[attr="class","ardereescroll"]Ardere stood in the Yuiee Estate, flaming swords orbiting his form like moons around a planet. This was no ordinary day at the Estate--no, it was a Vice Captain Exam. Hania challenged the Crimson Lion Captain and rightfully so, hoping to ascend to the position of Vice Captain. While the Crimson King had no doubt in his mind that the Ravencrest was worthy, he'd have to prove it here and now. While the other Crimson Lion members were off on drills, here they stood together engaged in battle as the Kasai had many times before. [break][break] Silas. Emily. Lydia. Ardere had gone through more Vice Captains than most, some for better reasons than others. Hania was different than all three of them, but he had a feeling this was a good thing. The Lions needed a different path to strength than they had before. This was no longer the reign of Lysander or his protégé. The fire mage was a different man than he was back then. Pain changed people. Loss changed even the strongest. Give me your all, Hania. You've earned the right to challenge me. Now you must earn the right to hold the position. The flames circling around him with a rhythm began to twirl back and forth, exhibiting his sheer control over the blades themselves. Unlike most mages of flame, he exerted a titanic amount of control in his manipulation of fire. You're different than Lydia. She's a monstrous mage. Deserving of the title she had. But I think you are as well. Show me what makes you the kind of mage you are. A blazing aura crept across his body until it burst like a bonfire towards the sky. The real exam was to begin. [break][break] His mind wandered to the past for a moment, as it often did. Memories of fighting dragons and Ifrit with old friend were both gifts as well as curses. So many had moved on to other lives or places and yet he still remained. Ardere felt blessed and cursed at the same time. After all of these years, why was he the one left alive? A part of him knew the answer, but it was not easy to admit. Maybe there was nothing wrong with being needed. Once he would have given everything to be the hero of this kingdom, but now he was back at the goal he had set when his father passed; protect the people you love. The thing was, he loved everything in this land. He had more to lose now than ever, but he wasn't afraid. All signs would have pointed to fear, but he wasn't. He felt strength in the uncertainty and faith he had in this path. One day he would fight a battle that would decide it all. Ardere only hoped he could spend as much time with his beloved Lions until then.

[attr="class","haniaimage"]❝I hear a song of woe shadowing our past in sorrow.❞
[attr="class","haniascroll"]The is mage stood silent and still, listening to the tranquil world around him. He knew these current surroundings were nothing more than a mask to the harsh truth that lay just beyond the protective mists of the Yuiee estate but still for now he was at peace. The estate somewhat reminded him of his birthplace both bitter and sweet as it may be, that was a different time, a different life than the one he currently had. He was still not fully healed from overexerting himself during his dive training but the squad had been called to this serene place so they could train in a more balanced way. In honesty, the ice mage had never any intention to challenge for the vice-captain position but yet he had that day. Did he believe he was up for the task? Yes. Did he really want it? No, because it meant he would have to deal with people.
So, the question could be asked if he didn't want it due to his want to not deal with people then why would he challenge? The answer was simple for the ice mage. His squad was suffering due to the void left in the leadership and so the people they helped would suffer also. He didn't want anyone to be confused, he didn't want anyone to suffer if he could help it. This was part of his duties after all and so would fulfil it to the best of his ability. He had also placed himself in the mindset if he did fail upon this day then he would strengthen himself and attempt the feat another time. He may not have the hot head of the Vermilion but he was tenacious and when he had resigned himself to doing something he would see it through until completion or death.
Soon enough he would open his eyes revealing the ice blue below his gaze turned upon his captain who was ready to do battle, he knew they would have to hold back to some extent because even in the training grounds high above the estate they would still be able to do a lot of damage to it and those who called it home. He listened to the elder mages words and nodded "For the safety of the area surrounding us and those below us, I request that we stick to single target spells lest we anger our hosts." he would say his voice the same calm and stoic tone that it always held, he knew that this fight was important and this may put a handicap on the elder mage but believed his reasoning was more than enough for such a thing to be taken into consideration.
He sighed almost in frustration as his sister was brought it once more in conversation, on more than one occasion he had heard about his sister before being told he was different from her. "I would hope so captain as we are separate people. I will, however, request that you do not liken me to her." It wasn't so much a touchy subject but he was sick of hearing how similar yet different than he was from his sister. He was his own person, with his own strengths and weaknesses, his own past, his own hopes, desires and wants and it almost felt like they were being dwarfed because of the people he called family. All too often his mannerisms were put down to his upbringing and his sister's influence, he couldn't deny in some part this was true but vastly it had started before he even knew Lydia Ravencrest even existed.
