While the western shorelines of Clover seem to struggle and Raque faces a beast from the depths, the fact that several fishing settlements along the eastern shoreline have started disappearing has more or less gone unnoticed. Both because nobody got out to tell the tale, but also because no one ever saw the threat coming. For as a strange mist came rolling in from the ocean that felt like frost, it was too late for most. However, with one of the fishermen getting out in time and reaching one of the nearby villages, he tells a tale of strange dragons approaching from the mist before men, women and children alike got murdered by something unseen. As such, it falls upon you to investigate the fishing settlements that have been attacked and figure out what happened.

Health Limit: Intermediate Mana Skin: Junior [break]Physical Speed: 10 m/s [break]Physical Damage: Intermediate [break]Magic Element and Types: N/a [break]Combat Style: These men clad in heavy armor have no need for magic, not when they are protected by their specially crafted gear to keep them warm and safe, and have their battleaxes and blades to carve up some skulls with. While only to a lesser extent, their armor protects them from lesser magic. [break]Additional Information: These men come from a yet unknown region which is believed to be an island far to the south. Coming from a harsh and frozen climate, they raid and loot whatever they can and bring it back to their villages where most vegetation refuses to grow and only the animals native to their lands can thrive. Because they were raised with nothing, they choose to take everything from those who grew up with everything, which is a category they consider the average clover citizen to be. As such, they do not care about shedding some blood here and there, doing so without remorse.
Health Limit: Intermediate [break]Physical Speed: 8 m/s [break]Physical Damage: Intermediate [break]Magic Element and Types: Freeze | Sensory [break]Combat Style: Creating and maintaining their ice cold fog banks, they fight using staves as they are not truly warriors like the raiders they accompany. Still, coming from a culture where might makes right, they are still more skilled in battle than your average individual. [break]Additional Information: Where the raiders might not believe they need magics for battle or for safety, the Mistcallers call upon the powers of their native island spirits, creating a freezing fog that obscures their longboats as they travel. Always having a single mistcaller with every ship, they look after the raiders and make sure to navigate their own mists with pinpoint accuracy.
For about a week now, stories had been traveling throughout the common and forsaken regions, but seemed to have taken their time in getting to the royal capital or the magic squads. People going missing in the coves along the western border near and around Hapshass, where people have reported hearing strange singing in the middle of the night, as well as eerie lights moving beneath the waves. Entire fishing communities disappearing in a matter of minutes along the eastern border, coming together with a strange mist rolling in from the open ocean and reports of dragons moving inside of them and potentially being the case of both the mist and the disappearances. All of it had reached Griswold’s ears as he passed from one inn or tavern to the next, and clearly most of it was just a bunch of exaggerated stories and old wives tales told by people in passing.
Still, the fact that he had heard about these things popping up recently in various locations across both the forsaken region and the common region meant that there was likely some truth to it, which was why he had gone east first. With the festivities going on in Hapshass, he had seen various magic knights and other capable mages being gathered in the area to take part in the celebrations, meaning there were at the very least people around in case something happened. When it came to the farming communities that weren’t too far from where he was, or the fishing settlements along the shoreline, that was not the case. They were as unprotected and forgotten as they ever were, which usually worked out in their favor as trouble usually remained far away from those who had nothing to give. Clearly this time, whoever had gotten to these places had not been after any valuables.
In the past twenty four hours, Griswold had been moving along the shore, only stopping to inspect the settlement he passed by. In every location he had passed, he had smelled the same metallic scent in the air, one that was different from the puddles of blood he found. In both of the settlements he had come across, there were signs of struggle, signs of battle, and signs of death. The amounts of blood he found made it clear that people had bled out, though the fact that there were no bodies anywhere bothered him. No attempts had been made at tossing them into the ocean, sticking them inside of a fisherman’s tent somewhere or putting them into a shallow grave, meaning whatever had killed these people had either eaten them, or taken them along. For a while, he had wondered as to what he might have been looking for because of it, wondering whether or not he was searching for some kind of hungry monster or beast or not.
