Verena might not have been a magic knight, but how could she possibly pass up this chance? Ilhiana Vones? Ancient ruins? The woman didn't just want muscle power. She was looking for academics as well as Knights. Verena had grown quite a bit as a mage, but she wasn't so foolish as to try to pass herself off as part of Clover's militia.[break][break]
...At least, that's what she thought, but there was no way she could pass up this opportunity! She only hoped that the archeologist would understand. It was for that reason that Verena now stood inside the Grand Magic Archives. She was fully aware of what the topic of the dig was in advance, having looked into it from the moment she was aware that Ilhiana Vones was looking for volunteers.[break][break]
It was clear that she wasn't the only one though; far more people than what was considered normal were here. It was doubtful that this was because of some sort of 'bookworm bug', however. A dig with Ilhiana did not just offer one an experience to learn, but a chance to make history. Admittedly, Verena only cared for the former. She did not care so much if she made history, though she did want history to remember her family at large.[break][break]
Of course, the Grand Archives might have been filled to the brim with mages of all kind, but many of them who were here reading up most likely did not know what exactly to be looking for. Amongst the pile of books that Verena had brought beside her included Carl Hamlen's 'Encyclopedia of Venomous and Non-Venomous Snakes', Richard Thranceed's 'Deep Jungle Survival Guide', Emily Lonamill's 'Jungle Botany: Herbs, Edibles, and Poisons', and a few other books that went over commonly used strategies when exploring ruins and temples.[break][break]
Admittedly, there were a few more that the brunette wanted to read, but they were all in use. Quite literally all things related to Ilhiana were in use in some way or another, which just went to show how fierce things were right now.[break][break]
There was no table space available less Verena would have been willing to sit in close proximity to dozens of others, and though a library offered quiet, she did not feel comfortable spending that much time near that many people for long periods of time. She had found a comfortable spot near the window on the second level to read.[break][break]
Since her meeting with Renfir, Verena had begun wearing her coat less and less. Instead, it was stuffed in her backpack, something she regularly carried and brought with her as a result of her own traveling nature. Her hair was braided and instead of tying it into twin tails, she instead just had one long ponytail that went down to her waist.[break][break]
The woman was bundled up with her dark blue full jumpsuit that she wore under a black dress with red stitching across the edges. The dress itself was quite an expensive-looking one due to the fabric used. It looked quite exotic, though it was clearly Clover made. Admittedly, this attire did nothing to hide her figure or assets, but due to her posture and a book in her face right now, it wasn't at all noticeable regardless.

[attr=class, cyrustext]Cyrus smiled peacefully as he walked through the streets of the Royal Capital, his pace leisurely but showing a certain level of eagerness. It was quite the fine day outside, and one that he would gladly spend enjoying the weather were it not for the fact that he had more pressing matters to attend to at the moment.
Ilhiana Vones, a famous archaeological researcher of Clover, had recently been granted permission by the Wizard King himself to commence with the investigation of a deep jungle in search of an ancient temple she had reasons to believe lay hidden within. The search was one that would certainly make for quite the headline, should it succeed, and she wasn't going to be investigating on her own. The researcher had let it be known that she was accepting the assistance of those with sufficient knowledge and competency, so long as they were able to suitably impress her with their qualifications before she left on her journey.
This brought Cyrus to the Grand Magic Archives here in the capitol, where he would be doing a bit of reading in order to prepare himself for the upcoming excursion. As Vice Captain of the Golden Dawn, few could be expected to doubt the sap wizard's credentials in terms of combat prowess. But given his respect for the head of this investigation's work, he also wanted to make a good impression with his intellect as well.
As Cyrus opened the doors to the archives, several people noticed him and set to murmuring in surprise. He gave a quiet, somewhat uneasy chuckle; though he had been Vice Captain for a fair while now, he still wasn't used to so many people being able to recognize him on sight. For most of his life he tended to fly under the radar, so to speak, and the attention was something he would need a while longer to acclimate to.
