Artemis had been back for only a few days, and she’s seen quite a few new faces already. It seems that the Green Mantises have burgeoned in numbers in the past few weeks since she had gone under the radar. Taking long term missions definitely have taken a toll with her relationships with her squad mates. Unlike before, when she knew every single face that came in and out of their squad base, recently, it seems that Artemis was the new member instead. Sure, she still found herself conversing with the old members, those who had been around for a long time, and those who had joined just before she had left for her long term mission. Catching up with them had been a blast, and truly, she treasured those moments. The moments where you realized that the people you had made connections were still alive, still breathing, and had not relapsed into their old ways of criminality. Too many of the Green Mantis squad members had a past, and more than a handful had relapsed. Artemis was always hit hard whenever she heard a friend, or even an acquaintance, had relapsed and went back to their old ways. It was a blow, not just to the squad, but also to their memberbase as a whole. It was always a sad day when it happens.[break][break]
Picking herself up from the training grounds, Artemis slowly went towards the small inn that served food in Hage. The place was a little rundown, and possibly broke any safety code that the Clover Kingdom had for its establishments, but it was the only place that served good food, and fantastic drinks. Artemis was never one to drink spirits, understanding that it can easily be the downfall of a person, so she stuck to water. However, the inn itself made the best beef stew that money can buy, and Artemis was sure that the cook of the inn, Madame Cherie, was one hundred percent a four-leaf grimoire holder with Food as her element. She just had to be that legendary for her cooking to be so divine. Artemis’ taste buds would never be corrupted by any other chefs save Madame Cherie, and she knew it. The day that Madame Cherie passes is the day that the world will stop spinning for a day. [break][break]
Walking towards the door, Artemis opened it slowly revealing an empty restaurant. Well, empty save Madame Cherie, who was cleaning the booths. She waved at Artemis, and told her to sit at her usual spot, a corner table with three chairs. Artemis obliged, smiling at the old woman. Madame Cherie was a short lady, though very boisterous, and on the old side of age. Artemis was sure that the woman was more than a hundred years old, with her hair so white it almost matched that of a Silva woman’s. Madame Cherie took Artemis’ order, the usual beef stew with a side of rice, before heading back to the kitchen to make it for her. [break][break]
It was mid-afternoon, and the place was usually very slow at this time. Perfect for Artemis who liked being alone, at least, left to her own thoughts. [break][break]
Artemis, however, felt another person coming into the restaurant. The person had a mana signature large enough to be a Magic Knight, and using her sensory, Artemis was mostly sure it was a Magic Knight. Turning towards the door, the woman waited. If it was a Green Mantis, then she would definitely wave them over. She could use the company of a squad member, even better if it was a person she had never met. It’s time for her to catch up with old friends, and meet new acquaintances, after all. [break][break]

Valo has officially joined the Magic Knight squad Green Mantis for a total of one week, coming up on two. And he had to admit he was quite disappointed, but perhaps disappointed was to hard more like...bored. Because he was a brand new member he found it difficult to find a proper job without some of the more experienced members finding them first. It was more of frustration than an actual full blown concern, this only meant he had try a little harder and wake up a little earlier.
Val is eager to prove himself and prove himself fast. He wasn't a fan of being looked down upon for to long, he knew coming here it was going to happen but he wanted to squash any concerns that he wasn't fit real quick. "...Aaahhh it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks." He said to himself while on his typical afternoon run. He looked to run after his morning fit sessions to keep himself up and ready for any type of action, and since he couldn't find a decent job yet staying physically active was pretty important to him. His usual routine for the passing days have been start with a light breakfast at the base, go on to the training ground and practice some martial arts finish off with a nice afternoon run on the way to the Small inn in Hoge for some real food. He has grown quite fond of Madame Cherie and the inn, mostly because it was quite around this time and she was always nice and welcoming. Plus he could tell Madam Cherie didn't judge, most people scoff at his appearance of that being a typical looking thug but she welcomed him and Valo appreciated that. He appreciated the quite spot the inn provided it gave it time to think, and get away from all this magic knight business he got himself wrapped into now. When eating here in he often thought what the old gang was doing back home, he would hope staying out of trouble.
