Athan sat at the wall right outside Hapshass where he had been put onto a mission and was given a partner who seemingly had yet to show up. When he was asked to partake in the mission the boy was rather displeased considering it was already weaker than the mission he had done before, where he had met that hulking lady Titania at. A very fitting name for the girl who could almost become double his height. But now Athan sat awaiting whoever his partner for this mission was. In all honesty the boy had no clue who it was only that he was not a knight but a civilian this time. It was odd to the boy that a civilian and a knight would both be partaking in the same mission, it seemed the two titles were just different. A civilian was supposed to be a member of the normal society who did side jobs here or there at most that rivaled a knight's job. But now they seemed to be getting put into the same line of work now even, oh well. At least he had not been asked to go sort the library, Athan didn't know if he could stomach something so boring.
This was all not to say that he hated the idea of working with a civilian, it wasn't as if he hated them or anything, but he was under the impression knights existed to protect them not work beside them. Though if the Golden Dawn thought that Athan taking this mission was important that farbeit for him to say no. He didn't mind waiting on the person that would accompany him, he more or less sat there playing with a stick and writing on the dirty, or occasionally tossing light’s back and forth between his hands to pass the time. He had grown to find amusement in jungling his magic, though of course it took no actual juggling skill.
Athan sighed as he leaned against the wall and looked into the sky, it was just midday and the weather was nice. The sky was clear and the wind rustled about through the boy's golden hair as well as his golden cloak signifying the squad he belonged to. He would have to make sure to clean it after sitting in the dirt, though for now he did not care. Instead he simply waited for now, watching the clouds pass by along with the time.
Another day another job. This is what Hans' life has become, a wave of endless work. He had nothing to complain about however since this is what he pretty much signed up for the moment he decided to walk down the path of a mercenary. He was going to get many different jobs thrown his way. Some that are meant to do good...or even misguided ones. The sword wielding mage was really only in for the yul, not caring much for the type of job, only if he's capable of doing it.
Hans found himself walking down a path to Hapshass, one of the towns located in the common region of the kingdom. Despite being from the Diamond Kingdom, Hans probably knew more about some of the towns here in Clover than back at his kingdom of origin. That was a good thing in a way. The less he thought about Diamond, the less he'd think about his old man. Right now, Hans was focused on the details of this job. He needed to scare off or take down a bear that has settled in a cave nearby the town. The man could see why this could be a potential danger so there wasn't really any questioning it. The job sounded pretty simple as well, something he could most definitely pull off on his own. But once again, he found himself being partnered with another not that he mind much. Just meant they could get the job done faster.
All Hans knew about his partner is that they are a Magic Knight. The only real contact Hans had with a Magic Knight was his guardian who died years ago during that five year war. He never saw that man as a knight, but more of an actual father. He was a kind man who had conviction. Even though he isn't walking down the same path, Hans has developed and learned much from that man, especially how to use a sword and better control his dark magic. 'You're special, kid.' was something the man told Hans when he was younger. To this day Hans still isn't sure if he meant that because of his grimoire which is apparently a big deal in this kingdom or because of something else. Still Hans held onto that, part of his motivation to keep pushing on through in this unforgiving world.
Approaching the walls, Hans noticed someone laying upon it. As he got closer, the man noticed that the blond appeared a bit younger than him. He'd then take quick notice of the magic knight mantle around him.
Golden Dawn...
He heard many things about that squad, that they are apparently at the top in comparison at the other squads and that they are very picky when choosing members. One would practically have to be a prodigy to join. This just made Hans even more curious about why he was needed for this job. Just as how he could pull this off on his own, any magic knight could've done the same, especially someone from that squad. Still, money was money so the man wasn't going to argue with any of this. "Hey." he'd say plainly to try and get the teen's attention. Before saying anything else, Hans paused for a second, taking notice of the kid's pointy ears. An elf, blessed with mana. This kid is special alright "Let's get this finished." Hans said, getting right to the point as he gestured his head in the direction of where the forest is.