But that train of thought came to a grinding halt when he found footprints leading out of the village thanks to a patch of beach clay. Shocked to find so many of them, it was hard to tell exactly how many people had been here, but it was clear that they had moved from and back to the ocean after the slaughter was complete. Adding to the belief that this had been done by people was the fact that in both places, all of the food, water and beverages had been taken, which was not something a monster would do. Still stuck wondering why such a large group would maneuver along the shoreline, collecting bodies, food and water and very little else, Griswold had made his way to the third settlement in line. Or rather, he could see it from a distance. What he could also see was the large bank of fog laying in wait in a large area surrounding it, both on the side of the ocean and along the route leading further inland.
Whatever this meant, he wasn’t entirely sure, though he knew that he wouldn’t be finding out anything by just lingering. He had to get into the settlement and see what he was working with. Because the mist was still out there, there was a chance that he might still be able to find someone who could be saved, or maybe whatever had happened to the other settlements had not yet transpired here. And so, with his sword strapped to his back, Griswold began venturing towards the place, being as prepared as he could be while keeping his senses sharp. If anyone was going to be making a move here, it wouldn’t go unnoticed.
Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves at the festivals going on for just about everyone in the kingdom from the lowest commoner to the highest royalty but what was Karro doing? He was being tasked with figuring out what has happened to some fishing communities that sat on the edge of the country. While Karro enjoyed his share of fishing and boating and even surprisingly got along with the fishermen he would rather be at the festivities and indulging in his desires as someone of royalty should be allowed to do. Sighing deeply he proceeded to the first village that had been lost or at least the nearest one that hadn’t contacted anyone in some time. Karro was in full work mode and was busy analyzing the settlement as he picked up signs of a battle, attack marks and dried blood scattered throughout the place. The entire settlement was quiet and deserted, there weren’t even crows or ravens to pick at the corpses that would normally be scattered around but that was because there wasn’t a single body or speck of any of the villagers.
“Great so the attackers either ate them, dragged them off or are so powerful they turned the bodies into nothing.” Karro said out loud as he continued to make his way through the various settlements finding the same markings and battle signs. Each village was empty of bodies but full of signs of a struggle, Karro’s annoyance and anger slowly built as he found nothing more then “People have been killed here but that’s all I got for ya” in each place he went. The only difference was finding some actual footprints and noticing a fresher set of footprints, He hadn’t been told anything about another person out here looking into the disappearances but then again he doubted he would be the only Magic Knight that would be sent out to figure this out. After all he was only sent cause Lydia had other duties to take care of so as a representative of the Azure Deer he was tasked out for this investigation.
“Well any enemy that can make all these villages disappear so easily without leaving a single body or trace beyond those footprints I found has to be strong. So as long as whoever is out here isn’t a burden then this will be worth the effort.” Karro thought to himself as he closed in on the person in front of him. Karro was actively letting his mana out when he noticed he was getting closer, making sure to introduce himself before he got to close he didn’t have time to deal with being attacked. “Excuse me, I’m trying to find out where the locals went I was sent to pick up a delivery. Can you help me out?” Karro called out to the figure figuring if he put up a front on being on a simple errand either he could take the person by surprise if they were an enemy or save some trouble of causing a misunderstanding if the person was another Magic Knight.
“That depends entirely on how well you can handle yourself in a fight, and how quickly you can process new information.”
Responding to the question given without turning around to actually acknowledge the guy standing behind him, his gaze did not leave the settlement and the fog bank that seemed to be moving ever so slightly. Having imagined that the fog would somehow cover the place and obscure it from sight, the fact that it was moving away from it made him believe that they might already have been too late. Judging by how this new arrival had asked Griswold to aid him, the fact that Griswold was already present before the guy came around might have made it more obvious for the guy to ask if he could have helped Griswold out. But he wasn’t here to argue semantics, he was here to see if there were still people around that could be saved from whatever fate awaited them inside of these strange mists. And if there was a chance this guy could actually help out with that, all the better.
“But yes, I do imagine two people can arguably accomplish more than one. Though judging by the state of the mist, there’s a good chance we’re already too late here.”