He slowed down his run, to a slow jog and opened the door to the inn. Greeting Madam Cherie with his typical grin "Madam Cherie a pleasure as always." he said while stretching his arms out. "Hello V-Valo was it? Will it be the chicken and rice again?" she asked him.
"Yup!"
Valo turned to walk in and noticed a fellow Green Mantis member one that he hasn't seen before, granted he didn't know every single member by face and name. But with a longer glance he would be able to put a name to the person. That might be Artemis Somerset a well known to put it lightly Green Mantis member. She noticed that he was part of Green Mantis as well and proceeded to wave him over.
This would be a good time to get to know someone from the squad, especially with her kind of experience.
Through the squad talk and chatter he heard of a very high ranking member named Artemis Somerset who went on jobs that would span weeks and longer sometimes. To think he would meet her in a place like this was quite funny. He started to make his way over to her getting a good feel of her vibe and presence, she was definitely strong. Valo was still getting used to how the placements and ranking worked, but he knew that she would be up there in terms of power and experience. Her face
"You must be...Artemis? Am I right?" he would wait for a response before introducing himself. "Im Valor-ehh just Valo." he would leave it at Valo, since he hated his full name being used.
It seems that the young man knew Madame Cherie. Well, most if not all of the Green Mantis squad members should know of Madame Cherie, if not outright be friendly with her. The old woman served everyone equally, from the nobility, to the farmers whose hands and knees were usually covered with dirt. Life, here in the Forsaken Region, was not hospitable for the weak at heart, mind, and body. Madame Cherie, however, was the light during the darkest of times. The inn she ran also became a refuge as well, and truly, it was a refuge without judgement. The Green Mantis members were never judged, ridiculed, or even insulted here. In fact, Madame Cherie kicked out people who became too rowdy against the Green Mantis squad members who visited regularly. Secretly, Artemis kind of thought that the woman was once a Green Mantis member, though she could never be certain. All she knew was that the woman was very powerful in her own right, and nobody dared mess with her.[break][break]
The young man ordered, and then found himself coming towards her. Of course, she had waved, but he could have easily ignored her. However, it would have been awkward if he did, Artemis surmised. Better to have the company of a fellow Green Mantis, after all.[break][break]
“You know my name.” Artemis eyed the young man, who introduced himself as Valo. “I’m guessing you have met people who I might have been acquainted with, then?”[break][break]
She gave it a pregnant pause, before continuing, “Well, what did you hear about me?” Artemis asked, interested at what the others have been spreading about her. “I’m interested in what the others think of me, after all.” It was true. While she had been gone, a lot of things had happened. Shifts in the world, and within the Green Mantis as a whole. Artemis was curious as to what the general population thought of her as a mage, and as one who was not present during all of these shifts. Artemis supposed that nobody would say anything bad, at least, not to her face. They at least knew what might happen if she had gotten wind of that. [break][break]
“Though, I am at a disadvantage here, aren’t I?” Artemis took a sip of her water, “It seems you know some things about me, yet I do not know anything about you, Valo.” The young man was definitely a new mage. She had never heard his name before she had left, so possibly a new recruit. It seems that the Captain had been able to find more people to join. Troublemakers, delinquents, and even criminals, that was what made up Green Mantis. She did not judge, however. Talent came from a myriad of places, and even criminals can redeem themselves through service, especially those with a talent. [break][break]
“I don’t judge, mind you. So you don’t need to hold anything back. Life might have given us different circumstances, however, you’re part of the Green Mantises now. You left everything you were behind when you accepted that Green Mantle. The only thing that you need to keep in mind is your future.” She concluded. Artemis encouraged the young man, though he might not have needed it. As a noblewoman, she knew how judgemental people were of their squad, and it sometimes hurt the member’s self-esteem. Artemis would have none of that. “So, I’m all ears, Valo.” [break][break] At this point, their food arrived. Artemis herself had closed her eyes in anticipation, having smelled the beef stew that was so divine, it made the gods weep. She, however, did not dig in. The food was too hot, and she knew Madame Cherie was not one to reheat food. No, she made everything fresh, which meant that the food was a hundred times better. No, Artemis would hear the man out first, before she dug in.

