He makes snide comments the entire time and is easy to spot in the blizzard because of his sparkling red nose. Defeat him, either with your sheer strenght or with the power of Yule Cheer!

It had not been all that long ago that he had helped a butcher and his family out by providing them without enough lumber to make it through the cold months down in the common region. While he did not go there as often as the forsaken region, which was just his second home by this point, he knew that there were plenty of people there that needed the help just as much as the peasants of the forsaken region. So after he had dropped off a shiny bauble at the tree erected to the glory of Gnome, the earth spirit, the black knight had begun making his way back up north. Due to the winter months being when the most people died due to hunger as the fields would not produce and they had to live off of whatever rations they had, or died due to the cold, this specific winter seemed to be particularly brutal.

Even as he had been riding his horse through the country, he was glad to get out of the cold for a bit to help one of the local lords out for a change. While that was usually not his kind of deal, the fact that this particular noble had decided to help out the less fortunate in the area, there was no reason for him not to help or question his motivations. As long as people went out there to spend the money they had so much of for the sake of those that had so little, they were good people in his book. So with that out of the way, he had made the last stride towards the forsaken region, most notably the town of Aries Garse. Still wanting to check up on the aftermath of the traveling dungeon that had popped up to shower the inhabitants with fun during the day and torment at night, he hoped most of that was over with by now.

But when he laid eyes on the place, things appeared to be far worse than he had imagined. For whatever reason, the snowfall here was even worse than in other parts of the country he had seen up until now, prompting him to dash off into town and get a closer look. But the closer he got, the harder it became to properly maneuver through the streets due to the thick snow. Where it not for the fact that he was quite strong physically, he might have even been slowed down. Luckily, his constant training and the hard work he had done over the years paid off once again. Watching as the people were trying to dig others out of the snow, even if it meant they too might get in trouble proved just how difficult of a situation this truly was. For a town like this, to see people actively working to help one another out was hard to believe, but a very welcome sight to behold.

“Listen, if you can manage, keep up the good work. If you feel tired or if the cold is getting to you, get indoors so we won’t have to dig you out too.”

Making an attempt at organizing the chaos, some of the people ventured into one of the nearest buildings, stoking the fire up a bit higher and creating a place where those that had the cold set into their bones could warm up, recuperate and maybe get back into the action once they were once again ready to go. Not wasting any time himself when it came to digging as he knew that hypothermia would likely set in quicker than a lack of oxygen after being buried under a pile of snow, he watched the nearby rooftops as snow was piling up there. In time, that too would come plummeting down like a tiny avalanche, which would set their attempts at digging people out back by quite a lot. Doing his best to figure out whether he should be using his magic to get people out, he knew that the chances of his magic setting things on fire or outright destroying houses would become an even bigger issue than the snow itself.

Cursing under his breath at the uselessness of his magic in situations such as these, it once again became clear that purely offensive magics had a lot of drawbacks when not actually on a battlefield. For now, just using his hands to get to these people would have to do.

"Everything is theoretically impossible, until it is done!"

Frankie had been fairly busy the last few weeks. This winter season had been particularly harsh on a lot of the people in the area. Because of this there had been an abundance of jobs or missions to do that involved just getting out there and assisting the commoners of the area. Already he had gathered firewood and gave out meals for people who needed a helping hand during this time. Neither were caused by any sort of disaster. However, they served as definite proof of the dangers winter could bring. How the weather could make simple things immensely more difficult and dangerous to ones wellbeing. Without the firewood that struggling father might freeze to death with his children or try to go out on his own to collect some and end up freezing to death in the wilderness for his efforts. In the case of the food drive the weather made hunting, gathering, or trying to grow one's own food an arduous task and because of it many people simply could not get enough to eat without others helping them. Although for some people this time of the year was filled with joy and celebration with the Yule Festival, for many others it was a time of struggle and barely getting by. Even things that sounded simple enough could have a tremendous impact on people's survival during this season.