Athan grew rather fond of sitting around and seemingly waiting for time to pass in his life. It wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be all the time and he didn't mind being left alone to his thoughts, though part of him wondered if it was part of his age showing due to the life experiences he had being so small, after all he had been reduced to solely training magic constantly he wasn't given a childhood. The other bonus to training however was that it really did teach one how to be lost in their thoughts, for when you do nothing but rinse and repeat a workout you grow to learn to occupy your mind. But he was happy when the man he assumed his partner to be showed up, he was ready to go kill a bear and get the mission finished. Athan was of course always wanting to test his strength as well as judge someone or something.
The first thing Athan quickly noticed was how drastically different the man was in compassion to him. Comparatively Athan was bright in every way, hair, eyes and even simple expression, his gold hair green eyes and smile adorning his face. Meanwhile everything about this guy was dark, his black hair, black eyes and dark clothing with a lack of emotion on his face or even in his voice. Athan jumped up from his sitting position shooting his hand out surprised to find the man only slightly taller than him, though clearly much more built. “Hello! I'm Athan, we can be on our way but why so serious? Can't live life so serious, have a smile and have fun. At least that's what I say and do.” The boy exclaimed as he began to walk towards the forest and in turn the cave.
As the two walked the boy of course never ceased his energetic nature. “So how's life as a civilian, I always wondered what it was like not being a noble. Not to offend you or anything I don't really care but I bet it's a lot different. And then why not be a knight, im not dumb, young yes but not dumb, I can tell you are strong enough to be a knight so why not?” the boy Athan asked probably extending his questioning further than the man would like but not really caring enough to stop even. “Ever since I became a knight my lifes gotten so much better. It's crazy, the pay is good and it's a lot better being free of my family. They are such a drag, though at the same time a lot of the Golden Dawn members are rather boring too, they say I am too childish. Well yeah they are not wrong, but how rude.” The boy said, finishing as he proceeded to make a ball of light in his right hand and toss it back and forth as the two made their way through the woods.
Out of all of his words the boy was most curious about why he wasn't a knight. The boy was not blind, anyone could tell the man meant business and wasn’t as weak as any normal civilian. He had some magic to him, and also simply held that sort of air around him. That he had been through some stuff, maybe even some sort of training similar to Athan. That or some other life defining time frame in his life. It wouldn’t be surprising to the boy if his assumption was right, after all almost anyone in this line of work had some sort of story. And as per usual Athan wanted to know his partner’s.
The moment the elf introduced himself, Hans had a feeling that this was going to be a long day. The way Athan started to ramble briefly caused the man to look off in the direction of the forest as if he were contemplating or wanted to say something, but decided not to and just started to walk with the teen close by. "Hans." was all the man would say for an introduction.
Hans looked around quietly as he walked, always observing his surroundings even in the most peaceful or areas. Even as the magic knight started up with his endless talking, Hans didn't make eye contact with him, but he was listening...mostly against his will. Hans has met talkers before, people who liked starting up conversations, but this boy was on a different level. It didn't really help that Hans is the type who prefers keeping to himself either. Still, he'd might as well say something in return, answer one of his questions. "I-" but of course he couldn't get a word out as the elf started his second barrage of words. This time, Hans was looking in the boy's direction with his expression changed to that of slight bewilderment.
Once Athan finally stopped talking, Hans quickly took notice of the "ball" he was juggling back and forth in his hands. It looked as though it was made of pure light. Was it a toy? Whatever that orb was it was giving off mana. It must've been the elf's magic, but Hans has never witnessed this element before. It sort of reminds him of his dark magic however which he has yet to come across another user of that element save for that Ravencrest noble he had to team up with to take down some bandits. It was an interesting experience, meeting another bearer of the clover of "good luck" and with the same type of magic no less. After a bit of reminiscing, Hans started to look forward again as he walked, deciding not to pry about the elf's magic. Whatever it was, he had a feeling he'd see it anyway once they confront the bear.