“You know my name.” Artemis eyed the young man, who introduced himself as Valo. “I’m guessing you have met people who I might have been acquainted with, then?”
"Yeah I have heard about you a few number of times actually." Valo answered while crossing his arms, really thinking hard about it. "A number of the members speak as if they know you personally, I thought it was kind weird but I figured thats just how things are here with title's and fame and all that."
Valo noticed that he's not used the systems and how things worked in the Magic Knights yet. This only bothered him because he wasn't a fan on being slowed down. But his mind was adrift and it's best he focus on the here and now. And what was happening now was his actual first one on one conversation with a fellow Green Mantis member. Not that he hasn't had the opportunity before hand, but more like Valo wanted to keep a certain distance. His first thought when becoming a knight was to ignore everyone else and blitz past them on his way to being one of the best. But this past week has proved that might be more difficult than said.
Valo took a seat at the table with a pretty loud thud, he was a bit tired and was just happy to finally take a seat. He was bit surprised to hear that she wanted to know what other members thought about her, assuming she already had a good idea but Valo would take the time to answer her. But it was only is Valo's nature to have a bit of fun if he could "Well...where to start off. It's a shame you had to hear this from me but.." Valo leaned it quite comically to gesture a whisper over to Artemis. "everyone thinks you smell." Valo let an awkward silence hand in the air before letting out a little laugh to himself. "I'm sorry I'm sorry that wasn't funny. But I couldn't resist. But in all seriousness you have a tremendous amount of respect in Green Mantis, makes me a little frustrated to be honest. But it's ok one day i'll be one of the top wizards in Green Mantis so it won't be long till I catch up to you and i'll be the best." Valo said crossing his arms looking at Artemis, he meant what he said. His goal of being one of the best hasn't changed one bit, but know he had face to match the name of Artemis Somerset. But now his goal had the points in front of him, one of those points was surpassing Artemis.
Eventually Artemis started asking about Valo, and it was only right that he share a little about himself since he did know a few things about her and he was brand new member of Green Mantis.
"Uummm well to start off, I joined this squad probably about a week and half ago now. To be honest so far it's been...ok. Don't know much to say about that really. I'm from Kikka have a bit of a history there which I guess didn't sit well with the other squads. But I guess thats normal here haha, so in time i'll fit right on in. So far this town has been pretty cool and welcoming. Back home I got into a fight everyday, but I haven't gotten into a fight yet since i've been here. So that's a change." The food arrived much to Valo's delight, the hot steam was rising off his food he took a big sniff placed his hands together and began to thank Madam Cherie. He knew better to be rude to someone preparing the food he was about to indulge in. "Aaaahh!! Madam Cherie you've done it again I can tell!! I haven't been here long but I can tell you now you'll be seeing a lot of me from now on!" After that Valo began to dig in his food, not waiting for it to cool down.
"But now tell me about you! Ive told you about me a little, but honestly speaking I only know you from what people in the squad say. And to me that don't mean much talk from other people. So now I won't judge you."
After taking a few bites of his food he let out a loud burp, now that he had food in stomach Valo was pretty relaxed. He then realized that he let out a loud burp in front of a girl, and he could feel the scolding he would get from his mother just because of it. "Aaaahhh I'm sorry that was rude. My mother scolded me before I came here to try and be a little more of a gentleman. I'm not much a gentleman though haha!." he said while continuing to eat, but he would be all ears when she began talking.