It was a rumor of something that sounded simple which had drawn Frankie out of his lab and back out into the world. Word had gotten to Frankie that Aries Garse was experiencing a sharper than usual cold front and larger than normal snowfall. As a city of the Forsaken Region and one of the few places that Frankie could go and purchase less then legal books, the mad mage was more than a little familiar with the location. He knew from experience that the city usually didn't hold snow long. Residual heat from the numerous fireplaces and overcrowding of the area meant that snow very quickly turned to slush as temperature rose from all that activity. That slush would often then look more like slippery mud as wagons, horses, and people milled about dirtying any white snow that might try to linger. However, if they were feeling the effects of a blizzard or a serious cold snap that would be a curious phenomena for them and one that Stein hypothesized they would not be equipped to handle. A town if exposed to something enough would eventually learn, adapt, and more easily overcome something if it did happen. A city by the beach would have all manners of plans in place for a hurricane, one nestled under a volcano likely would have evacuation procedures in the event it went off, etc. However, throw even a minor version of these events at a town that had never experienced anything of the sort before and watch the panic. A town that has never had an earthquake may riot under a small quickly passing one and a city that has never had snow pile up may find they are too slow to dig themselves out.

So, working of his hypothesis Frankie had made his way to Aries Garse. To his dismay his theory had proven correct. The people of the city must have assumed that the snow would melt, as it almost always did. Only the snow in this instance had not. A town accustomed to such weather would have gone out and periodically shoveled, ensuring the snow never got a chance to build up too greatly. Because the citizens of Aries Garse were used to very different weather conditions they had not done this. Now, they found some of their homes buried under so much snow it was next to impossible to dig themselves out very easily. Work that would have been tedious, but manageable had suddenly become very hard and even dangerous. Those buried might freeze to death as snow kept temperatures dangerously low or those working to assist might not take proper precautions and end up either hurting someone in their efforts or hurting themselves if they didn't manage their own wellbeing. How serious things could become even when confronted with seemingly simple problems.

Stein was moving towards the worst of the city when he heard a familiar voice. He wasn't sure of Griswold had heard similar rumors or if his being here was simply kismet. He would be the type to go out on a 'patrol' or something and run headfirst into this mess. Seeing as how the pair would be far more effective working together Frankie made his way over to the other man. "I am relieved to find you here Griswold. Better you then I directing any relief efforts." Frankie's words were genuine, he didn't see himself as a people person. His command style didn't exactly inspire others, he much rather leave it in the hands of someone who cared more than he. "Servants of Creation!" Frankie bellowed the command phrase for the spell, his grimoire generating Carbon Matter and then crafting it into the shape of five apes. As soon as they appeared he gave a nod of his head at each, sending them moving in various directions to begin digging out the immediate area and helping any survivors. "My golems won't get tired and they are perfectly suitable for simple tasks like digging people out. However, they may frighten people if it's the first thing they see as they are being dug out. Still, it is better than nothing." If those being rescued had any sense their relief over being freed would outweigh any fear that the first thing they saw afterwards were dark grey golems.

"During previous engagements with you I noticed you seem to have a sixth sense for things. I have yet to process what that is exactly, but is my hypothesis correct? If so you might be able to save us some time by using it and directing us to areas where people are genuinely trapped. Some of these houses might be buried, but with no one inside. It would waste precious time to dig out an area and find no one within." As if to emphasize his point Frankie lifted his hands once again and shouted, "Earthen Raptor!" This time instead of five apes it was four eagles that were created. At this point Frankie assumed Griswold was more than accustomed to the creatures and the mad mage waved at one of them in offering to Frankie. "Flying may save time in scouting the area." Whatever Griswold decided Frankie would follow his lead and direct his golems accordingly. Even the raptors might be able to assist by using their larger than normal wingspan and heavy bodies to move some of the snow. With luck they might be able to get most if not everyone who was truly trapped free in short order.

After feeling around in the snow for a bit, Griswold hoisted someone right out of the snow with one hand wrapped around their leg. Another example of why it was a good idea to bring some physical prowess into any given situation, when Franklin made his appearance on the scene and began utilizing his golems for the sake of digging the people out, things went quite a bit quicker. Since his magic, or rather the golems his grimoire contained were far more accustomed to this kind of situation than Griswold’s own magic was. That said, there was something he could do. Using his solar mana to radiate heat, the snow gradually began melting a bit, but not nearly enough to actually get it all out of the way or see where everyone was buried. This mana served only a single purpose, to keep himself and those around him from feeling the effects of the weather.