"My sister is a great mage, I can not deny this but I am not her shadow and would rather not feel like I am being likened to it." he continued, his tone hadn't changed but the elder mage would have been around him enough to hear the subtle undertones of irritation and sadness. All too often everything was put down to Lydia or his family name, he wanted to make his own mark as his own person and this is why unless he really needed to would never even mention his last name when introducing himself to someone. His eyes remained steadfast on the flaming swords in front of him, how he hated fire and wondered why he ended up going toe to toe with fire users more often than not these days.
In a battle of power or strength he knew there would be no way he could compete with the man in front of him, he was also quite sure that the man was in possession of ki so that took another strength of his off the table. He had more experience than the ice mage so couldn't use that either and believed their speeds would be similar. All in all, he knew that he was boned in this fight if it had been anything other than a trial. This wasn't about the ice mage falling the mountain of a man before him. No. This was him needing to prove that he would push past his limits, to show his determination and strength when up against a stronger foe, that he wouldn't back down even if the odds were stacked against him. "This reminds me of the Royal Knight exams" he said with a small chuckle. "Attacker or defender captain?" he would allow the older to choose which he wished to be, this was going to be an interesting game of chess that was for sure.
Rank & Element: Junior ¦ Light Class & Type: Relic ¦ Accessory (bracelet) Magic Specializations: Physical Reinforcement ¦ Healing Appearance & Lore: A simple bracelet made out of reinforced glass with an opalite charm dangling from it almost like a pendulum, that gives off a dull light during the day and a bright light during the night preventing any natural shadow from forming.
There is nothing of major historical importance or deep story into where this item came from. The white-haired heir of the Ravencrest family has suffered from terrible day and night terrors since he was young and still does to this day. When asked what is wrong he brushes it off telling people not to worry it was a condition he had. He will never go into the terrible things he sees, in fact, he personally wishes he could forget he quickly realized that his perfect memory was a double edge sword and at times he truly wished he didn't have it.
His elder sister Lydia was the first to realize that it happened more when he was in an emotional state or surrounded by darkness. She also realized that he refused to sleep unless every light source he could find was active or he would sleep outside under the sun during the day, this wasn't optimal as he was to be trained to take over the family if anything were to happen to Lydia. Still, there wasn't much anyone could think to do to help him as he refused to open up but even if they could that came with a different set of hurdles they had to get over. Hania earlier in his life wouldn't take things from people due to his treatment before being adopted.
It took a while but Lydia finally found a way to help her younger brother, she had a crystal made with light inside and told him to use it when he sleeps. She said it was hers and she just wanted to see if it would help. He was reluctant but she said it only had to be a few days so he accepted. Throughout those few days, he slept somewhat peacefully so it was clear that it helped but not enough, she could only guess that the light wasn't strong enough. She realized this would be fine for a normal child afraid of the dark but it was clear to the pink-haired woman that this wasn't a normal situation.
She personally designed what she believed would help him the most, she chose the materials, their appearance even the opalite that dangles from it. As the bracelet was being made she slowly started to imbue her own element into the glass beads and the opalite as the former was created and the latter was shaped. It took close to a year to complete but Lydia seen it as something that should be done slow and steady, this was to make sure that it was done right the first time and that no matter what it would be near indestructible for whatever he may face in life.
On what is now classed as Hania's eighth birthday after a certain incident happened, she gave him a box, within it laid the bracelet. He was told to keep it with him always as she would be there to keep the darkness at bay and watching over him so he could be at peace while he rested. From that moment he has always kept it with him even if he hasn't always worn it.

[attr="class","ardereescroll"]Every Vice Captain has brought something different to the table. I don't compare any of them. I expect you will bring something unique to our squad as well. Ardere's aura continued to shimmer across his form like the bonfire of a mage he was. Hania was indeed unique but would that be enough to get him through this dangerous trial? Only time would tell. Nevertheless the Crimson Lion Captain found himself excited for the first time in some time. Lydia had moved on to accomplish her own goals, but the two Vice Captains prior to her had left scars on the Kasai's heart--scars that had not fully healed. Without Lydia he felt hopeless for some time, but life was about finding ways to carry on despite the pain one feels. Ardere was unfortunately gifted in this respect. He need only look within himself to find strength, however there was no shame in relying on someone else for a bit--no shame at all. It was okay to need help. This was something he struggled to learn for years but here he was, ready to trust someone else. Perhaps the strength of his squad was that they could lean on one another. [break][break] It was an interesting question but Ardere already prepared his answer before the two stepped foot onto the estate. I'll defend. The fire mage was no stranger to utilizing his offensive capabilities as a form of defense. When one's magical power was so insurmountable, it could be used to defend rather than attack. His control over the blazing crimson flames around him was proof enough that he understood the gravity of what he was attempting. Hania was not as experienced as him, but he was smart. The Ravencrest was no push over and it would be a deadly mistake to assume so. He merely need to push the ice mage to his limits before calling this exam. Everyone had their limits, it just took some longer to reach them than others. Come at me with everything you've got. If you can manage to break past any of my defenses, I will acknowledge you. [break][break] Ardere could not help but think back on his Vice Captain's exam, back when he and the Ifrit went toe to toe against one another. The black flames almost consumed him but he managed to shatter his mentor's armor for just a moment. Even if it was only one solid hit, he had managed to prove himself at a time when it was everything to him. Now the greatest obstacle in his way was himself, not the Daemon or mages above him; himself. The Captain had been at war with himself for quite some time and for the first time in what felt like an eternity; he felt peace. Inside his soul was not a forest fire, it was a calm flame. While it may be the size of a bonfire, it was not raging anymore. The rivers of fire in his spirit had calmed now, but he feared this was only temporary. A bigger fight was on the horizon.

