A cold wind cut through the pouring rain and the rumble of thunder while it further chilled an already miserable looking Kreig, causing Henri to thoroughly enjoy this assignment. Kreig was not often rattled but the boy hated the cold and despised the rain. Watching him wipe his face clean only deepened the already growing grin of the messy haired mage. Henri nudging his fellow mage did nothing to improve that move as the pair stood and watched the archaeologists efforts down in the quickly muddying pit below. Despite Kreig’s bad mood and the weather, Henri himself was quite enjoying the outing with his friend and this historic expedition.

For the last few weeks the team assigned to the site had been digging into the mountainside and extracting an ancient cavern from long forgotten mages that had been built into the sides of the terrain that made up Diamond Kingdom Outskirts. They had found several artifacts and as such had requested a few runners to continually transport the artifacts back to their headquarters to be cleaned and readied for study or display. It was amazing to think that they were uncovering history from several hundreds of years ago when the art of mana was not collected by kingdoms but by humble individuals usually not more than seven or eight people. In those days mages hired themselves out to serve the people one mission at a time, often killing out other mages to assume control of their contracts. It was a brutal time but a historic time and anything they could pull out of the old homes would be considered quite ancient and worth keeping as an artifact.

Another crack of thunder shook the stones beneath their feet from the sheer volume of the burst and Kreig mumbled something under his breath. Henri once again cast a sideways glance towards his former fellow rival. Kreig was dressed in a sleeveless leather vest and jeans with his goggles over his eyes. The boy had always kept his hair pretty short and his boots of the biker variety. Even today, with his jeans soaked from a worn light blue into a dark blue, he kept to his normal attire and his usual attitude of ‘Goddamnit, why am I here…’. It was not that Kreig was arrogant but exceedingly lazy and picky about what interested him. Henri was awful positive that playing courier for the braniacs of the kingdom was not what Kreig wanted to do on his weekend.

Don’t look so sad buddy, we’ll drop off a couple artifacts and be done with it. Be patient. Henri stated softly, trying to console his friend and improve his mood slightly. It was a long shot, but worth the attempt.

I don’t see why it takes both of us to take anything the dweebs dig out of the mountainside down to some people to scrub and display it. It's all kind of pointless to me. Kreig replied, folding his arms across his chest in a defiant pose. The messy haired mage could only shake his head with a smirk as their attention turned towards the people wielding pick axes and brushes who were trying to excavate their site.

Luckily the pair did not have to wait long for the ruckus to begin. First there were shouts and then a rush of people, the mage left on the outside while the archaeologists got first peek at whatever was uncovered. Two rather skinny fellows were having some trouble lugging the object outside of the ruined home they had been clearing out and finally gave the waiting pair a view. An old chest looking rather worn out and beat up. Slowly hammers and chisels clanged as careful students of history tried to force the eroded lock open. Despite Kreig’s disinterest from earlier the mystery now had him enraptured and both he and Henri leaned forward to perhaps get a better view as the lock shattered with a loud thunk.

Astounding, it is hard to believe these items are so well preserved. Kreig have you seen seen such a beautiful thing?

Though the bodies surrounding the chest blocked a clear view of the items, the glint of something silvery caught Henri’s eye. He nudged Kreig again and his smile deepened considerably. Whatever they had uncovered was shining somewhere beneath all of the patina that surely covered it. Finally he and Kreig could do what they had been assigned to do rather than stand around and watch others do theirs.

Let’s see who can get there first. whispered a familiar voice in his ear. They had not even laid hands on what the researchers had pulled from the ancient dwelling and Kreig was challenging him to a race of care and skill. Neither of them could show up with a destroyed artifact but to move too slowly would leave the other to win the challenge.

Why don’t we wait to see what it is the archaeologists have uncovered before making challenges. Don’t you think that would be wise old friend?

I ain’t old and I don’t need to see what they’ve uncovered to know that no matter what it is that I can still beat you back to their lab. I’d bet dinner next family get together over it.

Family dinners tended to be expensive affairs, even though none of those who attended were truly family. The short story was they were a group of academy students too reluctant to let their former classmates leave their lives forever. Kreig was part of the group that had pushed each other through graduation as a family unit, as was Henri, and to offer covering such a large meal would be appreciated by the group regardless of who won the race.

Fine, you’re on. First one back to the lab pays for the family dinner. Henri said with decisiveness. A handshake sealed the deal before the pair walked over towards the people gathered around the ancient chest. Amid the murmurs and the mutters, Henri carefully shoved his way through the people and laid his eyes upon a beautiful sight down in the chest. An ancient katana, unsheathed, and a golden looking plate rested in the bottom of the chest and seemed far more ceremonial than utilitarian. They were ornate and gorgeous despite the age that marred their details and threatened to consume them entirely if left to nature and time. The rain surely would not help their condition, meaning that the boys’ contest suddenly had a purpose beyond simple contest.

One of the archaeologists picked up the plate and handed it to the goggled Kreig and in a flash the boy was sprinting through the slick mud. His speed was matched with an equal amount of care as he made his way back towards the kingdom and left Henri waiting for the katana to be handed to him. Finally he felt the solid weight of a sword in his hand and his own feet took off down the path. Thunder clapped overhead as the pair took very different paths towards the laboratory where the items would be cleaned and readied for display.

The path was a slurry of water and dirt that went beyond mud and almost became a sluice of slime. With footing hard enough to maintain in the rain, Henri quickly realized that his strategy would have to change before he slipped and possibly damaged the package he was charged with taking. That simply could not happen and would be an unforgivable failure in his responsibilities. Reaching the first outskirts of the kingdom allowed the messy haired mage to remove himself from the muck and find firmer footing on the tiled rooftop of a home. Henri ignored the fact that his heavy footsteps were probably disturbing the family trapped beneath the roof in the rainstorm as he reached the end of the tiles and was forced to leap onto the next one.

Henri knew the path back to the lab by heart, having traveled it earlier in the day with the group now excavating the long forgotten clan headquarters. Kreig still had a good head start on the race and all Henri could do now is hope to reach it faster than his old compatriot. With a final leap landing him on the doorstep of his destination, the Clover Kingdom mage took a moment to look around for his friend while his hand drifted casually towards the door handle.

Come on in Henri, I wanna tell you all about what I plan to eat for dinner at our next get together…

Shaking his head, Henri entered the building. He had accomplished his mission, even if Kreig had accomplished it faster. At the end of the day though nothing was broken or damaged and the pair had fulfilled their assigned duties and helped those who required it. As Kreig readied himself to explain his probably extravagant meal plan, the messy haired mage passed the katana to a researcher and prepared to listen.