Because if there was one thing his solar mana was good for, it was for the creation of warmth and heat. So as the golems were starting to do most of the work, Griswold kept the people around him warm enough to continue their search, directing the people that were willing and able to stay within the radius of his solar rays. Digging a second man out of the snow, sending them towards the nearby house so they can warm up by the hearth and have some oversight. That way, if one of them did end up collapsing, there would be people around to take care of them should they need it. Standing up straight and using his Ki to see what his eyes could not, he managed to pinpoint a couple of locations where some of the civilians were buried. Being one of those developments that allowed him to still be useful in spite of not really having the magic to help out in this situation, it made things a fair bit easier.

“Franklin, have your golems dig over at those crossroads over there and check out that alley. There’s two people in the alley and five of them at the crossroads.”

Believing that both the apes and the birds would be able to help out to some degree if they dug with their hands and their talons, he did not really see the point in going out for a bird’s eye view. After all, the people were buried under piles of snow, which with the constant heavy snowfall made it hard to discern one place from the next. It was the kind of thing that made mudslides and avalanches so dangerous as there was no telling where the people in need of aid might be, no matter whether you looked at it from above or from ground level. So in his haste, he did not really respond to Franklin much as he really did not have the time and was struggling to organize this mess and get as many people out as he could, all while having to do so without having any access to his weapons. While this normally would not be much of an issue for him as he had his weaponry to fall back on, right now, all he was truly good for was figuring out where people were, keeping the helpers warm and not much else.

So as he kept digging for the third and final person that was buried in his current location, he got himself ready to move towards the next as soon as he was done. Because slacking and wasting time was really not an option right now, there was no time to think about his inadequacy at this point. It was something he would reflect on for a lengthy period once all of this was over, but for the time being, getting this last person out took priority over everything else. Because at the end of the day, whether these people were scumbag rogues, civilians, church-goers, elves, farmers or noble folk, this was all happening in the forsaken region. So until he dug them up and got to see what he was working with here, they were his people, making them his responsibility.

Frankie found that he was relieved to have run into Griswold for more than just the simple reason of his charismatic personality. Watching the man work as he unburied people reminded Frankie that he was physically just far more impressive then the hermit like mage. Frankly, he wasn't sure how he could have forgotten how the other man had dealt with the Alpha Warg during their first time working together. If anyone would be capable of easily digging people and pulling them out it would be someone who could go physically toe to toe with a large predator without magic. Then there was the benefit of his magic. Frankie had not known that his mana could produce heat in such a pleasant manner. Although the mad mage wasn't doing anything to put himself at risk of frostbite, certainly not by actually digging people out himself, he was still out in the cold while it snowed. Despite his best efforts to wear some layers it was undoubtedly a bit nippy out. Although he was sure Griswold's purpose with the magic was to warm those recently freed or those who were risking appendages digging through the snow Frankie could still take advantage of it. He did what he could to remain close by as the man moved around, ensuring he would always stay within the range of the soothing heat of the man's magic.

Although Griswold didn't exactly affirm Frankie's hypothesis outright he didn't deny it either and his directions on where to find other buried individuals provided additional evidence to back Frankie's theory. The mad mage had been hoping the other man would make his abilities clear so that Frankie could better understand the other individual and possibly study what that power might be. However, he supposed they were in a rather tight emergency and Griswold wouldn't exactly appreciate having Frankie play twenty one questions with him while he was busy tending to those they were freeing. He would just have to file all this for a later time. Perhaps after they rescued everyone he might be more open to the idea of discussing it all. Certainly, if it was something that Frankie could replicate and add to his own arsenal of tricks he would be very interested. If there was one weakness he had it was Sensory magic. He simply had zero talent for it and lacked even basic instinct where that was concerned. If there was something he could do to help compensate for that weakness he would certainly take it greedily.

"Understood, I'll send my golems to those areas to dig them out. Once they are free I'll have them escort them all back to you where they might be able to warm up. With luck we will be able to get to them before they suffer any of the ill effects of the cold." Just as he said he mentally made the command to each of his golems. Thankfully, with sheer numbers he had plenty to cover the amount that had been trapped. His five golems had moved to the crossroads where they began quick work digging out those that were trapped. There were some cries of alarm just as Frankie had expected, but after the initial shock wore off they seemed to get a grip on the situation and allowed the apes to get them out of whatever building or hovel they had found themselves buried under. The apes were half carrying, half leading, but they were making steady progress to get the group back to Frankie and Griswold. It helped that their massive heavy forms easily trudged through the snow. As they weren't bothered by the cold or slowed down by the height of the snow it meant they could more easily traverse the area where people might need to dig their way a path across.