With that, he began to approach the settlement as more and more of it became properly visible. Even during the approach, it was clear to see based on blood being spattered against the side of tents and along the floor that the actual fight had already taken place. That was, if one could call it that, as whatever was responsible for these occurrences had been going along the coast for a while now and got better at what they or it did. Whereas their “opponents”, innocent fishermen, had most likely not had any idea as to what came over them when they were suddenly attacked and massacred. While a select few might have been able to put up a fight, it would soon become clear that it had most likely not mattered enough to save their own, or any other lives. Beginning his stroll across the settlement, likely followed by this new arrival, Griswold could make out clear and obvious drag marks in the bloodied sand.
Bending through his knees to get a closer look at the drag marks, he experienced mixed emotions due to the depth of the marks. Knowing well enough by now due to a lifetime of living in the great outdoors that the depth of a drag mark was caused by the weight of what was being dragged, the possibility of there being men and women, but also children being dragged down this path was a saddening thought indeed. Not bringing up this point because he might be wrong, and rather much hoped he was wrong, it was better to keep it to himself because he was already angered plenty by this thought. And it would be hard to keep his own emotions in check, which would be hard enough without having to worry about what this new guy might do once he was given this knowledge. So for the time being, it was better to just keep things to himself. Fortunately enough, by the time they encountered the first signs of life, there were no bodies in sight.
Along the outskirts of the settlements, it seemed that a bunch of strangely dressed men were working towards rounding up the last of the supplies that they could scrounge together before they would also move on out. Judging by their armor and general appearance, they were not your average bandits, even going as far as doubting these men were even from the land of Clover to begin with. Spotting tattoos in a peculiar style along what little skin these men showed, the armor itself appeared to be a mix of light leather and heavy plate in the portions where it truly mattered such as the chest, not to mention the heavy looking helmets. Based on their appearance alone, one could tell that these men were quite used to doing battle, though one of them stood out from the small group of warriors. Although covered from head to toe in tattoos, he was not wearing any armor, instead appearing more dressed in a more ceremonial fashion rather than being tactical.
Watching the motions of his hands and staff, it seemed as if this was the man that was responsible for controlling the mist, which would explain why it appeared in such a selective manner whenever a settlement was about to be wiped out. If this were to be the only one capable of doing such things, he imagined it wouldn’t be too hard for the magic squads to handle the rest, as a large force of hostile warriors should not be hard to find. However, the earlier mist he had seen that was headed further inland proved that this was most likely not the case, not unless this particular man possessed spells that covered a ridiculous range. Not yet having been noticed, Griswold turned around for the first time to look at his compatriot, finding out this guy was actually a magic knight himself. Interesting, albeit unexpected, though it did explain why the guy spoke to him the way he did, what with him having more authority than a civilian such as Griswold.
“I doubt these people are of the talking sort, so we’re better off dispatching them and looking for tracks once they’ve been dealt with. They’re clearly but a fraction of the group that is responsible for this, gathering up what little remains here before attempting to catch up with the rest.”
Karro noticed the man in question hardly paid attention to him and instead kept his eyes on the settlement in front of them, especially mentioning the mist. Now that it had been pointed out the mist that had been so surrounding seemed to be slowly dissipated or as he watched it more it seemed to be moving away from the settlement. There was something definitely going on here more then what Karro had been able to discover while he had been making his way through the other settlements that had disappeared. It also seemed that this man in front of him was more knowledgeable about the situation then Karro was though that was to be expected given how little information he had been given for this mission and how little information he had been able to gather from the other settlements. This irked the young Ravencrest in many ways but more that he was still lacking in so many areas, it was something that he made note of to increase his level of training once he returned after this mission for now he followed beyond the man and made note of ease the man moved through the area like someone who had grown up here or had survived for quite some time in the wild himself. There were tons of questions that Karro had for the man but for now he simply followed and did his best not to make any noises and kept an eye on the surroundings making sure to not be a burden.
As they closed in on the settlement the signs that Karro had become so familiar with after visiting the other settlements were here, blood on the buildings and tents that dotted the area, drag marks along the ground and sand just like all the other places he had come to know something horrid had happened here and upon closer look at the blood stained walls Karro noticed that it was still wet not yet hardened and brittle like the stains he had come upon before.