"You talk a lot." Hans simply said, breaking the briefly quiet atmosphere between the two. He wasn't the type to beat around the bush so whether this offended Athan or not in anyway, it would not have really mattered to the dark mage. Though, the teen's question about why Hans wasn't a magic knight wasn't new to him. "It's...not my style." the man answered, referring to the magic knight thing. There was more to it than just that however. His shitty childhood molded Hans into believing that he's only good for being a hired hand. Mercenary work was Hans had to turn to for survival after the deaths of his mother and guardian. He took advantage of this magic he was blessed with not to protect others, but to save himself. There is also his ties with the Diamond Kingdom, making Hans see himself as still a citizen of that kingdom despite how long he has been in Clover now.
After a bit of walking, the two, if Athan was still walking would finally make it to the entrance of the cave which was ominous and almost dark. Hans clenched his hand against the hilt of his sheathed blade located on the side of his waist. He was prepared to take this beast down.

Athan didn't mind when the man said he talked too much, he knew that and honestly had never been offended by it. Along with that it had also never really stopped the boy from talking, especially during these sort of walks. “Yeah, I have been told that before, doesn't bother me. I have the energy might as well put it somewhere. I don't even care if you really talk back or not, can just listen, or can act like it I guess. But in any case talking passes the time much quicker than almost any other activity one can do while simply walking to some stupid cave. So a bear today can actively say I have never had to kill a bear before. Never was something on my radar but I guess desperate times hunh. In any case I wonder if the bear is actually special at all or has any sort of magic or if its gonna be really big. Otherwise why would they need two of us.” Athan wondered as the two walked.
The two would come up on the cave entrance soon, it was dark inside, foliage swarming the outside entrance of the cave made it hard for almost any light to enter more than a few feet inside the cave. Of course the darkness rarely bothered the boy who quickly stopped throwing around his ball of light as he instead made it float 3 meters ahead of the two lighting up the distance between them enough at least to be able to see what they needed to in order not to trip. “Off we go.” Athan said as he began walking, the light moving forward at the same speed, Athan hoping his new partner was simply going to follow along.
If Hans would follow Athan they would wander around the cave for some time. The cave was rather dead considering what many caves were like. With things like spiders, mice, snakes and the likes often skittering about it seemed that it had been rather lifeless around here, maybe due to the beast that was hidden about. The dripping of the cave’s water from above provided some ambiance that only added to the slight creepy aura that was about it. After a good hour or so Athan heard a growl in the distance sounding much more like the snore of a sleeping bear than anything else, at least Athan assumed. “Well, I think we found our little beast” Athan said to Hans who he assumed was still following.
The boy quickly made his way forward picking up the pace slightly, until he heard a much louder snore this time. Athan stopped, sending forward his light until it shined upon a big creature. The bear was asleep. Was, as it stirred as the light shined on it and it woke up. “Welp, I don't know about you but I plan to kill it.” Athan said in no time opening his grimoire as the bear realized what was going on. Athan was quick though, a ball of light coming from his finger as his grimoire flipped to its second page. The ball shot out from his finger directly above the bear as a large ray of light shot down from the ball and encompassed the bear who became outlined in the light. At the same time Athan’s grimoire flipped back to its first page as three shards of light appeared above him, shooting off and into the bears body as it roared and reared up on its hind legs almost trying to intimidate the two.
Though now as the shards of light all struck into the bear one by one it stumbled back slightly before landing on its fours and charging forward.

The magic knight boy was at it running his mouth again. If it wasn't for Hans' strong tolerance to such things he'd probably tell the teen to shut his mouth. Though he'd very much prefer the sound of ambience over endless chit chat. A part of him was amused about how much Athan could talk in this short amount of time. He was certainly the opposite of the merc when it comes to that. Hans rarely speaks unless he feels its needed. He wasn't much of a talker and did not care if others found him uninteresting because of it. This is just how its been for him ever since he was born. Despite not looking like it, Hans was still listening to the teen. One thing good about being quiet is that Hans has excellent listening skills at least. If someone is in need of someone to lend an ear, Hans was the best choice....so long as you're not expecting anything to be said in return that is.