Still, he wouldn't let that distract him from his goal for the day; a goal that many people seemed to share, given that the archives seemed significantly more crowded than usual. Fortunately for Cyrus, though, he knew precisely what books he was looking for and where he should be able to find them.
That being the case he immediately was on the hunt for the books in question, scouring the shelves for the spines that held the knowledge he sought. First was "The Antidote of Life", a book by an obscure researcher who studied the medicinal uses of snake venom, among other subjects. Then came "Serpents in Culture", a compendium of sorts looking at various societies' views, beliefs, superstitions, and even reverence for snakes and their relatives. The third of his most significant targets took a bit to find, but find it he did; "The Eye of the Snake", which was a book written by one Alastor Gremory on his findings and research into the hunting and feeding behavior of many different species of snakes.
Once he had his intended books collected, along with several others to round out his reading, he set to looking for a quiet place to read. He decided that the second floor would probably be his best bet, as it was far away from the books he and most others looking to join Ilhiana's expedition were located.
Once he arrived at the second floor, however, a familiar sight met his gaze; a young, bookish woman tucked away in the corner, her face buried in a book not unlike those he had collected. A smile grew on the young man's face, and he approached the woman. "Would it be presumptuous of me to ask if you would mind my company a second time?" He asked, motioning to the chair a few feet away from Verena.

Quiet footsteps caused Verena to look up from her spot on the ground in the corner. Of course, she heard the murmurs and whispers amongst as Cyrus ascended to the second level. But she was far enough back that she couldn't really hear anything anyone was saying. From what she could gather, someone famous must have shown up. That would make this a bit more difficult. It was only natural that Ilhiana would have wanted someone of reputable strength--and more importantly, wisdom on her team. Depending on who it was, it was practically a guarantee that they would make the team which would leave one less applicable spot.[break][break]
However, when she saw it was Cyrus, she was relieved. Not because the male wasn't powerful. Not because he was intelligent. If anything, he personified both of these traits more than most in the kingdom. And that was why she felt at ease. If she was to lose out on a position to anyone, she would prefer to lose it to him. She knew that he wasn't going to seek out fame or fortune. It was just the scholarly thrill that he was likely after. And that was a far more respectable trait than what she attributed to some of the more powerful mages within the Kingdom at large.[break][break]
Offering a sweet smile to the Vice-Captain as she swept some hair back, she was glad to see the blonde. "Of course not," she said in a hushed tone; this was still a place of education, so she maintained her usual quiet tone. Yet there didn't seem to be any hesitation from when they had last met.[break][break]
"Congratulations on your Vice-Captain status." the brunette added. "...Oh right. I'd like to apologize for my behavior in our first encounter... I've been meaning to apologize for that for a while, but I've been so busy in the recent months and sending it via a mere letter felt a little... hollow."[break][break]
Verena hadn't forgotten about their first encounter. She was rude. She was wrong. She was grateful that Cyrus had just gone along with it, even going so far as to humble himself to her so that she might feel at least some comfort. But she was the one who was out of line. She was inconsiderate, naive, and ignorant. All things that she disliked in other people, yet she felt she personified those traits when looking back on their encounter.[break][break]
But more than that, there was a feeling she felt more than guilt. Gratitude. Because it was his words that had assisted her in getting through Kikka. To Verena, her survival was only possible precisely because of what Cyrus had told her. But she wasn't quite sure how to really express that gratitude. She wanted to, but... what was the best way to do it...[break][break]
She let out a defeated sigh. She could admit when she was wrong with ease, but when it came to thanking someone for something, it was a bit more difficult. Perhaps because it came with a sense of feeling indebted. How ridiculous. Sometimes, she hated that noble blood that ran through her veins. Instead, Verena eyed the books Cyrus had managed to find.[break][break]
"...Would it be presumptuous of me to inquire if you'd like to exchange books when we finish reading them?" Verena inquired.[break][break]
The first time they had met, it was Cyrus asking for a book she had. This time, however, it seemed as though the shoe was on the other foot. "The Eye of the Snake" would no doubt be an exceptionally useful read in the coming trial.

