Having previously boarded Verona’s freebooting vessel, the Red Solaria, much of the time spent on board had been spent with cast lines in preparation for fish to start biting. While the goal had been to reach a certain cove where fish were supposed to be plenty and diverse in numbers and size, for some reason, they had been drifting for a while. Simply sitting by the taffrail of the deck, Gawain looked out across the open ocean while keeping an eye on his bobber. Up until this point in time, he had caught a few fish, though most of them hadn’t exactly appeared like the kind that would be winning any prizes. Turning around to look at the large glass basin that stood in the center of the ship, he could tell that there had already been several other people who had caught their own and tossed them into it.
In a way, the large tank that had been attached to the deck with various ropes and latches, and mostly kept itself in place due to the sheer weight of it, had started looking like some sort of exposition on oceanic life. Not being all that knowledgeable when it came to species of fish, there were some of them that he remembered from his childhood, as well as from the period he spent on Skjaergard. Some oceanic fish could be found just about anywhere after all. Mackerel, groupers, mullets and snappers. Sure, most of these came in a variety of shapes and sizes, though it was fairly simple to figure out which was which when you held them in your hands. So far, his biggest fish had been a yellow finned grouper, though that wasn’t even close to the biggest fish inside of the tank right now. The biggest fish being yet another type of grouper that seemed to have already eaten some of the other smaller fish.
It was one of those things the organization that set this up had most likely not thought about. Then again, maybe they had, as the largest fish would end up eaten some of the smaller ones and thus end up thinning the numbers and make it easier to see which side won. After all, no one wanted to have to go through a tank full of fish and weigh each and every one of them by hand.
Still, something was bothering him about the way in which Verona and her number two had just been locked up inside of her cabin, only coming out every so often with a spyglass to peer into the distance. It was clear that they had been sensing something that he hadn’t, maybe something related to the fact that they had been seemingly dead in the water for some time with no fishing cove in sight. For as peaceful as the fishing experience was, the fact that Gawain felt like he was being kept in the dark about something made that peacefulness drift away into the depths of the abyss beneath them as quickly as it came. He wanted to know what was going on. Looking towards the girl and her protector, he spoke in a muffled tone of voice while hiding his mouth behind his sleeve. There were still a fair amount of freebooters around them, and he didn’t want to cause any kind of conflict on a day such as this.
“Don’t be alarmed, but I think something’s off. The captain has been inside of her cabin for a very long time, and we still haven’t even seen this cove we were supposed to be taken to. Do you think they know about something bad happening that they don't want us to know about?”

Sumire was at first apprehensive about trying out this new adventure. She had a job and errands to run yet she was here enjoying being on top of a pirate ship. Oh the punishments she is going to get if father found out. not that it would be too bad. She was waiting on some items to be found among the various shipments that in itself was going to take awhile anyways.
She took in the salty sea air truly feeling excited and curious of the sea. She loved her family and being home but there has always been an adventurous side to herself. Her father has always managed to keep her from adventuring out and get harmed to the best of his abilities but she has always been a wandering spirit. She loved hearing stories and seeing new things and places. Even now she was technically grounded for family matters but when it comes to her job that is above being grounded regardless of the punishment.
"It is amazing to see a clear sky." She said looking over the railing as she hopped back down closing her eyes bringing a sleeved covered hand infront of her mouth. She listened to his assumption and reassurance "I might be a noble lady, but I have traveled across the seas with my family, we have dealt with many ships in storms. From the sounds of it, that is what they are looking for." She spoke looking up at the sky " It is too calm and with the fish that has been pulled up, they are small which is telling me they can sense something brewing." She said gently moving her head towards the captain's cabin , having payed attention a few times now of her moving in and out of her cabin watching out at the horizon for something unseen to them.
"Plus my gut is telling me to not eat anything for a few hours. It always does that when a storm is brewing, Such a beautiful chaos of nature to seeing storms brewing. No two are ever alike, from their clouds to the movement of their winds, to the feeling of their rain drops. So beautiful forces of nature." She spoke in sweetly. Sumire has always loved storms and felt more alive and at home near water's edge or on a body of water. It felt like home to her, which she might have found odd being a songstress and a seamstress, but she never questioned who she knew she was.
For obvious reasons, Gawain had never truly felt at home on the water, let alone the open kind of water that stretched on for an unfathomable distance. Between his family being murdered and him and his mother being taken across the ocean by raiders, having to live on a brine-ridden island that was close to barren, all the way to his mother dying on that same rock in the middle of nowhere, one might be able to understand why he never regained the love he had for it as a child. He had grown up right beside the ocean after all, for a period longer than the one in which he had effectively been taken. This just went to show the ease with which trauma burrowed and settled deep enough to where even long lasting memories of fondness would die so it could sustain itself.
