most of them with his sword while the ones he missed simply hit his armor.
The summer buck stomped angrily, but its small tantrum would be put to an end as Hans swiftly sliced off the guardian's head, as he did to the autumn one. The body and head fell to the ground, and turned to leaves, but the roots shot up from the ground right under it and proceeded to hold Hans down by the legs. The tree then used more of its branches to grab a hold of Hans' arms and pinned him down to the ground. None of this damaged the man, but it was still inconvenient. "Strike the branches." Hans commanded his sword-like golem, and it swooped down and sliced right through both branches, freeing Hans' arms. He then used his mana tether to cut off the roots with his golem!
As Hans got back on his feet, the tree quickly attempted to restrain Hans again, getting his legs and one of his arms, but before it could get his other arm, the one where he was holding his sword, the dark mage threw his blade at the tree, and with that well-placed throw...he threw it straight in the center of its face!
The tree let out a pained screech as the roots holding Hans down started to die and fade. Soon the screech would stop, and then, the tree's branches would go limp, the leaves slowly falling off to the ground....

Feeling the protective spell around him as the battle began, Griswold had obviously set his sights on the tree, as it was the entity that seemed to be in charge of this place. However, his wish did not come true as one of the guardians had decided to make him his target. Having no choice but to oblige now that the challenge had been issued, the buck howled so loud it seemed to make the forest and the ground shake. However, the shaking beneath the soil turned out to be something else entirely, as roots erupted from the ground, sending chunks of earth around the place as the tree seemed to be more than capable of controlling the surrounding area to fight both the dark mage and himself. Using his sword to slice through the roots as soon as they came up, some of them manage to nick him before he could respond.
Luckily for him, the dark magic spell protected him from that level of superficial damage, so it wasn’t so much a cause for worry as much as the strange sweet smell that had filled the air. Noticing only after smelling it that the spring guardian had been shaking its body in order to release a large amount of whatever fragrance this was from all of the blossoms that adorned its antlers, whatever it was meant to do did not appear to affect Griswold much at all. Aside from making him sneeze a few times, which the buck did not seem to approve of. Charging right at him with its antlers, Griswold moved to the side while swinging his blade, using the momentum of his own move to clash against the charging buck. Severing one of the antlers as the beast passed him by, it appeared momentarily disoriented from the blow.
Using this moment of weakness and covering for it, various larger and thicker roots shot from the ground between Griswold and the buck, protecting the beast from harm while forcing Griswold back if he did not wish to be struck down by it. For what it was worth, he had gotten exactly what he had asked for when he wanted for a stronger opponent, he just hadn’t imagined that it would arrive in the shape of a tree. Not really having the luxury of watching to see what Hans was doing, he more or less knew enough when one of the mana signatures disappeared, meaning he had most likely managed to kill one of the guardians. And when that realization hit him, Griswold couldn’t stay behind either. So as soon as the roots retracted and the beast came charging at him, he used his solar ray in order to blast the creatures into bite-sized chunk of deer which soon after disappeared entirely.
Even though it had done so repeatedly, maybe the tree should not have split its focus between so many different targets, as it allowed Hans to land the killing blow, which had quite the effect upon their surroundings. As the tree and its two guardians disappeared, the forest itself began glowing brightly, so brightly in fact that it fully obscured his sight and disoriented him to the point where it felt like floating through a strange kind of void. Remaining for a certain amount of time, the light eventually faded, showing that they were no longer situated within the dungeon itself, but had been transported to the very entrance, if it could be called that. Looking around for a moment to fully get his bearings, it would seem that things were finally over, and that the dungeon had been defeated. Obviously this gave rise to a bunch of questions within Griswold’s mind, like why they had been taken out of the forest and placed back in the basin of Aristaeus.
Most other dungeons he had been in so far, and there were a couple, he and the people he had entered with had to find their own way out after making their way to the end and defeating whatever creature was running the place. But he wasn’t one to complain, as they had crossed quite a fair distance to get to the tree that lorded over the dungeon, and he wasn’t really looking forward to walking back if it could be helped. Sure, there was Hans’s bird golem that could carry them out, though Griswold wasn’t the type to ask for transportation, especially not for the sake of laziness. So as he just looked at the way into the dungeon in front of them, part of him wondered what would happen if he were to walk right back in, and if that meant all of the creatures they had slain together would already have popped right back into existence or not. A question worth pondering.
“Well, I guess we’ve done it. The guardians and whatever that tree was have been defeated, and the dungeon officially kicked us out. At least that’s what I imagine that bright light was, some sort of transportation spell.”
Wondering whether Hans knew more about what this was or not, he figured he would learn soon enough. That said, for however much it was worth, Griswold felt like he had at the very least managed to push the limits of his own capabilities by at least a little bit, though that was not so much something that needed to come to question. More important than that, he had been given a chance to get better at wielding his sword, received some insights from someone who had been using a blade for far longer than he had by a long shot, and perhaps equally important, he had been allowed to practice a whole lot more when it came to controlling his mana. Because of how Hans was one for fighting in close proximity to the enemy, it gave Griswold the chance to temper his own destructive spells by using them in a manner that would exclude the dark mage from actually being caught up in it too.
“Alright, I guess that’s that. While this has been an informative and educational trip, there are still a few errands I need to run in the forsaken region. But this has been a great means of practice, both in preparation for the magic knight exams, as well as the upcoming battles against the archdemons. I hope you’ve managed to gain something from this too, and for however much it is worth, I appreciate the pointers. Have a safe journey back home.”
With that, Griswold popped his crystalline sword over his shoulders and locked it into its harness before whipping the black scarf over his shoulders and most of his back as a means of concealing a large portion of it. Feeling like doing so put most of the commoners he met at ease to some extent, there were also those who felt safe in the knowledge that Griswold was the one waving around the sword in that region of the country. Starting to wander away, he would soon leave Aristaeus’ basin behind him and make his way back to the forsaken realm in order to get some down to earth cooking from one of the local inns or taverns, as well as a much deserved pint of mead. Figuring he would be meeting the dark mage again soon enough, especially if the fights against the archdemons were to somehow go sideways, he imagined the man wouldn’t be needing any luck finding his way back home at all.