Artemis listened to the young man’s response. She had not been surprised that people talk about her. Her name had caused some ripples within the Magic Knights, since she had been offered spots in other Magic Knights squads, yet chose Green Mantis of all the squads. There were rumours that even the Golden Dawn had tried to recruit her for her talent in very deadly illusions. Yet, at the end of the day, Artemis chose the Magic Knights squad that had the least standing among them all. She became a black sheep at that point within the noble social circles, though she really did not mind. At the end of the day, she’s following her gut, and Green Mantis just felt like a better place for her. A place where she did not have to wear her hair up all the time. Not have to be the noblewoman all the time. A place where she can be Artemis without the Somerset. A mage that paved her way herself. Undefined by anything but her own prowess.[break][break]
When he had mentioned that people thought she smelled, Artemis had almost cracked a smile, but instead controlled her features. The joke definitely caught her off-guard, which was not something most people can say they were able to do. This young man was definitely something, and Artemis already liked the sense of humour he had. But truly, what he followed it up was very heartfelt. Artemis knew that people within the Green Mantis squad had quite the respect for her, especially since she was one of their stronger members, save some of the Grand ranked mages, as well as the Vice Captain and Captain. Artemis had worked hard for her advancement, and she could not help but take a little bit of pride from it. However, what made her smirk was his declaration.[break][break]
“Catch up to me, hm?” Artemis asked, her eyebrow lifted as she took another sip of her water. The beef stew was now cooling down, so she might need to start eating soon. “I am very sure that you can catch up to me.” She concluded. Of course, anyone who was willing to push themselves like Artemis did could definitely catch up to her. It’s just a fact that hard work made better mages. However, the problem was that, “I’ll be way past my current level when you finally catch up.” She shrugged, “That just means you need to work twice as hard.” It was true. It was not impossible, but Artemis was sure a determined Magic Knight could do it. She just had never met a more determined Magic Knight besides herself, so this might just be very fascinating to watch from the side lines. “The question is, are you willing to push past your limits every single mission?” [break][break]
Artemis then started on her food, listening to the man’s explanation as to who he was. His story was almost the same as hers, though she had been in a much better spot as a noblewoman. A delinquent, but a noblewoman none the less. He would then ask her about her own past, though Artemis held off answering for a little bit. She would enjoy her beef stew first, savouring every single bite of the divine cooking of Madame Cherie. [break][break]
The question was, what should she share? Of course, sharing her whole past was out of the question. She was, still, after all, a noble lady. The Somerset family kept their private lives private for a reason. It could be used as a weapon later down the road if she ever misspoke. No, she still had to be careful. This Valo person might be a Green Mantis squad member, but she did not know him well enough. Secrets must remain secrets, and so, Artemis decided, just the usual then.[break][break]
“Don’t worry about it.” Waving away his apologies for burping, before starting her own small spiel. “You asked about me. Well, truly, we both have the same kind of past. I was a troublemaker when I was young. Pick-pocketing for fun. Stealing to give to the poor. It was quite an adrenaline-filled childhood.” That was what she lived for, after all. The adrenaline rush she felt while committing crimes. “I was found out, and one thing led to another. Now, here I am.” For the most part, that had been her past. [break][break]
She took another sip to wash the beef stew, before asking, “So, what now, Valo?” Artemis challenged, “You want to catch up to me? To be the best?” She continued, her voice neutral, though more commanding than her usual tone, “What will you be doing to achieve this? Have you gone on missions yet? Trained? Or better yet, have you gained any Gold Stars for the Mantises yet?” [break][break]
Artemis thought it was just a bit much, but she knew if she did not challenge Valo, the man might fizzle out of his zeal. No, she wanted strong and capable Green Mantises. And in order for that to occur, she needed to push the current crop of mages to be better.[break][break]
“The Mantises have been seen in very low light for the past few decades. We should prove everyone wrong, should we not?” Artemis finished her spiel, watching the young man in interest. Maybe he had the will, maybe he didn’t. Only time will tell.

Valo noticed that she had a small smile at his attempt for a joke, he began to think that perhaps she wasn't so bad. But also noticed that she chose to control her features telling him that she liked to be taken seriously and given the amount of respect she especially from other members of the guild he was going to respect that. Or at the least try to. He had to admit even in a setting like this he was still getting used to being so...formal and respectful, back home he was a criminal and part of a gang. But here he had to at least try and switch it up.
Valo listened closely to her response to his statement about him catching up to her. It was true when he did eventually catch up to her, she would most likely be stronger and given what people have said about her drive Valo sure wasn't going to deny that. "Back home I had push past my limits damn near every day. I'm damn sure up for the challenge!" Valo stated with the utmost confidence to succeed. But he knew words meant next to nothing especially coming from a magic knight, in his mind every magic knight probably had the thoughts of being one of the best but few ever do it. Why is that? What's the difference? Valo assumed that he knew the answer to that was to simply put the work in, and never every settle and that's exactly what he planned to do...As soon as he can get his hands on some jobs first though.