[attr=class, cyrustext]When the brunette bookworm lifted her eyes from the book in her hands to meet his gaze, Cyrus smiled and gave her a small wave of greeting. His expression was returned, much to his pleasure, and he nodded as he took the seat beside his fellow seeker of knowledge. Hama emerged from his grimoire and sat on the edge of the table between them. "Hey golem nerd! Long time no see Verena!" She greeted the larger woman in a friendly manner, laying back on the table and stretching her legs.
"Thank you. I take it, judging by your collection here, that you're also studying up in hopes of joining Ilhiana Vones' expedition? It would be nice to have someone I'm acquainted with present, should I earn a position for myself." Cyrus said in response to Verena's permission to sit with her, opening the first of his stack of books, "Serpents in Culture". Notably, Verena may have noticed that he seemed quite certain that she would land a position on the expedition. Given his recent missions and training, the sap wizard was unsure if he could properly apply himself well enough in time to do the same.
Verena congratulated her friend for his promotion to Vice Captain, and he recalled with a wide smile how he had mentioned to her the last time they met how his position as the Golden Dawn's second in-command was unofficial back then. "Thank you! It has been a challenge, helping to lead the Dawn, but a rewarding one!"
It was then that the girl apologized for her behavior during their first meeting, admitting that she hadn't liked the idea of doing so through a letter but being too busy to do so in person. He shook his head; even back then, there had been no hard feelings on his part. What she had said did have a lot of truth to it, after all. Briefly his thoughts went to a report he had read; Verena had been there at Kikka, during the recent... incident. It was a subject he'd like to ask her about, but given what he had heard of the day he didn't want to ruin the mood of their current conversation. Perhaps later, during the expedition itself he could ask?
Seeming at a loss for something else to say, Verena asked him if he'd be willing to let her borrow one of his own books when he was done with it. He chuckled. "But of course! And I hope you wouldn't mind me looking at that book of herbal remedies and such once you've finished with it as well?"
Hama simply rolled her eyes at the exchange. More books. She was just eager to get to the actual expedition part already.

Verena offered a smile to the spirit. It was nice to see her again as well. Cyrus was a lot like Verena in some ways (there were, of course, obvious differences, but the brunette mostly thought of their similarities in their mannerisms based on what she had seen from him thus far). However, that didn't mean she didn't appreciate the spunky energy that Hama offered. It certainly made things livelier. "It's a pleasure to see you again, Hama. Though... I'd personally refer to myself as an enthusiast rather than a nerd..." Verena retorted, placing a finger to her chin as if trying to determine if that was a proper evaluation of herself.[break][break]
Cyrus's evaluation of her purpose here was spot on. "Mhm. I trust the same is true for you? I doubt you'll have much to worry about entry with all you have to your name. It's me who has to work that much harder. After all, I'm not even a Magic Knight. It might be harder for me to stand out..."[break][break]
Verena let out a soft sigh. Cyrus seemed to be quite certain that she would pass, but Verena wasn't as sure. She wasn't as experienced in combat as some of these Magic Knights present in this library. All she really had going for her was rare magic as well as the fact that she was skilled with golemancy, but she was nowhere near as strong as Cyrus. She only hoped that she could earn favor.[break][break]
Cyrus took in Verena's congratulations with stride. Accepting it, but not letting it get to his head only reaffirming what Verena thought of him. Indeed, he was the ideal Magic Knight. She had that same opinion of Chisana. Confident, but also modest. Strong both in magic and mind, but directed that strength for the sake of others instead of purely for themselves. It was to imagine a scenario where Cyrus wasn't chosen by a spirit, as well as something great for Chisana.[break][break]
Verena had only brought up Kikka with the intent to offer gratitude, so she was grateful that the Vice-Captain had not actually asked further questions on it. The truth was she had very complicated feelings about it, but she would not deny that it had left a permanent mark on her psyche. For better or for worse, she did not really know. But she would not let it hold her back -- she had learned much about herself in the process, and what it was she wanted to do.
"Of course not. Knowledge is an equal opportunity. Besides... I would feel things would be much safer for everyone if we were all thoroughly prepared."