“I don’t care much for boats or open water, though I guess I could understand why others might enjoy it. At the same time, I also don’t much care for being in the middle of a storm, especially since this was supposed to just be a fishing trip…”
Sulking and pouting at the idea that he had been deceived into becoming part of something he had never really intended to be a part of whatsoever, he also understood that there was really nothing he could do in order to get away from it. Storms, fog, these were the kinds of things that made it feel like the raiders of Grýnd were still right there, taunting him from the distance. Before he was really capable of responding to some of the other things the girl had brought up, it seemed that the Captain and her people were more or less done conversing as they began to mingle with the crowd again. Claiming that they were indeed about to be heading through a storm, it was shared that they would really only be grazing it, meaning there was no real need to fear for the worst. Apparently, this ship had seen a good deal of storms that were quite a bit more dangerous.
As it turned out, they were looking for someone who might be willing to sail the ship for a bit. After hearing everything the girl had to say about the matter, Gawain could think of no one better to take care of that than her. Personally, he wasn’t the least bit interested in the matter, as sailing a ship was not nor would it ever be on his list of things he wished to do before he died many, many years from now. Crossing his arms over his chest, he looked at the girl and spoke out, believing it would save everyone a bit of time if he more or less pushed her forward a bit.
“Sound like something you might be interested in? I’m just gonna stand back and watch how you do.”

Sumire looked towards the direction the captain seemed to be thinking as she smiled closing her eyes as she shaked her head before looking out at the water " I love the ocean, the stories it holds within it's depths the mysteries it has to be seen, it was amazing to know such things"She said "However I prefer land the best and being in the home I know. Traveling is not something in my cards or in my future anytime soon."She said gently.
She looked towards where the captain and a lot of the crew were speaking , hearing that her suspicions were confirmed. "Oh It does seem I was right to assume however, I believe you have me all wrong. I have never sailed a ship before. I am from a rather large family of noble merchants back in my homeland far from here. I also am but a seamstress, I have never worked a ship in my life or the need to learn so." She spoke in earnest. She loved the sea and riding on ships, but she never was allowed to take part in doing any of the heavy work. "I wouldn't know the first thing in stirring a ship or what to look for as it's captain, I would be lost and most likely cause a lot of money to disappear in repairs if the ship doesn't sink on me first." She joked.
She was confidence that she could steer a ship without hopefully wrecking, however, she wasn't confident in actually out siring and staying out of a storm. She might have hunches and a lot of assumptions but she lacked the needed experience. One can say they can lead with the greatest of them. That was sumire when it came to making garments and knowing their makings, however give the girl a ship and she would be lost for days just attempting to figure our how to even make one sail.
The more he heard, the more dull this whole undertaking was starting to become. He wanted to try and catch some goddamn fish, not sail a goddamn ship. And out of all the people here that seemed like they might have been good for something, it seemed the girl with the self-proclaimed knowledge stemming from noble birth was going to be just as useless to him as everybody else on this godforsaken ship. Honestly, he had expected more from her than cowardice, though it was to be expected from the kind of people Griswold had always mistrusted with every fiber of his being. While he wasn’t like that himself, it would’ve been a huge help to him if they had just stepped up and took care of this. Right now though, with the girl being unwilling to partake, that meant that it all fell down to him as per usual.
“Tch… fine, step aside then. Let the peasant boy show you how it’s done. Also keep in mind that I have no idea what I’m doing.”
At times like these, Gawain could understand why Griswold had made the deliberate choice to leave this butt of a country behind to go travel the world. So many people dwelled inside of it, all with big talk about how they knew this and that and had experience, only to make someone else do all of the work. Walking up the stairs to the place where this round wooden circle had been attached to the ship, he imagined that this was the kind of mechanism used to sail the ship. When he had originally been kidnapped and sold off into slavery, he had been carried on a ship that moved through means of a sail and oars. It had a kind of rudder at the back that was manned by one person so as to steer in some capacity, though from what he had seen up until this point, a ship of this size couldn’t use a rudder that was being moved around by a single person.
It’d be far too heavy and would likely need some kind of giant to move it, which was likely why this contraption wheel did what the average man could not. Just looking it over while bringing his hand to his chin, he kept pondering, believing that the wheel and the rudder were connected underneath all of that wood. Planting both hands firmly on the wooden wheel, he saw the plethora of handles attached to it, likely meant to make it easier to steer.
“So I just need to spin this wheel to make the ship go swish or swoosh right? Sounds easy enough.”