It seemed that the man he was following was noticing the same things and was probably noticing more then the young Ravencrest could find himself. The farther they moved into the settlement they never came in contact with anyone or anything living and it was like death had touched this place on a scale that was impossible but as they came closer to the coast along the outskirts of the settlement Karro was made aware that someone or something was here, it wasn’t till the man in front of him stopped himself that Karro saw what he assumed was the cause of the disappearance of the village. These bandits were not the common fodder that Karro had come to know about and have dealt with in the past. Each one was wearing leather and metal armor focusing more on limited protection to the vitals and allowing free movement for speed. Their movements as they rounded up the supplies showed they were more organized then any group that the young Ravencrest had heard of expect maybe of the infamous group Eclisped Ravens but even then it had been quite some time since that group had even shown its face and was even speculated to have been disbanded. Putting that train of thought aside Karro continued to study the group noticing the strange markings on the bodies of these invaders. “Where are these heathens from?” Karro muttered to himself, these were certainly veterans and there was someone here that was clearly different from the others it was a man with a staff and wore clothing of similar materials but in a different fashion more of a mystic style then warrior that the others seemed to wear.
Karro nodded his head as the man he had partnered up with spoke. “I agree this must be the rear-guard and if that is so then taking them out and finding the main group would allow us the element of surprise if done correctly.” He would say as he studied the group, there was a variety of warriors and it seemed to just be 1 of the mystic that Karro could see at the time. He only hoped that there wasn’t anymore of the main group nearby or it would make this that much more difficult but as long as they kept the element of surprise when attacking they should be able to take out quite a few of them easily.
“My name is Karro. How should we dispatch of these invaders?” Karro would say easily as he took his place next to the man.
“You know, you’re absolutely right. Getting rid of these guys would be quite beneficial to our cause. Besides…”
Before finishing his sentence, he made his way over to the nearest one of the enemies, one hand resting on the handle of his sword as he lifted it from over his shoulder. Bringing it down hard and fast as he used the momentum of someone who could move at a speed of twenty meters per second when at his natural fastest point, the blade was not held stopped by the armor one bit. The moment the blade came down on the shoulder of the raider, the time it took for it to rip all the way through him and sever his torso into two halves seemed to be within half a second and a second. Sliding through like a hot knife through butter, he did not stop there, as the first strike was merely meant to catch the invading raiders off guard, making it that much easier for him to do what he did best.
Having murdered one of the men with his blade, he had created a temporary opening through which he could freely attack the one person that was not wielding any weaponry of his own, aside from a crude staff. Revealing a sphere of solar mana he had charged up during his approach, he extended his hand, releasing the sphere at a high speed as it shot between to dumbfounded warriors and hit the caster right in the abdomen. Violently erupting in a towering inferno that caught three of the closest raiders and swallowed them up too, there were two of them left that had at this point started quaking in their boots. Likely believing they would be next to taste the cosmic flames of Griswold’s solar magic, this was in fact not going to be the case. Holding up his weapon, the two remaining men held their at the read, only to see the elven knight put his back into the holster on his back.
“These guys don't really pose much of a threat to us anyway. If you would be so kind as to root out the stragglers, I’ll do a quick bit of scouting and tracking and wait for you further up. Can’t waste too much time here with the small fry now can we.”
And with that, he just walked away from the last two warriors, who were understandably grasping for straws, not being able to make heads or tails out of what had just happened. Now, if they wanted to attack him, they could go ahead and do just that, though it seemed that for all that they were worth, they believed they were better off going after the other guy that had introduced himself as Karro. With one of the warriors cut down in place before he could even respond, three more burned to a crispy suit of armor and their mage reduced to ash, they no longer had their mist to move inside of. So even if they were to survive here and try to make their way back to the main group, there was a fair chance that someone would find them and deal with them, or get dealt with. For that matter, he was not entirely sure if Karro would be able to hold his own against two of these warriors, but chose to believe in his power.
The guy was a magic knight who had been doing his own research into the matter from the sound of things, and if there was anything he believed in to some degree, especially when it came to the royal capital, it was the belief that the wizard king of all people would know what he was doing. So if his office were to give the okay to some magic knight who wanted to look into a case such as this one, the man wouldn’t likely send someone who wouldn’t be able to hold his own against your run of the mill warriors that did not even seem to be in possession of any actual magic of their own. That said though, when his blade had run itself through the armor of one of the raiders, he felt that there was at least some magic at work there, just one that did not mean a whole lot when paired against the might of his weapon. While Karro would be left to deal with the two warriors in a way he felt fitting, Griswold would go about looking for the tracks he’d need to follow if they were to properly locate the main fighting force.
