'CAUSE THERE'S MORE TO THIS BRAVE ADVENTURE
THAN YOU'D EVER BELIEVE
THAN YOU'D EVER BELIEVE
Drawing random numbers was a bitch. On the one hand, it made things more organized. But on the other, it was all too easy to psyche yourself out if you had to wait for too long. Luckily, there were very few people, so Xiulan had been given a fair amount of time to prepare herself without having too much time to get into her own head. Several people had gone, but now it was her own turn. As she walked into the stadium, she felt a number of eyes on her. But she was able to stay composed. This was what should have been expected. As she got to the center of the arena, she merely cleared her throat.
"My name is Xiulan Shengxiao." And just like that, the whispering started. It wasn't a surprise. After all, Chisana had just recently become a member of the Black Bulls. And that had been quite an interesting development. It wouldn't have surprised her if they were questioning why she was taking the exam when someone else in her family had been good enough to skip it. But she didn't allow them to cut her off.
"As you all know, my family has a reputation for our use of transformation magic. However, my specialties lie with Attacking and Healing. I can use transformation magic, but I prefer not to." She said as she pulled her grimoire from its holster, which really did look like it belonged on her hip. It had the same lacy black design as the trim of the crimson dress she was wearing. Of course, at the mention of healing, five magic knights had walked into the arena. Well, that certainly made things easier.
"Since I'm sure everyone is expecting it, I'll start with my transformation spell." She said as her grimoire began emanating a sea foam green aura, causing Xiulan to release it as she was also surrounded in a similar aura, the sound of flipping pages filling the now silent arena for a moment. "Ocean Magic: Body of The Water Ox." She said as an orb of saltwater formed above her grimoire. However..instead of shooting out towards any of her opponents, it shot directly into her. Almost immediately, her arms gained a fair amount of definition along with a shimmering veil of water.
"While this might not be what you expected, this spell is still useful. It increases my own power, and makes it harder for fire magic to damage me." She explained as she gestured towards the obvious fire mage, giving him a nod. At that, he pulled out his own grimoire, and sent a similarly low level spell at her. She allowed it to connect, wincing a bit as she felt the burn. However, she was obviously far less fazed by it than she should have been.
"Now that the elephant in the room has been removed, let's move on to my specialties. Starting with attacking." She said as her grimoire flipped pages again. "Currently, my attacks aim at targeting as many people as possible, allowing me to serve as support for any advancing or retreating comrades. However, while this spell is active, these spells are somewhat stronger."
She said as her grimoire flipped to its second page. "For example, Ocean Magic: Anger of Phorcys." As she said the words, five different spikes of coral formed in front of her. Each one was easily a foot long. And of course..were not water. As such, the whispering in the crowd started again, even as the spikes rapidly grew outward, stabbing into each of the five volunteers with such a rapid speed that it seemed as if the spikes had turned into beams. However, after making contact, each one rapidly retracted and dissipated. But she wasn't done. The pages of her book flipped again, opening to the first page of her grimoire.
"The same can be stated for my ability to heal. I am currently able to cast healing spells that both cover multiple large areas as well as target many individuals. And as you can see, my magic is split between two elements: Saltwater and Coral. Now then. Ocean Magic: Salacia's Touch." As she explained herself, a fairly large orb of water had formed. But upon stating the name of the spell she was casting, the orb fired off in five different directions, splashing over each magic knight, who quickly had their wounds that were created by Xiulan's first attack sealed up.
"Now, these spells might seem to be relatively biased. When I use water, it seems to only be supportive or healing in nature. However, that is a rather irresponsible mistake to make. Ocean Magic: Charybdis, and Ocean Magic: Haven of Salacia." As she said the first spell, each knight would find themselves standing in a small pool of water..which bubbled and roiled before erupting as a geyser, knocking each knight off of their feet..and into a second pool of water, this one being a slow moving whirlpool. As the knights stood up, it would once again be revealed that their wounds were healing. At this point, the murmuring had been nonstop, as the arena was now filled with an incredibly salty breeze. It really was almost like they were suddenly right by the ocean. Perhaps that was why this girl called her spells Ocean Magic.
"While my spells have a preference to the use of Coral in their attacks, I am more than capable of using Water to attack as well as heal. And that is really all I can show you. I appreciate this opportunity, and hope that you decide to grant me a place within one of your squads!" She said as she held her hand out just beneath her grimoire, which snapped shut and fell into her hand, which was placed back into its lacy, black leather holster on her hip. Afterwards, Xiulan made a point of curtsying to the captains before she spun on her heel and walked out. Well. That could have gone worse. But it also could have gone better. Really, there was no way to know if she was going to be placed anywhere or not..though really, she did wish they had sent out fewer knights. Her transformation spell gave her RESISTANCE to fire. Not immunity. She would have to treat this burn before they moved on.