Looking at the darkening skies ahead, Gawain just looked around at the other people, waiting for one of them to start informing him on what to do. When that took too long however, the boy just swung the wheel in one direction, causing the entire ship to violently stir and shake those that stood on board. Swinging the ship towards a hard right, Gawain’s goal was to move around the storm so they could get back to what this was all about: a break from fighting and dungeon delving, and a chance to do some nice and quiet fishing for a change. Laughing loudly at the gutsy kid and his brand of sailing that was highly uncomfortable for everyone else, it seemed that Verona had started taking a liking to him. Following up on the violent swing of the wheel, it took mere seconds before the first mate made it up to him and began instructing him on what to do, and how to level the ship back out and into a straight line. Finding it rather helpful, the boy was becoming more and more confident by the second, finding that all of this probably should have been more difficult.
But he was a prodigy after all.
Even as the winds were beginning to pick up and make it more difficult for some to keep a firm hand on the steering mechanism, Gawain’s abundant physical strength made it more difficult for him to let go at this point. Even though his words had come out filled with confidence, if it weren’t for the freebooter by his side telling him what to do and what to aim for, there was a good chance he would’ve just handed it back off to the guy before heading back to his fishing rod. Even if he wasn’t going to actually fish up a single thing in this kind of weather and with these speeds, he still would’ve sat himself down for it just to be a contrarian. In that way, Gawain and Griswold were both two peas in a pod. For now though, the boy would just sail the ship in an attempt at getting around the worst the storm had to offer. He did wish to survive after all.

Sumire watched him as she tilted her head "Did you just try guilt tripping some seamstress into stirring a ship? I see your logic is not sound."She spoke more to herself resting her hands on her hips as she sighed shaking her head in some disappointment as she looked at her servant for an opinion where they just shrug as she looked back towards Gawain before looking at the storm brewing.
She managed to hold her ground as she felt the ship sharply turn as it shaked against the waves and water holding it up. She felt her servant bump into her, nearly falling over herself. " Hey can you not stir us overboard please." She called out feeling the ship even out with the water as she sighed. She was happy someone else was at the wheel then herself. it was already bad enough taking this trip without authorization of her father, let alone it being a pirate ship. She was going to be lucky to be able to hear after the lecture that was going to be awaiting her. she wasn't about to hear how she was not allowed this or allowed that and tradition this and tradition that. There was already alot she was dealing with that her father luckly wasn't stopping but she wasn't up for this lecture.
She sighed looking over the side of the ship before looking over at gawain.
“Yeah yeah, no worries. I’ve never killed anyone with a ship before.”
Responding to the noble girl, he just grinned as he kept up his somewhat violent manner of sailing, doing the best he could to keep moving against the waves that made the ship shudder, but kept it from actually taking damage. As it turned out, the hard part about steering around a storm was the fact that no one knew the exact size of the storm. All they could do was judge where the sky wasn’t as dark and keep near it while maintaining a relatively forward momentum, otherwise they’d just be sailing right back where they came. Luckily for everyone involved, with the directions and help from the first mate, Gawain’s physical strength being on the very strong side of the spectrum allowed them to keep the ship heading in the way that it was without pushing them off course due to the one holding the helm not being strong enough to hold on.
For the better part of an hour, this kind of heavy sailing kept up as it saw most of the other contestants heading into the ship for safety. As the waves crashed over the deck and water bathed those that remained with brine, the only soothing sensation was the rain that more or less acted as a shower, ridding them of some of the salt. To say that it was comfortable for him would be a lie, though it was something he had committed himself to, and he had planned on seeing things through to the end. Whether that would be his literal end or the end of the storm yet remained to be seen however. When they finally made their way into clearer weather, Gawain sighed deeply as he let go of the helm, handing it back to the first mate while taking off his shirt and pants, wringing them out and putting them back on. Having been drenched with both rain and sea water had been annoying enough as it was, not to mention being incredibly cold.
Not being the kind of person that really knew shame, he figured that since he had briefs on under his pants, it wasn’t like he was showing his butt again, so he didn’t think captain Nico would take offense. Besides, he wasn’t flashing anyone by design or intent, keeping the buns packed and out of sight. Once he was done wringing out his clothes, captain Verona gave him a smack on the shoulder, commending him for a job well done. Stating that she hadn’t imagined someone his age to be strong enough to be able to brave the waves in the way he had, it had put them back on track towards finding the waters that were rife with fish. And that was everything that mattered right now. They had a competition to win, and if they were going to win, they needed to be the ones that returned with the most and the biggest fish. Now at least, they were one step closer to reaching that goal.