Valo gave an ear to her talking about her past, and it sounded a lot like his which caught him off guard a bit. He wouldn't have guessed for someone to look like Artemis and have a history in theft. He let out a chuckle after he swallowed some of his food. "Stealing from the poor and giving back to the rich? Ha I would have never guessed that, you don't really come off as the type you seem so well mannered. Most thieves well...look like me haha!" Valo said then starting to take drink from his water. " Don't get me wrong not judging, more like surprised." he started to eat again, truly enjoying the cooking.
He listened closely when she asked him what were his plans on his way to being one of the best. He had to admit he was a little embarrassed to have to admit that he hasn't gone on a job yet. Not brought in any stars to the Sqaud as of yet, but Valo quickly waved such thoughts away. Focusing on a negative will do little to help him move forward, he could only focus on the here and now and the positives that come from that instead. He was here a magic knight his foot officially in the door and as far as he knew that's all needed to succeed. "Uuggghhhh so I haven't gone on a job yet!! And it's pretty frustrating to be honest, I'm still getting used to how all this magic knight stuff works. I didn't do much research before hand, thought I could just jump in and start taking names punch some faces in. But it's different than what I had imagined."
Valo finished his food and continued on. "But I have been training in the mean time, training a lot actually. Training so when I do get on a job I crush it completely with no doubts." Valo took into consideration what she had said about Green Mantis being seen in a low light. He hadn't thought about that much at all to be honest, when first becoming a magic knight he as only going to look out for himself, while he still going to put himself first he concluded that his success would only mean success for Green Mantis as well. Plus he also liked the idea of being the underdogs of the Clover Kingdom if anything Green Mantis was also like him, and it was time to prove people wrong.
"Haha yeah you're right we should prove everyone wrong! I'll admit I didn't give it much thought but the more I learn all this stuff the more I have to admit it's growing on me. I can take pride in being the underdog that proves everyone in Clover wrong. I'll take you up on that challenge as well Artemis! Your'e pretty good at the motivating stuff almost confused for a Captain!" Valo said turning the chair backwards so he can lean on the back support base. Speaking with Artemis he was growing quite fond of the conversation, he started to realize that he could probably look to her for advice and some good tips. He already had a good idea of her standing in the squad, it wouldn't hurt to pick her brain for the best ways to move forward. "You seem to be well versed in all this stuff, any good tips to give a newbie like me to get started?" Valo asked her awaiting for a response. Maybe she would be nice enough to help him out, he would assume so since she has only been nice and welcoming so far.
Artemis was not surprised that the man had been taken aback by her past. Of course, with her pristine personality, coupled by the fact that she had been very respected by her squad mates, made it so that she might just have a better background than the rest of the Green Mantises. In truth, she was one of them in every sense of the word. Wellm in every sense save for the fact that she was a noblewoman. Aside from that fact, Artemis was a part of the criminal world. At one point, she had been running with a group of thieves stealing from the rich. It had been an experience, truly, to have worked alongside criminals. She was able to see where they were coming from, and their motivations as well. Most of the time, they had been because of poverty, but there were criminals out there who did what they did for the heck of it. Artemis knew that the latter were the most dangerous of them all. She had kept herself away from those types, though she knew that some of them were now a part of the Green Mantis squad. Suffice to say, she kept an eye for those select few, ready to take them out when necessary.[break][break]
She continued to eat her beef stew, having almost finished the meal. The woman still listened to Valo’s explanation of what he had done so far. Or, more so, the lack of things he has done. It was not surprising that a new Magic Knight had no missions assigned to them just yet. The Captain of the Green Mantises, after all, had not been seen for quite awhile now. The Vice Captain was similarly missing in action, at least, that was what Artemis was labelling them now. Truth be told, she did not know what was happening to their two leaders. She had hoped that by this time, both the Captain and the Vice Captain would have made it back from wherever they were. Her wishes, however, were unanswered.[break][break]
He then mentioned that she sounded like a Captain. That one surprised her, though she said nothing as she sipped the last spoonful of Madame Cherie’s beef stew. She made her decision there and then.[break][break]
“So, you wanted me to give you advice, hm?” Artemis started, taking a sip of her water as she thanked Madame Cherie for the beef stew. “Well, I only have one for you.”[break][break]
Artemis stood up, her face still stuck in a calculated expression. She surmised that this would keep her occupied as she waited for either the Captain or the Vice Captain to come back from where they came from. Also, it was helping one of her new squad mates. It was a win win scenario.[break][break]
“You have not been on a mission yet, hm?” Her verbal tick was pronounced, though this was more so because she was trying to recollect the missions that had been available when she had left the squad base this morning. “You’ll do one with me. What better way to showcase your strength than to go on a mission together, hm?”[break][break]
It was less of a question. [break][break]
“So, hurry it up. The moon waits for no one.” Artemis nodded at the young man. She supposed he could refuse, but she was sure he would not. After all, what she said was true. Plus, this would give her a way to assess him and to see his potential.