With a bit of luck, what he would be able to find out would get them that much closer to the origin of this threat, what brought them here to begin with and maybe towards finding out what might get them to go back. That said, knowing full well what things often came down to, everything was pointing to the two of them having to put every single one to death before the pillaging and slaughtering would be brought to a halt.
POWER 175 DURABILITY 3 SENSORY 72 STAMINA 43 CONTROL 113 MANA 200 (-30 +35 = no mana lost)
Name of Spell: Variable Star: Parallax Elemental Type: Solar Rank & Spell Type: Senior | Attack Creation & Sensory Range & Speed: 100 meters (40 m AoE) | 50 m/s Mana Cost: 30 mp | 15 mp sustain Stats Effected: +9 Power, Blind Applicable Perks: Overpowered, Quick Shot, Skilled Sniper & Battle Knight (& Area of Triumph) Description: A spell that releases a fast moving ball of solar mana at a target determined upon the moment of creation. Utilizing "homing" rules in order to chase down the target until the projectile is destroyed or the caster runs out of mana, it also uses "ammo" rules to increase the amount of projectiles fired by 1 for every 75 Control the caster has. Initialized by first making himself glow before firing them, in addition, these projectiles flare up from time to time, allowing them to blind those looking at it for one whole post. These "stars" can flare up to blind someone once every two posts in which they're active, making them rather tricky to deal with. Upon hitting a target, they explode to cover a certain radius, knocking targets back 8 meters + 5 meters for every 10 Power the caster possesses. During the day, the spell takes on an orange hue, taking on a silver blue hue after dark.
As quickly as Karro introduced himself to the man he had joined in this adventure, the man agreed with his plan of using the element of surprise and just as easily sliced one of the raiders in half with his sword from shoulder to hip with a speed that Karro had only seen from his Cousin Lydia. The man continued to show his prowess using what looked to be beams of solar magic lighting the rest of the group up in flames and the cries of the enemies were quickly snuffed out by the lack of oxygen in their lungs. Karro had just then started moving as the man continued to show his skills and decimated the majority of the group though once he was done taking care of the enemies he was near he replaced his weapon into the holster that was on his back and began to search for clues of the main force.
It was reasonably left to Karro to finish off the last of the group with the enemy being only two left. They were baffled and destressed wondering who or what had just happened because of the element of surprise and the show of massive force by the stranger had decimated their whole landing party and while it was just the rear guard they were each veteran raiders that had more then a handful of coast raids under their belt and their mages while not top class knew how to use their magic efficiently and effectively now they were gone and most were just burnt corpses after this tall stranger wielding a sword had walked from the brush. Now it was Karro’s turn to deal with the last of the group and while he had nothing fancy that would wow anyone while watching he was quite able to deal with the last of the group easily.
Grabbing his grimoire he allowed his mana to flow easily and into the book, picturing the ideal spell for this moment which he thought would be the spell Lance and threw his arm out allowing the spell to form looking like 2 large globs of blood pouring upward into the sky above Karro then slowly forming into 2 large Lances that gleamed with the light of the moon. He targeted the remaining two warriors who were starting to recover from the initial shock and sent one of each lance at the enemies spearing them both through the mid-section. The mana skin of both warriors was pierced and blood started to drip from their wounds, they were greatly injured but not defeated just yet. Thinking that whoever the companion was for the mysterious man that had decimated their group was some weakling the warriors prepared to strike back but Karro simply smiled and cast the spell Dagger summoning two blood daggers into his hands. Throwing them with a quickness befitting one who had been trained by Lydia, they impaled themselves into the warriors skulls quickly extinguishing what little bit of life was still remaining in them.
Checking the bodies of the enemy for any information or clues on who they were or where they came from Karro met up with his still unintroduced companion and was more then ready to continue the investigation of where the main group of these invaders had gone. “Well at least this bit was easy especially if one of us is simply able to just destroy the majority of the group with one spell. That was quite impressive if I say so myself, you will have to tell me your background as we journey forward.” Karro said with respect.