Hans looked into the entrance of the cave. Dark and mysterious, the pitch blackness of the cave reminded the merc of his own magic. There are usually stories of monsters that lurk within the dark. Being a wielder of such an element, would that too make Hans a monster? He has done some questionable things which comes with the territory of being a mercenary. Taking on any job for the right price, that is how Hans has been living for years now. He never questions the things he does, and just deals with them. Calling Hans a monster wouldn't exactly be a lie then.
The merc found himself looking at the teen's orb of light as they traversed through the cave. There was something special about that magic, but he couldn't exactly figure out why.
It was surprisingly quiet now save for the usual sounds heard in caves. The two were walking for so long now that Hans has lost track of time. The cave was really deep which didn't look that way from the outside. It felt almost endless until they made it to their destination which was indicated by the sound of snoring. As Athan's light flashed on the sleeping bear, Hans quickly had his hand on the hilt of his sheathed blade. The bear began to move about until its eyes opened. The merc looked at the elf as he took out his grimoire. This boy talked fast and had no problem getting to the point as well. The job never stated that the bear has to remain alive, so Hans was not against Athan wanting to kill it. It would be just the usual for the man....if he would even be able to do anything that is.
Before Hans could even unsheathe his katana or before the bear could really do anything, Athan was already attacking it with great speed! First a ray of light came pouring down on the beast which was followed up by spears constructed by that same light. Hans funny enough was at a lost for words. This kid was fast, really fast. But the bear still had some fight within him.
The beast appeared to be charging at Athan since he was the source of those attacks. With how fast he moved, Athan could probably get out of the way in time, but Hans didn't want to take any risks. The merc's four leaf grimoire floated to his side and opened up on a certain page with a dark aura forming around it ominously. He then raised his arm out with his palm facing Athan and as he did that, a glass like barrier of darkness appeared in front of the teen just in time for the bear to collide into it. The beast, getting a little dazed from the impact shook his head before trying to claw at the barrier. Not a single scratch mark was left. Hans used this moment to rush at the bear and slashed at its face with his sword! It left a nice mark on the side of its face, causing it to groan before now shifting its attention to the merc. A brownish aura then formed around the animal much to Hans' surprise. It was using physical reinforcement to boost its strength and speed. "Prepare yourself. This won't be easy." The merc braced himself, clenching his sword with both hands as his was now floating idly beside him. He may not have flashy moves like Athan, but Hans still has the darkness on his side.

“You worry too much, about this fight, thank you for the shield. For that maybe I will be a little more quiet on the way back. But for now, the bear dies.” Athan said to the man's remark. The man had managed to strike the beast with his sword after forming a barrier in front of the boy to block the bear's rush. The bear had begun to now shine a brownish aura though, using its own magic now as best he could. But even with the new magic aiding the bear in its speed and strength it was still far too slow in comparison to the boy's magic.
As his grimoire lit up again, being showered in the light that was the boy's magic, three shards of light one again appeared above the boy. As he flicked his finger forwards each shard shot into the bear, the bear within a few meters of the boy it had less than a second to respond before each of the shards sand into the bear's body. While a direct hit the bear managed to stay standing, even beginning to charge forward towards the boy. Rearing back with its claw as it reached him and swiped downwards. But Athan knew the bear would be unable to kill him with just a claw. In this moment Athan sent a ball of light above the two, the spell looking very similar to the first time he had struck the bear.