Valo watched Artemis get up from her seat as he awaited her response. He could tell she was thinking a bit about what kind of advice she would give him, her calculated expression gave it away. He was starting to think what kind of advice she would give him that required such an expression, it must have been a good one. But he was completely shocked to hear that she wanted him to go on a mission with her. The idea never sparked in his mind he didn't think she would bother wasting the time given her position, since he was brand new she really had no reason to. He wasn't used to getting this kind of help before if at all, whenever someone did something nice for you they either had plans to be payed back ten fold after no matter what the cost. Back home him and his gang had to fight, steal, and run just to make some scraps. They quickly realized they couldn't afford to trust anyone. But this place was different at the least, it wasn't back home in Kikka. Most people so far have been nice and welcoming.
"...Aaahhh well I...you know what screw it! Let's do it!" Valo said rising to his feet quickly, slamming his fist into his left hand. Valo hesitated to take her up on her offer at first, because he wanted to prove to himself and other members that he could it all on his own. But when weighing out the pros and the cons he truly had no reason to not go on a mission with Artemis. First of all she was already well known and established, she could probably grab any job she wanted just because of that alone. They would probably be able to take a mission that was above of his current ranking, and that would really put him to the test to see what he could really accomplish at his current level. He also might be able to get a good idea of just how strong and capable Artemis was, which would in turn also give him a good idea of how strong other wizards in her rank were.
He finished off his water with a couple of chugs and placed it back on the table quickly. He turned over to Madam Cherie "The food was excellent again to today Madam, truly your talents in the arts of food craft are legendary!" Valo said very excitedly the fact that he was finally getting a chance to go on a mission, had him super pumped up. For the past week he's been sitting on the side lines waiting for the chance to prove himself, and now he was getting that chance.
He heard her say to hurry it up, and Valo wasted no time after that. Making his way to the door he began cracking his knuckles, with a wicked grin on his face. "The moon waits for no one huh. I like that line! Well we should get moving then!" Valo said starting to walk towards the Green Mantis Base.

Artemis nodded as the young man agreed to her proposal. At the end of the day, it was almost a no brainer for the young man to agree to her proposal. Why would he turn down going on a mission, especially if his plan was to prove himself and become a better mage. Even more so, he had not been on a mission, and that meant that he was probably strapped for yul at this point in time. Well, maybe not strapped, but certainly not rolling in it either. No, he only stood to gain from this partnership, and Artemis made sure to hook him in.[break][break]
More importantly, however, Artemis really did want to see what the young man was capable of. There have been quite a few new recruits to the Green Mantis’ roster, and Artemis wanted to weed out those who might not be suited to be a Magic Knight, and those who were. Of course, at the end of the day, she would be sending her recommendations back to her Captain or her Vice Captain, which meant that she really did not have a say in the matter. However, she had the pull necessary to get a member kicked out if need be. She had done it a couple of times before, having found that members were not doing their part and were using their position to bully the people of Hage. She did not sit down idly on those kinds of things. Artemis could never turn a blind eye.[break][break]
“Let’s go then.” Artemis took the lead as they made their way back to the Green Mantis base. There should be some mission left behind that were just a little more difficult than the usual junior ranked ones. This should test out the young man’s skills, and would give Artemis a good semblance on where he stood. It will be interesting indeed.[break][break]