Spells Used: Name of Spell: Galactic Nucleus: Blazar Elemental Type: Solar Rank & Spell Type: Senior | Attack Creation Range & Speed: 80 meters | 40 m/s Mana Cost: 30 mp | 15 mp sustain Stats Effected: +6 to Power Applicable Perks: “Overpowered” Description: A more powerful version of the solar flare (lunar swirl) spell, Galactic Nucleus: Blazar is a spell that compresses and fires a massive amount of solar mana from the user into a specific direction, following a straight line. Making the body of the user radiate with light before the beam erupts forward, it is initiated in exactly the same manner as Quasar, allowing for a surprise element towards those that are familiar with his spells. Using the “ammo” rules, the caster is capable of preventing allies of being hit by the beam. During the day, the spell takes on an orange hue, taking on a silver blue hue after dark.

"When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back."
Sensing a ki signature fading, Hans knew that Griswold had finished off the spring guardian on his part. With the way he handled the autumn guardian earlier, Hans had no doubts that he would be able to handle this on his own. After a bit of a struggle, the dark mage was able to deal the killing blow not just on the summer guardian, but the tree creature that was in command! The branches and leaves on the large oak tree had started to falter as well as die out. As this happened, Hans walked over to the dying tree and pulled his sword from out of its face effortlessly. He was going to turn around and say something to the solar mage, but then a blind light filled the area, causing Hans to instinctively cover his face with his arm! Was this one last attack!? The light was too bright to see, and whatever was happening around the two caused the ki in the area to alter and morph around, making it hard for the dark mage to sense anything. This was bad...or at least that's what the man thought.
The blinding light vanished, but it would take Hans a few seconds to lower his arm and for his vision to readjust. He was already sensing the ki around him before this, however, and it all felt...normal. With his vision back, Hans took a look around, and by the expression on his face, it was clear that he was a bit confused. The two mages were standing in the entrance of this dungeon...like how they started. Was this a trick? No...there was no trickery or illusions involved this time. This was it...the end. The two had conquered the dungeon, but instead of having to find their own way out, the dungeon did it for them? Hans looked at the entrance, blinking a few times as the armor around him faded as well as the dark shell that protected both him and the solar mage.
"That was...something." Hans spoke up as he summoned his sword-like golem back into the grimoire. He looked over at Griswold as he spoke, nodding in confirmation. He pretty much said what the dark mage was thinking. "This was certainly a bizarre dungeon." Hans added, looking once more at the entrance. He could still feel that strong ki signature coming from within almost as if nothing changed in there. Made sense since dungeons appear to reset themselves, but this particular dungeon was...interesting in how it functions.
Griswold had started speaking again, but what really caught the dark mage's attention was his talk about the Magic Knight Exams. "Hm, You're taking the exams too?" Hans was of course already aware of the solar mage being in the Royal Knights, but he didn't think he'd be taking the Magic Knight Exams as well. Similar to Griswold, Hans had to prepare for that and the upcoming battle against the Archdaemons among other things. There was no hope for Hans to get a proper rest at this point, not that he isn't used to working on little rest...but he'd be lying if he said he hadn't contemplated trying to sneak in a little nap.
Sliding his sword back into its sheath, Hans nodded before speaking. "Yeah. I think I was able to learn a little something here today." the dark mage crossed his arms before continuing. "Getting fight with you and experience your abilities first hand, I can see why you were chosen to be a Royal Knight." the dark mage was genuine with his words, not being the type to beat around the bush for the most part. "Wouldn't mind being in the same squad." Hans added, but that was entirely up to the exams.
But for now, the two have decided to part ways. "No problem. You as well." With that, Hans gave the guy one more nod before heading his own way, deciding not to use his golem to fly out. A nice walk was needed to help the dark mage think things through about what has happened here...as well as what may happen in the future. Though....the man wouldn't mind a drink as well and may stop by a nearby bar.
All and all, this was an interesting dungeon run.