[attr="class","haniaimage"]❝I hear a song of woe shadowing our past in sorrow.❞
[attr="class","haniascroll"]The ice mage took in what the elder male was saying to him, he was well aware that every vice-captain bought something different to the table and that he should be no different but he knew in his heart he was only doing this because the squad had a void. He really didn't want the position but he didn't want the squad suffering any more than it had to, it was selfish of him to think of his personal comfort, if another challenged for it then they could have it if they were worthy enough. Until that day he would be willing to bear the burden of the vice-captain position if he himself was found worthy enough to hold such a title. He was no slouch in his training but he had a long way to go before he would be anywhere near the league of his sister or captain.
This didn't bother him in the slightest as he had his own things to work on and wouldn't ever use them as mountains to ever get to the summit of, it wasn't how his mind worked, of course, he wouldn't ever look down on people like Chisana and Valo who did each person had their own paths and how they managed to take each and every step in their journey. "It isn't just the vice-captain that brings something unique to the table, every squad member does..." Of course, they weren't as off the wall bonkers as the Black Bulls but they weren't as full of themselves as the Silver Eagles either. They were somewhere in the middle of the two extremes. "There is more than us within the squad after all." he knew he was stating the obvious but he honestly believed that only looking at what a potential vice-captain could bring to the table was narrow-minded at best.
He knew his captain was far from being slow or dense but he wanted to voice his opinion on his choice of wording, many may have seen it as him playing politics but it was just his personal opinion. It was true that he was like a shark within the noble courts, they had underestimated him because he had been adopted into the Ravencrest but he proved that sharks were born swimming. Still, he knew the trial in front of him was going to be far from easy but he had been trained to be able to take a good beating and still get up until what he wished to be done was finished or to die trying. He was quite sure his captain wouldn't push him to that extent but perhaps that's what he needed. "I don't want you to hold back Captain Kasai." he closed his eyes as he said that one sentence.
"Put me to my limits and pushed me beyond them, I only do not wish the estate to be affected by this. I would feel guilty for disrupting the harmony." he said his eyes opening the ice blue was showing hints of storm grey in one of the eyes, his body language had changed completely, it was still reserved but he removed his outer garments his grimoire being placed to his side. He was wearing a white silk sleeveless mandarin shirt and his matching trousers made him seem completely different. The reason was he normally wore a loose baggy hanfu. "Let us begin." he said moving into a fighting stance, the one he chose should have been impossible for him to know. The stance was a rare one Ard's ancestors had used, the ice mage decided if he was going to fight fire he best use their own fighting style against them.
Still, he was at a disadvantage in strength and element but this wouldn't stop him. It was then the ice mage held out his left hand like he's holding something his eyes frosting for a mere moment as a spear made of ice appears in his hand, he released it from his hand an additional spear appearing forming next to the first. He would have preferred to have used sword against the fire mages but it would have been nowhere near strong enough to deal with what he was facing so needed to use something stronger at least in the beginning, more so as he knew this spell would make him faster which would be able to help him a little. Moving his left hand out forward his palm towards the enemy makes a single ice arrow around five inches long again an additional arrow was created this time there were three of them.
'Careful you are using a lot of mana right off the bat.' the ice spirit told him 'I am quite aware of this fact, sometimes it is required however and this is a calculated risk.' he sent back his eyes not leaving the male in front of him. He remained in the stance but used his right hand to force the spears towards the swords while the arrows aimed for Ard himself which he himself quickly followed, this fighting stance was meant for close combat and so he would do just that. It was true he didn't look like he would be any good due to his feathered features but how toned his arms were showed he took care of himself and intensely trained but then given the family he was from if he didn't he would have been a bit of an oddity.