Athan’s new partner probably figured the boy was insane, but he was calculating, not insane. As the claw came down to strike the boy, his magic struck first. Hitting the bear, and killing it. The bear's attack died with it, the claw falling just before it reached the boy. The bear plopping down directly in front of the boy and making a very large thud as the lifeless body hit the cave floor. But sadly due to how close the boy had cut it with the bear, he was unable to ensure the spell only reached the bear. And just as the magic hit the bear, it struck the boy. As the light struck down hitting Athan he took it, much better than almost anyone his age ever would be able to. Standing there and simply waiting for it to end.
Just as the spell would end the boy would stand there quickly pointing to the ground, a light coming out from his hand before a circle emerged from the ground, lighting up the boy’s body and healing him for the same damage he took. Just as the scratched had appeared on his face, they disappeared and it seemed like nothing had ever happened.
“Well, it seems the bear was judged. It is time to return to town I guess. Tell them the good news and finish the mission. I see your magic now though, the opposite of mine. Anyone knows that lightness and darkness are simply opposing forces. But in magic it is even more so, darkness being slower but stronger, light simply relying on its speed to outpace. I'm sure you noticed those, but I think it is interesting if this was a simple coincidence that we met. We both have four leaf grimoires, and opposing magic and come from very different walks of life. We were made to be opposites. It's intriguing.” Athan said as he turned to leave the cave. He wondered what this man thought of this outcome. It was intriguing to Athan, he had heard of the element of darkness and had even read about it during his training but he had yet to ever see the magic with his own eyes or even know of anyone capable of using it. But now he had, and it was scary. For one, the man’s magic was supposed to be the winning side of the opposing forces. This meant that if it ever came down to it, one day Hans could be someone that would be able to take out Athan if he ever decided to do so. It was an interesting line of thinking, though he wondered if Hans was like that, evil, or ever would intend to do the boy harm. He doubted it.

Despite the cockiness of the boy, Hans had his eyes drawn on the bear that appeared to be powering up. He was not sure what this beast would be capable of now...and now he never will as the elf jumped into action.
Hans gasped lightly at Athan as he was once again attacking the bear with that speedy magic of his, proving further that he was more than just bark. First the bear was impaled by those spears of light which further injured it, but it still tried putting up a fight! The merc then took quick notice of that orb of light the teen sent into the air. If this was like any indication from before, the elf was going to do that ray of light type spell again, and not only were those two within range, but Hans was as well.
Being able to react fast enough, but only barely, Hans was able to shift his dark barrier in front of him with a gesture of his hand. Hans was able to shield himself from that ray of light which surprisingly barely left a scratch on the barrier. Hans already knew that his barrier was durable, but with how strong that light came off as, he was expecting it to do a bit more noticeable damage to it. It didn't matter anyway, only that he was able to avoid taking a direct hit from that spell because there was no way he'd be able to just jump out of the way with how close he was.
Speaking of...
It appears that the boy himself wasn't able to get out of his own spell's range in time and took the hit. "Hey, are you...!?" Before Hans could finish, he watched as another form of light shined on the teen, healing whatever wounds he had. This kid was something else. Is this truly the power of an elf, a knight from Golden Dawn?
Athan started up again with his talking, but this time it was obvious that Hans was paying attention. So he possessed one as well, a four leaf grimoire. He was blessed with mana, but with the strength he displayed, Hans felt as though this kid had an even stronger blessing. Was it because of the magic he wields, or because of his elven heritage? Hans wasn't even able to show what he was capable of with how fast this was resolved. "Light Magic..." Hans mumbled to himself. The polar opposite of his own magic. Fate is something Hans has a hard time believing in, but this kid's identity was the complete opposite of Hans. A bizarre coincidence...if it is just that.
Once his partner was finished talking, Hans looked back at the lifeless bear, scoffing a bit at the idea of how unneeded he really was to complete this job, but it didn't matter. The mission is done, and there was nothing else to do. "You're something else, kid....Just make sure you stay clear from your own spells next time." Hans said, his closest to making a joke in a long time. "Let's report back." Hans added before heading in the direction out of the cave. This was an experience the merc was never going to forget.
