Through it all, the fact that they were going to find something elven was not even a little bit outside of the realm of possibilities, though the reason why he had taken them out to this particular portion of the foothills was for a rather specific reason. That reason being that he did not want to disturb the dead a second time, as him having to deal with elven wraiths was one of the hardest things he had been tasked with to date. Not just because they were difficult to deal with, but because they did not need to be woken from beyond the grave to be bothered by a bunch of humans that just aimed to steal their stuff. And even those with the best intentions, people who “took” things from graves in an attempt to learn from it were really doing nothing more than stealing from the dead and risked triggering a curse in doing so.
As it was really not the kind of thing he wanted to deal with a second time, especially not this soon after his last encounter with it, Griswold truly hoped that the area he had brought them to was not home to more crypts but rather to a living area. Even if it wasn’t, it would still be better than stumbling upon more burial sites in his own opinion. So when the redhead used a spell that allowed him to create some kind of layout of the place with his magic, that was when shit began hitting the fan. Bringing up the writing he had uncovered before inquiring if any of them actually spoke elfish, Griswold knew that this was his time to shine. Taking a moment to go over the words, regardless of how rusty it was because of how rarely he had to actually use it these days, or rather, how rarely he used it in the past four years, even he could tell that this phrase was not meant in the way the redhead figured it might be intended.
“This is not a phrase that’ll allow admittance into the place, nor is it an invitation. It’s far from it actually, as it states this way has been shut and has to remain shut. “Na gabh a-steach, tha olc a ’laighe an seo”. Do not enter, for evil rests here. Seems like a clear enough notion as to what it means, and for what it is worth, I feel like we should respect it.”
Speaking the sentence out loud as it were and providing the explanation to those that did not speak the language, Griswold was starting to believe that he had taken them to a place that was arguably worse than stumbling into another crypt. If there was truly something evil that had to be locked away instead of it being killed, that meant that unleashing it upon the world would be just about the worst thing they could do. So even if at least one of the people here wanted to get more information regarding demons, which might or might not be related to whatever “evil” might be beneath them, Griswold personally did not want to take the risk of freeing something that had been locked away for whoever knows how long. If it was something that was alive, the chances of it being long dead were quite high, though again, Griswold did not want to take risks based on assumptions.
“I guess this is where our little excursion ends. If there is really something evil down there, I’d rather not let it out or let you in, get killed before it escapes into the world to kill even more. While I could potentially stop you from entering for as long as I’m around, I’d like to call upon your sense of duty to this country as magic knights, keep whatever this is locked away and not speak of it to anyone.”
Knowing quite well that this was the kind of thing that gave birth to rumors, myths and legends, he did not want people to hear about the place and the “evil” that was dwelling down inside of it, only for them to come down here in order to learn more about it and inadvertently release what Griswold would have preferred to keep locked away. Because of who they were and the oaths they had sworn to the country, the elven mage believed the two would be smart enough not to run their mouths and let other people in on this little secret they had uncovered. That said, he had learned to more or less count on the stupidity of humanity as a whole, which made it hard to fully invest himself in the idea that none of them were going to be saying a word about it. And seeing as he was only in Kiten for the time being, he would eventually be heading back to the forsaken realm, at which point he would not be able to frequently check up on this place.
“It won’t be long before I depart for the forsaken realm again, probably within the week, meaning there won’t be anyone watching over this place. Meaning if someone finds out and goes down there, it is likely lives will be lost before whatever comes out will be locked back up or killed properly. If this comes to pass because one of you talked about it, trust that I will find you and hold you accountable.”
And with that, Griswold simply nodded at the two before departing and heading back towards the tavern in Kiten. With a bit of luck, there would have been some changes to the situation of the people resting upstairs, which would only hasten his eventual departure from the common realm. As much as he liked spending time in the common realm due to the added bits of luxury the forsaken realm simply lacked, the fact that people were counting on him to at least help keep the place safe meant that he could not just stay here. So as soon as the family he had saved from the crypt was nursed back to health and sent on their way back home, he too could head back to his “home”. Hopefully, he could do so without one of the two magic knights unleashing whatever evil was contained here. He could only hope.