Frankie's raptors meanwhile took off into the sky and merely flew to the alleyway in question. By flying they could avoid the entire mess all the snowfall provided and instead deftly land exactly where they were needed. Their digging process unfortunately though took longer than the apes. They had no hands or fingers with thumbs like the apes did. They were forced to use their beaks and do what they could to use their wings like makeshift plows, dragging them across the snow to push as much as they could away from a given area. Thankfully, they were constructed with Carbon Matter so they were heavy enough that their wings could be used for such a purpose. However, it didn't completely make up for the fact that their bodies weren't ideal for that situation. It was why he had sent all four to rescue just two people. If he had thought about it he might have mixed the groups and had two apes be simply carried in to the alley for use in digging, but it was too late now. Ultimately, it only cost them a few minutes. Eventually the people were freed. Getting them to mount the eagles had been harder than simply escorting with the apes. However, eventually they realized the futility of trying to forge their own path and allowed themselves to be carried by the eagles. After a few minutes all parties were safely gathered by Frankie and were now all huddled around Griswold for warmth.

"I think we have saved as many people as we can in this area. There might be more places likes this, but I believe this particular part of town got the worst of it. However, I'll follow your lead on this as you were here before me. We can press on or focus on the people here for now. I'm a little more concerned on what could have brought on such strange weather for the area. A little snow is normal and even the occasional blizzard might strike the city, but this frost seems way too resilient, even for this time of the year." Frankie didn't want to jump to any conclusions, but he really did find the whole thing quiet strange. For now though he would just continue to follow Griswold's lead. It had worked thus far for Frankie so there was no harm in continuing with the strategy. Nothing left to do, but see if the man had any other ideas or something else developed.

With the last of the people dragged out of the snow on his end, he could tell without looking that the golems were also hard at work in other parts of town, which was bearing fruit rapidly. Carrying people out left and right, it did not take long before the last of the people he could sense beneath the snow had been liberated and got escorted to the safety of a warm home. But as they went about it all, Griswold wondered why this was happening here of all places, and why the weather appeared to be so much worse than everywhere else in the country. And the fact that he had rode his horse through the common region after spending some time in Nairn and had also visited other portions of the forsaken realm on his way back, so he knew what he was talking about when he said the weather here was far, far worse than anywhere else.

While he could have gone with the same old story of claiming it was just the poor getting hit the hardest yet again, this time, he could not help but wonder as to whether or not there was more going on here that he could not yet see. Getting into an upright position after spending most of his time on all fours, dragging people out of piles of snow by their feet, the heat he radiated quickly removed any wet spots in his clothing. Keeping him from getting cold, by the times his pants were dried again, he released his mana and made his way over to Franklin. As he did, the guy brought about something he himself had been pondering on too, albeit in a more verbal manner as he had gotten accustomed to with him. Where Griswold was usually one for keeping most chatting to a minimum, Franklin was rather the opposite of that.

“I agree, what is happening here is far from normal, and nothing like the weather in the rest of the country. While it is cold and snowing everywhere, this weather we’re experiencing here is just leagues above the rest in severity, and it seems to be limited to a fairly specific area. So we may want to consider the fact that we’re dealing with a hostile mage, rather than a force of nature.”

Pondering on what the exact origin might be, blaming it on a mage that had beef with the entire town or just a select few was never all that hard, not when he knew what a mage of a decent level of experience could conjure up in little to no time at all. Where he had once been able to conjure up balls of fire the size of a melon, he could now toss building sized spheres of solar mana, likely being able to increase it to even larger sizes if he were to push himself. To that extent, he imagined covering a town like Aries Garse in a thick pile of snow was not outside of the realm of possibilities at all. No, this was absolutely something that would be worth looking into more. But since he was not directly able to pick up any mana or find anything with his Ki, that meant that whatever was causing this was outside of his range.

That said though, they couldn’t be too far away, or the strain of maintaining a spell of this magnitude would likely be impossible and break down over time. But seeing as how the heavy snowfall showed no signs of seizing, he had to believe that the cause was at the very least near the town. And since there were two of them now, with one of them having access to golems he could use to scour the place more swiftly, he believed it wise they split their efforts and get to searching for their culprit.

“Let’s have a look and see what pops up.”
